KAREN CHOI

Rooted in the Americana tradition, KAREN CHOI’s songs explore the common human experience from a rich lyrical perspective. Choi has supported acts such as Son Volt, The Quebe Sisters, Wade Bowen and the late Pegi Young. Her latest release, ‘Lost County’ was recorded and mixed by Tim Gebauer of Electropolis in St. Louis, Missouri. Gebauer has worked with artists such as River Kittens, Le’Ponds, Pokey LaFarge and Sleepy Kitty. He co-produced the album with Nick Dahlquist and Karen Choi.

‘Lost County,’ leans into the stylistic freedom of the Americana genre as it scales back the use of bluegrass forward instruments as heard on Choi’s past work. The six song collection instead focuses on rich harmonies, electric lines, and multiple varieties of organ, piano and guitar. Choi hand-selected a cast of local players to record on the album, resulting in a sound that truly represents her live performance.

Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Choi was introduced to roots music through her father’s involvement in a local bluegrass band. At thirteen, she was self-taught on guitar and began songwriting as a means of guiding everyday encounters. She is currently living in St. Louis, Missouri where she spends her time raising her three boys and keeping a busy tour and show schedule.
