ED HALL/ JIM OHLSCHMIDT

November 18, 2011 @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm

$7.50

Ed Hall is an instrumental fingerstyle guitarist and banjo player. His performances are lively and humorous as well as instrumentally astounding. Ed’s approach to fingerstyle guitar has always been to try to arrange pieces for guitar that are not typically played on one guitar, difficult pieces, arranged as accurately as possible by ear. Instrumentals like The William Tell Overture, Hoedown from Rodeo by Copland, The Hungarian Rhapsody II by Liszt, and The Theme From Peter Gunn are now part of the classic arrangements in his repertoire.  Ed’s early guitar influences were the Beatles, John Denver, Doc Watson, Chet Atkins, Stefan Grossman, and Ed’s guitar hero Gamble Rogers.  The pinnacle so far in Ed’s career came in September 1991 when he won the coveted National Fingerpicking Championships at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Ed’s banjo style covers bluegrass and folk standards for the 5 string.

“Lost Jim” Ohlschmidt is one of today’s foremost performers of Mississippi John Hurt’s music. In a newly published biography of Hurt, Stefan Grossman commented “Jim really captures the feel, sound and atmosphere of John’s music. The guitar playing is spot-on and the vocals are great – very warm and evocative.” Jim has recorded three CDs of John Hurt’s music to date, and has also produced various solo recordings of original acoustic fingerstyle instrumentals and songs. Currently living in Eden Prairie, Jim performs in the Twin Cities with his trio, Lost Jim & the Boxcar Scholars. He also is lead guitarist and singer with a Madison-based electric blues band called the Velveetatones. Jim wrote and produced several musical segments for The Rhythm of the River, a film produced by Dave Erickson documenting efforts to preserve the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway which was recently aired on Wisconsin Public Television.
