SUMMARY:ELLIS PAUL
DESCRIPTION:ELLIS PAUL   doesn’t just write songs; he’s a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes\, loves\, losses of those he observes\, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him\, everyone from Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration\, Woody Guthrie\, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. \nMore bio follows ticket link: \n\n \n \n \n \nBorn and raised in Maine\, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition\, he caught the ear of folk luminary Bill Morrissey\, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album\, Stories. His songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me\, Myself\, and Irene; Shallow Hal\, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland\, Kristian Bush\, Jack Ingram). \nThrough a steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world\, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans. Along the way\, he has picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award\, 15 Boston Music Awards\, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine\, the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album\, The Storyteller’s Suitcase\, was named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year. \nHis new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided political stances on his own imprint\, Rosella Records.

SUMMARY:TIM GRIMM
DESCRIPTION:TIM GRIMM is a bit of a Renaissance man in the performing arts world\, forging a rich and varied career that blends his love of songwriting\, travel\, and acting in theatre\, film and television. For most of his 25-year career as a storytelling balladeer in the tradition of John Prine\, Woody Guthrie\, and Bob Dylan\, Tim has written primarily about community\, history\, family\, and social issues – often framed by his strong sense of place and the many years he spent on the family farm he built in rural Indiana. His songs are filled with rural characters and landscapes\, written and sung with vivid warmth and intimacy. \n\n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:BUDDY MONDLOCK
DESCRIPTION:BUDDY MONDLOCK writes songs. He does it so well that some great songwriters have recorded his songs on their own albums- Guy Clark\, Nanci Griffith\, and Janis Ian\, to name just a few. You might’ve heard his song “The Kid” (recorded by David Wilcox\, Peter\, Paul and Mary and Cry\, Cry\, Cry) and maybe even sung it yourself around a campfire. He draws you into his world – where a single snowflake follows the trajectory of a relationship\, where you get you pocket picked by a Roman cat\, where you might swim over the edge of the world if you’re not careful and where dreams that don’t come true still count. \nMike Lindauer will accompany Buddy on fretless bass. \nMore bio follows ticket link-  \n\n \n \n \n \n“I first saw Buddy Mondlock while hosting the Ballad Tree\, a tradition at theKerrville Folk Festival. This kid in a bathing suit walked up and played “No Choice” to an audience of 30 – 40 people. By the time he got to the secondverse\, he had 200 people singing along with him. He blew me away! Payattention to Buddy; he’s a great writer!”\nGuy Clark \n“As acclaimed as he is as a songwriter\, he is a fine performer who can create his share of magic with his high clear voice and inventive acoustic guitar.” David Johnson – Boston Globe \n“One of my favorites\, Mondlock is brilliant in his word choice\, poignant in his observations and powerful in his presentation.” Kathleen Hudson – Kerrville Daily Times \nHis latest album\, Filament\, finds him exploring some new territory\, both sonically and rhythmically. Produced by Brad Jones\, known for his creative approaches to singer/ songwriters\, songs like “Problem Solved” and “Sunlight In My Pocket” are propelled along by drums and percussion. Others are painted with woodwinds and string arrangements. Buddy is at heart a storyteller and the songs cover a lot of territory too\, ranging from a young artist who finds fame too soon in the title song\, to the wonders and mysteries found in “The Dark\,” a song he co-wrote with the great Guy Clark. \nWhen Buddy’s not on the road you can find him in Nashville but he grew up in Park Forest\, Illinois\, a suburb of Chicago. He didn’t have a troubled childhood. His parents were nice to him. They paid for guitar lessons when he was ten and they never said\, “when are you going to get a real job?” He sang Crosby\, Stills and Nash songs with his sisters and answered his little brother’s questions from the top bunk. A few years away at college puzzling over Homer and Plato and then he was back. Living in the big city this time and playing open mics at Chicago’s crucible for songwriters in those days\, the famed Earl of Old town. He once opened for the amazing Steve Goodman there on New Year’s Eve. Buddy was 21. Says he could have walked out of there that night and gotten hit by a bus and he wouldn’t have felt like life cheated him at all. \nWhen Buddy made his first trip to Texas from his native Chicago\, Guy Clark heard him singing one of his songs under a tree at the Kerrville Folk Festival and liked it. So Guy went back to Nashville\, opened the door and said\, “listen to this kid\, he’s good!” A publishing deal and a U-Haul headed south soon followed. \nPeople were starting to pay attention. In 1987 he was a New Folk Award Winner at Kerrville and he released his first album called “On the Line”. Over the next few years \nDavid Wilcox recorded “The Kid” on his first record for A&M. Buddy did some writing with this other new kid in town named Garth Brooks. Janis Ian heard him singing at the Bluebird Cafe and asked him if he’d like to write with her. Their song “Amsterdam” got recorded by Joan Baez. Nanci Griffith asked Buddy to sing on a show she was taping for Irish television. She ended up liking that song so much that she recorded “Comin’ Down In the Rain” on her Grammy Award winning collection “Other Voices\, OtherRooms.” Garth became a star and “Every Now and Then” ended up on his album “The Chase.” \nBuddy was touring all over the U.S. by this time playing coffeehouses and the occasional festival (he’d become a regular on the main stage at Kerrville). And there were trips to Europe too. Buddy’s second album\, produced by Steve Addabbo in 1994\, got picked up by Son Records\, a small label in Ireland started by the band U2\, and he was well received on the island of poets. He’s toured there consistently ever since. 1996 was a good year. Peter\, Paul and Mary recorded “The Kid” and then asked the kid himself to sing with them on their “Great Performances” TV special. He won a Kerrville Music Award for Song of the Year that autumn for “The Kid” too. \nSince then he’s released a string of critically acclaimed solo recordings on his own label and on EMI. And in 2003 Buddy toured North America and Europe with Art Garfunkel and Maia Sharp in support of their album “Everything Waits To Be Noticed” which they wrote and recorded together as a trio. “Filament” will be his seventh album. \nIn recent years Buddy has been writing songs with military veterans through a program sponsored by an organization called Music Therapy of the Rockies and he includes several of those songs in his shows (and one on his new album). “This has been such a powerful experience and I’m honored to have been trusted with these stories of trauma and of triumph too\,” he says. \nBuddy and Maia Sharp have also been collaborating on a new musical called\, “The Girl In the Red Dress.” It includes several songs from their project with Art Garfunkel and a slew of new material from Buddy and Maia. Set in a world where “The Leader” has banished all color as subversive\, the story focuses on a young woman who must learn to believe in herself and comes to find that she can actually make a difference. \nIn addition to writing and touring Buddy also teaches songwriting. Along with one day workshops across the US and Europe he has also been a staff instructor at the Swannanoa Gathering\, the Kerrville Folk Festival Song School\, the Sisters Folk Festival Song Camp and retreats like Ellis Paul’s New England Songwriter Retreat and Cedarsongs in Tennessee.

SUMMARY:ANNE HILLS
DESCRIPTION:“ANNE HILLS is such an exquisite singer that it’s understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me\, Anne’s writing\, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others\, is as direct\, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters.”— Tom Paxton \nMore bio follows ticket link: \n\n \n \n \n \nAnne is one of the most beloved voices of the contemporary folk music scene\, receiving awards and recognition for her live performances\, her unique solo and collaborative recording projects\, and her overall artistry and benefit work. Her song “Follow That Road” was the title cut of the Martha’s Vineyard Songwriter Retreat and has been a certified folk classic since the late 1990s. Whether she is singing her own songs\, the words of six-year-old Opal Whiteley\, or her song settings of the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley; accompanied with her guitar\, banjo\, or simply a Tibetan bell\, she puts her whole heart and soul into the moment. You won’t want to miss a chance to hear her songs and stories in person. \nThe AllMusic Guide says\, “A stunning soprano tone has made Anne Hills one of contemporary music’s premiere vocalists … Her knack for writing heartfelt songs [has] brought her to the upper echelon of her craft.”

SUMMARY:KELLY HUNT
DESCRIPTION:KELLY HUNT \n“Standing shoulder to shoulder with contemporaries like Gillian Welch and Rhiannon Giddens…folk music harking back to the stripped-down sounds of Leadbelly\, Robert Johnson and Woody Guthrie.” — JOHN VAITES [AMERICANA UK] \nOn the walls of any local used music shop there hangs a gallery of mysteries. Picked up and handed down across the decades\, each instrument contains the imprints and stories of those who have played it before\, most of which remain untold. For New Orleans-based songwriter Kelly Hunt\, the most intriguing of these stories is the origin of her anonymous calfskin tenor banjo. “I really wasn’t looking for it\,” she says\, “but I opened up the case and found a note saying\, ‘This banjo was played by a man named Ira Tamm in his dog and pony show from 1920 to 1935.’ It was unlike any banjo I’d ever heard…so warm and mellow\, with an almost harp-like quality to it\, very soulful”—apt words for the Memphis native’s debut album\, Even The Sparrow\, which was released in May 2019 and nominated for the International Folk Music Awards “2019 Album of the Year.” \nThe daughter of an opera singer and a saxophonist\, Hunt was raised in Memphis\, TN amidst a motley mélange of musical influences ranging from Rachmaninov to Joni Mitchell to Mississippi John Hurt. She grew up singing in choirs\, poring over poetry books\, and writing her own music as a matter of course\, first on piano then 5-string banjo. After being introduced to the banjo in college while studying French and visual arts\, Hunt began to develop her own improvised style of playing\, combining old-time picking styles with the percussive origins of the instrument. After college\, Hunt embarked on a rambling path through career pursuits in farming\, French breadmaking\, and visual arts\, ultimately landing in Kansas City\, where she would go on to write and record her debut album\, Even the Sparrow. \nWhile reminiscent of modern traditionalists such as Gillian Welch\, Even The Sparrow reveals an ineffable quality that hovers beyond the constraints of genre\, à la Anais Mitchell and Patty Griffin. Over the span of a dozen songs\, Hunt’s penchant for storytelling and intriguing arrangement cast a spell which No Depression describes as “the musical equivalent of a book you can’t put down\, one you’ll want to revisit again and again to catch every nuance and turn of phrase.” \nIn “Men of Blue & Grey\,” what begins as a Reconstruction-era ballad about the repurposing of Civil War glass plate negatives in a greenhouse roof soon becomes a meditation on the hope that growth and life may one day be able to emerge from the ruins of suffering and haunting of violence. “Across The Great Divide” turns an otherwise traditional accounting of spurned love into a philosophical epic of the ethics of forgiveness and freedom\, evoking the ideas of Søren Kierkegaard and Walt Whitman. \n(ALEXSI CAMPAGNE was also scheduled to appear this day\, but the whims of the Canadian government’s visa promise will keep him away.  We hope to reschedule for next year.)

The first time because they had to\, the second because they wanted to\, but that’s a whole other long story. \n“I think that ‘Luckiest One’ is a perfect example of how things come out when you honor your own individuality. DESCRIPTION:The Ross sisters are back in Wisconsin for some larger shows at Stoughton Opera House (sold out) and the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center\, and asked if they could do a show here.  We had to think about it for a second. \nSo happy we are to have them return. \nTickets are likely to sell quickly. If you already have tickets for one of the shows mentioned above\, please give others a shot at seeing them. \nWe will open at 4:00 with a petite menu which will be shared in advance of the show via e-mail. \nSISTASTRINGS

SUMMARY:LOST SOULS
DESCRIPTION:They always push to start the show earlier\, but that can only happen if you get here early and allow enough time (at least an hour) for our very small kitchen to feed you.  We set the time at 7:45\, BUT will start the show only when all who came at a reasonable time to allow for eating have been fed. We will limit the menu in order to feed people faster. \nBio follows ticket link: \n\n \n \n \n \nThe LOST SOULS are Looper Lucas & Greg Valde (with some surprise musical guests if we’re lucky). These two have been playing together around these parts for over 25 years – under an array of monikers. You may have known them as “What’s his name & the other guy\,” “Devil in the Outhouse\,” or “Syd Hartha & the Monkeyminds.” Folks often ask if they are twins\, but they’re not. Fun fact: same sperm\, different mothers.  As for music\, expect some stirring and rousing americana\, blues\, country\, and humor. \n“Sure it’s juvenile and irreverent\, but if you drink enough it’s not that bad.” \n (anonymous satisfied customer)

SUMMARY:JOHNSMITH
DESCRIPTION:JOHNSMITH is one of those artists so often under-recognized – he possesses a genius that cannot be denied\, ignored\, or overlooked. For the past forty-plus years\, Johnsmith has been sharing his music all across America and abroad. He has become a favorite at festivals\, clubs\, and house concerts alike. In addition to being a Kerrville New Folk Winner\, Johnsmith has released nine solo CDs to rave reviews\, leads musical tours to Ireland\, leads Idaho rafting trips\, teaches songwriting\, and has served as a staff songwriter in Nashville. \n\n \n \n \n \nWith his faded jeans\, his twinkly blue eyes\, and his infectious smile\, John immediately connects with audiences. You get the sense of a man who loves his life\, his family and friends\, and who loves nothing more than sharing that love in song and stories all across this land. \n
