SUMMARY:PIPER ROAD
DESCRIPTION:Stay tuned for Covid updates. Masks are recommended during the performance. \n\n \n \n \n \nPIPER ROAD was born into the age of rock & roll with individual backgrounds diverse as classical\, cowboy\, folk\, blues and Dixieland. Influenced by some live performances of Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band release of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” in the early 1970’s\, they put away the electric amps and guitars and developed a unique acoustic/bluegrass style. They never completely abandoned their musical roots and have blended Irish fiddle tunes with American country\, big band\, novelty and space-aged Grateful Dead inspired jams. \nThe band continues to swing! With their strong bond of friendship\, commitment to quality musicianship and continuing support of a strong fan base\, Piper Road invites you to join them as their show hits the road. The current Piper Road roster has accumulated over 100 years of experience performing together.

SUMMARY:MARIANNE FLEMMING/ CRIS PLATA/ BILL CAMPLIN
DESCRIPTION:Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve seats and to indicate whether you are likely to eat here.  Masks in our intimate backroom space are generally recommended. \nThis will be a grand evening with 3 songwriters sharing the stage and rotating songs. \nOriginally from south Florida\, MARIANNE FLEMMING has been a professional musician for more than 30 years\, winning numerous songwriting and “Best of” awards for her jazzy\, bluesy sound. Marianne is known as a fine singer\, composer and guitarist. She has opened for many national acts including Donavon\, Taj Mahal and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. Marianne has toured the United States\, Europe and the Caribbean. Even having Bo Diddly sit in with her while busking in Hyde Park. \n\n\n\nFrom The Bluebird Café in Nashville\, to The Bitter End in New York and Seattle’s Folk Life stage\, Marianne has appeared on many stages across the country. Her recorded music has been played on radio stations around  the world. Flemming’s song “Come on Back to My House” was covered for a compilation project of LA woman vocalists and released on a CD called “Her Voice”. That song sits in with covers of John Prine\, Bob Dylan and Richard Thompson. In addition\, songs from 2 of her CD’S were re-packaged into a compilation CD and distributed in Germany by Square One Records. \nAfter spending 10 years in Madison Wisconsin\, Marianne added family and children to her  proudest of accomplishments. Currently\, residing in SW Washington\, Marianne balances her day job as a special education teacher\, mother\, and music obsession with mostly a smile. She continues to perform\, write and record. She has just released her 5th recording project\, ” Across the Hemisphere”\, recorded and produced at home\, under lockdown and unrest with her husband guitarist Kevin Neil. \nTogether they describe their style as “Hill Billy- Bosa Nova” and sometimes can be spotted as the “The Billy Novas”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Marianne’s audience rapport was engaging. She sang with wonderful pitch\, and controlled abandon. Flemming’s guitar playing was inventive and smooth\, and her compositions were clever and interesting -musically and lyrically.”\nRobert Goss\, Production Coordinator\, PSU Lincoln Performance Hall\, Portland OR \n“The combination of her great lyrics and stellar musicianship makes this woman a cult legend.”\nRachel Bissex\, Singer/Songwriter \nI was blown away by Marianne’s talent.  I can’t remember the last time I was so impressed with a performer – not only do I love her guitar playing\, but she has an amazing singing style\, and as if that isn’t enough\, she writes great songs too!\nDavid Duthie\, Bassist\,  River City Ramblers \n\n\n\n\nVarying between a jazz-inflected\, sinuous voice reminiscent of Rickie Lee Jones and Natalie Merchant\, the solid folk sensibility of Janis Ian\, and the straight-ahead emotionalism of Patty Griffin\, songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Marianne Flemming has been writing and performing memorable lyrics and melodies for many years. Michael Henchman\, Producer\, Singer/Songwriter\, Multi-instrumentalist \nCRIS PLATA was born in South Texas\, the son of migrant workers.  Those early days of living in different migrant camps and following the harvest from region to region\, exposed Cris to a wide range of musical experiences. \nHis early musical  experiences reflect his Mexican heritage.  This heritage includes Norteno (Northern Mexico border music)\, conjunto (elements of both European and Mexican music fused by early residents of South Texas)\, and ranchera (Mexican country) music.  Today\, Cris describes this as “Mexican roots” music. \nAnother strong influence stamped its mark on this man at an early age.  This can be best described as the Texas singer-songwriter genre.  Texas has long been the hot bed of musical talent that has been forged by its wide open vistas and its independent nature.  Out of this landscape\, Texas has “grown” notable and innovative  singer-songwriters such as:  Bob Wills (Texas  swing)\, Townes Van Zandt and Lyle Lovett (masters of melodic story songs with a uniquely Texas soul)\, and Steve Earle (his “Guitar Town” is the epitome of gritty country-rock\, a standard that Nashville writers have yet to reach). \nWith all of these influences\, how do we describe Cris Plata’s music in a nutshell?  Perhaps we will have to borrow the term Tex-Mex and redefine it.  “Tex” would now stand for Texas singer-songwriters and “Mex” would stand for Mexican root’s music.  But  don’t let this definition confine your impression of his music.  Just listen to his music and the best definition will be your own. \nBILL CAMPLIN has played here a few times. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve seats.

SUMMARY:OLD SAP (w/out Jackson Grimm)
DESCRIPTION:Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve seat and indicate whether you are likely to eat here.   \nMasks recommended in our intimate back room space. \nJackson is unfortunately unable to do this tour.  OLD SAP will perform admirably for two…. \nOLD SAP is an Americana songwriter. He will be appearing here solo.\nFolk Rock\, banjo stomp\,\na calligraphy bird\nin silhouette branches \nOld Sap owns a “cowboy-sweet timber that rambles through his songs [and a] physical charisma that make his performances so engaging.” \n“a range of musical expression that wanders between musings about nature’s cyclic harmony and the love and anguish inherent to the human condition.”   —Flathead Beacon \nOld Sap has crossed numerous highways through the country in the past decade. Finally landing in Asheville in 2018\, the new ensemble released their first album together at the end of 2019. \nA Yard with Lilacs is an Eclectic Americana album. The full band sound features honky tonk guitars\, a New Orleans-style horn section\, thrashing drums\, infectious melodies\, soul-warming harmonies\, and sparkling flourishes from fiddle and piano. Guided by lyrics that are imagistic\, funny\, and heart-wrenching\, listeners are teased back to a less-anxious time and place. \nAfter its release\, A Yard with Lilacs has been enjoying regional radio play from WNCW and 98.1 The River. \nIn a live setting\, Old Sap often performs as a stripped-down folk trio. The banjo sets the groove while the baritone guitar and fiddle swarm and swoon around it. Next comes the stomp of the foot\, like a freight train crossing an old steel bridge. Harmonies streak across the sky\, prayers sent up millennia ago now swooping into the modern day. In a direct and energetic style\, Old Sap stretches out a blanket and beckons listeners to lay down their troubles\, lose their shoes\, and dance around in the grass. It’s more sound than people expect from a few simple elements—a sound that’s surprising\, familiar\, modern and timeless all at once. \nJACKSON GRIMM marries folk pop melodies with the lonesome sound of traditional Appalachian music. In a region with a strong music culture\, it is no surprise that Grimm’s songwriting is representative of his musical birthplace: Asheville\, NC. \n

SUMMARY:An Evening with DANIEL CHAMPAGNE
DESCRIPTION:Masks recommended in the intimate space of our listening room. \nWe will be sending out an e-mail the week of the show explaining menu options\, which will be limited from our regular menu due to our kitchen being small. Please plan on coming at least an hour early if you are planning to eat before the show. \nTicket link will follow bio. \nOne reviewer recently wrote – ‘DANIEL CHAMPAGNE exudes a natural ease on stage\, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band\, Champagne is just magical’ (themusic.com.au) \nThe story goes that the young Australian singer\, songwriter and one-of-a-kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a five-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12\, training classically throughout his teens and performing solo wherever he could\, honing his craft and developing what would become the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school\, turned professional and hit the road. \nThe following decade saw him release 5 studio albums\, tour relentlessly around the globe with upwards of 300 shows per year\, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel\, INXS\, John Butler\, Lucinda Williams\, Ani DiFranco\, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela. \nIn early 2020 as the COVID pandemic ground all touring to a halt\, Daniel returned to Australia writing music and further honing his craft and will return to international audiences with a swag of new songs and a complete new live show. For fans of guitar\, songs or just artistic expression at its finest this show is a must see! \n“Daniel Champagne is a crossroads. Fusing the strong traditions of Blues\, Folk and other roots art with pop showmanship and admirable lyrical ability. I firmly believe that he will become an ambassador for roots music in a time where it desperately needs representation.” – The Indie Blender\, Canada \n“One of the more amazing young percussive guitarists touring the world right now” – Blank\, Gold Coast\, Australia \n“Today I saw the future of Folk – Festival goers flocking in their thousands towards the main stage to witness the young musical phenomenon from Australia dish out an absolute show-stopper at the evening’s end.”\n– Firefly Column\, USA \n“Watching Daniel Champagne perform is a once in a lifetime experience. He is a true prodigy that plays like no one else could possibly play unless they spent at least two lifetimes studying the art.” – BW Review\, New Zealand \n“The word Prodigy seems to entirely fall short of this soft-spoken young man’s skills\, he coaxes sounds and melodies out of his instrument that literally drop jaws.” – The Calgary Herald\, Canada \n

DESCRIPTION:Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve seats and to indicate whether you are likely to eat here. \nMasks recommended in the tight space of our listening room. \nNew England-raised\, Minneapolis-based MOTHER BANJO makes her long-awaited return to Cafe Carpe after having a baby and releasing two new full-length albums. Her latest album Eyes on the Sky artfully mixes her signature blend of folk\, bluegrass and soulful Americana. Joining her on this tour will be her good friend and veteran St. Paul songwriter Martin Devaney. \nDubbed St. Paul’s Night Mayor\, Martin Devaney has made a name for himself over the last 20 years as a prolific folk/Americana songwriter who has shared the stage with such artists as Billy Bragg\, Charlie Parr and The Jayhawks. He is currently touring in support of Dispatch\, the debut album from his new project FOLIOS\, which mixes literary storytelling with lo-fi garage folk. SUMMARY:MARK DVORAK/ CHRIS THIEME/ JIM CRAIG
DESCRIPTION:Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve seats and to indicate whether you will be eating here that night. \nMasks recommended in the intimate space of our listening room. \nJIM CRAIG\, Chicago folk troubadour MARK DVORAK and C.T. THIEME-  together for a special in-the-round remembrance of folk legend Art Thieme titled “A Handful of Songs.” Great to have them all back for a fantastic evening of music and camaraderie. \nArt Thieme who passed away in 2015\, would have been eighty-one on July 9. “Of the hundreds and hundreds of songs in my dad’s repertorie\,” said C.T. Thieme\, son of Art\, ‘A Handful of Songs’ was about his favorite.”The elder Thieme learned “A Handful of Songs” from friend\, songwriter and Janesville native Jerry Rasmussen. \nFor nearly four decades Chicagoan Art Thieme took his intimate style of singing\, storytelling and humor across the country\, earning a reputation as a master of the American folk balled. He made regular visits to Wisconsin venues in Milwaukee\, Madison and Ft. Atkinson. “Dad could take an entire auditorium of people and make them feel like they were in his living room\,” said C.T. Thieme. “He was a great person\, a great man.” \nC.T. Thieme\, who continues to perform a handful of songs from his father’s repertoire\, will be joined on stage by longtime Cafe Carpe favorites Jim Craig of Deerfield\, Illinois and Mark Dvorak from Chicago. The three will perform in-the-round highlighting stories and songs in remembrance of Art Thieme and his legacy of folkways music making. \nJIM came of age during the folk boom\, “listening to Pete Seeger and Dave Van Ronk\, but also more obscure musicians like Dock Boggs and Pink Anderson\, folks who were off the map but were rediscovered in the early ’60s.” He was a regular at the Green Dragon Inn\,  where we came to know and love him for his understated warm grace. Jim has guitar chops and a beautiful baritone voice\, and an interesting repertoire of songs. \n\n\n\nHe taught guitar at the Old Town School of Folk Music\, jammed with figures in the Chicago folk scene such as Eddie Holstein and Steve Goodman. He is the owner of Hogeye Music in Evanston. He is a gentleman. \n\nMARK DVORAK is a modern day troubadour who has never stopped performing\, writing and recording. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” with “an encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs.” His original songs are described as “wondrous” and “profound.” Though Mark often appears in theaters and on festival stages\, he is also at home in a more intimate setting. His concerts are a mix of the familiar and the new\, traditional folk and standards from the American songbook. He plays authentic country blues guitar and picks great old-time banjo. \nMark enjoys involving his audiences in sing-along songs\, just like The Weavers used to do\, and mixes in his own well-crafted and infectious originals. Mark has a refreshing\, down-to-earth stage presence\, and is a very engaging performer. He sings with a clear\, signature voice\, and he likes to joke around with the folks who attend his shows. Throughout the program he’ll interject personal anecdotes and add a touch of history or social context to the performance. \n“Masterful” Chicago Tribune \n“The real deal. His show is funny\, passionate\, intimate & unforgettable” Old Town School of Folk Music \n“One of a vanishing breed. Although all of us benefit from the tradition\, Dvorak is one of the few who keep it alive.” Utah Phillips \n

Co-led by real-deal Chicago blues vocalist and songwriter OSCAR WILSON and  songwriter\, harmonica giant and singer JOE NOSEK\, the band plays masterfully raw and unvarnished houserocking blues. Wilson’s huge\, gritty vocals and Nosek’s powerhouse harmonica fuel their razor-sharp original songs. SUMMARY:AN EVENING WITH LILLI LEWIS
DESCRIPTION:Ticket link is below. \nMasks are recommended in the small space of our listening room. \nAthens\, Georgia native turned New Orleans Folk Rock Diva LILLI LEWIS is a powerhouse composer and performing artist with “storytelling with transformative empathy and classically trained poise.” Jewly Hight\, NPR.org. Lewis is a voice for the voiceless in Americana\, her third full album for Louisiana Red Hot Records\, lauded by NPR\, Rolling Stone\, Offbeat Magazine and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “One of the most powerful records of 2021\, Lilli Lewis‘ Americana offers up 13 tracks of raw\, unfiltered talent… jaw-dropping vocal stylings\, sharp lyricism\, irresistible hooks and a needed perspective that’s often overlooked…” Lorie Leibig\, TheBoot.com \nMore bio info follows the ticket link. \n\n \n \n \n \nAs the story goes\, LILLI LEWIS should never have been. Before she was born\, Lewis’ mother was told her baby probably wouldn’t survive due to lung trouble\, so the fact that Lewis now makes a living singing with those same lungs is a gift she never takes for granted. Lewis uses her voice to bring what she calls sacred songs into profane spaces\, and though she’s abandoned trying to define her sound\, she hopes her audiences leave shows knowing two things: that they are brilliant as they are\, and that they have the ability to use that brilliance to make a better world. \nTrained as an opera singer and classical pianist\, Georgia native Lewis has been a composer\, producer and performer for over two decades. After carving out space as an African American queer woman of size\, Lewis’ career has culminated in her album Americana being a top pick everywhere from NPR’s All Songs Considered to Rolling Stone. \nThe FolkRockDiva is a musical polyglot who glides easily between folk\, roots\, country soul\, gospel\, and jazz\, and has integrated New Orleans traditions by singing lead for Dirty Dozen Brass Band founding member Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove. Lewis’ Louisiana Red Hot Records releases include The Henderson Sessions\, We Belong\, and Americana. \nPowerhouse singer-songwriter Lilli Lewis has announced her 2022 tour\, including dates at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival\, Folk Alliance International Conference\, and The Kennedy Center which has called her: “A powerhouse performer adding her unique voice and talent to the national discussion of the state of social justice in America.” and\, apparently\, the Cafe Carpe. \n“Lilli Lewis brings an engaging\, needed voice and perspective to the genre’s storytelling roots. Her stunning 2021 album Americana offers timeless autobiographical songwriting that digs into the realities of daily life for marginalized groups in America as it looks at our society as a whole.”\nNashville Scene: “12 Artists to Watch in 2022” \n“Lilli Lewis is one of the best for pure emotional impact and sincerity in her artistry. If you haven’t heard her then do yourself a favor and become enthralled.”\nDemian Roberts\, journalist \n“the most mesmerizing and soul touching combination of jazz\, blues\, gospel\, and field folk imaginable. The audience went fn nuts.”\nMiddleton O’Malley\, Ogden Museum of Art
