SUMMARY:ALBERT LEE BAND
DESCRIPTION:Show is likely to sell out. Buy tickets in advance using this link:\n\nKnown for his signature Ernie Ball guitar and lightning speed picking\, ALBERT LEE has not only worked with some of the biggest names in music but he has also maintained a solo career of his own.  Bill could not believe our good fortune (and yours) when he got the request for Albert to play our little room. Albert will be accompanied by his band\, J.T. Thomas on keyboards\, Will McGregor on bass\, and Jason Harrison Smith (or another) on drums. \n“ONE OF THE FINEST GUITAR PLAYERS WHO EVER WALKED THIS EARTH…”Vince Gill \nAlbert was born on December 21\, 1943 in Herefordshire\, England\, before moving and growing up in Blackheath\, London. He was first introduced to music with the piano\, taking lessons aged seven\, learning the classics and pop tunes before the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis inspired him to take up guitar. \nAlbert was treated one Christmas to a Hofner President acoustic arch-top\, and from there he never looked back. Spurred on by the recordings of Jimmy Bryant\, Buddy Holly and The Crickets\, Gene Vincent and The Everly Brothers\, Albert left school at sixteen and turned pro\, getting regular gigs at the 2 i’s Coffee Bar and The Flamingo Club in London – first with Bob Xavier’s band\, and then with The Jury. He replaced Jimmy Page in The Crusaders before joining Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds in ‘64. \n\n\n\n\n\nHe soon found his favoured guitar of choice\, the Fender Telecaster\, whilst everyone else was playing Gibson Les Pauls and Stratocasters. Albert admitted to feeling like the odd man out as his appreciation for American country artists grew\, and he formed the band Country Fever. He began working with Poet & The One Man Band\, who later turned into Heads\, Hands & Feet when Jerry Donahue and Pat Donaldson (of Country Fever) were replaced by Albert and Chas Hodges. Their self-titled debut album featured the original “Country Boy”\, now synonymous with Albert’s trademark picking style. \nThe U.S eventually beckoned\, and Albert began doing session work and briefly toured with The Crickets in 1973. He moved to Los Angeles\, where he met his idols Phil and Don Everly\, and Don invited Albert to play with him and pedal steel legend Buddy Emmons. After working on Don’s second album\, Albert left to join Joe Cocker’s band and was replaced by Lindsey Buckingham. \nAlbert’s reputation was growing as he moved to Encino\, and met his wife Karen whilst rehearsing up in Santa Barbara with Joe Cocker and his band before they went on the road. He contributed to Cocker’s “Sting Ray”\, and was then approached by A&M about putting together a solo album. \nAt a pivotal point in his career\, Albert was asked by Emmylou Harris to replace James Burton – one of his guitar heroes – who was leaving for Elvis Presley’s band. In 1976 he joined the Hot Band\, and his incredible guitar work came to the fore on the “Luxury Liner” LP. Albert released his first solo album “Hiding”\, produced by Brian Ahern\, which featured perhaps the definite version of “Country Boy” with Emmylou on backing vocals and Ricky Skaggs on fiddle. \nWhen he returned to London in 1978 for session recording\, Albert met Eric Clapton. He was invited to join his band and played on Clapton’s live album “Just One Night”\, which featured Albert on lead vocals for a cover of Mark Knopfler’s “Setting Me Up”. Albert would work with Eric for five years before he left and released his second solo album\, the self-titled “Albert Lee” in 1982. \nAlbert fulfilled his boyhood dream to play with the Everly Brothers in 1983 when he acted as guitarist and musical director for their reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Since then he would regularly tour with the Everlys on and off for 20 years. After two instrumental albums – “Speechless” (1986) and “Gagged But Not Bound” (1987) – steel player Gerry Hogan invited Albert to headline at a festival in Newbury\, England – fronting his own band for the very first time\, Hogan’s Heroes. \nAs Albert toured with Hogan’s Heroes through the late 80s\, he began his long association with Ernie Ball Music Man\, who would eventually (through many iterations) produce his signature guitar that he tours and records with today. In 2002 he would join Eric Clapton\, Tom Petty\, Paul McCartney and other music legends on stage at the Concert for George at the Royal Albert Hall. \nAlbert also received a Grammy Award in 2002 for his contribution to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” featured on “Earl Scruggs and Friends”. He appeared for the first time at Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2007\, now an annual appearance\, and has toured periodically for the last few years with ex-Stones bassist Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings\, performing with Georgie Fame. Joining his hero James Burton\, along with the likes of Vince Gill and John Jorgenson\, Albert won a Grammy for his performance on Brad Paisley’s instrumental “Cluster Pluck” in 2009. \nShow is likely to sell out. SUMMARY:A ROSE AMONG THORNS
DESCRIPTION:This quartet of local musicians offers pleasing melodies\, tight musicianship\, and stirring renditions of songs from folk\, pop\, blues\, country\, and Celtic traditions. First performing on Café Carpe’s stage two years ago\, the foursome includes Jeff Mason on acoustic guitar\, bass\, and vocals; Perry Baird on vocals and acoustic guitar; Tom Cook on bass\, mandolin\, banjo\, and a host of other stringed instruments; and Angela Licari on violin. Jeff and Perry played at Café Carpe as solo acts and as a duo in the mid-1980s\, renewing their musical partnership about five years ago. Tom\, retired band teacher at Fort High School\, came on board in 2015\, and a violin was added in 2016\, with Angela capably taking over that duty last year. \nThe guys are retired from their day jobs and reliving their younger days (as they remember them)\, while Angela provides the more youthful exuberance. All are familiar to local audiences as members of other musical ensembles\, some of which include Jeff with the Merry Horde\, Expanded Waist Band\, and Blue Stew; Perry with The Buzzards; Tom with Madison Brass and Guitarcheology; and Angela with Madpolecats. The Rose Among Thorns collaboration gives each a chance to contribute favorite—often eclectic—songs for interpretation by the group. Songs featuring moving stories and themes\, energetic instrumentals\, soothing vocals\, and singable choruses are all part of typical Rose Among Thorns musical sets.

SUMMARY:BILL MILLER
DESCRIPTION:A pleasant surprise addition- Bill is in Wisconsin for a wedding and asked if we could accommodate him. We said YES. \nBILL MILLER is an award-winning Native American recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, painter\, and world-class accomplished flute player. Over the entirety\, Miller has produced over a dozen albums\, received three Grammy Awards\, numerous NAMA awards (including a “Lifetime Achievement Award) and led Wisconsin’s La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. He is now touring in support of a recent collaboration album Look Again To The Wind: Johnny Cash’s Bitter Tears Revisited where Bill has the title track. \nA Mohican Indian from northern Wisconsin\, Bill Miller has long been one of the most admired figures in the Native American music arena and beyond. As an award-winning recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, and painter\, he’s been a voice for the voiceless\, a link between two great and clashing civilizations. On Spirit Rain\, he walks the path of reconciliation in a set of fourteen heartfelt songs and evocative instrumentals. \nCo-produced by Bill and Michael von Muchow\, and written or co-written entirely by Bill\, Spirit Rain took the singer back to his roots. It was recorded at Actual Sound Studios in La Crosse\, WI\, not far from the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation he called home. “It was very different from being in a media center like L.A. or Nashville\,” says Bill. “Everyone turned off their cell phones. My buddies and I would go fishing on the Mississippi River. The recording was low-tech too: 16-tracks\, no digital. I could have pushed it technically\, but I felt closer to the spirit doing it this way.” \nWith his new album\, Chronicles of Hope\, Bill hopes to further inspire fans\, both present and future. “My faith in my Creator leaves me content with the gifts I have\,” he says\, “and I use them to enrich the world through His blessings. I choose to bless people rather than curse them\, to be a peacemaker rather than a warmaker.” As songs like “The Promise” make clear\, Bill feels just as passionate about saving the environment of North America\, the land of his forebears. ” I think we should feel as if we’re living in the Garden of Eden\, and we should take care of the land\,” he says emphatically. “I’ll always use my music to urge people to preserve the land.” \nBill has an equally active career as a painter. His work has been shown and sold in prestigious galleries around the country\, and he maintains a studio at his Nashville home\, where he lives with his wife and children. With so busy a personal and professional life\, it would seem that Bill Miller could cruise ever onward in easy contentment. But artists don’t work that way. “I’ve been given a lot of second chances in my life\,” he says. “I’ve been through alcoholism and other problems. I was lifted out of the ditch\, and I still see a blue sky above. After years of living against the grain\, I see things as rivers\, creeks and rainstorms\, as the liquid layers of my life.” \nBill is really excited about a brand new ROY ORBISON project.  Roy’s sons want him to do a record honoring their father\, interpreting some of Roy’s songs and doing some of his own songs inspired by Roy. \nBill’s heart is now beating well- at 95% and on its way up after heart failure.  That kept him off the road for awhile and he is glad to be back at work. \n

SUMMARY:CHRIS KASPER
DESCRIPTION:“Nothing cuts to the core like a simple song\,” says CHRIS KASPER. More than a dozen years into his acclaimed career\, the singer/songwriter gets back to the bluesy basics with his fifth album\, O\, the Fool. \nInspired by Delta blues\, folk music\, and the string arrangements of Hollywood film scores\, O\, the Fool was recorded on both ends of an 800-mile move that took Kasper from Philadelphia to Nashville. He’d already spent much of his adulthood on the road\, traveling from city to city\, building his fanbase one show at a time. Meanwhile\, back at home\, his friends were putting down roots and starting families of their own. Kasper couldn’t help but question his own choices\, and it’s that swirl of contrasting feelings — uncertainty\, determination\, and wanderlust — that fuels O\, the Fool. \n“It’s about traveling\,” he says of the 13-song\, self-produced album\, “and then second-guessing your travels once you’ve arrived at your destination. It’s about coming to terms with the thing that makes you think\, ‘Ok\, maybe this isn’t the right place for me\, but I am here\, so I should make it work. This is where life has brought me.'” \nThe album’s title was born during a coffeeshop meeting with a friend\, who spilled a pack of tarot cards across the table. The first card was the Fool: a traveller with a bag slung over his shoulder\, headed toward some unknown destination. The illustration reminder Kasper of himself. Weeks later\, another friend found the same card and brought it to Kasper\, saying the two troubadours resembled one another. Kasper agreed. “The card embodies that feeling of wandering\,” he explains. “It reminded me of the journey that music takes you on\, and you can’t predict where it’s gonna take you.” \nFrom a songwriting perspective\, O\, the Fool is a simple\, straightforward album. The chord progressions are basic\, influenced by the no-frills approach of blues musicians and early 20th century folksingers. The arrangements\, on the other hand\, are downright lush\, with Kasper taking inspiration from the epic\, sweeping scores of old western movies. He engineered the string parts himself\, working with multi-instrumentalist Kylie Ryan — who contributions to the album include viola\, cello\, and violin — to create orchestral swells. Lush and beautiful\, the songs on O\, the Fool show Kasper’s capabilities not only as a songwriter and evocative vocalist\, but as a producer\, too. \n“This is a realization album\,” says the songwriter\, whose past travels have included opening gigs with the Wood Brothers\, Amos Lee\, and G Love. “It’s almost like a soundtrack — a blues album meets a western movie. When your songs are simple and direct\, you can go nuts with the presentation. You can strip away the fat from your writing\, but still turn the entire arrangement into something bigger. That way\, the punches hit harder.” \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \n
