SUMMARY:KAIA FOWLER
DESCRIPTION:KAIA FOWLER \nWith soaring vocals and accomplished guitar work\, Kaia shares songs that explore life’s struggles and joys\, drawing on folk\, blues\, roots\, and rock traditions. Inspired by nature and the human condition\, Kaia’s songs resonate with strength and vulnerability as she explores a vast emotional landscape. With over 20 years as a performing singer-songwriter\, Kaia draws from a large repertoire of original material and select cover songs by artists such as John Prine\, Carole King\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Stevie Nicks. \nFor this special concert\, Kaia will be joined by lead guitarist and percussionist Caleb Wood who enriches her music with his intuitive playing. Formed this summer\, the duo has delighted audiences across Wisconsin with their haunting ballads\, rhythmic folk tunes\, and old-time blues songs. You will be glad you came to see this mother-son pair in concert. \nKaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical poetry\, rich melodies and engaging chord progressions. She placed as a finalist for the 2012 Great River Folk Festival songwriters contest. Two songs from her 2010 album Seams of My Heart received radio play on Woman of Substance Radio. The Americana Gazette album review had this to say about Kaia’s songwriting: “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” It continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010 issue). Kaia’s latest album\, released October 2015\, is an EP titled All The Way\, dedicated to the memory of her husband Scott R. Jaeger who died of pancreatic cancer in 2013. A portion of the proceeds from sales of All The Way benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. She is currently working on her third studio album. \nSee videos of Kaia’s recent performance at a house concert and listen to samples from her albums at her website.

SUMMARY:ANTJE DUVEKOT
DESCRIPTION:Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \nANTJE DUVEKOT  has solidified her reputation as one of Boston’s top singer songwriters with “Big Dream Boulevard”\, her debut studio release and “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia”\,  her follow-up albums. The debut CD was produced by Seamus Egan\, founder of the Irish super group\, SOLAS and the project was released on Ellis Paul’s label. It was voted “#1 Folk Release of 2006” by the Boston Globe and was named to the “Top 10 Releases of the Year” by National Public Radio’s\, Folk Alley. Her follow up albums “the Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer” and “New Siberia” were produced by Richard Shindell and alongside with Richard feature other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \n“Toward the Thunder” is Antje Duvekot’s fourth studio release. Produced by Scott Petito and recorded at NRS studios in Woodstock\, the new album centers around themes of courage\, resilience and striving for something better. It features an impressive cast of folk royalty from Shawn Mullins to Anais Mitchell\, Liz Longley\, John Gorka\, Martyn Joseph to Kris Delmhorst and Richard Shindell. In addition to nine new Duvekot originals and the traditional tune “the Parting Glass” the album includes a Dar Williams cover “The Light and the Sea” from which the record title\, as well as the album art\, is derived. The song is about resilience and the fact that there is always a light that one can turn to\, even in times of storm and upheaval. Like most of Duvekot’s writing\, a sense of hope and perseverance shines through the songs on “Toward the Thunder”.  \n“What a blessing to have worked with someone as talented as Antje. With a voice like hers\, and songs as good as these\, a producer (especially a first-time producer!) just tries to get out of the way\, to do no harm\, and to let the artist speak for herself.” – Richard Shindell \n“Duvekot has gotten hotter\, faster than any local songwriter in recent memory. Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. She believes in the redemptive power of the shared secret; and is utterly unafraid to mine the darkest corners of her life for songs that turn fear into resilience and isolation into community”. The Boston Globe \nAntje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined the The Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland and the Tonder Festival in Denmark. \nIn December of 2007\, The Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign seen by millions\, including a Super Bowl audience. Antje’s fast-growing fan base\, the viral spreading of her music and a track record of sold-out shows are a testament to her growing popularity. Neil Dorfsman\, the producer of Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nIn 2010\, Antje played the TEDMED conference in san diego. According to CNN: “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot got up with her guitar and sang about her grandmother descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Twitter revealed that I wasn’t the only one who was holding back tears – Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:BILL STAINES
DESCRIPTION:********I inadvertently put the wrong time in for this show (corrected now).  We like to start the weekday shows earlier at 8:00\, and will try to do so this time\, depending on when people arrive. \nThe New Pioneers would usually have this 2nd Thursday\, but they will perform on August 17th. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \nAnyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. \nSinging mostly his own songs\, he has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today\, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65\,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances and one reviewer wrote\, “He has a sense of timing to match the best standup comic.” \nBill’s music is a slice of Americana\, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon\, the on-the-road truckers\, or the everyday workers that make up this land. \nMany of Bill’s songs have appeared in grade school music books\, church hymnals\, and scouting campfire songbooks; he is one of only a few songwriters to have eight songs published in the classic song collection\, Rise up Singing. Composer David Amram recently described Bill as “a modern day Stephen Foster…his songs will be around 100 years from now.” \nOver the decades\, you have heard Bill singing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion\, HBO’s award winning series Deadwood\, and Public Radio’s Mountain Stage. Additionally\, his music has been used in a number of films including Off and Running\, with Cyndi Lauper\, and The Return of the Secaucus Seven\, John Sayles’ debut as a writer- director. \nIn 1975\, Bill won National Yodeling Championship in Kerrville Texas. Another important recognition was given to him in 2007. Presented by the Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, The Jerry Christen Award recognized Bill’s contribution to New England folk music. \nCurrently\, Bill has recorded 26 albums; The Happy Wanderer and One More River were winners of the prestigious Parents’ Choice Award\, taking a gold medal and silver medal respectively. His songs have been recorded by many artists including Peter\, Paul\, and Mary\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, The Highwaymen\, Mason Williams\, Grandpa Jones\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, Nanci Griffith\, Glen Yarborough and others. \n“Folk music is rich in the human spirit and experience. I’ve always wanted to bring something of value to people through my songs.” With these thoughts\, Bill continues to drive the highways and back roads of the country year after year\, bringing his music to listeners\, young and old. \n“Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody left off-carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.” – Nanci Griffith\n“Staines is one of the best songwriters in folk music today\, penning lyrics that evoke a sense of place and a generous spirit to go along with his pretty melodies. – Associated Press\n“Staines is one of folk music’s best songwriters and entertainers.” – Milwaukee Journal\n“There is no better writer of instantly memorable singalong choruses in this genre of music!” – The Boston Globe\n“His gentle lilting voice\, spacious melodies and common-chord lyrics give his songs a homespun grace that often belies his mastery of the folk form. He is such a pure pleasure too\, people forget to notice how damn good at the job of singer-songwritering he really is.” – New England Folk Almanac\n“Folk singer Bill Staines’ compositions recall the paintings of Grandma Moses – simple\, literal and evocative of a bucolic tranquility that modern times have almost erased.” – Hartford Courant \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:DAYNA KURTZ w/ Robert Mache
DESCRIPTION:DAYNA KURTZ  Over the past decade\, the New Jersey born\, now New Orleans (and seasonal Vermont) resident vocalist/writer/musician/producer has been bestowed with many awards and praises\, including being named the Female Songwriter of the Year by the National Academy of Songwriters. Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt have raved about her in interviews\, and she’s performed on such high-profile radio shows as World Cafe\, Mountain Stage and NPR’s Morning Edition and Tell Me More. She’s toured and opened for the likes of Elvis Costello\, Richard Thompson\, Mavis Staples\, Rufus Wainwright\, B.B. King\, Dr. John\, Richie Havens\, Keren Ann\, Chris Whitley\, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. \nDayna’s new disc (Here\, Vol. 1 due March 2017)\, is a live record with career spanning tracks\, culled from her 2016 Dutch theater tour with guitarist Robert Mache. It manages to capture the heart-stopping edge-of-your-seat mesmerized silence that Dayna Kurtz seems to magic from her audiences. “I began my career as background music in crowded beach bars\,” explains Kurtz\, “and I used to make a game of seeing what it would take to shut people up. I got good at it. Although there’s some tricks to it\, it was really more a kind of witchcraft than anything – I learned to draw whatever power and attention there was in the room being sent my way and sent it back out again. Other people got caught in the loop and started paying attention too. And as long as the crowd wasn’t shitfaced or distracted by a TV I could usually get them. It was good training\, even now that my audiences are more inclined to listening already anyway. I write music that requires some attention.” \nOn her work and friendship with ROBERT MACHE (Continental Drifters\, Steve Wynn) Kurtz says\, “I’ve loved Robert’s playing for such a long time\, and we’ve been friends longer than we’ve been touring partners – he was one of the first musicians to befriend me in New Orleans. That we had such undeniable chemistry has been one of the greater recent gifts of my life\, and I just wanted to document it somehow\, and quite a few people in my life including my label have suggested a live record. I’d been hesitant\, only because there’s only a few live records I listen to with the devotion I’d give a beloved studio record. It’s notoriously really difficult to capture the feeling of being there in the dark experiencing it. Then the challenge of it intrigued me.”\n \n“When Kurtz sings\, one of two things typically happens. Either she lets out a deep\, husky croon that seems to bubble up from her toes\, or she unleashes a full-throttle roar that’s more inviting than imposing…There’s no logical reason why Dayna Kurtz is not a full blown star.” – James Reed\, Boston Globe \n“Kurtz has total mastery of the dynamics of ballad singing. She brings the kind of substance to her vocals characteristic of a great gospel singer.” – John Swenson Offbeat \n“Dayna Kurtz is the kind of artist who inspires wild-eyed zealotry among her fans\, and there are three reasons for it: One\, she’s an artist’s artist\, one whose whiskeyed\, determined alto often earns her comparisons with Nina Simone; two\, while Europeans adore her\, she’s obscenely underappreciated in her own country; and three\, her songs\, which straddle a difficult space between jazz\, rock\, and folk\, are pure poetry. Her latest release owes its artist instant stardom. If that’s unattainable\, it should at least earn her the one descriptor all serious artists strive for: important.” – Tammy La Gorce ALL MUSIC GUIDE \n“Dayna Kurtz’s diverse vocals feel both old and new\, recalling Nina Simone of yesteryear…hypnotically haunting” – New York Post \n“Kurtz’s voice is a potent thing. She projected that voice like a stage actress; the occasional glint of grit made it all the richer.” – Keith Spera\, Times-Picayune (Jazzfest 2012 review) \nRise and Fall/Dayna Kurtz nominated for 5 Best of the Beat/Offbeat awards in 2016 – including Songwriter of the Year. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:KATIE SCULLIN SOLO
DESCRIPTION:Fort born and raised KATIE has been making quite a splash in the Madison area music scene. \n“She can sing you to the depths of your longing or shake you alive with her beats. Since 2008 Katie Scullin has been that little engine—chugging up the hill and gaining momentum with her lyrics\, lights and loveliness. From quiet listening rooms to high-energy festivals she easily conjures sublime melodies and moody sensations with a tap of the toe and a strum of her guitar. We want to be there with her. In the light. In the darkness. She makes it look so easy\, and we immediately feel like a confidante. Scullin continues to challenge herself and her sound by diving into new projects and producing impressive works as an independent artist. \nIn 2009 Scullin’s rock group Rivalry played Wisconsin’s largest music festival Summerfest in the Emerging Artist Series. A couple years later she took the stage as front woman with techno-soul group Star Persons who reached great heights in the Madison area being nominated and winning multiple Madison Area Music Awards. The accolades kept coming. Scullin nabbed a nomination for “Best Alternative Artist” at the Madison Area Music Awards in 2011. In 2013 she released her first solo project EP “She Smiled” and a year later was crowned Best Singer/Songwriter by 105.5 Triple M’s Project M Competition as well as Best Local Musician in the Jefferson County Daily Poll. \nHer style shifts and changes and it’s all inspired. In 2016 The Walrus (An Experimental Project)\, produced with help from producer Hunter Connors Herm\, showcased Scullin’s amazing range and acute collaborative instincts. In the dream-like rock lullaby sequence\, our vocal dynamo is backed by Darren Marabelli on guitar\, D.J. Scullin on guitar\, Travis Drumm on drums\, and Nate Wiswall on bass. \nWhether peddling a razor-sharp ballad or an energetic pop track Scullin commands attention. And now—finally—she’s bringing it all home in a full-length album called Pieces. This collection of tunes which highlights Scullin’s trademark soothing cadence and innocent curiosity brings all the feels. From catchy “You and I” to the rolling jam “Dream Awake” it’s easy to see why she’s the musical darling of backwoods pubs\, celebratory stages and your own hallowed living room. She’s a master at her craft and has got energy and emotion to spare.” \nPLEASE CALL 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:ANNIE & ROD CAPPS
DESCRIPTION:Songs about broken things and poignant little ponderings are delivered with a rootsy vibe\, a touch of twang and a soulful groove. ANNIE & ROD are on a musical journey that began in 1982\, culminating into a symbiotic sound that reflects their deep and intuitive understanding of each other. Annie’s disarming\, earthy voice and solid command of her guitar are punctuated by Rod’s effortless\, accompaniment and beautiful solo work. Together they weave unforgettable melodies that are at once intricate and sparse – musically completing each others’ sentences. \n“The audience is drawn in right from the beginning with Annie’s amazing voice and the power of her songs. She has a way of making everyone in the venue feel like she is his or her personal friend.” – Dave Rutkofske\, Blue Water Folk Society (Thumbfest) \nOver the years\, Annie and Rod have done it all; from rock to musical theater and while they continue to draw from a wide range of genres and influences\, what comes out is a hybrid sound all their own. Genuine and playful; effortless and endearing; this duo has been enchanting audiences in quality music venues\, house concerts\, coffeehouses and festivals throughout their home state of Michigan and beyond. \n“When I look around the room at an Annie and Rod Capps performance\, I see a lot of smiling faces with eyes riveted to the stage…there is a magic that energizes an audience. I can’t wait to bring them back to our concert series!” – Tim Piazza\, Concerts at the Cabin\, Evansville\, Indiana \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.
