SUMMARY:JOHN STATZ
DESCRIPTION:(NOTA BENE: The Irish Session will not be held tonight- moved to Tuesday March 7.) \nWisconsin-born songwriter JOHN STATZ is working on a new recording project\, the follow-up to his acclaimed TULSA\, produced by JEFFREY FOUCAULT.  John describes what this endeavor may include: \n“I have been writing love songs lately\, specifically about the kinds of romantic love that burn. Namely\, all of them. When we first enter a new relationship we are filled with burning desire. Sometimes we later take those same relationships for granted and seemingly burn right through them. At the end we might find ourselves literally burning old love notes\, or simply bridges\, which turns out to be an excellent time to listen to that fire in our bellies. Hit the road\, see something new\, spend time on ourselves before striking a new match.” \nWhat people say: \n“John Statz writes songs you can’t shake. They follow you around all day and run through your head at 3 a.m. Open-hearted\, horizon-line songs.”– Jeffrey Foucault” \nStatz uses the spaces in between the lyrics to cast his haunting spell of longing and lost ways.” – Guitar World’s Acoustic Nation \n“John writes the kind of songs that float through your mind\, seeking purpose and stay nestled in your thoughts long after listening.” – American Songwriter \n“…lush melodies and a sense of time\, space and place dominate his work\, creating a sound that stops the listener in his or her tracks and once there\, holds them spellbound… More than merely a set of songs\, it holds together conceptually\, making it the kind of album that figures to be a landmark of sorts in Statz’s still smoldering career. It’s simply that good.” – PopMatters \n“This is a modern musical travelogue; a diary of different moments and places\, captured in words and lyrics…HIGHLY RECOMMENDED” – PopDose \n“John Statz follows a guitar echo over the open plains of Oklahoma to reach into ‘Tulsa’\, the title track from his upcoming release. Once the tale catches up with the slow echo of rolling rhythm rumble\, it starts to head west out of the Sooner state.” – The Alternate Root (named “Tulsa” a “Top 10 Song of the Week”) \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:GAELYNN LEA/ ROD PICOTT
DESCRIPTION:Two special performers share the evening- please call to reserve at 920-563-9391. \nGAELYNN LEA is a musician from Duluth\, MN. She has been playing violin for over twenty years. First classically trained\, she began learning traditional Celtic and American fiddle tunes at the age of 18. During her college years Gaelynn started sitting in with various folk/rock musicians and developed an improvisational style all her own. Eventually she also began singing and dabbling in songwriting. Gaelynn has played alongside many notable Minnesota musicians over the years\, including Alan Sparhawk\, Charlie Parr\, and Billy McLaughlin. \nGaelynn Lea has been actively performing throughout Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin since 2006\, contributing to a number of musical projects in the Twin Ports. Currently her most active collaboration is The Murder of Crows\, an atmospheric alternative duo with Alan Sparhawk. Together they recorded an EP titled “Imperfecta” in 2012. Their original song “When We Were Young” was featured on the Sundance Channel’s acclaimed drama “Rectify” in June 2014. Gaelynn also regularly performs solo sets of experimental fiddle tunes sprinkled with her original songs; her aim is to create a meditative\, layered sound that allows the listener’s mind to drift. \n“Karen Dalton and Joanna Newsom melt together in the form of Gaelynn Lea and set about absolutely obliterating your heart.”  -Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) \n“The way her voice resonates is so unusual and beautiful\, like nothing I’ve ever heard before.”   -Jess Wolfe (Lucius) \nThe son of a welder from rural New England\, ROD PICOTT is a masterful songwriter and soulful singer who carries with him as fine a suitcase of songs as you’ll find anywhere. Slaid Cleaves\, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Fred Eaglesmith have recorded Rod Picott songs. A former construction worker who hung up his tools when he released his debut CD in 2000\, Picott has carved a career for himself with a run of 6 beautifully crafted self released CDs over the last 13 years and a well earned reputation as a engaging\, emotion fueled performer.\nHang Your Hopes On Crooked Nail\, produced by RS Field [Billy Joe Shaver\, Justin Townes Earle\, Hayes Carll] is a collection of carefully crafted songs of rugged truth and beauty. Recorded at Joe Pisapia’s [KD Lang\, Guster] Middletree Studios in East Nashville the CD highlights Picott’s particular gift for exploring complex themes in common language. The eleven songs on Hang Your Hopes On a Crooked Nail offer an unblinking albeit wry gaze into our common heart and a clenched fist of defiance against the trials that tear at our humanity. \n“Accept Rod Picott for what he is; Americana of the highest order”    Julian Piper/ Acoustic Magazine \n“Gems that finely balance despair\, desire and optimism with dexterity    Arthur Wood/Maverick Magazine \n“Hangdog lyrics and deadpan delivery have the ability to strike a chord with anyone who has a heart.”    Alison Stokes/Country Music People \nPlease call to reserve at 920-563-9391.

SUMMARY:MARK STUART
DESCRIPTION:MARK STUART is a full-time touring musical artist\, bringing his years of experience to the stage. His focus is on the songs he has penned and recorded\, delivered with a soulful singing voice and highly memorable guitar playing. \nAfter many years on the Americana/Folk circuit\, Stuart has cultivated a very rounded performance. His show consists of storytelling\, flashy guitar “chops”\, and songs that seem to draw from his rock\, blues\, country\, and folk music roots. Mostly\, this artist from Tennessee has toured solo or in a notable duo with his wife (“Stacey Earle & Mark Stuart”). There were stints along the way as a sideman\, though (Steve Forbert\, Freddy Fender\, Steve Earle\, Joan Baez). If placed on the bill with a contemporary artist he is usually asked to play guitar on their portion of the show. Just ask Jason Ringenberg\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, or Jimmy LaFave. \nOne can find Mark Stuart on any given night in a small theater\, coffeehouse\, house concert\, festival stage\, club\, church auditorium\, etc. giving it his all. Aside from that\, he could be instructing at a guitar clinic\, songwriting workshop\, or playing on someone’s recording session. As\nco-owner of Gearle Records he has produced or co-produced many albums. Stuart’s career has repeatedly taken him to all of the USA\, Canada\, Europe\, and the United Kingdom\, and\, has spanned several decades. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:PETER MULVEY
DESCRIPTION:  Doors will open at 5:30. \nTo PETER MULVEY\, there is no such thing as a straight and narrow path. At least\, not one that he has any interest in taking. \nA live-wire on any stage\, Peter Mulvey is an acoustic singer/songwriter/guitarist who\, in fact\, defies this categorization. His ferocious guitar playing whisks him through more tunings than he has fingers in the course of an evening\, as he winds his way from full-throated rockers to deceptively plain-spoken musings. Whether solo or with longtime musical collaborator David “Goody” Goodrich at his side (coaxing unearthly sounds out of electric guitars and mandolins)\, Mulvey is someone who just naturally commands a stage: \n“Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you’re ever likely to hear… utterly original… it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated… his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener’s brain… one of the finest\, most complete entertainers… stunning.” – THE IRISH EXAMINER \n“The cream of the crop sings with a clarity reserved for the likes of legends.” \n“Peter Mulvey is all substance\, which is his style.” \nPeter will have a new record almost in hand\, “Are You Listening?”\, produced by Ani DiFranco and available March 24 on Righteous Babe Records. \nPeter says\, “The work I do in this life has never felt so flimsy to me\, but it has also never felt so necessary. I’ve been trying to hold still in the middle of that tension\, and recently came across this helpful observation from Phil Ochs: “In such ugly times\, the true protest is beauty.” Ani and I and Todd Sickafoose and Terence Higgins and Anna Tivel did our level best to make something beautiful. I hope it reaches you. \nThanks.” \nSee ticket link above.

SUMMARY:RACHAEL KILGOUR/ BRIANNA LANE
DESCRIPTION:Two great Minnesota songwriters who happen to be friends in one show.  BRIANNA LANE has been here many times\, often with PETER MULVEY.  RACHAEL will be making her Carpe debut. \nBRIANNA LANE  is the latest in a deluge of compelling songwriters flooding the region. Lane’s vocals are both confidant and fragile\, running parallels to Mindy Smith or Americana veteran Patty Griffin. Behind Lane’s beguiling smile lies a heart that has had its share of heartache where songs like “In My Bones” and “Company” draw their inspiration. Her stories oscillate between a sense of urgency and resolve while seeking a tranquil balance. \nBrianna is a gifted singer/songwriter in true Americana form. She writes and performs on an acoustic guitar as well as a banjo\, crafting songs that are clear-eyed and pure—with an integrity derived from her gritty\, unflinching emotional honesty. Jim Walsh recently wrote\, “She’s poised\, ambitious\, a great writer\, a soul singer of the first order\, and an accomplished guitarist.” (Star Tribune) \nLane grew up in Minnesota and still calls Minneapolis home. In her eight years of touring Lane has shared the stage with Gillian Welch & David Rawlings\, Colin Hay\, Billy Bragg\, Dar Williams\, Patty Larkin\, The Weepies\, Jennifer Nettles (of Sugarland)\, and numerous other well seasoned musicians. She has also shared powerhouse\, leg-powered bicycle tours with Signature Sounds’ artist Peter Mulvey. Lane has released four full length solo records and one duo EP with Cahalen Morrison as “Harbor Collective”. Her latest full-length CD is entitled “The Navigators Club”. \nRACHAEL KILGOUR is a Minnesota-based songwriter and performing artist whose sincere\, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the esteemed international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition\, Kilgour has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. She was also a finalist in the 2015 Telluride Troubadour Contest. A versatile performer\, Kilgour has shared stages with the likes of indie artists Haley Bonar & Jeremy Messersmith as well as folk legends Greg Brown\, Cheryl Wheeler & Catie Curtis. \nMarried in her early twenties\, Kilgour devoted her young adulthood to parenting her stepchild and building family and community. Her work from that time (Self-Titled 2008\, Will You Marry Me? 2011\, Whistleblower’s Manifesto 2013) chronicled her life as a young parent in a same-sex partnership and addressed socio-political issues from government corruption to income inequality and religious hypocrisy. Kilgour’s music career took a backseat during those years as she lived a slow\, home-focused life. \nIn 2014\, divorce brought an unwanted end to her role as a member of the family she had helped to grow. In the months following\, Kilgour found solace in songwriting. Rabbit in the Road\, was born out of that time: the love\, loss\, betrayal\, disorientation and the profound sense of resilience that followed. \nRabbit in the Road\, is due out March 3rd\, 2017 on NewSong Recordings. It was produced by CATIE CURTIS with help from sound engineer\, Crit Harmon and mixed by Gar Ragland at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville\, NC. The album takes an intimate and often painful look at the failed marriage and loss of family. Kilgour’s writing and delivery cut deep\, with resolute simplicity. Sorrow\, rage\, resilience and compassion exist side by side within a series of honest and memorable melodies. The collection of work stands tall on a foundation of vulnerability and opens the door to moments of profound connection. \n“So when Kilgour sings “No one’s predictable as you\,” there’s a steadfast confidence to her voice\, which lingers around the guitar and keystrokes like smoke above a dying fire. There’s hints of Stevie Nicks and Neko Case in her pensive\, almost rustic vocals\, which do great justice to the song’s solemn mood.”  Chris Payne- BILLBOARD \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:BEN DE LA COUR
DESCRIPTION:2016 Kerrville New Folk winner BEN DE LA COUR has lived a different kind of life. \nAfter growing up in Brooklyn\, he set out to see the world as an amateur boxer\, bartender\, janitor and agricultural worker in Havana\, London\, Los Angeles and New Orleans before settling in Nashville. Influenced as much by giants such as Townes Van Zandt and Warren Zevon as by Nick Cave and The Gun Club\, Ben de la Cour has managed to meld all of these influences into a uniquely modern\, haunting and sometimes darkly humorous sound that is all his own. \n“Ben de la Cour’s songs are brimming with urgent authenticity. There is thematic hardness and vulnerability throughout\, but what distinguishes de la Cour’s songs from lesser guitar-and-anguished-vocals hacks is the raw humanity of his delivery and the potency of his way with words.” (No Depression) \nIn 2016 Ben de la Cour released ‘Midnight in Havana’\, eleven tightly crafted songs of what he likes to refer to as “Americanoir”. Tales of substance abuse\, murder and mental illness sit in perfect juxtaposition with occasional moments of playful lightheartedness and the ever-present glimmer of hope. However\, upon closer inspection\, darkness almost always wins…an unlikely hero\, but one that suits de la Cour. \n“Ben de la Cour bleeds the songs he sings. Within the understated instrumentation and de la Cour’s baritone voice lie stark\, haunting songscapes: moody recollections that recount the journey of a life that is not always pretty\, but proves better than one of mundane predictability.” (Turnstyled\, Junkpiled) \n“Ben de la Cour is a folk musician with the songwriting acumen of a young Nick Cave and the lyrical wisdom of a vitriolic Leonard Cohen. His songs are stark\, melancholic and packed with emotion and will send you collectively weak at the knees.” (Fresh Deer Meat) \n  \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:ERNIE HENDRICKSON
DESCRIPTION:Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \n“In today’s overly produced pop music market\, Ernie Hendrickson is a diamond in the rough; born of heart\, soul and grit.”\n– A. Owens www.4twk – international music \n“This inspiring artist defies categories by blending folk and country with rock and jazz”\n-Kim Wheeler\, Rockford Register Star  \n“Surely a cutting-edge singer/songwriter of tomorrow\, Ernie Hendrickson lives enough in the past to keep what Bob Dylan\, James Taylor and Kris Kristofferson have done alive and thriving for generations.”\n-Jim Hagerty\, Rock River Times  \n“His music easily justifies the mention of his name in the same context as\, dare-it-be-said\, genre power house Ryan Adams.”\nFady Khalil – Jambands.com \n“Dark and pretty songs. Ernie Hendrickson is finding a niche in the indie folk Americana segment. He is a storyteller like Harry Nilsson in a country mood.”\n– Hans Werksman\, Here Comes The Flood \n“Whether exploring tribal beats or graceful homegrown country hymnals\, E. Hendrickson stretches the song-writing pallet. He is drawing influences from Gram Parsons’ Burrito Brothers\, straight through the heart of the America’s Blues tradition.”\n– Martin Halo\, JamBase \nFor ERNIE HENDRICKSON\, the hill country is as much a state of mind as a physical locale\, as the deep but beautifully casual songs on his new One for the Dreamers eloquently remind us. In the hill country of Ernie’s imagination\, the high ground provides an elevated vantage point that enables his listeners to perceive how time can leave important matters unfinished\, or tie up loose ends with sometimes heartbreaking finality. Yet the hill country is\, of course\, a real place\, and where Ernie comes from. The Wisconsin native grew up in what’s called that state’s Driftless Area\, where Midwestern flatness gives way to a more rounded landscape\, so it’s natural that that he chose to record One for the Dreamers nestled among the neatly arranged hills of Middle Tennessee. \nRecorded at Lamplight Studios in rural Primm Springs\, Tenn.\, 2013’s One for the Dreamers was anchored by producer-drummer Chad Cromwell (Neil Young\, Mark Knopfler)\, songwriter-producer-bassist Kevin “Swine” Grantt (Brad Paisley\, Jamey Johnson\, Willie Nelson)\, and Pete Wasner (Vince Gill) on piano\, organ\, and wurlitzer. Special guests include legendary harmonica player Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson\, Guy Clark)\, pianist Reese Wynans (Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Buddy Guy)\, and rising Americana singer-songwriter Lera Lynn on harmony vocals. \nThere’s a concordance of topography and emotion at work in the new record that comes out of Ernie’s life as a traveling musician and an intuitive record maker—Midwestern openness meets Nashville experience\, you could say. Like the great American singers and songwriters who have inspired him—performers such as Neil Young\, Jerry Garcia and Willie Nelson—Ernie seeks the light amidst the ever-present perils of darkness. \nBorn and raised in the Midwest\, Ernie Hendrickson grew up on a steady diet of Willie Nelson\, Bob Dylan\, Neil Young\, Cat Stevens\, and Jerry Garcia. These early heroes opened the gates to the deep well of American roots music which he continues to draw inspiration from. In 2007 he self-produced and released a highly acclaimed solo record\, Down the Road\, of which the Illinois Entertainer deemed “Groundbreaking” and pushed him straight onto the Midwest’s radar as an emerging singer-songwriter. Hendrickson set the talent bar high in the studio for this album with a cast of players that included the subtle and angelic backing vocals of his sister\, Kelly Hendrickson\, and the legendary harmonica player\, Howard Levy (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones\, Paul Simon)\, aligned with an all-star group of Chicago musicians. \nHendrickson’s second record\, Walking with Angels\, began with a chance meeting between Ernie and veteran producer Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown\, Lucinda Williams) in the spring of ’08 in Iowa City\, where Ernie was opening a show for an old friend of Bo’s\, Kevin Gordon. Even in early conversation\, the two agreed that there was a chemistry evolving that would only deepen once the sessions began. At Bo’s urging\, Ernie sang and played nearly all of the songs on the record with a live band which consisted of Bo\, Jon Penner on bass (Junior Brown\, Bo Ramsey)\, and Steve Hayes on drums (Greg Brown\, Bo Ramsey). This call was made by Bo to try and capture the energy of a great performance and the result could not have been better. All twelve songs on the record feel as though these four guys had been playing together for years. After adding legendary Chicago pedal steel player Brian Wilkie (Alison Krauss\, Pam Tillis) on several tracks\, Bob Black’s banjo (Bill Monroe)\, and taking a trip to Nashville to record keyboardist Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton)\, the record shines as a true testament to Hendrickson’s ripening powers as a songwriter. Radio promotion has taken the sophomore album’s success to a higher level on both AAA and Americana stations\, having spent over 25 weeks in the Top 20 on Roots Music Report’s Folk charts and in regular rotation at nearly 100 different stations across the country including Nashville’s award-winning WSM-AM The Legend. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.
