SUMMARY:ALI SPERRY & FAMILY VACATION/ The Danberrys
DESCRIPTION:ALI SPERRY is a Nashville singer-songwriter whose songs tell stories of the universal quest for connection. Ali gathered her nearest and dearest Nashville musician friends to flesh out the songs on her debut album Storybook in 2012\, with lush arrangements\, integrating elements of folk ballads\, feel-good rock and roll\, and atmospheric string-infused pop. The group came to be known as The Family Vacation\, with whom Ali tours frequently\, having shared shows with Langhorne Slim\, Amanda Shires\, Andrew Combs\, The Spring Standards\, Chris Stills\, Elephant Revival\, Mipso and others. Ali is currently touring in support of her EP “Comes and Goes”\, a soul-infused exploration of purpose\, demons and dreams.\n \nOne member of Family Vacation is drummer/percussionist JAMIE DICK\, who is well-loved around here.  Jamie has played with Abigail Washburn\, Rhiannon Giddens\, Rayna Gellert\, Tommy and the Whale\, Satchel Paige Welch\, Kai Welch\, Bill Camplin\, Jeremy Pinc\, and numerous others.  Says Rhiannon- “Mr Dick\, who possibly has the most ironic name in the history of mankind\, is a gentleman of the highest order and one with a delicate hand on the skins. Content with whatever groove fits the song he has no need for fancy fills and furbelows (tho’ he has them when he needs them); he rather shows his brilliance with subtle shifts of tempo and tone. It was an incredibly hard task finding someone to play drums for songs recorded with the great Jay Bellerose – but with certainty\, it has been done\, and with aplomb.” \nAdding to the fun will be the DANBERRYS\, who will join the Family Vacation set\, and do their own accompanied by Jamie Dick.  “Drawing deep from the traditions of bluegrass\, old-time country\, blues\, and funk/soul\, the Danberrys offer inspired songwriting delivered with raw emotion\, distinct vocal harmonies\, and dynamic\, top-notch musicianship. Rather than responding to a dictated sound\, their music further displays the near limitless nature of the Americana genre.” \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:RED TAIL RING
DESCRIPTION:OLD-TIMEY ROOTS\, NEW-TIMEY SOUNDS \nRED TAIL RING is the musical brainchild of two old-time-minded Michiganders – Michael Beauchamp and Laurel Premo. The collaboration blends the loving attention of revivalist fervor with the playful creativity of starting from scratch. Whether rendering a traditional tune or one of their many original compositions\, the duo infuses each song with musical imagination\, haunting harmonies and instrumental artistry on fiddle\, banjo\, mandolin\, jawharp\, and plain-old foot stomping. “We love pushing the boundaries of what a traditional song can be\,” says Beauchamp. “It informs how we write our original songs. There’s a real energy exchange between the old and the new.” \nThis two-way connection takes center stage with Red Tail Ring’s first pair of recordings released in April 2011 on Earthwork Music\, Middlewest Chant and Mountain Shout. The set forms a complete picture of Red Tail Ring’s blending of old with new. Middlewest Chant is comprised of all original songs\, while Mountain Shout features Red Tail Ring’s interpretations of Appalachian ballads and melodies. “We tried to weave the music on these two albums together not only with similar musical treatment\, but with running lyric lines and shared songforms\,” Premo says. \nIn May 2013\, Red Tail Ring released their third full-length album. The Heart’s Swift Foot presents 10 original songs with two acoustic standards that stretch the confines of what two people can create sonically. The duo’s signature style\, of layered\, intricate instrumental lines over close vocal harmonies\, shines on this new collection. “We crafted the recording to be as close to our live performance as possible\,” Beauchamp says. “We feel we’re at our best when we’re playing together\, listening and reacting as we go along.” As a whole\, the lyrics of The Heart’s Swift Foot explore changes that come without warning\, and the malleability of relationships and friendships. \nIn 2014\, Premo and Beauchamp collaborated in a wider circle and produced two joint releases. The New Roots Exchange is a vinyl project created with the marvelous bluegrass band Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys. The Right Hands Round is a recording of energetic square dance music with the stringband Bowhunter. \n“The very best of the 21st century’s minimalist and highly original folk music . . . a peerless duo.” – American Roots UK \n“Red Tail Ring brings to the stage a lively and commanding fusion of string and vocal harmonies. The pair deliver both established ballads and original compositions with a clear\, authentic ease that manages to transcend traditional form while honoring its legacy.” – Rob Cole\, Grand Rapids Press \n“Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp share a reverance for vivid\, authentic American art forms. They are both rustic and elegant\, and they lift us into their sound.” – Seth Bernard\, Earthwork Music \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:CLAUDIA SCHMIDT
DESCRIPTION:More than 4 decades as a touring professional have found Michigan native CLAUDIA SCHMIDT traversing North America as well as Europe in venues ranging from intimate clubs to 4\,000 seat theatres\, and festival stages in front of 25\,000 rapt listeners. She has recorded nineteen albums of mostly original songs\, exploring folk\, blues\, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. \n“If it were the intention of the creator or creators of this universe to perfectly blend together the night sky with moon and stars\, it might have been their intention as well to deliver Claudia Schmidt as their messenger of reminder.  To say that Schmidt is simply a performer with a talent to entertain would be a miscarriage of understatement. Schmidt takes her audiences into her world as easily as the child who discovers the endless universes that exist in a cardboard box….. \nSchmidt weaves her way through her concert in much the same manner as a jester. Interwoven anecdotes\, revealing her past and present\, bring people to expect a relationship between themselves and memories driven deep with the passage of time. The concert is an endless display of self-realization through humor and longing\, leaving audience members yearning to become an integral part of her world.”  Door County Advocate \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:CATHY BARTON AND DAVE PARA
DESCRIPTION:CATHY BARTON AND DAVE PARA \nA versatile duo\, Dave and Cathy perform and conduct workshops with hammered and fretted dulcimers\, banjo\, guitars and Autoharp\, as well as “found” instruments like bones\, spoons\, mouthbow and leaf. Their music ranges from driving string band music to contemplative ballads and airs. They have a knack for finding unusual\, rarely heard songs from traditional and contemporary sources in their home region\, but also from elsewhere in the US and Europe. They have conducted many topical workshops on songs from the Carter family\, the Civil War\, river lore\, gospel\, children’s songs\, Christmas music and Ozark ballads. \n“Cathy Barton and Dave Para\, as much as any folk musicians I know\, carry on the sense of importance of folk music\, the value of digging for old musical gold\, of traveling far and wide to collect old songs and tunes\, and of being friends with\, rather than exploiters of the old-timers who have provided such wonderful music foundations for us all.”  Ed Trickett \n“This duo from Missouri make some of the best music you will ever hear.” -Art Thieme

SUMMARY:THE BRIARPICKERS LARGE BAND
DESCRIPTION:The BriarPickers are a violin/mandolin duet consisting of mandolinist Brian Ray and fiddler Paul Kienitz\, melding traditional Appalachian folk melodies with classical chamber music sensibilities. \nThis conversational paradigm is the thread woven through the coupling of old-time ‘rustic’ properties with the intrinsic chamber music approach; being that of constructed or made in a plain and simple fashion and a small number of performers\, with one performer to a part. Resulting is their self-dubbed “rustic chamber music”…a collage of sounds evoking imagery and emotions that take the players and audience on a journey together to different times and places. \nThe duet is enchanced to a quintet with the addition of special guest Starr Moss (guitar) who has recently wrapped up a three year tenure with Chicago’s Henhouse Prowlers\, fiddler extraordinaire\, Shauncey Ali\, and the superlative Jon Peik on bass and banjo. \nA show not to be missed or likely seen again anytime soon. \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:BEN DE LA COUR
DESCRIPTION:BEN DE LA COUR has lived a different kind of life. After growing up in Brooklyn\, he set out to see the world as an amateur boxer\, janitor\, bartender and agricultural worker living in Havana\, Paris\, Los Angeles\, London and New Orleans before settling in Nashville. \nHis travels have taken him to some strange and sometimes dark and desperate places\, places he documents so eloquently in his second release\, Midnight in Havana. The record contains eleven songs of perfectly crafted Americanoir. Songs filled with tales of substance abuse\, murder and mental illness sit in perfect juxtaposition with playful lightheartedness and an ever-present glimmer of hope. However\, upon closer inspection\, darkness almost always wins…an unlikely hero\, but one that suits de la Cour. \nInfluenced by songwriting giants such as Townes Van Zandt and Warren Zevon as much as by bands like Slayer\, The Gun Club and Thin Lizzy\, Ben de la Cour has somehow managed to fuse all of these influences naturally into his Americanoir canon\, delivering a uniquely modern\, haunting and darkly humorous sound that is all his own. \n“Gruff but well-read\, quiet but dancing circles on one heel in the kitchen\, de la Cour is the enigma\, the lone picker\, the troubadour\, the drifter\, the one man band.” (The American Music Project) \n“Ben de la Cour’s songs are brimming with urgent authenticity. There is thematic hardness and vulnerability throughout\, but what distinguishes de la Cour’s songs from lesser guitar-and-anguished-vocals hacks is the raw humanity of his delivery and the potency of his way with words.” (No Depression) \n“Ben de la Cour bleeds the songs he sings. Within the understated instrumentation and de la Cour’s baritone voice lie stark\, haunting songscapes: moody recollections that recount the journey of a life that is not always pretty\, but proves better than one of mundane predictability.” (Turnstyled\, Junkpiled) \n“Ben de la Cour is a folk musician with the songwriting acumen of a young Nick Cave and the lyrical wisdom of a vitriolic Leonard Cohen. His songs are stark\, melancholic and packed with emotion and will send you collectively weak at the knees.” (Fresh Deer Meat) \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:JACK KENNEDY
DESCRIPTION:In his own words: \nI am a song writer\, singer and guitarist who’s been around the block more than a time or two or three. I grew up in the folk tradition (Paxton\, Dylan\, Ochs\, Seeger\, Prine\, Goodman) and played and sang for my own enjoyment as often as I could. Over the past 20 years I emerged from the cellar and began performing with the Lake County (Il) Folk Club and in Woodstock\, Il and have most recently been very active as a performer and a Board member of Artichoke Community Music in Portland\, OR. Here in the mid-west\, I’ve had the fortune over the years to know and become friends with Art Thieme\, Jethro Burns\, Don Stiernberg. I’ve opened concerts for Michael P. Smith and Christine Lavin. \nIf pressed to describe my songwriting\, I’d conjure up something like “lyrics that ramble through fanciful ideas\, forgotten lanes\, footpaths and highways of daily life\, memories\, dreams and wishes. I follow my muse where it goes and I sing about the quirkiness of relationships\, daily work\, and the twists and turns of life. I have written about cell phones\, cowboys\, thunderstorms\, and songwriting; lying\, forgetting\, obsessing\, waiting\, wandering and forgiving. My songs are to the point (no 10-minute true confessions) and have melodic roots in folk\, swing\, jazz\, blues and even classical music.” In other words\, my music doesn’t fit into a single bin\, even in a used record store. But I like it\, and I think you will\, too.
