DESCRIPTION:TRET FURE‘s career spans 4 decades. She began her professional work at the age of 16\, singing in coffeehouses and campuses in the Midwest\, moving to Berkeley where\, after performing weekly on the campus of UC Berkeley where she attended college\, she discovered that music really was her life. At 19\, she moved to LA to pursue a songwriting and musical career. Within a year she was performing as guitarist and vocalist for Spencer Davis\, touring with him and penning the single for his album “Mousetrap”. She went on to record her own album in 1973 on MCA/UNI Records\, with the late Lowell George of Little Feat as her producer. With the success of that release\, she opened for such bands as Yes\, Poco\, and the J Geils Band. \nWhile recording her second album\, Tret became interested in sound engineering\, learning the trade and becoming one of the first women engineers in LA. Over the course of her career she has engineered and produced countless recordings by a variety of artists\, including her own work \nIn the early 80s\, Tret left the mainstream music industry. Armed with a fierce desire to retain full artistic control\, she began exploring the independent side of the industry and soon discovered the blossoming genre known as Women’s Music. She has been a major player in that field ever since\, recording with and producing some of the best of women’s music including the legendary “Meg and Cris at Carnegie Hall”. She worked as a duo with Cris Williamson throughout the 90s releasing 3 CDs together during those years. \nNow after 6 acoustic releases on her own label\, Tomboy girl Records\, she has re-established herself in the folk world winning the 2004 South Florida Folk Festival Singer/Songwriter Competition in 2 out of 3 categories. 2004 also brought her recognition with the prestigious Jane Schliessman Award for Outstanding Contributions to Women’s Music. And in 2009\, she received the Janine C Rae Award for her work in Women’s Music. 2009 also found her voted “Pride In The Arts Favorite Female/Lesbian Musician”. And Tret’s last CD\, ‘The Horizon’\, finished in the top 20 CDs for 2011 in the Outvoice Charts\,. Her new release “A Piece of the Sky” continues her tradition of outstanding songwriting! \nFure also markets her own line of clothing named after her popular song\, “Tomboy girl”. In addition\, while not on the road\, Tret teaches guitar and songwriting individually and in workshop settings. An accomplished cook\, Fure has also published a cookbook\, Tret’s Kitchen\, featuring her own recipes. Along with bridging the marketing\, production\, and music worlds\, Tret serves as President of Local 1000\, The Traveling Musicians Association–a union geared toward helping traveling musicians find security and longevity. \nTret has just released her new CD Rembrandt Afternoons. \nAs always\, please call to reserve seats.

DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine. \nLike them on Facebook.

Rooted in nature\, Kaia’s songs resonate with strength and vulnerability\, seeking to bring light even when approaching some of the darkest moments in life. \nPerforming at folk clubs\, house concerts and venues that include the Cafe’ Carpe in Fort Atkinson\, Wisconsin and Froth House in Madison\, Kaia shares originals and select covers that include songs by John Prine\, Patty Griffin\, Tracy Chapman and Susan Tedeschi. Kaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical metaphors\, rich melodies and creative harmonies. \nKaia released her first album\, Seams of My Heart in 2010. With Kaia on guitar and vocals\, the album also features Randy Sabien on violin and mandolin\, Paul Bast on dobro\, Sam Steffke on piano\, and Jeremy Reutebuch on percussion. \nFrom the Americana Gazette album review: “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” He continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010 issue) \nFollowing the release of Seams of My Heart\, Kaia was invited to play her song “Who Are You?” as a guest at Michelle Shocked’s concert at the High Noon Saloon in Madison\, Wisconsin. Singles from the debut album received airplay on Women of Substance online radio. \nA new EP album\, All The Way\, was released October 3\, 2015 to benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network\, in memory of Kaia’s husband Scott R. Jaeger who died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 44 in July\, 2013. There he found space to develop his own voice within a vibrant and supportive music scene that included Shawn Colvin. After a couple of years there and a short stay in Colorado\, Cliff moved to New York in 1978. Because the clubs were great (the Bitter End\, the Speakeasy\, Kenny’s Castaway\, Folk City) and the company amazing (John Gorka\, Suzanne Vega\, Lucy Kaplansky\, Julie Gold\, Steve Forbert\, Christine Lavin\, and Shawn Colvin)\, New York was an ideal musician’s boot camp. Though he put in long hours as a taxi driver\, Cliff worked steadily on his music throughout the 80’s\, doing solo gigs and studio work\, and playing guitar on the road with Richie Havens\, Melanie and others. Singing advertising jingles for products like Coke\, Miller Beer and Chevrolet (“The Heartbeat of America” campaign) allowed him to devote more time to his songwriting. \nIn 1990 Cliff’s song “My Father’s Shoes\,” appeared on Windham Hill’s Legacy collection\, leading to a deal with the label. They released Cliff’s first album\, The Long Road (1990)\, a work featuring a duet with Richie Havens. The critical response to this debut was outstanding (The Philadelphia Inquirer called the album a “repeatedly astounding collection”). He followed with two more records on Windham Hill before releasing 12 Songs of Good and Evil (1997) on Red House Records\, which stemmed from a chance meeting with Red House founder Bob Feldman at John Gorka’s wedding. Cliff recorded two more albums before his critically acclaimed The High Above and the Down Below\, named the #5 album of 2007 by USA Today. Produced by legendary musician and Red House Records president Eric Peltoniemi\, it was recorded in Minneapolis with noted jazz players Gordy Johnson\, J. T. Bates and Rich Dworsky and was his first album after spending several years recovering from a car accident. \nWith a new lease on life and a fresh batch of songs\, Cliff embarked on what has turned out to be an artistic renaissance. Recorded in the Texas Hill Country\, Cliff’s 2009 album 500 Miles: The Blue Rock Sessions may be his finest to date. An intimate album of powerful originals and unique covers\, it features a reworking of his hit “The Long Road\,” a song made more poignant after nearly two decades of touring and recording. Long one of the most respected songwriters on the club scene\, his peers often mine his catalog for themselves. Cliff’s song “Memphis” was included on Cry Cry Cry\, an album of collaborative covers by the “folk supergroup” of the same name (comprised of Dar Williams\, Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell). Other performers who have recorded his songs include Richie Havens\, Shawn Colvin\, Russ Taff and Buffy Sainte Marie. A collection of his songs has been published in The Cliff Eberhardt Songbook (Cherry Lane Publishing). \nIn 2011\, Cliff got a phone call from the Folger Theatre and Shakespeare Library in Washington DC. They had been listening to his song\, “That Kind of Love” along with director Aaron Posner and got the brilliant idea to hire Cliff to write original songs for the Shakespeare classic “The Taming of the Shrew”. It would be set in the old West – Deadwood style – and Cliff would be cast as the blind but wise old saloon singer bookending scenes with his poignant songs and guitar phrases. The play was a huge success and won much critical acclaim across town and 7 weeks of solid sold-out shows in the Spring of 2012.  In 2013\, Cliff was awarded a coveted Helen Hayes Award for Sound Design and the cast won for Best Ensemble. Some of the songs on Shrew Songs are from Cliff’s past work and some are brand new. The stripped down production enhances the immediate intimacy of Cliff’s songwriting. You don’t have to have seen the play to love this record! Then again\, BBST is a rare group\, and an impressive collective of musical might. Energetic\, contagious\, and flat out fun\, BBST weaves a sizzling thread through multiple genres to deliver a tapestry of award-winning original music that defies one description\, yet\, connects with everyone. Perhaps that has a something to do with the fact that BBST is made up of veteran musicians who have toured\, recorded\, or shared the stage with Leo Kottke\, The String Cheese Incident\, Lyle Lovett\, The Smashing Pumpkins\, Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, U2\, Asleep at the Wheel\, Garbage\, Willy Porter\, Riders in the Sky\, The Radiators\, David Grisman\, Alex DeGrassi\, Doc Watson\, Carrie Newcomer\, and Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band to name a few. Or\, it could simply be that Big Bang String Thing knows how to craft a great sound. \nTHE BAND: \nBob Westfall (mandolin\, guitar\, vocals\, songwriting) has studied and worked with some of the top acoustic players in the country -Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, and Alex DeGrassi. But\, while these influences are certainly evident\, Westfall’s songwriting are uniquely his own. An award-winning mandolinist\, Bob grew up in Texas and Minnesota\, and his style incorporates the best elements of storytelling with a hybrid jazz/pop/worldbeat/bluegrass feel. \nThe husband and wife team of Mary Gaines(bass) and Chris Wagoner (violin) provide the bottom and top of the BBST sound\, and have appeared in performance and on recordings with Westfall for over fifteen years. Gaines and Wagoner have similarly diverse backgrounds — formal classical training at the Univ. of WI\, jazz studies with the great bassist\, Richard Davis\, followed by years of performing and recording with jazz\, blues\, rock\, and folk artists and songwriters. \nPlease call to reserve.
