DESCRIPTION:BIG BANG STRING THING It’s rare when the word acoustic conjures thoughts of music that can electrify the jump in your feet. Then again\, BBST is a rare group\, and an impressive collective of musical might. Energetic\, contagious\, and flat out fun\, BBST weaves a sizzling thread through multiple genres to deliver a tapestry of award-winning original music that defies one description\,yet\, connects with everyone. Perhaps that has a something to do with the fact that BBST is made up of veteran musicians who have toured\, recorded\, or shared the stage with Leo Kottke\, The String Cheese Incident\, Lyle Lovett\, The Smashing Pumpkins\, Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, U2\, Asleep at the Wheel\, Garbage\, Willy Porter\, Riders in the Sky\, The Radiators\, David Grisman\, Alex DeGrassi\, Doc Watson\, Carrie Newcomer\, and Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band to name a few. Or\, it could simply be that Big Bang String Thing knows how to craft a great sound. \nTHE BAND: \nBob Westfall (mandolin\, guitar\, vocals\, songwriting) has studied and worked with some of the top acoustic players in the country -Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, and Alex DeGrassi. But\, while these influences are certainly evident\, Westfall’s songwriting are uniquely his own. An award-winning mandolinist\, Bob grew up in Texas and Minnesota\, and his style incorporates the best elements of storytelling with a hybrid jazz/pop/worldbeat/bluegrass feel. \nThe husband and wife team ofMary Gaines(bass) and Chris Wagoner (violin) provide the bottom and top of the BBST sound\, and have appeared in performance and on recordings with Westfall for over fifteen years. Gaines and Wagoner have similarly diverse backgrounds — formal classical training at the Univ. of WI\, jazz studies with the great bassist\, Richard Davis\, followed by years of performing and recording with jazz\, blues\, rock\, and folk artists and songwriters. \nMicah Olsan (guitar) has been an active performer in the Midwest music scenes for the last five years. His diverse songwriting mixes elements of folky acoustic fingerstyle\, funk\, rock\, and world music into a distinct sound that will leave your head bobbing and your toes tapping. His guitar work was recognized in the 2010 Shepherd Express reader poll when he was awarded runner up for best guitarist. He has been playing with BBST for the last 5 years.

SUMMARY:THE NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month\, but about once a year\, in December\, we deign to give them a weekend gig. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine. \nLike them on Facebook.

With his Chamber Blues ensemble\, he is credited with moving the blues from smokey clubs onto the classical concert stage and obliterating musical categorization in the process. \nHoward Levy is probably best known as a founding member of the GRAMMY winning group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He has recorded with a long list of greats such as Paul Simon and Dolly Parton\, as well as frequent guest appearances performing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion’s weekly National Public Radio show. \nAny audience member who attended their last rare foray together can tell you this evening is definitely one not to be missed.

His career began with classical violin lessons\, he soon picked up fiddling and from there it was only natural he would find himself playing along with his favorite rock tunes. Then at age 19 he was reborn with the discovery that you could play jazz on the violin. The resulting sound is swinging\, rocking\, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all\, Randy is a product of his time – someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. \n“Jazz violinists usually draw from one of two traditions. The oft repeated phrase following each performance is “…and a good time was had by all”. So join us for a historic romp through a medley of bluegrass\, and selected tunes from the 60’s & 70’s with one of Fort’s own\, locally harvested\, bands. These guys may be getting up there\, but they can still bash out the chords and belt out the harmonies that will make the hair on your arms stand straight up!?! \nAnd to boot\, this performance is for a good cause- all proceeds will go to the FORT ATKINSON FOOD PANTRY.  The music and the fun are free. DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy a leisurely casual New Year’s Eve hanging out with friends and friendly strangers at the Carpe\, continuing the hygge of this past month here.  This will be a food/music package deal\, and it’ll be a great and fun night of music with this trio. \nThe food: We will be serving delicious cajun shepherd’s pie (basically Paul Prudhomme’s recipe of a really nicely seasoned meatloaf topped with mashed potatoes and julienned vegetables\, but without the excessive heat) served with a green salad.  Those with any special food issues should notify us when placing reservations\, and we will do our best to accommodate.  A dessert course will be served during the set break. \nReservations at least 2 days before are strongly encouraged so that we can prepare the proper amount of food. Doors open at 6:30\, we’ll be serving dinner from 7:00 on. Music will start after 9:30. \nROBIN PLUER is an amazing chanteuse\, a sultry diva with pizzazz and jazzy style-  a multi-faceted songstress who elegantly but playfully delivers a mélange of vintage French ballads with a distinctive twist\, as well as some R & B gems and non-French ballads.  She was a member of the R&B Cadets and Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeeans. \nJoining her will be saxophonist (and singer) JULI WOOD (also once of the R&B Cadets) and guitarist CHRIS HANSON. \n“Last year’s treat was Juli Wood\, a gutsy tenor and baritone saxophonist who also sings with the earthy gusto of an R&B diva filtered through a hard bop sensibility.” Jazz Times \nRobin Pluer – Ms. Pluer is a perennial WAMI Award winner as well as the Shepherd Express’ Best Female Vocalist. She has composed and performed music with Paul Cebar and John Sieger. With Juli Wood\, Connie Grauer and Kim Zick (Mrs.Fun) she created The Rhythm Club to perform an eclectic array of jazz\, pop\, R&B and French songs. Robin collaborated with Peter Buffett\, recording a song for his album\, Songs from an East Side Attic. Robin combines vintage French chansons from the 20s\, 30s and 40s with contemporary songs which she performs each year at Bastille Days in Milwaukee. \nChris Hanson – If you’ve ever watched TV you’ve heard Chris’s music. Chris has been a Producer/Composer for TV and Film for the past 20 years\, including  Sex And The City\, 20/20\, The Sopranos and Desperate Housewives. Chris has been tearing up guitar riffs for 35 years with Wisconsin’s best. \nShould you want to come just for the show\, the ticket price of $25 will include choice of either a drink or the dessert offering.
