SUMMARY:GARNET ROGERS
DESCRIPTION:The big Canadian is back. \nIn a darkened bedroom\, lit only be the amber glow from an old floor model radio\, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds\, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry\, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later\, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. \nWithin ten years\, and barely out of high school\, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full- time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. \nHailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music”

SUMMARY:DAVID STODDARD/DAVID GLASER
DESCRIPTION:These two solo artists will perform as a duo this evening. \nNoted lyricist and composer DAVID STODDARD is one of Minnesota/Wisconsin’s most decorated songwriters. You may have heard him play at local venues or festivals\, or one of his many appearances on Minnesota Public Radio. \nHe’s played at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville\, Texas\, and been featured on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Tent Show Radio.” He has won the Kerrville New Folk award\, as well as songwriting awards at the South Florida Folk Festival\, the Minnesota Folk Festival\, and others. He has shared festival and concert stages with people like Juice Newton\, Leon Russell\, Rik Emmett\, Lou and Peter Berryman\, Michael Smith\, Pat Donohue\, and\, now (thoroughly confirming him as a unapologetic name dropper) David Glaser. He was once mistaken for George Winston at a bookstore in Milwaukee. True story- but that guy stuffed a dollar bill into his coffee cup. \nDAVID GLASER‘s songs are lush\, evocative\, and full of imagery – like an album of snapshots from his rich journey. an evening with david is a rollercoaster ride of style\, emotion and genre; you can expect everything from contemporary singer/songwriter fare to traditional offerings\, and many shades in between. David’s fluent guitar and mandolin skills have made him a sought after side man\, studio musician\, and guitar teacher. He performs regularly with Dan Navarro\, Stephanie Corby\, and Bob Sima\, among others. David offers a comprehensive guitar and mandolin workshop on many of his tour stops. He’s played Madison Square Garden and with folks like Morris Day\, Luther Vandross\, Jasper Isley\, Peabo Bryson and many others.

SUMMARY:HARPETH RISING
DESCRIPTION:HARPETH RISING \nBilled as an “Americana Sensation” by WSM 650\, this group of young classically trained musicians is making an immense impact wherever they play. The quartet brings an exciting and distinctive sound to the Americana genre.” They wowed the audience when they played here this spring\, and they will no doubt do it again. \nWith a banjo and fiddle\, you might think they’re traditional bluegrass\, but think again: cello and hand drums round out the group\, creating a truly new sound. A little bit bluegrass\, a little bit folk\, a little bit classical and whole lot of original\, Harpeth Rising is a band to watch.

SUMMARY:LAURIE McCLAIN
DESCRIPTION:LAURIE MCCLAIN \n“Laurie has got to be from another planet. I’ve never met anyone – except maybe Richie Havens – who is so open-hearted and full of love for humanity\, yet who appears to experience life on a different plane than everybody else. Her music is as innocent as it is informed by experience\, as playful as it is rooted\, and as detail-oriented as it is grand in scope. Lucky for the rest of us\, she’s translated her Earthly experience onto record\, and called it Ascend.”\n-DEVON SPROULE \n“Laurie is a true artist. She opens hearts and sings from a place of depth and love. She held my tough NYC audience with her masterful storytelling\, strong lyrics and vulnerable voice\, moving them to tears and laughter. If she is performing anywhere near you\, run to see her. You will not be disappointed; you will be transformed.”-KATHRYN\, KATHRYN’S HOUSE CONCERT SERIES\, NYC \n“Laurie’s voice has a raw\, genuine classic folk resonance that pulls you into every song.”\n-SINGER MAGAZINE \n“Laurie turns each venue into her own living room\, and each listener into a new friend with her disarming humor and passionate performance. Laurie’s songs explore the themes of identity\, growth\, friendship and love in a way that always honors the fundamental mysteries of the human journey. In this Mecca of songwriters\, she is a gem of uniqueness and authenticity.”\n-JM KEARNS

SUMMARY:JIM & VIVIAN CRAIG w/FRED CAMPEAU & MITCH THOMAS
DESCRIPTION:Mitch Thomas and Fred Campeau and Jim and Vivian Craig have put together an ukeclectic show that promises to bring a smile\, and maybe a tear or two. \nIn addition to their tight vocal blending\, the foursome stretch out with some instrumental surprises: Viv and Mitch on ukuleles\, Fred on guitar\, banjo\, and Hawaiian resonator guitar\, and Jim on concertina\, guitar\, and bass ukulele (yes\, you read that right). There’ll be old songs\, blue songs\, and some new songs\, written by Jim and Viv. \nFred Campeau and Mitch Thomas have been a team since the early 70’s\, when they met while both were performing around Chicago. Fred plays guitar\, banjo\, fiddle and harmonica\, and was a long-time member of the Volo Bogtrotters. In addition to playing guitar\, banjo and ukulele\, Mitch teaches choir\, theater and uke\, and is a two-time winner of the Wheatland Festival Folksinging Contest. \nJim and Vivian Craig have been harmonizing for almost forty years. When not loosely affiliated with Mitch and Fred\, Jim and Viv perform with Chicago-based Na Mele Aloha\, an Hawaiian music ensemble. \nAny of you who used to frequent the Green Dragon would have fond memories of them all.
