SUMMARY:PHIL LEE/ Meaghan Owens opens
DESCRIPTION:PHIL LEE \n“All this while keeping true to his unique and singular mission; to write songs that try to make sense out of this world\, open some eyes\, call out some fools and ring out some hard truths. Yet\, admirable as such pursuits may be he’s simply being true to who he is. Phil Lee’s music will make you think and laugh and maybe shed a tear or two but it also provides hours of playtime fun because all of those things are part of the package. He couldn’t do it any other way.\nPhil is a hipster madman Huck Finn meets Jack Kerouac.” Rick Allen \n“Along with working with the Flying Burrito Brothers\, driving a truck for Neil Young and playing drums for decades\, Lee has carved a unique niche for himself in the alt-country\, acoustic post-modern honky tonk world. Fans of Steve Forbert\, Townes Van Zandt\, Gram Parsons\, Guy Clark\, Phil Cody and Greg Brown will dig Lee’s strong fourth album.”\nJeff Schwachter / Atlantic City Weekly \n“….pure Phil Lee…Witty\, wicked\, compassionate\, profane\, misanthropic…Phil Lee and his friends wear their supreme musicianship lightly and this album is a street ahead of most things you’ll hear this year; it has a joie-de-vivre that no amount of jokily bitter lines can disguise.”\nJohn Davy / Flyinshoes Review \nOpener Meaghan Owens hailed from Milwaukee\, is now in Maui. Her music is eclectic-indie\, country\, folk\, filled with subtle connections to jazz and the blues.

SUMMARY:THE NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin graces us every 2nd Thursday of the month (usually). Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine. \nIt serves us well if you call to reserve.

SUMMARY:GRASS FOOD & LODGING- sold out!!
DESCRIPTION:SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT. Always some chance for last minute cancellations\, so if you live nearby\, you can call and see if any of that has happened. If you miss out here\, check out there Facebook page to see what your options are to see them on Saturday and Sunday. \nThe popular 1970’s bluegrass band is getting together for a reunion! Here at the Carpe will be one of the few chances to catch them\, so be sure to call to reserve your seats. \nOnce again\, with blazing fiddle breakdowns to beautifully harmonized ballads\, they will recreate the magic of their sound. These events are guaranteed to recharge any latent anti-disco sentiments of the time. Original members Dede Wyland – guitar\, and Peter Knupfer – fiddle\, Ken Finkel – banjo\, and Jim Price (JP) – mandolin\, will join with Bluegrass wizard Jon Peik on bass for the reunion dates. In addition\, local musician-à-terre\, Tom Schwark will supply basso to the group’s a capella renderings just as he did in the group’s heyday. You can expect a nostalgic and more mature revisiting of Bluegrass plus an in-person opportunity to hear one the best vocal trios on any stage – then or now. Here are the specs on some of the old band\, as well as info on newcomer Jon Peik. \n1977 Members:\nPeter B. Knupfer – Fiddle\nKen Finkel – Banjo\, Vocals\nDede Wyland – Guitar\, Vocals\nJimmy Driskell – Bass\, Vocal\nJim Price – Mandolin\, Vocals\nTom Schwark – Bass Vocals \nSpecial 2013 Reunion Member:\nJon Peik – Bass \nDede Wyland – Guitar\, Vocals \nDede’s pure and compelling voice has enchanted audiences around the globe\, and her driving rhythm guitar has powered the sound of many a bluegrass band including the popular Tony Trischka & Skyline and ’Grass\, Food & Lodging. As a teacher\, she uses her talents to help amateurs and professionals alike discover their voice. Bluegrass Unlimited\, in a January 2001 feature article\, said that Dede’s “gifts of vocal virtuosity\, musical expression\, and sheer positive force of personality have made her a valued presence in modern acoustic music.” She is often described as “a singer’s singer.” \nSince moving to Maryland in 1990\, Dede has become one of the most sought-after vocal instructors in the Washington\, DC\, area. In addition to her full schedule of private lessons\, she has taken her expertise to workshops and music camps from Tucson\, Arizona\, to Somerset\, England. Her recordings and concert performances with the cream of Washington’s bluegrass players earned her the Washington Area Music Association’s “Wammie” awards for 1999 (Female Bluegrass Vocalist) and 2004 (Bluegrass Vocalist). \nPeter Knupfer – Fiddle\, Vocalizations \nDr. Peter has been a professional bluegrass\, folk\, swing and jazz fiddle player for over 30 years. He has performed with Byron Berline\, Joel Mabus\, Alan Munde\, Donald Stiernberg\, John McCuen\, To ny Trischka\, Bill Evans\, Bill Keith\, Tim O’Brien\, Peter Wernick\, Greg Cahill\, Peter Ostroushko and Howard Levy. Peter teaches U.S. History at Michigan State University and lives with his family in East Lansing. “Peter Knupfer is one of those rare and wonderful fiddle players who can do it all\,” says mandolin virtuoso Donald Stiernberg. “Peter always brings a joyful intensity to the session and elevates his fellow musicians.” \nJim Price – Mandolin\, Vocals \nA Milwaukee native\, JP has developed enough instrument chops to become one of the area’s most truncated sidemen. Frequently called on by groups missing a “chopstick” JP perilously supplies mandolin\, guitar\, bass and vocals to the amazement of all and the bemusement of many. \nFrom the very beginning he would attempt the instrument no one else in the group enjoyed – and still does. As a fan once described the experience\, “You ain’t heard nothing!” And that\, my friend\, is definitive! \nAfter years and years on the road\, extirpating relationships\, the likes of Vince Gill\, Ricky Skaggs\, Buddy Griffin\, Jessie McReynolds\, John Parrot\, Sam Bush\, Vassar Clemmens\, Ben Schubert\, Bob Shane\, Katie Lauer\, John Hartford and yes\, even the great Jethro Burns – JP has confronted them all – briefly – but that’s sufficient for the man who covets his privacy to the exclusion of frequent appearances.\nJim Price – If you hear him only once\, it may just be enough. \nKen Finkel – banjo [Ken seems to have written this and not provided a bio on himself. Ed.] \nJon Peik– bass \nJon Peik has been actively performing and recording with various bands in the Midwest since 1986. From blues and classic country to gospel and bluegrass\, his playing is well rounded and tasteful on several instruments. Jon is accomplished on guitar and mandolin as well as 5 string banjo\, which is his primary focus. He specializes in the three-finger Scruggs style found in traditional bluegrass\, adding elements from blues and country to create melodic and rhythmic interest. \nJon played mandolin\, banjo\, and keyboard for 8 years with the Pitneys–a gospel band from the Rockford Illinois area. He is a founding member of Madison’s Nob Hill Boys who have been featured on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. \nJon teaches banjo at Spruce Tree Music in Madison and at Hartland Music in Hartland. He also has been an instructor for the Dane County Bluegrass in the Schools program. In addition to his musical endeavors\, Jon works for a small publishing company in Chicago. He currently lives in Wauwatosa with his wife Cathy.

SUMMARY:PETER MULVEY\, Kaia Fowler\, Perry Baird\, & Jessica Kennedy- a benefit for the Fowler Family
DESCRIPTION:Please consider coming to this night of music and community to help out a local family.* \nLocal singer-songwriter Kaia Fowler’s family has been facing some major challenges these past 2 years. Her husband\, Scott\, went from feeling like a healthy 42-year-old man when the New Year rang in on January 1\, 2011 to facing one of the deadliest and most difficult to treat cancers by April of that year. Since then\, he has undergone surgery\, radiation and a combined total of about 11 months of chemotherapy. His chemotherapy treatment is ongoing with no planned end-date. It is keeping him alive and is the recommended treatment for as long as it continues to work. \nEven with insurance\, costs for medical care and travel to treatment add up. Due to the severe anemia and other side effects\, Scott was not able to keep working at his job\, so\, as of March\, the family has gone from two incomes to one. Kaia and friends wanted to hold a benefit concert to build community support and to raise some funds to help with cancer-related expenses. \nMusic will begin with Kaia Fowler and Jessica Kennedy at 7. Perry Baird will play at 7:45\, and headliner PETER MULVEY at 8:30. \n*Come to enjoy the music and shared hope. If you cannot come please donate to the Scott Jaeger benefit fund by mail or in person at any branch of the Fort Community Credit Union.

SUMMARY:JEFFREY FOUCAULT w/Hayward Williams
DESCRIPTION:JEFFREY FOUCAULT is following up his recent appearance with his band Cold Satellite with a solo performance. He will be joined by HAYWARD WILLIAMS. \nMost of you know Wisconsin bornandraised Jeffrey\, but those of you who don’t would be wiser if you found out. \nAccolades could go on forever\, so only a few are included. \nTIME OUT CHICAGO: \n“Wisconsin’s Jeffrey Foucault is the type of singer-songwriter whose talents sneak up on you. On paper\, his description could apply to countless similar acts. In practice\, Foucault frequently proves himself better than the rest\, recalling the romanticized Americana of Bruce Springsteen\, gazing through rain-streaked railway-car windows.” \nROUGHSTOCK: \n“Like a great Townes Van Zandt\, Bruce Robison\, Guy Clark or Rodney Crowell album\, Horse Latitudes is the kind of record that you listen to from start to finish and then sit there and marvel at how well the recording is put together… the songs are simply stunning in their breadth and lyrical scope”. \nSANJOSE.COM: \n“Jeffrey Foucault’s music has an ethereal\, haunted quality to it that makes descriptors such as “roots soundscapes” and “old-weird-atmospheres” a bit more accurate than the typical “folk” or “Americana” tags… Foucault’s real strength lies in his ability to coax the feeling out of the darkest corners of a tune. His latest release\, Horse Latitudes\, is being touted as one of the best Americana releases of the year…”

SUMMARY:RICHARD PAUL THOMAS
DESCRIPTION:RICHARD PAUL THOMAS (his friends call him RpT) is a free-thinking dreamer and Texas-based songwriter with decades of love\, life and laughter to share. His songwriting spans a wide range of musical genres and emotional experiences ranging from light hearted fun to challenging one’s convictions about life and our place in the world. His writing and performance style encompasses elements of R&B\, jazz\, ballads and good old rock n’ roll. RpT’s soulful voice ranges from thermal to edgy reflecting the musical influences of a lifetime. His thought-provoking lyrics speak to the heart and soul of the listener while thoroughly entertaining his audiences. \nOn his latest album\, Wings of My Heart\, Thomas whittles his diverse array of influences and lifetime of experiences — including producing environmental festivals for Jacques Cousteau’s Cousteau Society — into a dozen self-penned tunes. Produced by Chris Gage and recorded at Austin’s Moonhouse Studio\, it features musical contributions from Gage and his wife\, Christine Albert\, plus Kristin deWitt\, Bruce Logan\, Glenn Fukunaga and Steven Bernstein. \nThomas prides himself on exploring a wide range of musical genres — from rock and R&B to jazz and soulful balladry — and emotions that travel from lighthearted and fun to serious and introspective. His thought-provoking examinations of life’s joys and challenges come from the heart and speak to the soul. \nBorn in Milwaukee\, Thomas started playing guitar in 1957\, inspired by rising stars such as Buddy Holly\, Ritchie Valens\, the Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison. Captured by the British Invasion\, he spent his high school years performing covers of the Kinks\, the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. He met his first wife\, Susan\, in a folk group he’d joined; they wound up writing\, recording (A Burst of Life) and touring together for 10 years\, sharing stages with artists such as Anne Murray\, Loggins & Messina\, Helen Reddy\, Townes Van Zandt\, James Lee Stanley\, Odetta and Michael Martin Murphey. \nIn the late ‘70s\, Thomas became an associate director for the Cousteau Society\, producing festivals meant to raise awareness about environmental issues. During that time\, he met his second wife\, Linda\, and they settled in her hometown of Salado\, Texas. They had a son and Thomas built a career as a software consultant. \nIn 2011\, Thomas released the sound track from his one-man musical titled Captured Rainbow\, based on the life of a consultant who spends most of his time on the road. The two-act play\, performed in Austin\, Milwaukee\, Chicago and Salado\, features stories and songs about his experiences and the people he meets along the way. One of its songs\, “Salado\,” was adopted by the Village of Salado\, which stated in an official proclamation that it “represents our community’s spirit\, character and history.” \nThomas calls the experience of recording his latest work with Gage “joyful\, fun-filled and humbling.” \nThe title track reaches back to the days of Buddy Holly and all the songs that “never grow old” — songs that become a part of life’s soundtrack and “sing to the wings of my heart.”
