SUMMARY:JIM & VIVIAN CRAIG with FRED CAMPEAU & MITCH THOMAS
DESCRIPTION:Mitch Thomas and Fred Campeau and Jim and Vivian Craig have put together an ukeclectic show that promises to bring a smile\, and maybe a tear or two. \nIn addition to their tight vocal blending\, the foursome stretch out with some instrumental surprises: Viv and Mitch on ukuleles\, Fred on guitar\, banjo\, and Hawaiian resonator guitar\, and Jim on concertina\, guitar\, and bass ukulele (yes\, you read that right). There’ll be old songs\, blue songs\, and some new songs\, written by Jim and Viv. \nFred Campeau and Mitch Thomas have been a team since the early 70’s\, when they met while both were performing around Chicago. Fred plays guitar\, banjo\, fiddle and harmonica\, and was a long-time member of the Volo Bogtrotters. In addition to playing guitar\, banjo and ukulele\, Mitch teaches choir\, theater and uke\, and is a two-time winner of the Wheatland Festival Folksinging Contest. \nJim and Vivian Craig have been harmonizing for almost forty years. When not loosely affiliated with Mitch and Fred\, Jim and Viv perform with Chicago-based Na Mele Aloha\, an Hawaiian music ensemble. \nAny of you who used to frequent the Green Dragon would have fond memories of them all.

SUMMARY:THE NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin graces us every 2nd Thursday of the month (usually). Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine. \nIt serves us well if you call to reserve.

SUMMARY:JOSH HARTY/CHRIS WAGONER/MARY GAINES/JIM SCHWALL
DESCRIPTION:JOSH HARTY CHRIS WAGONER MARY GAINES JIM SCHWALL \nJosh keeps alive the tradition of country\, blues and folk known collectively as Americana music. For the past many months he and his girlfriend Jess have been touring the country in a van\, playing and living and collecting stories to shape into songs. Should be a fantastic evening of music\, as Josh returns to his most recent home and brings along some of Madison’s finest to play with him. \n” … Singer-songwriter Josh Harty has everything to make it. A warm-sounding voice that refers to that of James Taylor or Gordon Lightfoot\, a guitar technique many artists can only dream of\, and narrative texts taken from life. . . The sincerity of the songs shines and the subtle and beautifully detailed instrumentation ensure that you always stay focused…” rootstime.be \n“The first thing that hits you is Harty’s world weary voice on Whiskey & Morphine as a song that talks of self-destruction and sets the tone for what is to come. . . Harty draws you into his songs and you are a part of his world.” -Stephen Rapid \n“I reckon this’ll be the third album for Wisconsin native Josh Harty. Coming from an intensely musical background\, he seems to have been playing and performing most of his 30-odd years and his fluency on the acoustic guitar is a testament to all those years of playing. As a songwriter\, I would say he’s striving to be as honest\, as true to an emotion\, as he can possibly get. . . there is a dignity to this music making that leaves us feeling enriched for the experience.” -John Davy No Depression! \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:KAIA FOWLER
DESCRIPTION:KAIA FOWLER‘s reemergence as a performing artist in 2008 led to the release of her solo CD\, Seams of My Heart in 2010. Since then\, Kaia has expanded into the Madison area and beyond performing regularly and selling her CD at shows and online. \nThe recording project enabled Kaia to work with outstanding musicians including Randy Sabien\, who brought his violin and mandolin wizardry to the album\, and Sam Steffke whose keyboard skills adorn the jazzy song “Let Him Be.” Local dobro master Paul Bast also appears on three songs on the album. \nFollowing the release of Seams of My Heart\, Kaia was invited to play her song “Who Are You?” as a guest at Michelle Shocked’s concert in Madison\, September of 2010. Encouraged by Shocked\, who wrote “Thanks for sharing your voice and talent with my audience\, Kaia. What a beautiful song!” \nKaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical metaphors\, intense melodies and experimental chord use. Her voice\, while distinct\, has subtle similarities to Natalie Merchant\, being similarly supple\, strong and alluring. Other influences have included Carole King\, the Indigo Girls\, Carrie Newcomer\, Sarah McClachlan\, Patty Griffin and Paul Simon. \nSeams of My Heart earned a glowing review from the Americana Gazette and airplay on the Women of Substance online radio station. Andy Ziehli of The Americana Gazette says of Kaia’s songs\, “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” He continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010)

SUMMARY:LARRY PENN/ JOHN SIEGER/ MARK DVORAK
DESCRIPTION:A whoppin’ night of great music with three great guys: \nThis is the third or fourth of these shows with the “three grumpy amigos”\, and they have been a delight each time\, with the audience clamoring for another grumpy get-together. Don’t miss out on the hottest thing in showbiz. \nLarry Penn sings and tells stories of hard work\, working people\, trains\, trucks\, life on the road\, love\, nonsense\, and flamingos. Noted for their elegance in simplicity\, his songs are not only popular with audiences\, but are acclaimed by other artists\, many of whom have recorded their own renditions of Larry’s songs. His performances are delightful.  \nMark Dvorak    plays folk and blues on banjo and guitar – carrying on the tradition of stalwarts like the above-lauded Mr. Penn.   “Mark is a charismatic performer with a spark of gentle passion that lights every concert hall and every greenway where he lifts his voice in celebration of the old songs. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer who follows unerringly in the footsteps of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie\,” and his song writing has been called “wondrous” and “profound.” \nLike Larry\,  John Sieger is another Milwaukee gem\, known as a prolific and talented songwriter with a semi-country bent whose songs have impressed Dwight Yoakam\, Jerry Harrison\, The BoDeans\, Robbie Fulks and Flaco Jimenez enough to record them. He has been in numerous Milwaukee bands\, including the R&B Cadets\, Semi-Twang\, the SubContinentals. Roots rock\, country\, R&B- John runs the gamut.
