SUMMARY:CORKY SIEGEL w/ RANDY SABIEN
DESCRIPTION:Fine and fun collaboration between two geniuses: \nCorky Siegel \n“There’s a fine line between a genius and a madman – and Corky walks it.”\n– Joe Nardome’s Gallery of Sound \nStereophile Magazine says; “… fantastic … I’ve never heard anyone play harp with this much body and harmonic delicacy … I guarantee you’ve never heard anything quite like it.” \nCorky Siegel has earned an international reputation as one of the world’s great blues harmonica masters. He is a composer\, blues pianist\, singer / songwriter\, and recent winner of the Lila Wallace/Reader’s Digest/Meet the Composer’s national award for chamber music composition and the Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award for Music Composition. \nMr. Siegel’s partnership in the renowned Siegel-Schwall Band\, his performances as soloist with orchestras world-wide\, and his collaborations with conductor Seiji Ozawa in bringing a ground-breaking blues-classical sound to national attention are all a reflection of Mr. Siegel’s prodigious talent. Mr. Siegel continues to perform as guest soloist with symphony orchestras world-wide\, which have included the New York Philharmonic\, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande\, the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, Orquestra Metropolitana De Lisboa in Portugal\, and most recently the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal\, the NHK Symphony in Japan\, and the Philadelphia Orchestra with Maestro Charles Dutoit. In addition to ongoing tours with Maestro Dutoit\, Corky has continued to perform numerous symphonic collaborations through the years with Doc Severinsen. Corky has also recorded on Sony International by touring globally from time to time through the invitation of Dr. Subramaniam\, India’s greatest Eastern classical violin virtuoso. \nRandy Sabien \n“Jazz violinists usually draw from one of two traditions. The best of both can be found in the superb Randy Sabien… he combines classical technique and folk energy in a program that’s still strictly jazz.”\nUSA TODAY \n“…The resulting sound is swinging\, rocking\, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all\, Randy is a product of his time – someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. “

SUMMARY:CHRIS PUREKA
DESCRIPTION:Chris Pureka \n NEWS FLASH: SHOW IS SOLD OUT 4:15 pm Tuesday\n \nNOTA BENE: Chris seems to have a following very willing to come out even on a Tuesday night to Fort Atkinson. As it indicates elsewhere on our website\, you are urged to call to make reservations. Our room holds only 60ish people\, and we have 48 reservations as of this writing at 10:00 Monday night. Reservations are held until 15 minutes before showtime. Those who wish to eat should come considerably earlier. \n“A New England folkie with a parched\, wounded voice and a mean way with an acoustic guitar\, Pureka makes romantic depression seem\, somehow\, invigorating.”-LA Daily News \n“An interviewer asked Chris Pureka to sum up her music as a haiku. I will: Folky sorrowful songs of loneliness and hurt\, longing to reunite. Her tunes have the grave Appalachian flavor of Neil Young and Gillian Welch; her guitar playing is subdued but quietly virtuosic. And her voice can be a desolate whisper or a bitter accusation. There’s no comfort\, for her\, in the clarity of her observations.” – John Pareles\, THE NEW YORK TIMES

SUMMARY:KAIA FOWLER
DESCRIPTION:Kaia Fowler \nCome on down to hear the mellifluous tones and tunes of local talent Kaia. \nAndy Ziehli of The Americana Gazette says of Kaia’s songs\, “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” He continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010 issue)

SUMMARY:LEE MURDOCK
DESCRIPTION:Lee Murdock \nLee Murdock has uncovered a boundless body of music and stories in the Great Lakes. There is an amazing timelessness in this music. Great Lakes songs are made of hard word\, hard living\, ships that go down and ships that come in. \nThe music is grounded in the work song tradition\, from the rugged days of lumberjacks and wooden sailing schooners. Murdock comes alongside with ballads of contemporary commerce and revelry in the grand folk style. Lee’s fans have discovered a sweetwater treasure in his songs about the Great Lakes\, finding drama and inspiration in the lives of sailors and fishermen\, lighthouse keepers\, ghosts\, shipwrecks\, outlaws and everyday heroes. \nWith a deeper understanding of the folk process\, Lee’s repertoire combines historical research and contemporary insights. Making folk music for the modern era\, Lee Murdock’s work is a documentary and also an anthem to the people who live\, work\, learn and play along the shores of the Great Lakes today. \n“I’m interested in trying to find the life in these songs; in making music that’s exciting to people today. I am looking for the songs and the interesting stories\, not only for the people who already enjoy folk music\, but for those who think they don’t like folk music.”\nLee Murdock \n“There is a real wealth of songs and stories from the Great Lakes which have not yet been explored\,” says Lee. Lee composed many of these stories into songs\, “because they tell such fascinating and inspiring stories of people and events\, and because no song has survived from traditional sources.” \nHis musical arrangements of new and traditional folk ballads\, chanteys and work songs are enjoyed by audiences with contemporary musical tastes\, even if they have not listened to much folk music in the past. With this musical style\, Lee hopes to introduce folk music to new audiences\, as well as entertaining the serious fans of maritime and traditional music. \n“More than anything else\, audiences are drawn to performers with passion. Lee Murdock’s passion is the sea\, and it’s infectious.”\nJim Blum\, WKSU Radio\, Kent\, Ohio \nLee Murdock began his performing career in the Chicago area in the mid 1970’s\, expanding his repertoire of blues and popular music as his interest in folk music and the maritime tradition grew. \nInterestingly\, it was a one-week residency with the Philadelphia Folksong Society which first linked Lee’s musical identity with the Great Lakes. After a week of in-school performances which they sponsored\, Lee took their enthusiastic response to heart\, and has been taking his Great Lakes music programs to school children and adult and family concerts ever since. Educational programs continue to be one important aspect of the 150 shows Lee presents every year in the U.S. and Canada. \n“The premier interpreter of songs and tales about the Great Lakes … Murdock’s regionalist approach does the area proud.”\nPaul-Emile Comeau\, Dirty Linen Magazine
