SUMMARY:DAVE RAMONT & DAVE NELSON
DESCRIPTION:Dave Ramont with Dave Nelson- Call it Americana\, roots-pop\, folk-slop\, whatever- Dave (Ramont) aims to spread these songs around like a thin layer of grease on a cast iron skillet. And when no one’s looking he’ll likely kick something down the street… \nWatch them here . \n
Differentiating oneself in the burgeoning field of alternative-country artists is a tricky proposition these days\, but Dave Ramont stands tall in the crowd. On Scrawny\, his third CD\, the Chicago-based singer-songwriter imbues his acoustic-based compositions with a rustic charm that’s unfettered and right to the point. Employing a variety of roots-oriented instrumentation that includes banjo\, mandolin\, and accordion\, Ramont constructs minimalist arrangements that frame his sturdy melodies in softly lit settings.\nHigh points on the CD include the cloppity\, reggae-tinged “Coat\,” the cowboy waltz “I Wanna Marry a Waitress\,” and the hymn-like\, string laden “Shoestring” (which features fine backing vocals from fellow Chicago singer Marylou O’Brien Fischer).\nPitching in on Scrawny is a tight-knit ensemble that adds subtle musical shades to Ramont’s plucked acoustic guitar and soulful\, twang-tinged tenor. Of particular note are Tom Jancauskas (bass)\, Gerald Dowd (drums)\, Scott Stevenson (accordion)\, Larry Rossi (horns)\, and Dave Nelson (National steel\, dobro\, and dulcimer).\nFrom start to finish\, Scrawny glows with a minimalist\, incandescent beauty.
\nRussell Hall
Performing Songwriter \nDave Nelson has major credentials as a member of the popular midwestern band Heartsfield: “Soulful\, down-home sound. Distinct vocal harmonies. Rootsy\, swampy\, foot-stompin’ country rock with bits of folk and jazz blended in. A ‘guitar army’ backed up with fiddle\, mandolin\, jaw harp and drums\, Heartsfield is a slice of Americana. ”\nLee B. Roberts\, The Journal Times

SUMMARY:PEARL & THE BEARD
DESCRIPTION:Pearl and the Beard is three voices\, one cello\, one guitar\, one glockenspiel\, one melodica\, several drums\, one accordion\, ninety-six teeth\, and one soul. \nFormer strangers Jocelyn Mackenzie\, Emily Hope Price\, and Jeremy Styles were united in the great city of New York. Each had migrated there from a far corner of the nation with naught but food in their pockets and money in their bellies. Each had the same true love. Since then\, the three have nested\, and their unique brand of brightly melodic songcraft continues to blossom of its own accord. \nThe band’s genre-bending and expectation-defying sound has since burst the trio out of the confines of the New York music scene\, allowing them to traipse the United States on a multitude of national tours and across the pond for a hugely successful inaugural UK tour in 2011. They’ve caught the attention of The Boston Globe\, Filter Magazine\, The Wall Street Journal and thousands of wildly dedicated fans both local and international. Their haunting music video for “The Lament of Coronado Brown” even made its debut on NPR’s acclaimed music site\, All Songs Considered. \nPearl and the Beard’s live show is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. The band captivates their audience from first note to last\, leaving fans and press alike completely engrossed in the world they’ve created with their soaring and sensual songs. From subway platform to park to field to brightly lit venue stage\, Pearl and the Beard take over whatever space they occupy\, including the people occupying it with them\, prompting The Wall Street Journal to comment “…as Pearl and the Beard joyfully belted… to a growing crowd on the [subway] platform… commuters missed their trains to stay and listen\, unsure what was happening—only that it was a New York moment not to be missed.”

SUMMARY:WILLY PORTER / LJ BOOTH
DESCRIPTION:Willy Porter and LJ Booth both hail from Wisconsin\, mostly\, have written a few songs together\, are both articulate and entertaining and great musicians. What’s not to like? \nLocal (Milwaukee)hero Willy– what about him? \n“Porter plays intelligent\, groove — heavy folk with hearty abandon”\n— Santa Fe New Mexican \n“With his exquisite\, tranquil guitar work\, Willy Porter could easily astonish an audience without singing one note. His ability to engage the audience with his personality and intellect raises Porter from the level of guitar wonk into the realm of masterful performer.”\n— Earvolution \n“Willy Porter is a relaxed and fearless performer who’ll entertain you as well as move you.”\n— Acoustic Guitar Magazine\n“Porter accentuates well – rendered tales with spit – fire – percussive acoustic guitar strumming and fiery color – chord picking.”\n— Billboard \n“…[How To Rob A Bank] will remain timely for years to come…”\n— The Onion \n“[Willy Porter] can captivate an audience as completely as can an entire rock band.”\n— Washington Times \nAnd that LJ Booth\, what does he have going for him? \n“Seasoned performers are priceless in the era of short-term ‘discoveries’\, and LJ Booth is among the most adept and accomplished songwriters and storytellers in the country. His comfortable presence\, stellar songs\, and stage banter makes for a concert experience that resonates…” Mike Meyer\, KRVM-fm\, Oregon Public Broadcasting\,\nHope Chest Productions \n“LJ Booth is as literate as they come. As a lyricist\, he has the light touch of Lyle Lovett\, the unabashed honesty of Leonard Cohen and the sprawling\, joyous life of Walt Whitman. The plainness of his imagery and the economy of his phrasing is only made more effective by his glittering guitar parts and the simple grace of his songs.” \n“His vocal approach also possesses the effective simplicity of Lyle Lovett with a little Gordon Lightfoot thrown in. On the more raucous tunes like “Hold On!” and the fiddle-driven “Changing Sky”\, Booth is still completely in control\, driving the songs straight through to their satisfying conclusions. But it’s on the quiet moments that Booth really shines\, wheeling through joy\, freedom and longing with simple grace.” Performing Songwriter

SUMMARY:FOUCAULT/ Friedman SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT Call if you have any doubts. \nJeffrey Foucault has a record of outstanding records as long as your arm. The kudos can’t fit into cyberspace\, so they are creating a new dimension. \nTHE NEW YORKER:\n“Jeffrey Foucault\, sings stark\, literate songs that are as wide open as the landscape of his native Midwest.”\n\nMOJO:\n“Songwriting brilliance.” \nTHE IRISH TIMES:\n“Quietly brilliant…” \nUNCUT:\n“The music of Wisconsin native Foucault is the kind so many aspire to but never attain: beat-up troubadour folk whittled to dolorous perfection…”\n \nBEACONPASS:\n“Jeffrey Foucault pronounces his name “Folk-alt\,” and makes saying difficult things seem as easy as this straightforward pronunciation of his French surname. Praised for its tendency to combine raw\, weathered emotion with measured elegance\, Foucault’s music feels unadulterated and innate\, with veins of pedal steel\, the big-skied openness of Neil Young and the bizarre\, haunting imagery that you might find in a Flannery O’Connor story.” \nLongtime disciple of the rich and strange music that sings behind the American veil\, Foucault has spent the last decade mining the darker seams of country and blues\, producing a string of spare and elemental albums of rare power while garnering accolades across the United States and overseas for a tersely elegant brand of songwriting set apart by its haunting imagery and weather-beaten cool. He lives in Western Massachusetts. BUT HE HAS WISCONSIN WRITTEN ALL OVER HIM. \nOpening for Jeffrey is the formidable Andy Friedman artist poet turned musician songwriter. VILLAGE VOICE: “Here’s what happens to twang when it steeps in Brooklyn gin joints instead of Austin honky-tonks: it becomes a bit darker and more gnarled\, and though it likes the sun on its back\, it can thrive in the shadows. Friedman’s new Laserbeams and Dreams is peppered with the kind of bluesy unrest that sets your mind reeling\, and between the Jerry Jeff whimsy and Michael Hurley rumination\, it’s a great soundtrack for the worries that arrive during late-winter dusk.”
