SUMMARY:THE NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece outfit featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin do a once-a-month performance here\, usually the 2nd Thursday. \nIts various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. (Jerry Wisentowski will be gone until March recovering from surgery.) Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. SUMMARY:CLIFF EBERHARDT/Tim Fast
DESCRIPTION:Cliff E. is a long-time favorite- a talented performer who will have you LOL. Tim Fast will open and accompany him. \nRed House recording artist Cliff Eberhardt knew by age seven that he was going to be a singer and songwriter. As a child Cliff taught himself to play guitar\, piano\, base and drums. In his teens Eberhardt was fortunate enough to live close to the Main Point (one of the best folk clubs on the East Coast)\, he cut his teeth listening to the likes of James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, Bruce Springsteen\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Muddy Waters\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Mississippi John Hurt – receiving an early and impressive tutorial in acoustic music. At the same time\, he was also listening to great pop songwriters like Cole Porter\, the Gershwins\, and Rodgers and Hart\, which explain his penchant for great melodies and clever lyrical twists. \nA driving force of the Greenwich Village New Folk movement and well known among his peers\, Cliff’s songs have been covered by the likes of Richie Havens\, Buffy St. Marie\, Erasure\, Lucy Kaplansky and the folk superstar band “Cry\, Cry\, Cry” (Dar Williams\, Richard Shindell\, Lucy Kaplansky). \n“Eberhardt is as welcome as iced tea in August.”\n—People \n“Eberhardt is better than ever\, Steve McQueening his way into your heart at about ninety-eight miles an hour\, kicking ass with fresh insight and new ways to lament old yearnings.”\n—Philly Rock Guide \n“In a field of sensitive\, new-age guys\, Eberhardt digs deeper into life’s complexities and discovers much more compelling things to celebrate.”\n—The Boston Phoenix \n“Eberhardt sings with passion and with wit…what makes his brand so rare is the self-assurance and poise he brings to his nearly flawless show.”\n—The New York Post \n“Up and down the line\, as a writer\, guitarist\, performer\, and vocalist\, Eberhardt is the equal of any singer-songwriter in contemporary pop. With unequaled directness and with a stark\, raw presentation\, he carves out miniature masterpieces\, giving voice to life’s complexities and ambiguities.”\n—Berkshire Eagle \n“Eberhardt approaches the guitar with stylistic eloquence\, with the hooks\, licks and grooves that could easily rank him among those who are singularly known as guitar virtuosos.”\n—Taconic Newspapers \n“Eberhardt is a superb singer\, with a vast credible range of emotions\, and a soulfulness that draws from rock and pop\, but also from the best folk ballad styles.”\n– The Boston Globe \nThe Long Road (****)- “Eberhardt has complicated emotions and he articulates them with stunning clarity”\n– The Philadelphia Inquirer \n“If life were fair and stardom based on raw talent\, Cliff Eberhardt would be a household name.”\n—The Washington Times \nOn his sixth album\, Eberhardt\, who calls the Pioneer Valley home\, couches his ballads in rootsy\, folksy arrangements that emphasize his bluesy guitar playing and his soulful\, Ray Charles-like vocals. Eberhardt’s melodies\, however\, are as sophisticated as ever — he is the missing link between Paul McCartney and Cole Porter.\n– Seth Rogovey \n“Cliff Eberhardt voted one of the top 100 Folk Artists of the last 20 years”\nWUMB Radio – Best of 2002\, 2003\,2004

SUMMARY:LOS ZOMBIES
DESCRIPTION:The Zombies will do a regular (as regular as anything gets for the Carpe or the Zombies) 3rd Thursday of each month gig here. \nPlaying music that would make the Lorine Niedecker Poetry Foundation start mumbling verses of Virgil\, Los Zombies keep it high and keep it getting higher* . Then when it seems really high they go even more higherer. After a brief stint as a military entertainment band touring Afghanistan and other even more top secreter regions the “Zombies” moved to Ixonia and began assembling a crackerjack team of future-musician-warriors with tactics that could blow up any stage (using zen and other non-western mystical sounding techniques\, like haiku\, for example). They then set their sites on THE CARPE. A frothy bunch of anti-war peaceniks\, well-meaning environmentalists\, and probably vegetarians–the locals at The Carpe were (and are) more than this lurid\, deep thinking bunch of hawks could endure\, and to boot\, right in the aorta of the heartland. So re-boot Los Zombies 6.0 and check out this unusually artful and extremely glamorous parade of good taste and high born contempt for the working man and all he stands for\, or makes\, or whatever. LONG LIVE THE LEISURE CLASS AND THE WARS WE FUND!!\nLos Zombies consists of Sgt. Casey Davis\, Col. Steve Tesmer\, Black Belt Certified Matt Kelly\, and Phd. Jeremy “Guzzo” Pinc. \n*Los Zombies LLC. does not endorse the use of drugs in most circumstances. Ask your doctor which drug may be right for you.

SUMMARY:SMALL POTATOES
DESCRIPTION:Small Potatoes: This Chicago based folk duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso say it has taken them years of careful indecision to develop a repertoire they describe as “Celtic to Cowboy.” Superb musicianship and showmanship\, award-winning songwriting\, and a strong sense of tradition has made them\, as Dirty Linen Magazine once said\, “one of the most polished\, inventive\, and entertaining shows on the circuit.”

SUMMARY:Poetry and Music with CATHYRN COFELL & OBVIOUS DOG
DESCRIPTION:Obvious Dog has performed their own blues and jazz throughout Wisconsin since 2001. In 2009 they (Bill Orth and Bruce Dethlefsen) joined forces with poet Cathryn Cofell to fuse poetry and music in a way that rocks and rolls antiquated notions of what makes us sing. Both Bruce and Cathryn are highly-published\, award-winning poets and regional performance favorites\, frequently requested for public radio and TV\, readings\, workshops and keynotes. Since the debut of the CD Lip in 2010\, Obvious Dog has performed to packed houses throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. \n“Cofell’s writing is refreshing\, fast forward\, deep diving\, free flowing\, free for all\, shocking\, heartbreaking\, tear jerking\, hilarious\, yearning\, Thelma & Louise\, fearless\, laying there in front of you just clear and murky as life. Tiny Little Crushes is a thousand points of light that have passed through Cofell’s colored glasses and been poured out into your eyes. She is so smart\, hip\, fast\, and real.”\nCharles P. Ries / Poetry Editor / Word Riot \nBill Orth has played guitar\, bass guitar and sang for 50+ years\, an accomplished musician in numerous rock\, blues and jazz bands. Within the last 10 years he has recorded two cds of original music with the band ‘annaRANaway’. Many of his compositions have been created with ‘annaRANaway’ bandmate\, Bruce Dethlefsen; together they now perform this and new material as Obvious Dog. \nBruce Dethlefsen is Wisconsin’s Poet Laureate. His collection Breather (Fireweed Press)\, won an Outstanding Achievement award from the Wisconsin Library Association. He also has two chapbooks\, A Decent Reed and Something Near the Dance Floor\, and his poems were featured twice on The Writer’s Almanac. He plays bass\, harmonica\, and drums and performs original music with poetry as Obvious Dog. \nDuring the break\, the following poets will poetize in their singular fashion. \nRichard Roe began writing poetry in his mid-30s and has kept at it ever since. A preacher’s kid who’s lived in Ohio and New Jersey\, he has a background in history and economics but\, more importantly\, in music\, often playing music to accompany his poems. He has published three books of poems\, most recently Knots of Sweet Longing. If he could start over\, he would like to sing in opera\, especially the rôles of Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Boris in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. \nKarla Huston writes in Appleton\, Wisconsin\, and is the author of six chapbooks of poetry\, most recently An Inventory of Lost Things\, Centennial Press\, 2009. Winner of several writing awards\, she has published poetry\, reviews and interviews in many state and national journals. Her poem “Theory of Lipstick” was awarded a Pushcart Prize and appears in The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses (2012).

SUMMARY:BILL STAINES
DESCRIPTION:Bill Staines\, a seasoned troubador singing mostly his own songs\, has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today\, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65\,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances and one reviewer wrote\, “He has a sense of timing to match the best standup comic.” \n“Any new song that can live comfortably beside the well-worn songs of folk tradition has a good chance of surviving the test of time. Such\, we believe\, are the songs of Bill Staines” — Charles “Sandy” Paton\, Folk Legacy Records

SUMMARY:GARNET ROGERS
DESCRIPTION:Garnet Rogers has established himself as “One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music.” \nResolutely independent\, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way.

SUMMARY:STEVE FORBERT / Sammy Llanas
DESCRIPTION:Steve Forbert\nGrowing up in Meridian\, Steve Forbert first picked up the guitar at age 10 and spent his high school years playing in a variety of local bands. Frustrated with his job as a truck driver\, the restless singer/songwriter moved to New York City at 21\, where he performed for spare change in Grand Central Station before working his way up through the Manhattan club circuit. Performing at Folk City and eventually opening for artists like Talking Heads and John Cale at CBGB\, Forbert became something of a local sensation and signed his first record deal with the CBS-distributed label Nemperor. \nReleased at the height of the new wave explosion\, his 1978 debut Alive On Arrival offered a first look at his colorful mix of spare acoustic introspection and scrappy rock ‘n’ roll and became one of the year’s most acclaimed albums. While critics tagged him—like Bruce Springsteen and John Prine before him—“the next Dylan\,” Forbert never put too much stock in the comparison and forged his own path\, expanding his audience substantially with 1979’s commercial breakthrough Jackrabbit Slim and his era defining hit single\, “Romeo’s Tune.” \nBy this time\, the heyday of the classic 70s singer-songwriters was quickly fading. Songs by America\, Carole King\, James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot were quickly giving way on the pop charts to Van Halen\, Foreigner and Pat Benatar. As the seventies gave way to the eighties\, Forbert’s plainspoken\, heartfelt early recordings were among the few keeping the joyful and innocent spirit of the genre alive. \nGiven the mythic nature of Forbert’s early career\, one can be forgiven for wondering what he’s done since parting company with Geffen Records after they released The American in Me in 1992. The fact is that Steve Forbert has never stopped writing\, singing and performing and has released twelve studio albums\, three live sets and four DVDs since 1978 – to say nothing of the several compilations and archival releases that are available through his website. \nAs frosting on the cake\, Sam Llanas\, formerly one of the Bodeans\, will open.
