His career began with classical violin lessons\, he soon picked up fiddling and from there it was only natural he would find himself playing along with his favorite rock tunes. Then at age 19 he was reborn with the discovery that you could play jazz on the violin. The resulting sound is swinging\, rocking\, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all\, Randy is a product of his time – someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. \n“Jazz violinists usually draw from one of two traditions. With his Chamber Blues ensemble\, he is credited with moving the blues from smokey clubs onto the classical concert stage and obliterating musical categorization in the process. \nHoward Levy is probably best known as a founding member of the GRAMMY winning group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He has recorded with a long list of greats such as Paul Simon and Dolly Parton\, as well as frequent guest appearances performing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion’s weekly National Public Radio show. \nAny audience member who attended their last rare foray together can tell you this evening is definitely one not to be missed.

SUMMARY:THE NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month\, but about once a year\, in December\, we deign to give them a weekend gig. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Or\, it could simply be that Big Bang String Thing knows how to craft a great sound. \nTHE BAND: \nBob Westfall (mandolin\, guitar\, vocals\, songwriting) has studied and worked with some of the top acoustic players in the country -Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, and Alex DeGrassi. But\, while these influences are certainly evident\, Westfall’s songwriting are uniquely his own. An award-winning mandolinist\, Bob grew up in Texas and Minnesota\, and his style incorporates the best elements of storytelling with a hybrid jazz/pop/worldbeat/bluegrass feel. \nThe husband and wife team ofMary Gaines(bass) and Chris Wagoner (violin) provide the bottom and top of the BBST sound\, and have appeared in performance and on recordings with Westfall for over fifteen years. Gaines and Wagoner have similarly diverse backgrounds — formal classical training at the Univ. of WI\, jazz studies with the great bassist\, Richard Davis\, followed by years of performing and recording with jazz\, blues\, rock\, and folk artists and songwriters. \nMicah Olsan (guitar) has been an active performer in the Midwest music scenes for the last five years. His diverse songwriting mixes elements of folky acoustic fingerstyle\, funk\, rock\, and world music into a distinct sound that will leave your head bobbing and your toes tapping. DESCRIPTION:Well\, this is embarrassing.  Hayward had contacted us about this date a long time ago\, but we just learned that he is on tour in Australia.  Don’t think he can make it for this gig.  Hope we can get the word out… \nHAYWARD WILLIAMS will be celebrating the release of his new CD The Reef\, produced by Jeffrey Foucault.  You want to be there. \nA narrative about the record: \nHayward Williams thought he was about to die in an airport. Returning home from an Australian tour\, the American singer and songwriter was tired and gaunt. As he fought his way through the terminal in San Francisco\, it seemed as though he might miss his connection home to the Midwest\, and then something started to feel very wrong. “My heart was racing\, and I was feeling nauseated and dizzy\, like I was going to pass out\,” Williams recalls. Later\, as he sat in the emergency room with an IV in his arm\, the doctors delivered their diagnosis: “Exhaustion.” What really happened to Williams will come as no surprise to anyone who’s ever had an honest to god\, clinical panic attack. What brought it on may have been nothing unusual. “I was getting married in 20 days\, and that’s a big life change. I began to realize that I was going to have to grow up\, maybe”. \nYet something both mental and physical changed within Williams at that airport. Panic metastasized into fear of panic – the self perpetuating terror that he might\, at any moment\, collapse in terror for no good reason. It crippled his stage show. “I would have to isolate myself before a show\, spend most of my time trying to hold back catastrophic thoughts”. To avoid vomiting on stage\, he started playing all his songs tuned down and at half speed\, so as not to tense his diaphragm. He recalls\, “If this is how I am now\, how can I continue to do my job\, the only thing I’m qualified to do?” He entered therapy and started a course anxiety and depression medications. They eased the panic\, but altered his creative personality\, and left the question: who are you when you’re no longer able to be your native self? \nThe slow\, doubt-stricken\, but steady process of learning how to think\, feel\, write and perform again is the backdrop of THE REEF\, Williams’ first new album since that day in the airport. “I could count back from zero / I could take off from the start / Is it just like falling in love? / Will I know my part?” he sings in the haunting title track. Other songs explore his long history with anxiety. “‘High Street’ is about how I hate being at parties and around a lot of people”\, he says of the album’s ironically raucous opener: “You know me\, I’m at your feet / Put that foot toward the door”. “It’s about how I always try to convince Kathleen [Williams’s wife] that we should leave early”. The next track takes Williams into even more vulnerable territory. “‘If I Go Under’ is a call home more or less\, saying\, ‘This is me\, this is how I’m feeling.’ I felt like I was going to drag her down with me\,” he says. The plaintive refrain asks: “If I go under\, will you go under with me?” Fans of Williams’ soulful voice won’t be surprised to hear him finally inhabiting straight-up soul territory in the new songs and arrangements\, complete with layered horn sections and call-and-response backing vocals from the sibling duo of Matt and Kate Lorenz (Rusty Belle). \nRecorded live to tape in a whirlwind two days of sessions at Sonelab Studios in western Massachusetts\, THE REEF blends a Van Morrison-esque R&B with the loose energy and charm of The Faces\, all underlined by rock-solid grooves. Produced by critically acclaimed songwriter and veteran of the Americana circuit Jeffrey Foucault\, and featuring Billy Conway (Morphine) on drums and Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T) on bass\, with Williams\, Foucault and the Lorenz siblings sharing the singing\, THE REEF is built not around leads but around the interaction of voices with rhythm and texture. “We didn’t want a lead guitar”\, Williams says. “We thought we could add one later if we really needed it. But then we realized that Matt and Kate’s voices were the lead instrument\, the thing the held each song together\, and that was more exciting”. DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Now\, sitting down at his piano delivering the distillation in its simplest form\, piano and vocal\, raw\, sometimes sweet\, sometimes rasping renditions of his material condensed over half his lifetime of diverse multidirectional\, multifaceted living and writing\, writing and living.\nWatching and listening to T.S. Also Glenn occasionally works with Matt Goodwin or David Potter on guitar\, Big Jim Johnson on vocals\, harp as well as Rodney Brown on sax.

He has made two albums with producer/ guitarist Charlie Sexton (World in a Drop of Water and Back to Oklahoma) and also collaborated with Charlie to write and record the music for the movie Monster Hunter. His 2004 album\, Pocketful of Rain featured a duet with Grammy winner Patty Griffin for whom Michael opened her Spring 2006 tour. He has toured extensively throughout the US\, Europe and Japan. His 2007 release\, Red Dog Blues went to #1 on the Americana Chart in Europe.
