SUMMARY:LAMPLIGHTER- PETER MULVEY/DAVID GOODRICH/BIRDS OF CHICAGO SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Please read LAMPLIGHTER BURNS AGAIN to learn the ins and outs of these shows. \nWe interrupt the Wednesday and Friday Redbird shows with two of its members in another stellar show\, featuring the talents of one PETER MULVEY\, one DAVID GOODRICH\, and two BIRDS OF CHICAGO. \n“Peter Mulvey is reaching for gold with his new record The Silver Ladder\, produced by Chuck Prophet.  ” \nThe eclectic range of Mulvey’s tireless past pays handsome dividends on this stylistically sweeping\, LA-recorded album. A crack specially convened band (including regular Dylan drummer David Kemper) adhere to his well-established live and direct recording approach and allow the performer’s deeply matured\, naturally wry and hard-edged Americana to attain full\, flowing life. From the raunchy melodic pop of “Sympathies” through suburban requiem “Remember the Milkman”\, the dizzying weirdness of “If You Shoot At A King” and even Led Zeppelin modal thunder on “Copenhagen Airport”\, Mulvey’s troubled visions attain striking clarity. – Gavin Martin\, Uncut \nDavis Enterprise:\n“The cream of the crop… sings with a clarity reserved for the likes of legends.” \nMojo (UK):\n“Singularly gifted.” \nBoston Globe:\n“Peter Mulvey is all substance\, which is his style.” \nBIRDS of CHICAGO is a collective based around JT Nero and Allison Russell. Whether touring as a duo (in this case) or with the full family band\, Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music. \nFor several years Russell and Nero’s respective bands\, Po’ Girl (Vancouver\, BC) and JT and the Clouds (Chicago\, IL)\, have collaborated extensively\, but on 2011’s Mountains/Forests\, released under the JT Nero banner\, they tapped into the true\, bewitching power of their voices together on an entire record. It also featured the full cast of characters that would round out the Birds of Chicago ensemble — the Clouds and Michelle McGrath\, the luminous singer and picker from the hidden hills of Southeast Ohio. \nNero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones\, is a fine thing. Not too perfect\, not at all saccharine\, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel\, street corner doo-wop\, and classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar\, it’s haunting. Fired by the band\, it’s a full tilt revival. \n“Everyone at Folk Alliance was talking about this band built around husband and wife Allison Russell and JT Nero. The acclaim was earned. Allison comes off  like  a demure young lady with a delightful Toronto accent when she speaks\, but when she sings\, she’s Aretha Franklin. They performed original music\, folk with a rock bend\, with a touch of gospel thrown in. By the end of the festival\, their shows were standing-room only\, if you could get into the room at all.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer – Mar. 2014) “The blend of the musicians’ voices is truly something to be celebrated at length. JT’s has been described as ‘fractured country-soul’ whereas Allison’s is just as soulful in its own bittersweet way; both have that slight touch of roughness too\, which makes it possible for them to draw on influences of anything from gospel to doo-wop and classic soul when singing.” (Folk and Roots; January\, 2013) \nDavid Goodrich Known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, new-wave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\, David “Goody” Goodrich continues to hone a sound all his own. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. Fans of Pat Metheny\, Bill Frisell\, and Ry Cooder will find DUST OF MANY HORSES the perfect companion.

SUMMARY:LAMPLIGHTER- PETER MULVEY/ MARK ERELLI/ BILL CAMPLIN/ RANDY SABIEN
DESCRIPTION:Back at it with the winter Lamplighter Series\, done in the half round with three to four musicians\, one of them usualbeing Peter Mulvey\, rotating songs & stories and musicianifying and magicianifying together. Please go to the LAMPLIGHTER BURNS AGAIN POST for more details. \nPeter explains it thus: \n“People\, this is the heart of what I do. I love to get musicians together and to play music in its raw\, conversational form. To listen\, to jump in without knowing exactly what comes next\, to be surprised and enlivened. This is the holy grail for me: to play music as though it’s happening offstage\, for pure joy and discovery and communication between friends and strangers. And over the past decade or so\, first in the winter at my hometown Cafe Carpe\, and then over the past three years at my home-away-from-hometown ClubPassim\, I’ve found a way to tease this kind of offstage music into an onstage situation: The Lamplighter Sessions. It changes every year\, but then\, don’t we all? Trust me\, you should get to one of these shows if you can. Lightning will strike.” \nPETER MULVEY – “master guitar wizard\, erudite song writer and just all around great guy.  The depth in any Mulvey song is incredible from the mastery of tune & rhythm\, to the lyrics\, even down to the concept of his albums”. Whitney Luckett \nSome new Lamplighter fuel tonight with MARK ERELLI.  Mark has tackled everything from western swing and protest songs to lullabies and murder ballads\, all in a richly expressive voice that Twangville.com heralds as “the male counterpart to Neko Case.” It is a journey that has taken him from church basement coffeehouses to the main stage of the Newport Folk Festival\, stopping briefly along the way to sing the national anthem at Fenway Park.  Erelli still indulges his teenage fascination with guitar solos\, though it has evolved into a career as an in-demand multi-instrumentalist sideman. These days\, fans are just as likely to find Erelli backing up Lori McKenna at the Grand Ole Opry\, or Josh Ritter at London’s Royal Albert Hall\, as they are to see a solo acoustic performance at venerable listening rooms like Harvard Square’s Club Passim.  \n“Erelli’s beautiful new thematic album\, Delivered\, is an important release…(he) articulates his topics so well and his characters are so engrossing that it is worth the emotional investment. (A) soul-stirring endeavor…” – Huffington Post.com \n“Mark Erelli made me forget that I was reviewing his new cd\, “Delivered”…it’s that good. (It’s a) Certified Desert Island Disc\, and is a must to own.”  Wildy’s World \nRANDY SABIEN is no stranger to our stage\, and no stranger than anyone else who has graced it.  He regularly steps beyond the boundaries of what many think of as jazz\, forging headlong into the worlds of rock\, blues and funk. His career began with classical violin lessons\, he soon picked up fiddling and from there it was only natural he would find himself playing along with his favorite rock tunes. Then at age 19 he was reborn with the discovery that you could play jazz on the violin. The resulting sound is swinging\, rocking\, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all\, Randy is a product of his time – someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. \n“Jazz violinists usually draw from one of two traditions. The best of both can be found in the superb Randy Sabien… he combines classical technique and folk energy in a program that’s still strictly jazz. ”  USA TODAY \nBILL CAMPLIN is no stranger to our stage or to Peter or to Randy\, who has admitted in weaker moments to enjoying accompanying Bill.  Bill is a  fine lad with a fine voice\,  but give him JimBeam instead of djembe.

SUMMARY:CORKY SIEGEL & HOWARD LEVY
DESCRIPTION:CORKY SIEGEL and HOWARD LEVY:  A Harmonica Convergence of Two Giants of Jazz and Blues \nThe contrasting musical conversations between these two giants of jazz and blues\, both who are stellar performers on harmonica and piano\, has proven to be a riveting edge-of-your-seat experience. Individuality\, uniqueness\, playfulness and adventure\, are all trademarks of both the stylings of Siegel and Levy. They draw the audience in with an intimacy to their performance in a way that only old friends of several decades – with a special connection\, can. They constantly conjole with a grand sense of humor while dazzling you with sheer jaw-dropping skill and virtuosity. They will definitely get you in the holiday spirit as they perform some seasonal classics with their own original twist. \nCorky Siegel is\, of course\, the award-winning composer who\, at a very young age\, learned his craft at the feet of such legendary first generation bluesmen as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf and as a part of Siegel-Schwall Band. With his Chamber Blues ensemble\, he is credited with moving the blues from smokey clubs onto the classical concert stage and obliterating musical categorization in the process. \nHoward Levy is probably best known as a founding member of the GRAMMY winning group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He has recorded with a long list of greats such as Paul Simon and Dolly Parton\, as well as frequent guest appearances performing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion’s weekly National Public Radio show. \nAny audience member who attended their last rare foray together can tell you this evening is definitely one not to be missed.

Lightning will strike.” \nJOSH HARTY‘s unique blend of American music has become a must-hear for those who keep the tradition of country\, blues and folk close to their hearts. Born and raised on the plains of North Dakota\, Josh has continued the old family tradition of playing guitar. His father\, both a preacher\, and the Police Chief of their small town\, was also Harty’s music mentor. \n“An honest voice and fingers that seem to catch fire!” -Atlanta Music Guide \n“There is a dignity to this music making that leaves us feeling enriched for the experience. . . “\n-No Depression \nBRIANNA LANE is a gifted singer/songwriter in true Americana form. She writes and performs on an acoustic guitar as well as a banjo\, crafting songs that are clear-eyed and pure—with an integrity derived from her gritty\, unflinching emotional honesty. \n“Her smartly written lyrics paint a portrait of a woman on the road searching for honesty and love. Her disarming voice lends those lyrics a feeling of innocent sincerity and heart. Fans of Dar Williams\, early Suzanne Vega\, the Indigo Girls and good songwriting in general will love this disk.”  Asheville Disclaimer \n“…moving rhythm\, lingering melodies & some pleasant harmonic surprises. Lovely vocals & poetic narrative. It catches me the same way as some of my favorites from Suzanne Vega\, Patty Larkin or Jonatha Brooke.”   Kevin Elliott\, From the Joshua Tree Inn \nMATT DAVIES  is currently the leader of the Thriftones\, a Milwaukee based band\, and continues to perform and record music as a band member and solo artist. “Fronted by singer Matthew Davies\, The Thriftones can best be described as folk with a generous helping of Americana roots. Davies has a real talent in crafting songs about darker ideas and images within our country\, while his band backs these concepts up with a shadowy rockabilly beat.” -A.V. Club Milwaukee

DESCRIPTION:WBack at it with the winter Lamplighter Series\, done in the half round with three to four musicians\, one of them usually being Peter Mulvey\, rotating songs & stories and musicianifying and magicianifying together. \nThis show has been recently added on a whim- Milwaukeeans just needed their own night. \nTickets can be purchased in person at the Carpe or through BROWN PAPER TICKETS- see\, right here! Lightning will strike.”\nPETER MULVEY – “master guitar wizard\, erudite song writer and just all around great guy. The depth in any Mulvey song is incredible from the mastery of tune & rhythm\, to the lyrics\, even down to the concept of his albums”. Whitney Luckett \nPAUL CEBAR Some idea of what Paul is about: “Milwaukee native Paul Cebar is a singing\, strumming\, and dancing museum of musical culture and a self-styled historian of myriad musical forms. Countless sounds pour forth when Cebar and his Milwaukeeans take the stage. New Orleans\, Chicago\, New york\, Africa\, Brazil\, Cuba\, jump-blues\, gospel\, jazz\, reggae\, calypso\, soul and vintage R&B are sterting points for something that becomes uniquely Cebar. This mishmash helps reimagine and liven up obscure classics\, and the band’s originals present new viewpoints on established styles.” The Onion AV Club \nWILLY PORTER\n“Porter plays intelligent\, groove — heavy folk with hearty abandon”\n— Santa Fe New Mexican \n“With his exquisite\, tranquil guitar work\, Willy Porter could easily astonish an audience without singing one note. His ability to engage the audience with his personality and intellect raises Porter from the level of guitar wonk into the realm of masterful performer.”\n— Earvolution \n“Willy Porter is a relaxed and fearless performer who’ll entertain you as well as move you.”\n— Acoustic Guitar Magazine\n“Porter accentuates well – rendered tales with spit – fire – percussive acoustic guitar strumming and fiery color – chord picking.”\n— Billboard \n“[Willy Porter] can captivate an audience as completely as can an entire rock band.”\n— Washington Times

SUMMARY:BIG BANG STRING THING
DESCRIPTION:BIG BANG STRING THING It’s rare when the word acoustic conjures thoughts of music that can electrify the jump in your feet. Then again\, BBST is a rare group\, and an impressive collective of musical might. Energetic\, contagious\, and flat out fun\, BBST weaves a sizzling thread through multiple genres to deliver a tapestry of award-winning original music that defies one description\,yet\, connects with everyone. Perhaps that has a something to do with the fact that BBST is made up of veteran musicians who have toured\, recorded\, or shared the stage with Leo Kottke\, The String Cheese Incident\, Lyle Lovett\, The Smashing Pumpkins\, Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, U2\, Asleep at the Wheel\, Garbage\, Willy Porter\, Riders in the Sky\, The Radiators\, David Grisman\, Alex DeGrassi\, Doc Watson\, Carrie Newcomer\, and Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band to name a few. Or\, it could simply be that Big Bang String Thing knows how to craft a great sound. \nTHE BAND: \nBob Westfall (mandolin\, guitar\, vocals\, songwriting) has studied and worked with some of the top acoustic players in the country -Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, and Alex DeGrassi. But\, while these influences are certainly evident\, Westfall’s songwriting are uniquely his own. An award-winning mandolinist\, Bob grew up in Texas and Minnesota\, and his style incorporates the best elements of storytelling with a hybrid jazz/pop/worldbeat/bluegrass feel. \nThe husband and wife team ofMary Gaines(bass) and Chris Wagoner (violin) provide the bottom and top of the BBST sound\, and have appeared in performance and on recordings with Westfall for over fifteen years. Gaines and Wagoner have similarly diverse backgrounds — formal classical training at the Univ. of WI\, jazz studies with the great bassist\, Richard Davis\, followed by years of performing and recording with jazz\, blues\, rock\, and folk artists and songwriters. \nMicah Olsan (guitar) has been an active performer in the Midwest music scenes for the last five years. His diverse songwriting mixes elements of folky acoustic fingerstyle\, funk\, rock\, and world music into a distinct sound that will leave your head bobbing and your toes tapping. His guitar work was recognized in the 2010 Shepherd Express reader poll when he was awarded runner up for best guitarist. He has been playing with BBST for the last 5 years.

SUMMARY:OPEN STAGE- (HAYWARD WILLIAMS- NOT! In Australia!)
DESCRIPTION:Well\, this is embarrassing.  Hayward had contacted us about this date a long time ago\, but we just learned that he is on tour in Australia.  Don’t think he can make it for this gig.  Hope we can get the word out… \nHAYWARD WILLIAMS will be celebrating the release of his new CD The Reef\, produced by Jeffrey Foucault.  You want to be there. \nA narrative about the record: \nHayward Williams thought he was about to die in an airport. Returning home from an Australian tour\, the American singer and songwriter was tired and gaunt. As he fought his way through the terminal in San Francisco\, it seemed as though he might miss his connection home to the Midwest\, and then something started to feel very wrong. “My heart was racing\, and I was feeling nauseated and dizzy\, like I was going to pass out\,” Williams recalls. Later\, as he sat in the emergency room with an IV in his arm\, the doctors delivered their diagnosis: “Exhaustion.” What really happened to Williams will come as no surprise to anyone who’s ever had an honest to god\, clinical panic attack. What brought it on may have been nothing unusual. “I was getting married in 20 days\, and that’s a big life change. I began to realize that I was going to have to grow up\, maybe”. \nYet something both mental and physical changed within Williams at that airport. Panic metastasized into fear of panic – the self perpetuating terror that he might\, at any moment\, collapse in terror for no good reason. It crippled his stage show. “I would have to isolate myself before a show\, spend most of my time trying to hold back catastrophic thoughts”. To avoid vomiting on stage\, he started playing all his songs tuned down and at half speed\, so as not to tense his diaphragm. He recalls\, “If this is how I am now\, how can I continue to do my job\, the only thing I’m qualified to do?” He entered therapy and started a course anxiety and depression medications. They eased the panic\, but altered his creative personality\, and left the question: who are you when you’re no longer able to be your native self? \nThe slow\, doubt-stricken\, but steady process of learning how to think\, feel\, write and perform again is the backdrop of THE REEF\, Williams’ first new album since that day in the airport. “I could count back from zero / I could take off from the start / Is it just like falling in love? / Will I know my part?” he sings in the haunting title track. Other songs explore his long history with anxiety. “‘High Street’ is about how I hate being at parties and around a lot of people”\, he says of the album’s ironically raucous opener: “You know me\, I’m at your feet / Put that foot toward the door”. “It’s about how I always try to convince Kathleen [Williams’s wife] that we should leave early”. The next track takes Williams into even more vulnerable territory. “‘If I Go Under’ is a call home more or less\, saying\, ‘This is me\, this is how I’m feeling.’ I felt like I was going to drag her down with me\,” he says. The plaintive refrain asks: “If I go under\, will you go under with me?” Fans of Williams’ soulful voice won’t be surprised to hear him finally inhabiting straight-up soul territory in the new songs and arrangements\, complete with layered horn sections and call-and-response backing vocals from the sibling duo of Matt and Kate Lorenz (Rusty Belle). \nRecorded live to tape in a whirlwind two days of sessions at Sonelab Studios in western Massachusetts\, THE REEF blends a Van Morrison-esque R&B with the loose energy and charm of The Faces\, all underlined by rock-solid grooves. Produced by critically acclaimed songwriter and veteran of the Americana circuit Jeffrey Foucault\, and featuring Billy Conway (Morphine) on drums and Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T) on bass\, with Williams\, Foucault and the Lorenz siblings sharing the singing\, THE REEF is built not around leads but around the interaction of voices with rhythm and texture. “We didn’t want a lead guitar”\, Williams says. “We thought we could add one later if we really needed it. But then we realized that Matt and Kate’s voices were the lead instrument\, the thing the held each song together\, and that was more exciting”. Live-tracked in one room\, with each song captured in the course of only a few takes\, THE REEF pulses with an electricity of feeling\, an authenticity of moment vanishingly rare in contemporary recording. At center is the naked vulnerability in every weathered crack of Williams’ voice\, cast out on the reef\, calling out.

SUMMARY:MICHAEL JOHNSON
DESCRIPTION:MICHAEL JOHNSON \nMichael Johnson has performed and lived more music and recorded more hits than you would imagine. \nHis voice immediately identifies him as the man who sings “Bluer Than Blue\,” “Give Me Wings\,” “That’s That\,” and other landmark songs. His music shows a diversity\, depth and heart that only come from years of dedication to a labor of love. \nWhen asked what he would have you know about himself\, Michael says: \n“Tell them that I love it.” He started playing at age thirteen and just never quit. Singing\, playing\, writing and recording are the only things he’s ever done and he loves it. \n“Tell them I play guitar.” He really plays guitar. He studied in Barcelona and he plays on all his records with a unique and distinctive style. His playing is an important part of his show. \n“I am a soloist at heart.” Michael often performs alone\, and he has elevated the art. He prefers the intimacy and spontaneity of a show that can change with the moment. \n“Tell them I’m a showman. I like to talk to people and I love to make them laugh. And\, of course\, I have to move them with the music. That’s the whole thing. Without that\, there is no reason to be on stage.” \nWhat one remembers of Michael is the texture of his voice\, the meaning of the lyric and the music of the guitar — singer\, song and sound. And the feeling of being at home with a friend. \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:ZOE MUTH & THE LOST HIGH ROLLERS
DESCRIPTION:ZOE MUTH \nStaffer Dennis had been playing her in the kitchen all the time\, and then we got the phone call asking if she could play here last fall. If you build it\, they will storm your kitchen.  Now she is back again. \nFirst making her name in the Pacific Northwest\, where she’s been called “Seattle’s Emmylou\,” and heralded as one of the best songwriters to come out of Washington State\, Muth has spent the last three years touring across the U.S. and Europe.  She now lives in Austin. \nWith a voice unadorned and almost conversational\, Muth makes the every day more clear and compelling: “I don’t want to die where the sleeping dogs lie\, and the silence is stronger than stone. If I have to wander\, through the lightning and the thunder\, must I always go alone?” she sings on “Somebody I Know”\, a standout duet featuring legendary Texas songwriter Bruce Robison. It’s an end of the world lament beckoning the listener to follow along: “We’ll haunt the hidden places\, like the embers in the afterglow.” \nWorld of Strangers\, her newest album\,  is slow building and spacious\, often dream-like and fearless in its demand of your time and attention. Muth has taken risks for the sake of the song\, asking the listener to let go of expectations. And while the album sometimes begs you to two-step and waltz\, more often than not\, what it wants is for you to turn up the volume\, turn the lights down low and just listen. \nPraise for 2012’s Old Gold: \n“Muth sings like a lost lamented Carter sister . . .Her decidedly un-Joplin-esque take on ‘Get It While You Can’ is an inspired highlight.”\n-Vintage Guitar Magazine \nPraise for 2012’s Starlight Hotel: \n“With a haunting voice that treads soul and country and can only be described as a cosmic americana\, Zoe Muth delivers songs that sound like vintage country classics.”\n– Twangville \n“We rarely talk about country music as being “soulful” or having “soul”\, but thank god Zoe Muth is here to change this…the gentle truth of her songwriting and the softness of her voice lend a weight to the music that gives Starlight Hotel\, a true feeling of soulfulness… an astonishingly good songwriter.”\n– No Depression \n“Muth has gifted the world with a collection of music that is straight no chaser . . .Just when you start to believe that they just don’t make ’em the way they used to\, Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers come along to restore your faith.”\n– Country Standard Time \n“It’s clear\, unforced passion\, “not for the jet set\, but the old Chevrolet set\,” that informs all of these songs\, along with a high\, pure voice that rises to Iris Dement and Patty Griffin territory…There isn’t a bad song on this album…honky-tonk comes so naturally to the young Muth\, along with a charming drawl…”\n– The Billings Gazette \n‘Starlight Hotel is one of those albums that you need if your first exposures to country music came from the static-y radio in the cab of your dad’s old pickup truck… essential listening.’\n– ninebullets.net

SUMMARY:CHANCE presents- "University of the Wilderness" walk with John Muir
DESCRIPTION:“CHANCE” invites you to take a walk in the woods with the words of John Muir. A musical landscape surrounds you\, excites you to follow around the next bend\, and delivers you to a deep appreciation for one of our country’s most influential naturalists. Celebrate the man in this\, the centennial year of his passing.  Remember to call to reserve for this special event. \nThis from their website:\n“Composer/Performers CHERYL LEAH & ED WILLETT aka CHANCE) have been collaborating with actor/musician Thomas Clyde Mitchell since 1994. From ’94 to 2011 the three were an integral part of the summer music festival and touring company\, Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua\, a company that specializes in the wedding of music\, history\, and theater. In their time with the festival they played pivotal roles in the production of 5 albums\, 3 PBS specials\, and over 300 performances. In 2011 they joined forces with bassist Jane Aleckson who immediately became the heart\, funk\, and soul of the group\, and with her in the engine room\, continue to blaze their own trail bringing an incredible breadth of musical insight and experience to their offering to John Muir. \nWith Muir’s own writings providing the unifying thread\, their transformative production embraces the long standing tradition of bringing the inspiration of the natural world to the concert hall. \nIn “University of the Wilderness”\, Muir’s words are celebrated\, reflected upon\, and reinforced by an accompanying score of nature-forged new music. The score is the creation of Leah and Willett and is deftly performed by the “Chance” quartet which is comprised of cello\, voice\, bass and percussion. They describe the show’s musical landscape as a place where contemporary\, classical\, and celtic music beautifully collide. \nActor Thomas Clyde Mitchell\, the production’s purveyor of Muir’s words\, takes us on a journey from Muir’s childhood in Scotland to his young life in Wisconsin and finally to his profound and influential experiences in the great Sierra Nevada Mountains. What is revealed are the undercurrents and influences that helped create one of the world’s great naturalists and forged his legacy that lives on in his Sierra Club\, and in his role in history as the father of our national park system. \nIn creating the program\, we kept as our guide the goal of reflecting the multi-dimensional nature of Muir\, his indomitable spirit\, his daring and adventurous nature\, the beauty and the humor of the man. We determined that we would do this in accordance with our own “off the trail” philosophy that has guided us throughout our careers and tell this story by means of the “road less traveled”. This is not a historical account\, but rather a performance that portrays a philosophical landscape aimed at inspiring all of us to revivify that part in ourselves that shares a kinship with Muir.\nWhen many of us read his works we feel that he is articulating (in a manner more beautiful than we can) the very love we feel for the natural world. He was and is a charismatic figure who inspires us to try as best we can to live up to his example. I know from experience that this show leaves the audience with a desire to rekindle their relationship with his words and to resume (or continue or begin for the first time) following in his footsteps. \n

SUMMARY:CLAUDIA RUSSELL & BRUCE KAPLAN with Katie Dahl
DESCRIPTION:CLAUDIA RUSSELL is an outstanding singer and songwriter who has shared stages with Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer\, Loudon Wainwright III\, Steve Forbert\, Tish Hinojosa\, Kris Kristoffersen\, Willie Nelson\, Darryl Purpose\, Peter Rowan\, Rosalie Sorrels and Bill Staines\, among many others. She is accompanied by husband BRUCE KAPLAN on mandolin. guitar and vocals. \nBesides writing evocative songs\, Claudia is known for her vocal talent. She is an expressive and versatile singer\, as at home on a soulful ballad as a Buddy Holly style romp. \nWith its memorable melodies and seductive soundscape\, her new album\, All Our Luck Is Changing\, elicits the classic era of ageless American music. Russell delivers a whimsical melting pot of traditional and contemporary styles\, from earnest folk to sweet jug band blues\, driven by her deft guitar work and a versatile\, expressive voice that tips the hat to artists as diverse as Dolly Parton\, Suzanne Vega and Aretha Franklin. Claudia paints her material with emotional depth\, looking forward and back at life with both childlike awe and the mature wisdom of a musician with four decades of music under her belt. \nWorking with three-time Grammy nominee producer Peter Case\, Claudia and her husband Bruce Kaplan (guitar\, mandolin) cut the majority of the record live with some of LA’s best musicians. Using just a few overdubs\, Case created a balance between the immediacy of a live record and the freedom to embellish that the studio experience inspires. \nThough they might not carry the trappings of the usual music industry formula for overnight success\, self-described ‘late bloomers’ Russell and Kaplan have refined their sound into an eclectic\, full-bodied tapestry of unplugged Americana. Giving themselves the time and space to come into their own as people and musicians has allowed for the creation of their definitive album. The duo have dealt themselves a winning hand. Indeed\, all you have to do is listen and you too will believe!  All Their Luck Is Changing! \nKATIE DAHL Wisconsin singer-songwriter Katie has performed her original songs everywhere from the dusty cliff country of Mali\, West Africa\, to the winding canals of southern France\, to the cedar forests of the American northwoods. The depth and power of Katie’s alto voice\, the literate candor of her original songs\, and the easy humor of her live performances have earned her numerous songwriting awards\, as well as the chance to share stages with such luminaries as Dar Williams\, Peter Mulvey\, Julie Gold\, and Cheryl Wheeler. Katie is also a playwright whose musical Victory Farm premiered to high acclaim in 2012 and has since been made into a live cast album.

SUMMARY:DAYNA KURTZ
DESCRIPTION:DAYNA may amaze you as she has others. \n“From Ray Charles and Tom Waits to Nina Simone and Prince\, the Brooklyn-born singer and songwriter finds inspiration in almost every type of genre. Kurtz’s own music is hard to categorize\, and her rich and smoky alto can easily switch from a sensual croon to a blues howl.” \nOver the past decade\, the New Jersey born (turns out she wasn’t Brooklyn born)\, now New Orleans resident vocalist/ writer/ musician/ producer has been bestowed with many awards and praises\, including being named the Female Songwriter of the Year by the National Academy of Songwriters. Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt have raved about her in interviews\, and she’s performed on such high-profile radio shows as World Cafe\, Mountain Stage and NPR’s Morning Edition and Tell Me More. \nShe’s toured with the likes of Elvis Costello\, Richard Thompson\, Mavis Staples\, Rufus Wainwright\, B.B. King\, Dr. John\, Richie Havens\, Keren Ann\, Chris Whitley\, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. \nShe’s still building an audience at home\, but Kurtz has already gained widespread acclaim from fans and critics in Europe with her 2002 debut\, Postcards from Downtown — a top seller in Holland. \nDo not get Bill or Paul Cebar started about the wonders of Dayna’s talent unless you have a lot of spare time.

SUMMARY:SPOOK HANDY "Remembering Pete Seeger"
DESCRIPTION:Spook Handy performed alongside Pete Seeger at festivals and concerts over 50 times from 2003 – 2014 learning many of Pete’s songs and the stories behind them. Now\, Spook is touring throughout the U.S and Canada (and soon Europe and Australia) sharing these songs and stories at theaters\, arts centers\, libraries\, universities\, churches and anywhere else people gather to celebrate Pete’s life and legacy. \nSays Spook: \n“Every citizen of this planet needs to know about Pete. Pete was a one-of-a-kind citizen of the world who loved humanity and worked with others to respect\, save and rehabilitate the environment. He is an important historical figure who embodied the ideals that are ascribed to the founding of the United States. He is also well known for his work in the civil rights movement\, the folk revival and so many other arenas. And it is important that we who knew Pete learn\, share\, carry on and pass along his music\, message and legacy to as many people as possible. I am passionate about being one of the many folk artists who will help make this happen. \nPete taught me to always know the first song or two you are going play at a concert. After that\, you should have a good feel for what the audience appreciates and you tailor the rest of your set to that. Whether the thread turns out to follow the chronology of Pete’s life\, trace the wisdom he collected over the years and embedded into his songs or the express values of community\, environment\, peace and justice he lived\, every concert is chock full of songs everyone can sing: old classics\, newer songs written late in his life\, songs others wrote that he popularized and songs I have written or revised under Pete’s tutelage. You’ll also hear some of the stories behind the songs as they were told to me by Pete.” \n

SUMMARY:HAYNIE & SAMUEL
DESCRIPTION:DON HAYNIE & SHERYL SAMUEL \nDon and Sheryl have learned to combine upbeat\, sometimes drivingly energetic songs with wistful\, thoughtful ballads\, for performances with grit as well as grace. Don’s songs can make you laugh\, cry\, or dance as he ranges in topic from the absurdities of modern life (Chaplain of the Mall) to the poignance of family (My Grandmother’s Piano) to the mysteries of mortality (When I Cross the Great Divide). Their excellent individual voices combine in well thought-out arrangements to sound sometimes like one incredible voice\, and sometimes like more than two. \nTheir instrumentation– Sheryl’s use of percussion interwoven with Don’s six- and twelve-string guitars– gives their music a rhythmic drive rarely found in contemporary acoustic music: sometimes working as a compelling rhythm section supporting the vocal melodies and harmonies\, sometimes lending a delicate accent\, and often touching their music with a world beat flavor\, through the use of percussion instruments from many cultures. Their early years performing in the bars and taverns of New York and New England helped to give their music a strength not often found in singer/songwriter acts– you just can’t sing a lot of self-involved nonsense in clubs like that\, not unless you can give it a great beat\, and some energy and humor. Don and Sheryl have learned to combine upbeat\, sometimes drivingly energetic songs with wistful\, thoughtful ballads\, for performances with grit as well as grace. \nAs innovative and refreshing as this duet’s instrumentation is\, it is there mostly to support the real heart of their music\, the songs themselves\, and Don and Sheryl’s unique\, powerful vocal harmonies. Their songs and arrangements may be the result of studying their craft (and a healthy dose of inspiration) but their vocal blend is one of those acts of nature or magic that can never really be crafted\, or duplicated\, only appreciated. And it’s this unique vocal quality\, along with great songs and arrangements\, that puts them on a level with the best. \n
