DESCRIPTION:Kaia‘s reemergence as a performing artist in 2008 led to the release of her solo CD\, Seams of My Heart in 2010. Since then\, Kaia has expanded into the Madison area and beyond performing regularly and selling her CD at shows and online. \nThe recording project enabled Kaia to work with outstanding musicians including Randy Sabien\, who brought his violin and mandolin wizardry to the album\, and Sam Steffke whose keyboard skills adorn the jazzy song “Let Him Be.” Local dobro master Paul Bast also appears on three songs on the album.  \nFollowing the release of Seams of My Heart\, Kaia was invited to play her song “Who Are You?” as a guest at Michelle Shocked’s concert in Madison\, September of 2010. Encouraged by Shocked\, who wrote “Thanks for sharing your voice and talent with my audience\, Kaia. What a beautiful song!”  \nKaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical metaphors\, intense melodies and experimental chord use. Her voice\, while distinct\, has subtle similarities to Natalie Merchant\, being similarly supple\, strong and alluring. Other influences have included Carole King\, the Indigo Girls\, Carrie Newcomer\, Sarah McClachlan\, Patty Griffin and Paul Simon. \nSeams of My Heart earned a glowing review from the Americana Gazette and airplay on the Women of Substance online radio station. Andy Ziehli of The Americana Gazette says of Kaia’s songs\, “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. DESCRIPTION:Kelly Joe Phelps \nA writer at the San Diego Troubadour described guitarist and songwriter Kelly Joe Phelps as\, “The Phantom Monk Of Folk- Blues\,” and rightly so. Over the past 17 years of recording and touring\, Phelps has been talked about as much for his passionate\, spirit-driven\, lone musical ways as for the inventiveness of his playing and singing. A New York Times concert reviewer wrote: “…his airy playing conjuring a pocket of supernatural space. He manipulated his fretboard to create eerie harmonics as he slipped from a mumble to a falsetto\, as if to follow the soul beyond the physical realm.” Uncut magazine\, reviewing a London show\, wrote: “…to ripple and snake into unknown territory for the country blues he allegedly played\, to squeeze out sounds touching the searching jazz that had once been his trade\, to mutate through more layers than twelve strings should hold. And the songs – their pleas for mercy beyond the grave healed the spirit in ways disbelievers\, in bibles or blues\, could feel.” \nKelly Joe is an improviser within the world of folk music. He’ll likely use the same group of songs during one show that he used the previous night\, sure enough\, but the skew will have changed\, the colors and shading moved around. Sometimes\, it seems like the song might even be playing him\, rather than the other way around. “I approach music this way\,” he says\, “to give it a chance to breathe\, walk\, or whisper. Improvising\, even in small amounts\, turns a piece of music into a conversation\, in real time\, with all of the unexpected twists and turns that any conversation is going to have\, even if it’s with someone you talk to all the time. The emotional complexity of us\, in any one moment\, can be musically represented through improvisation as a moment in motion\, like someone thinking\, or worrying\, perhaps\, right this second\, here and now. If there isn’t some part of the unknown or unexpected present\, it seems like an important aspect of being human goes missing. That’s the beauty of spontaneity\, even in the supposed confines of folk music. It allows a character\, a note\, or a chord some time to be alive\, to look for themselves…if I’m doing my job well\, that is.” \nPhelps refers to himself as a folk musician. He deems the folk music story as one continually being written\, and its ultimate definition in fluid motion. “There’s still a lot of work for us musicians to do\,” he considers\, “and a lot more music to find. We have to keep our eyes and ears open\, and keep moving forward\, and continue to learn.” The culture website PopMatters\, reviewing Kelly’s CD ‘Western Bell’\, figured he had work to do as well\, but clearly as the Phantom Monk: “When a listener resigns him or herself to intently listening to Kelly’s lone guitar\, fighting back the darkness one plunk at a time\, an odd sort of poetry arises: like a hero of the high plains\, roaming nameless to wherever God deems his services necessary\, Phelps speaks directly to your soul. DESCRIPTION:This five piece outfit featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin do a once-a-month performance here\, usually the 2nd Thursday. But this is the third Thursday. It’s the Ides of March\, beware already. \nIts various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. (Jerry Wisentowski will be gone until March recovering from surgery.)  Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer.  As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine.

DESCRIPTION:The Zombies will do a regular (as regular as anything gets for the Carpe or the Zombies) 3rd Thursday of each month gig here. That wasn’t available\, but this Friday was. \nPlaying music that would make the Lorine Niedecker Poetry Foundation start mumbling verses of Virgil\,  Los Zombies keep it high and keep it getting higher* . Then when it seems really high they go even more higherer. After a brief stint as a military entertainment band touring Afghanistan and other even more top secreter regions the “Zombies” moved to Ixonia and began assembling a crackerjack team of future-musician-warriors with tactics that could blow up any stage (using zen and other non-western mystical sounding techniques\, like haiku\, for example).  They then set their sites on THE CARPE.  A frothy bunch of anti-war peaceniks\, well-meaning environmentalists\, and probably vegetarians–the locals at The Carpe were (and are) more than this lurid\, deep thinking bunch of hawks could endure\, and to boot\, right in the aorta of the heartland. So re-boot Los Zombies 6.0 and check out this unusually artful and extremely glamorous parade of good taste and high born contempt for the working man and all he stands for\, or makes\, or whatever. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. (Jerry Wisentowski will be gone until March recovering from surgery.)  Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer.  As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine.

Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer.  As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine.
