SUMMARY:CRAIG CARDIFF
DESCRIPTION:CRAIG CARDIFF – one of those Canadians \nArmed with an extensive catalogue of songs\, his Book of Truths\, sharp wit and soft voice\, Cardiff is considered a pioneer in alternate venue touring\, often appearing in churches\, camps\, prisons\, basements\, festivals\, kitchens and even taking to the streets\, bringing his fans with him. \nWith a voice described as “warm\, scratched\, sad and sleepy\,” Cardiff sings songs that expose the human condition\, putting a magnifying glass to the clumsier and less proud moments. He can turn any setting into an intimate affair\, infusing his music and lyrics with an uncompromising humanism. \n“From the majestic loops of The Very Last Night Of The End Of The World to the feel-good caress of Safe Here\, the cello-enhanced lullaby Gate and a sprinkling of starting-over songs\, it’s a gorgeous album that seems to find a balance between heartbreak and joy. Listening to Cardiff’s gentle\, expressive voice\, you can imagine that Paul Simon is whispering in one ear and Van Morrison in the other.” Lynn Saxberg\, Ottawa Citizen \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:WHISKEY BELLES
DESCRIPTION:The WHISKEY BELLES –Roots Country Music\, Born of Gin Halls and Juke Joints –\nHank Williams passion\, Carter family harmonies\, with a little Hee Haw mixed in for good measure. \nThe WhiskeyBelles are an all-female traditional country and Americana trio based out of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. The Belles are widely known for captivating shows featuring their own take on classic and obscure vintage-country\, Americana\, folk-revival and roots-country tunes\, with their witty originals sprinkled in. They’ve been compared with the Pistol Annies\, Dixie Chicks and The Trio (Dolly Parton\, Emmy Lou Harris & Linda Ronstadt). The WhiskeyBelles have personalities as big as the Texan skyline – they have a great time on stage\, and love to share the fun with their audience. \nThe ‘Belles started their musical shenanigans in May of 2011 and by July of the following year they released their independent debut album\, “Whiskey Woman\,” which was named one of the 10 best local albums of 2012 by Milwaukee Magazine. \nThey released their second album on November 30th\, 2013. This release is a raucous Christmas album aptly titled\, “Nothin’ Says Christmas Like Whiskey”. \nBoth of their studio albums have received wide-spread radio play across the U.S. and as far away as France and The Netherlands. The title track from their debut album\, Whiskey Woman\, recently climbed to #8 on the monthly Freeform American Roots Chart (FAR). The chart is assembled of reports from 130 radio stations world wide. FAR is compiled by John Conquest for 3rd Coast Music Magazine\, the essential eNewspaper for American Roots music. \nThen in June\, 2015 they released their third CD\, a live album titled Tales from the Bootleggers’ Ball. A fun-filled\, larger than life album that gives the listener a taste of what it’s like to hear the WhiskeyBelles in their element\, performing live. \nBesides starting a new studio album\, the WhiskeyBelles have kept a busy schedule performing over 65+ shows a year. \nThey have also won the WAMI award for Americana/Bluegrass Artist of the Year as well as the coveted People’s Choice Award and have opened for country stars such as Montgomery Gentry\, The Lost Trailers\, The Kentucky Headhunters and Cadillac Three. \n“One band that makes their performance look like more fun than legally allowed is the Whiskeybelles. Blessed with decent chops\, excellent harmonies and outstanding camaraderie and charisma the Whiskeybelles delight audiences every night out.”\n– Paddy Fineran – Scene262.com \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:SACRED WATERS SACRED LAND-33 days on Twin #66- Walking the Enbridge Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:Beginning June 8th and ending on July 10th  a group will walk the Enbridge Pipeline in approximately 20 miles increments from Walworth to Superior.  They are stopping to give in Fort Atkinson and will give a presentation on the pipeline. \nCheck out their Facebook page. \n“Our walk along the Enbridge crude and tar sands pipeline system is to raise awareness about the proposed “Twin” line #66. This new line will follow the existing aging pipeline series\, already transporting millions of barrels of toxic crude through the heart of the state daily\, and intends to increase flow-through to a staggering 3+ million barrels a day\, a volume triple that of Keystone XL! \nThe expansion of the line requires an additional 200″ right-of-way easement which Enbridge will try to buy or cheat people out of using eminent domain\, increasing our potential expose to dangerous\, cancer-causing tar sands dilbit and bitumen solvents at even greater levels than they already are. \nAt various revival locations along the route\, we will educate and support not only the landowners directly affected by the expansion\, but also the people of Wisconsin as a whole. The solution is not just in stopping this expansion as we fight for our houses\, communities and natural areas\, but also in empowering citizens to seek out new ways to reduce our use and dependency on fossil fuels and turn us to a renewable energy future\, the ultimate solution. \nThe culmination of the 33 Days on Twin#66 will be a celebration of Renewable Energy Independence Day on July 10th in Superior. You can participate in the walk itself\, or as support volunteers along the route or even in your daily routine by taking the Virtual Walk and raising money for our cause.” \nA virtual version of the walk has been set up so you can participate and show your solidarity with the walkers by logging the miles you put on as you go about your daily routine. One member has been walking virtually on his iPhone using the preinstalled Health app which is linked directly to his My Mission app and his progress is updated automatically. Easy to join and show your support. http://www.myvirtualmission.com/missions/13096/33-days-on-twin-66?event=223759

SUMMARY:PIPER ROAD
DESCRIPTION:PIPER ROAD is: \nRandal Harrison – Fiddle\nBob Mason – Mandolin\nMark Hembree — Bass\nBarry Riese — Guitar – Vocals\nBill Kangaroo — Washboard \nPiper Road was born into the age of rock & roll with individual backgrounds diverse as classical\, cowboy\, folk\, blues and Dixieland. They never completely abandoned their musical roots and have blended Irish fiddle tunes with American country\, big band\, novelty and space-aged Grateful Dead inspired jams. \nThe band continues to swing! With their strong bond of friendship\, commitment to quality musicianship and continuing support of a strong fan base\, Piper Road invites you to join them as their show hits the road. The current Piper Road roster has accumulated over 100 years of experience performing together.

SUMMARY:SAM LLANAS solo
DESCRIPTION:Grab the chance to hear the distinctive voice and talent of Sam Llanas in a solo performance. \nSAM LLANAS (formerly of the BoDeans) is an iconic American singer\, acoustic guitarist\, and songwriter. Sam is best known for his unique and distinctively soulful voice.  It was Llanas’ voice that supplied the trademark vocal on Robbie Robertson’s “Somewhere Down the Crazy River.” \nIn 1997 Llanas founded the band Absinthe. As Absinthe Sam released one album\, 1998’s critically acclaimed A Good Day To Die. In 2011 Sam Llanas left the BoDeans and released 4 A.M. (The Way Home) on Inner Knot Records. In 2013 he released the live retrospective 4/5 Live – Vol I. \nIn 2012 the music from 1998‘s A Good Day To Die was incorporated into a collaboration with playwright Doug Vincent and producer Gary Tanin in the production “A Day for Grace.” By 2013 the play had evolved to include multi-city tours and multi-week runs in New York City. \nOn November 18th\, 2014 Llanas released The Whole Night Thru\, an all new studio record produced by longtime collaborator Gary Tanin. It features 9 new Llanas originals. The Whole Night Thru is Llanas’ first studio outing after parting ways with the band he co-fronted for over a quarter century. Shedding new light on a multi-decade career Sam returns to his roots adding a refined rock sound complimented by a full band\, all veterans of both studio and live performance. Behind his lone-wolf image and toughness\, Llanas continues to hone his skills. A master craftsman that feels most at home in the city he’s always called home\, Llanas has set the stage for fans to embrace his new identity. \nDo call to reserve. 920-563-9391

SUMMARY:BRIARPICKERS w/ STARR MOSS
DESCRIPTION:The BriarPickers  BRIAN RAY & PAUL KIENITZ \nTake a “Monroe style” mandolin player\, with a gravely voice\, add a fiddle player obsessed with Kenny Baker\, and apply that to a guitarist with a slightly modern bent\, and you’d have The Briarpickers. This Madison-based trio (or quartet with bass) features Brian Ray\, Paul Kienitz\, and Starr Moss. They play a compelling blend of traditional Appalachian bluegrass\, and old-time music\, with just a pinch of the contemporary. The perfect compliment for a relaxed pub or dining atmosphere\, as well as wedding ceremonies and cocktail sets. \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:PAUL CEBAR/ PETER MULVEY/ BILL CAMPLIN/ new addition! CARSIE BLANTON
DESCRIPTION:Click on BUY TICKETS to buy tickets.  Carpe will open at 5:30 this evening.\n \nThis show has been added because all these fabulous people were still available to play and the other shows sold out. She happens to be a different gender from the other people on the stage. \nA live-wire on any stage\, PETER MULVEY is an acoustic singer/songwriter/guitarist who\, in fact\, defies this categorization. His ferocious guitar playing whisks him through more tunings than he has fingers in the course of an evening\, as he winds his way from full-throated rockers to deceptively plain-spoken musings. \nBILL CAMPLIN has been an integral part of the Wisconsin acoustic music scene for many years both as a performer and as co-owner of the Cafe Carpe. She paints a vivid landscape with lyrics that are deceptively conversational and at the same time surprisingly perceptive for a relatively new artist. I’m really happy to know that classic songwriting is in good hands with Carsie Blanton.”  John Oates (of Hall & Oates) \n“Carsie’s lyrics are an iron fist in the velvet glove of her voice.”  Peter Mulvey

SUMMARY:JACK WILLIAMS
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a long time since JACK WILLIAMS played here\, but as indicated below\, it will be a pleasure to have him share his talents again. \nMusic legends Peter Yarrow (Peter\, Paul\, & Mary) and Tom Paxton lauded Williams as ‘the best guitar player I’ve ever heard’ and ‘one of my (Paxton) all-time favorite pickers.’ It is no cliché’ to say that his music defies genre labeling\, as his style has evolved from a lifetime of musical involvement ranging from beatnik trumpeter and folk revivalist banjo player to country\, rock and R & B electric and steel-guitar player and chamber music composer. \nWilliams spends the majority of his time touring the US\, playing major music festivals and venues\, which have included The Newport Folk Festival and Chicago’s Folkstage\, hosted by Rich Warren of NPR’s nationally syndicated show\, ‘The Midnight Special.’ \nOf him\, Warren says\, “his artistry… is nothing short of amazing. Dazzling picking\, expressive voice\, unique and interesting songs. He is a showman in the best sense of the word and just wowed our audience. I think they would have followed him anywhere.” From a recent performance at a popular Birmingham concert venue\, Moonlight on the Mountain\, proprietor Keith Harrelson said\, “Jack is a fearless singer\, inventive storyteller\, forceful-yet-delicate guitarist\, and holds near-legendary status as a modern-times troubadour…. precisely what kept him relevant to at least three generations of loyal fans.” \nThough sometimes thought of as a ‘singer-songwriter’\, audiences should not expect a night of quiet introspective ballads. Williams is known for his entertaining and high energy performances. He often concludes his shows with a unique finale\, a medley of songs and stories that span the varied styles and voices of his musical past\, keeping audiences enthralled from start to finish. \n“An adept acoustic guitarist and extremely capable in the vocal and songwriting departments…. Difficult to categorize\, Williams blends folk\, country\, jazz\, and blues in a somewhat gentler Ry Cooder manner…. It would be hard to value one album over the other; both are of high caliber… Possessing a clear tenor\,Williams showcases his fluid fingerpicking style on both discs… both albums are treats for the listener.  Jack Williams comprehends the potency of understatement and inhabits a world that may be less realistic but certainly kinder.” Pieter Hofmann\, DIRTY LINEN \n“…an American Treasure” – Mickey Newbury \n“…one of the strongest guitar players in contemporary folk.”  – Sing Out! \nIf there is anyone not familiar with Jack’s incredible songwriting and prodigious performance skills\, my sympathies to you. A Jack Williams show is a slam-dunk win-win-win for all. One of the most enlightened and entertaining performers I’ve ever encountered. – Dave Humpreys\, Two Way Street Coffeehouse in Downers Grove IL \n“…like a South Carolina version of an acoustic Bruce Springsteen with Jerry Garcia on acoustic lead guitar.”\nMike Agranoff – Folk Project and Minstrel Coffeehouse\, Morristown NJ \n“Jack Williams is one of the most eclectic singer songwriters going. You can hear both the white and black musical traditions in his writing. You can hear country\, you can hear blues\, you can hear jazz. He’s a poet who knows how to write simply. And he’s a remarkable\, magical performer\, with graceful good humor\, and a hot guitar style.”\n– Phil Shapiro\, host\, WVBR’s “Bound for Glory” \n*****Please call to reserve.

SUMMARY:BILL STAINES
DESCRIPTION:Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. \nSinging mostly his own songs\, he has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today\, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65\,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances and one reviewer wrote\, “He has a sense of timing to match the best standup comic.” \nBill’s music is a slice of Americana\, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon\, the on-the-road truckers\, or the everyday workers that make up this land. \nMany of Bill’s songs have appeared in grade school music books\, church hymnals\, and scouting campfire songbooks; he is one of only a few songwriters to have eight songs published in the classic song collection\, Rise up Singing. Composer David Amram recently described Bill as “a modern day Stephen Foster…his songs will be around 100 years from now.” \nOver the decades\, you have heard Bill singing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion\, HBO’s award winning series Deadwood\, and Public Radio’s Mountain Stage. Additionally\, his music has been used in a number of films including Off and Running\, with Cyndi Lauper\, and The Return of the Secaucus Seven\, John Sayles’ debut as a writer- director. \nIn 1975\, Bill won National Yodeling Championship in Kerrville Texas. Another important recognition was given to him in 2007. Presented by the Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, The Jerry Christen Award recognized Bill’s contribution to New England folk music. \nCurrently\, Bill has recorded 26 albums; The Happy Wanderer and One More River were winners of the prestigious Parents’ Choice Award\, taking a gold medal and silver medal respectively. His songs have been recorded by many artists including Peter\, Paul\, and Mary\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, The Highwaymen\, Mason Williams\, Grandpa Jones\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, Nanci Griffith\, Glen Yarborough and others. \n“Folk music is rich in the human spirit and experience. I’ve always wanted to bring something of value to people through my songs.” With these thoughts\, Bill continues to drive the highways and back roads of the country year after year\, bringing his music to listeners\, young and old. \n“Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody left off-carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.” – Nanci Griffith\n“Staines is one of the best songwriters in folk music today\, penning lyrics that evoke a sense of place and a generous spirit to go along with his pretty melodies. – Associated Press\n“Staines is one of folk music’s best songwriters and entertainers.” – Milwaukee Journal\n“There is no better writer of instantly memorable singalong choruses in this genre of music!” – The Boston Globe\n“His gentle lilting voice\, spacious melodies and common-chord lyrics give his songs a homespun grace that often belies his mastery of the folk form. He is such a pure pleasure too\, people forget to notice how damn good at the job of singer-songwritering he really is.” – New England Folk Almanac\n“Folk singer Bill Staines’ compositions recall the paintings of Grandma Moses – simple\, literal and evocative of a bucolic tranquility that modern times have almost erased.” – Hartford Courant \nPLEASE CALL TO RESERVE.

SUMMARY:HOWARD LEVY & CORKY SIEGEL- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION: Leave a note at the Discussion section at this link expressing your interest in tickets should any become available. \nCORKY SIEGEL and HOWARD LEVY:  A Harmonica Convergence of Two Giants of Jazz and Blues \nThe contrasting musical conversations between these two giants of jazz and blues\, both who are stellar performers on harmonica and piano\, has proven to be a riveting edge-of-your-seat experience. Individuality\, uniqueness\, playfulness and adventure\, are all trademarks of both the stylings of Siegel and Levy. They draw the audience in with an intimacy to their performance in a way that only old friends of several decades – with a special connection\, can. They constantly conjole with a grand sense of humor while dazzling you with sheer jaw-dropping skill and virtuosity. \nCorky Siegel is\, of course\, the award-winning composer who\, at a very young age\, learned his craft at the feet of such legendary first generation bluesmen as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf and as a part of Siegel-Schwall Band. With his Chamber Blues ensemble\, he is credited with moving the blues from smokey clubs onto the classical concert stage and obliterating musical categorization in the process. \nHoward Levy is probably best known as a founding member of the GRAMMY winning group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He has recorded with a long list of greats such as Paul Simon and Dolly Parton\, as well as frequent guest appearances performing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion’s weekly National Public Radio show. \nAny audience member who attended their last rare foray together can tell you this evening is definitely one not to be missed.

SUMMARY:A ROSE AMONG THORNS
DESCRIPTION:Fort Atkinson’s own Perry Baird\, Tom Cook (TC) and Jeff Mason will be joined again by Fort violinist Erica Flyte on a number of songs. Perry and Tom are officially retired from their former day jobs\, and Jeff is about half-way there. They are all getting a little long in the tooth and slow off the couch\, but their fingers are almost as nimble as ever. The boys will wind their way through traditional folk and fiddle tunes (this time with Erica actually providing fiddle) and whatever else they can remember. Perry and Jeff play guitar(s) and Perry does most of the singing. TC seems to be bringing a collection of (mostly) four and eight-stringed wooden instruments and will be making his second sojourn onto the Carpe stage\, with some tasty instrumentals promised. Quite honestly\, the whole thing is a work-in-progress and the old geezers are just as anxious as anyone else to hear what happens\, particularly with the addition of Erica’s sweet violin to the mix. \nThey’ll wind their way through a mix of contemporary and traditional folk\, pop\, and blues tunes\, plus a few novelties of highly suspect origin. \nPlease call to reserve at 920-563-9391.

SUMMARY:SIMON BALTO/ WHITNEY MANN
DESCRIPTION:Most people mention the voice first. It comes from deep within. Sounds like it means what it says. Then come the lyrics and the stories — ones about workers and lovers\, mothers and sons\, the dying and mourning\, the prideful and the abused. Ones about the Midwest and the beauty and difficulty that characterizes life around here. There is a humanity in the songs that recalls the work of some of the folk tradition’s finest architects.\nThe songs linger. Exhale. Persist. \nSIMON BALTO‘s work has garnered praise from critics both local\, regional\, national\, and international. The Irish music publication Deadly Music! has compared his songwriting to top-of-his-game\, Blood on the Tracks-era Dylan. The Chicago-based music curator Music Means Family said the following: “An unbelievable talent\, his layered folk ballads are reminiscent of Baez and Dylan\, Guthrie and Prine. There is a deeply satisfying componentto each of his songs – a reminder of home\, woodsmoke\, and the first traces of your breath as winter begins to settle.” \nHe has been featured on Wisconsin Public Television\, Wisconsin Public Radio\, Big Top Chautauqua’s Tent Show Radio\, Daytrotter\, and has supported and shared stages with a wide range of artists in recent years\, from Jason Isbell to Johnnyswim\, Field Report to Anderson East\, Peter Mulvey to Communist Daughter\, Charlie Parr to Horseshoes & Hand Grenades. \nIn 2016\, he will release Murmurations\, a full-band record that features Shane Leonard (Kalispell\, Field Report)\, Ben Lester (S. Carey\, The Tallest Man on Earth\, Aero Flynn)\, Steven Hobert\, Kevin Rowe (Buffalo Gospel)\, and Amanda Rigell (Count This Penny). \nJoining Simon for the evening will be Madison singer-songwriter WHITNEY MANN. “Whitney Mann is the best kept secret in Wisconsin. She’s raw\, she’s real. Whitney sings and writes from the heart\, you can’t ask for more than that in a musician.”\n– John T Selman\, Production Manager\, Willie Nelson and Family   Whitney Mann is an old soul with a child’s glow. Her story is only beginning. It’s the story of a poetic farm girl from Michigan who grew up to open for Loretta Lynn. It’s the story of a young woman whose voice will break your heart but whose songs will bring you back for more.

SUMMARY:BOBBY LONG
DESCRIPTION:Please call to reserve at 920-563-9391 and send money in advance. \nBOBBY LONG  \nBritish singer-songwriter Bobby Long emerged from London’s club scene with a reputation for creating memorable songs inhabited by hauntingly poetic lyrics. He relocated to New York in 2009 and has since released three CDs inhabited by powerful original material: A Winter Tale (2011)—an homage to his acoustic roots; Wishbone (2013)—a gritty opus that showcases his sorrow-filled voice and his stellar guitar playing; and the latest\, Ode to Thinking\, which applies his varied musical influences to a new collection of compelling songs. Long has also published a volume of poetry—Losing My Brotherhood—with a second collection coming later this year. \nAn extraordinarily prolific songwriter who has at times been compared to his heroes\, among them Elliott Smith\, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan\, his newly written songs tend to undergo a metamorphosis during their live exposure. “With some songs\,” he says\,“you have to play them out before you record them because they’re not quite there yet. Playing them about 20 times in the right setting really helps\, but you also don’t want to overplay them because by the time you come to record them\, you’ve lost whatever it was that excited you about them.” \nFor his third album\, he’s returned to the basics\, a guy and a guitar\, recalling his heady early days on London’s open mic circuit. In the studio this time around\, he teamed with producer/musician Mark Hallman (Carole King\, Ani DiFranco) with the songs sturdily built around Long’s vocals and guitar. Hallman played bass guitar\, drums\, piano and organ on the recording and worked with Bobby to construct the background vocals and harmonies that complement his singularly plaintive voice. The creative process unfolded during a two-week period last fall at Hallman’s Congress House Studios inAustin\, Texas. \nODE TO THINKING is a solid collection of 11 original songs that suggest the intimacy of his live shows while the songwriting displays a hard-won maturity in its exploration of a variety of subjects. The title cut\, a paean to global apathy and confusion\, opens the recording with intricate fingerpicking on the guitar. From there\, the album traverses all manners of minefields of the heart (“Cold Hearted Lover of Mine\,” “Something Blue\,Something Borrowed” and “Treat Me Like a Stranger”) to the outer reaches of nostalgia and memory (“That Little Place I OnceKnew\,”“1985”). The lyrics of “I’m Not Going OutTonight” unfold like a movie in three acts\, while “Kill Someone” has a story all its own(he tells it during his shows). \nWriting and touring are now a way of life. Long headlines his own shows—known for their irreverent\, self-deprecating humor in addition to the music—and has supported  major artists including Steve Winwood\, Iron & Wine\, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Brett Dennen\, as well as playing high profile festivals like Bonnaroo\, Austin City Limits\, the Dave Matthews Caravan and Bamboozle. \n*****PLEASE CALL TO RESERVE at 920-563-9391 and send a check in advance.
