DESCRIPTION:The regular second Thursday date of May 14 did not work\, so the group chose this as the May date. \nThis five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. DESCRIPTION:Colin is joining up with some Milwaukee friends to provide you with a lively evening. \nBanjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, footboard playin’ COLIN O’BRIEN\, recently released his CD\, “After a Song”\, recorded in Nashville with some of music city’s best pickers: Larry Perkins\, Matt Combs\, Mark Howard and Dennis Crouch. Those boys were so enthralled with Colin they urged him to move there\, which he and his wife\, after a bit of consideration (1 or 2 minutes)\, did. \nIt was in the summer of 2011 that Nashville music legend Larry Perkins heard Colin’s set at the John Hartford Memorial Festival. Larry was side-struck. He immediately invited him down to Nashville make a record. The result\, After A Song\, features 12 of Colin’s originals and a band comprised of some of the late John Hartford’s band mates. \n“After A Song…Bottles the lighting that was John Hartford’s engagingly off-center songwriting” – Jon Weisberger\, The Nashville Scene. \nColin even played John Hartford’s banjos for the sessions! In addition to his solo work Mr. O’Brien has also recently formed The Colin O’Brien Stringband. It’s a veritable acoustic supergroup featuring some of Music City’s finest players\, Matt Combs\, Mike Compton and Todd Phillips. The group will be releasing a live recording “Live at the Station Inn” in very early 2013. \nColin has recently signed on with Nashville Artist Management and Promotion Company Rockin’ Robyn Productions. \nFROGWATER is a Milwaukee-based acoustic duo who perform Celtic\, bluegrass\, blues\, ragtime\, regional instrumental dance. \nJohn (Vocals\, Acoustic Guitar\, Banjo\, Mandolin) & Susan (Vocals\, Viola\, Mandolin) are particularly influenced by their love of  Irish & Scottish music\, with their passion being evident in performance. Matt Lorenz — aka Suitcase Junket — has been road dogging for three years\, solo and with his band Rusty Belle\, touring with Chris Smithers\, David Wax Museum\, and Peter Mulvey. He’s got a powerful new CD out called Make Time.\n\n\nMatt plays a collection of leather satchels\, baby shoes\, oil cans\, cast-iron kettles\, sticks\, bones\, and a ragged guitar he had pulled out of someone’s trash. At first the novelty is mesmerizing\, then the music is. Suitcase finds extreme sounds — the wicked grind of a guitar \, the vintage buzz of an old mic\, the wild insect drone in the throes throat singing  — and uses them to forward his restless skinny road-dog blues-playing big-hair cause. The boy has stories to tell.\n\n\nPeter Mulvey and many others sing Matt’s praises on a collection of various media\, including in-person speech\, echo chambers\, telephone\, shouting from the mountain tops and social media.\n\n\nMatt is a Vermont born musician\, visual artist and tinkerer\, and a professional showoff. “I aim to write good songs and sing them honestly” says Lorenz. He does that and more. The Suitcase Junket’s artistic vision is one of salvaged and repurposed objects\, images and emotions. His innovative junk-percussion constructions\, original album art featuring inanimate objects with wings\, and the high craft of his songwriting all combine to create a unique and engaging entity with a force and style all its own. Perhaps that has a something to do with the fact that BBST is made up of veteran musicians who have toured\, recorded\, or shared the stage with Leo Kottke\, The String Cheese Incident\, Lyle Lovett\, The Smashing Pumpkins\, Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, U2\, Asleep at the Wheel\, Garbage\, Willy Porter\, Riders in the Sky\, The Radiators\, David Grisman\, Alex DeGrassi\, Doc Watson\, Carrie Newcomer\, and Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band to name a few. Or\, it could simply be that Big Bang String Thing knows how to craft a great sound. \nTHE BAND: \nBob Westfall (mandolin\, guitar\, vocals\, songwriting) has studied and worked with some of the top acoustic players in the country -Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, and Alex DeGrassi. But\, while these influences are certainly evident\, Westfall’s songwriting are uniquely his own. An award-winning mandolinist\, Bob grew up in Texas and Minnesota\, and his style incorporates the best elements of storytelling with a hybrid jazz/pop/worldbeat/bluegrass feel. \nThe husband and wife team of Mary Gaines(bass) and Chris Wagoner (violin) provide the bottom and top of the BBST sound\, and have appeared in performance and on recordings with Westfall for over fifteen years. Gaines and Wagoner have similarly diverse backgrounds — formal classical training at the Univ. of WI\, jazz studies with the great bassist\, Richard Davis\, followed by years of performing and recording with jazz\, blues\, rock\, and folk artists and songwriters.

DESCRIPTION:The regular second Thursday date of April 9 did not work\, so the group chose this as the April date. \nThis five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. DESCRIPTION:TIM GRIMM and wife JAN LUCAS will share their lovely selves in an evening of music and stories. \nTim  is a bit of a Rennaisance man in the performing arts world. He has for the past 15 years\, blended his love for songwriting\, travel\, and the storytelling of acting (theatre\, film and television). His most recent recording\, THE TURNING POINT\, produced the #1 song on Folk radio in 2014– KING OF THE FOLKSINGERS. It was a particularly gratifying honor\, given the song is a tribute to Tim’s friend and musical icon\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Tim’s history with Ramblin’ Jack goes back 30 years– beginning with a bicycle ride that led to The Newport Folk Festival…. Tim contributing liner notes to Jack’s Grammy winning album\, The South Coast (1995)… Jack’s recording Buffalo Skinners with Tim on Tim’s album\, Coyote’s Dream (2003)….and now\, most recently KING OF THE FOLKSINGERS. \nTop Albums\, Songs\, Artists of 2014 (FOLKDJ-L) \n \nAfter college (Earlham)\, Grimm pursed an MFA in Theatre at The University of Michigan and from there worked in Regional Theatre\, settling in Chicago. In Chicago\, in addition to his theatre work\, he studied briefly at the Old Town School of Folk Music and began writing songs and performing. He put together a band\, Tim Grimm and The True Hearts and released 2 cds–True Heart\, Kind Mind and Broken Down Palace. At which point\, “Hollywood called”\, and Tim put down his guitar and pen\, and didn’t really pick them up for close to 10 years.\nAfter several years (1990s) working in Los Angeles (where he co-starred for 2 seasons on the NBC drama Reasonable Doubts\, worked on Clear and Present Danger with Harrison Ford\,  and appeared in several films and tv projects)\, Tim returned home to Indiana.  He grew up in the woods and small town settings of southern Indiana\, son of schoolteachers and grandson of farmers\, and his return home was a conscious choice to live a life of significance rather than one of “success’.  He now lives with his wife on  80 acres close to where he grew up. Tim’s songs are full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life—rich with descriptive details\, and sung with warmth and intimacy—recognizing the inextinguishable national romance with the idea of the family farm and the vanishing landscape of rural America.  He released the album\, HEART LAND in 2000\, and on the strength of that recording\, was named 2000’s “BEST DISCOVERY in Roots/Americana Music” by The Chicago Sun-Times. His albums COYOTES DREAM and NAMES\, led to his being named “2004 MALE ARTIST of The Year” by the Freeform American Roots DJs.\nHe has released 9 solo albums since 2000 (including the newest- THE TURNING POINT)\, and 2 collaborations- AMBER WAVES (with Jason Wilber) and WILDERNESS PLOTS. \nIn 2005\, Grimm was asked to compose music and act in a production of THE GRAPES OF WRATH at Indiana Repertory Theatre and Syracuse Stage in New York. His song from the play–THE PEOPLES HIGHWAY\, made it onto his next album\, THE BACK FIELDS\, which was subsequently named Americana Album of the Year by the Just Plain Folks Music Awards– the world’s largest independent music awards. \nIn 2007\, Grimm put together a concept cd with several of the Midwest’s finest songwriter’s— Krista Detor\, Carrie Newcomer\, Tom Roznowski\, and Michael White. The recording\, Wilderness Plots\, was drawn from the short stories of noted author\, Scott Russell Sanders\, and explored the settling of the American Wilderness in the Ohio River Valley Region between The Revolutionary War and The Civil War. Two PBS programs have explored Wilderness Plots– the first\, a documentary on the story and song\, and the second a full Wilderness Plots- In Concert (2012). Produced by WTIU in Bloomington\, IN\, both productions were nominated for EMMY AWARDS. Tim continued to write songs based on Sander’s writings and released the album\, WILDERNESS SONGS AND BAD MAN BALLADS in 2011. At about this same time\, Grimm also released a tribute album with songs of Tom Paxton\, entitled\, THANK YOU\, TOM PAXTON. \n“Now lets get this straight. Just because an artist covers “Blowin in the Wind” does not mean he sounds like Bob Dylan. Just wanted to get that straight from the start. “Holding Up The World” is Grimms fifth solo album and his first for Corazong\, and if the quality of his previous outings are only half of the songs here\, then I’ve been missing out on a real treat. Isnt it annoying when an album comes along from an artist that youve never heard of and you really like\, only to find out they’ve been around for ages. But I suppose it now means I can explore some of his old stuff with the thought that its gonna be pretty good.\nRecording songs live with just voice and guitar and then adding layers of instruments that fit the song\, Grimm has delivered a mighty fine modern folk record. \nThe title track opens the album and you know what? It just gets ya! There and then\, it grabs you and doesn’t let go. My god it’s beautiful. Instantly hummable\, with lyrics that engage your thoughts and make you both sad and happy simultaneously. What initially seems like a love song to his wife\, like all the best songs it also says something else. But what is it? …Holding up the world\, so many things get broken\, when you’re holding up the world\, you can’t protect your heart…. \nGrimm is a storyteller\, up there with the likes of Crowell\, Earle and Jackson Browne. He sings of families being lost\, the loss of rural America\, returnees from Basra\, slaves escaping a horrendous life\, floods\, yearning\, anguish and the reason why people faced with such adversity carry on whilst being totally empathetic toward their plight or feelings. He also brings in other music genres within the Americana field like some Appalachian on “Or Bust”. Bit like Woody Guthrie. Supported by Jason Wilber from John Prine’s band\, and label mate Krista Detor\, Grimm has restored my faith in today’s folk music. It was starting to wane\, but this guy has bought it back.\nI’m not going to single out any other tracks for praise. I can’t\, because they’re all excellent. It’s taken me ages to get around to reviewing this album and that’s simply because Ive been too busy listening to it.\nOh yes\, he does do a version of “Blowin in the Wind”. Like the great American singers and songwriters who have inspired him—performers such as Neil Young\, Jerry Garcia and Willie Nelson—Ernie seeks the light amidst the ever-present perils of darkness.\nBorn and raised in the Midwest\, Ernie Hendrickson grew up on a steady diet of Willie Nelson\, Bob Dylan\, Neil Young\, Cat Stevens\, and Jerry Garcia. These early heroes opened the gates to the deep well of American roots music which he continues to draw inspiration from. In 2007 he self-produced and released a highly acclaimed solo record\, Down the Road\, of which the Illinois Entertainer deemed “Groundbreaking” and pushed him straight onto the Midwest’s radar as an emerging singer-songwriter. Hendrickson set the talent bar high in the studio for this album with a cast of players that included the subtle and angelic backing vocals of his sister\, Kelly Hendrickson\, and the legendary harmonica player\, Howard Levy (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones\, Paul Simon)\, aligned with an all-star group of Chicago musicians.\nHendrickson’s second record\, Walking with Angels\, began with a chance meeting between Ernie and veteran producer Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown\, Lucinda Williams) in the spring of ’08 in Iowa City\, where Ernie was opening a show for an old friend of Bo’s\, Kevin Gordon. Even in early conversation\, the two agreed that there was a chemistry evolving that would only deepen once the sessions began. At Bo’s urging\, Ernie sang and played nearly all of the songs on the record with a live band which consisted of Bo\, Jon Penner on bass (Junior Brown\, Bo Ramsey)\, and Steve Hayes on drums (Greg Brown\, Bo Ramsey). This call was made by Bo to try and capture the energy of a great performance and the result could not have been better. All twelve songs on the record feel as though these four guys had been playing together for years. After adding legendary Chicago pedal steel player Brian Wilkie (Alison Krauss\, Pam Tillis) on several tracks\, Bob Black’s banjo (Bill Monroe)\, and taking a trip to Nashville to record keyboardist Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton)\, the record shines as a true testament to Hendrickson’s ripening powers as a songwriter. Radio promotion has taken the sophomore album’s success to a higher level on both AAA and Americana stations\, having spent over 25 weeks in the Top 20 on Roots Music Report’s Folk charts and in regular rotation at nearly 100 different stations across the country including Nashville’s award-winning WSM-AM The Legend.

DESCRIPTION:SAM LLANAS (formerly of the BoDeans) is an iconic American singer\, acoustic guitarist\, and songwriter best known for his unique and distinctively soulful voice. It was Llanas’ voice that supplied the trademark vocal on Robbie Robertson’s “Somewhere Down the Crazy River.” \nIn 1997 Llanas founded the band Absinthe. As Absinthe Sam released one album\, 1998’s critically acclaimed A Good Day To Die. In 2011 Sam Llanas left the BoDeans and released 4 A.M. (The Way Home) on Inner Knot Records. In 2013 he released the live retrospective 4/5 Live – Vol I. \nIn 2012 the music from 1998‘s A Good Day To Die was incorporated into a collaboration with playwright Doug Vincent and producer Gary Tanin in the production “A Day for Grace.” By 2013 the play had evolved to include multi-city tours and multi-week runs in New York City. \nIn November 2014 Llanas released The Whole Night Thru\,  an all new studio record produced by longtime collaborator Gary Tanin. It features 9 new Llanas originals. The Whole Night Thru is Llanas’ first studio outing after parting ways with the band he co-fronted for over a quarter century. Shedding new light on a multi-decade career Sam returns to his roots adding a refined rock sound complimented by a full band\, all veterans of both studio and live performance. Behind his lone-wolf image and tuffness\, Llanas continues to hone his skills. DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine. \nLike them on Facebook.
