SUMMARY:JIM CRAIG! / MARK DVORAK / BILL CAMPLIN
DESCRIPTION:ATTENTION:  The summer fling of the Delta variant has us once again rethinking how to do safely do our business. The small space of the listening room prevents any reasonable distancing.  For the safety of everyone\, and to protect the performers who cannot mask while performing\, we will be requiring mask wearing in the backroom\, and recommending it in all of our spaces when not eating or drinking. \nA lovely in-the-round song swap that was originally scheduled for last year. \nFor those of you who cannot be here in person\, you may watch on our YouTube channel using this link.  Donations accepted at www.paypal.me/cafecarpe \nIt has been a long time since we have had JIM CRAIG! as a solo act\, and to have him with the wonderful MARK DVORAK and BILL CAMPLIN should make for a fantastic evening of music and camaraderie. \n\n\n\nJIM came of age during the folk boom\, “listening to Pete Seeger and Dave Van Ronk\, but also more obscure musicians like Dock Boggs and Pink Anderson\, folks who were off the map but were rediscovered in the early ’60s.” He was a regular at the Green Dragon Inn\,  where we came to know and love him for his understated warm grace. Jim has guitar chops and a beautiful baritone voice\, and an interesting repertoire of songs. \nHe taught guitar at the Old Town School of Folk Music\, jammed with figures in the Chicago folk scene such as Eddie Holstein and Steve Goodman. He is the owner of Hogeye Music in Evanston. He is a gentleman. \n\nMARK DVORAK is a modern day troubadour who has never stopped performing\, writing and recording. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” with “an encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs.” His original songs are described as “wondrous” and “profound.” Though Mark often appears in theaters and on festival stages\, he is also at home in a more intimate setting. His concerts are a mix of the familiar and the new\, traditional folk and standards from the American songbook. He plays authentic country blues guitar and picks great old-time banjo. \nMark enjoys involving his audiences in sing-along songs\, just like The Weavers used to do\, and mixes in his own well-crafted and infectious originals. Mark has a refreshing\, down-to-earth stage presence\, and is a very engaging performer. He sings with a clear\, signature voice\, and he likes to joke around with the folks who attend his shows. Throughout the program he’ll interject personal anecdotes and add a touch of history or social context to the performance. \n“Masterful” Chicago Tribune \n“The real deal. His show is funny\, passionate\, intimate & unforgettable” Old Town School of Folk Music \n“One of a vanishing breed. Although all of us benefit from the tradition\, Dvorak is one of the few who keep it alive.” Utah Phillips \nAnd then there’s BILL CAMPLIN\, who can sing and play guitar too. Amazing \nDid I mention this will be a really fun in-the-round? \n

SUMMARY:JOHN SIEGER with special guest ROBIN PLUER
DESCRIPTION:Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve seats. See Home page regarding COVID at the Carpe.  It is not our weekly special\, and though it has been de rigeur\, we do not want to serve it. \nSongwriter\, singer and guitarist JOHN SIEGER has a long resume. His band the R&B Cadets ruled the dance floors in Milwaukee in the 1980s\, playing a mix of his originals and obscure soul tunes unearthed by bandmates Paul Cebar and Robin Pluer. Their debut\, “Top Happy\,” for Twin/Tone Records\, turned out to be their finale. In the late 80’s his band Semi-Twang recorded for Warner Brothers Records. Both bands have regrouped in recent years and since then\, Semi-Twang has released three more collections of his songs\, most recently and ode to his hometown\, “Kenosha.” \nOther Sieger songs have been covered by a long list of great artists including Dwight Yoakam (Don’t Need It Done)\, Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads (Rev It Up)\, The Bodeans (The Strangest Kind)\, Flaco Jimenez (I Found Out)\, Robbie Fulks (You Break It – You Pay)\, Phil Lee (I Hope Love Always Knows Your Name\, Neon Tombstone) and Greg Trooper (My Bluebell\, Real Like That and others). Recorded but still waiting to be released\, is a version of “Salty Tears\,” sung by Etta James. \nAsked to describe his newest release\, an 11-song collection called Modern Folk\, Vol. II\, Sieger says\, “These songs draw a bead on the cracks between folk\, blues\, country and pop. It’s dedicated to artists I admire\, ones who avoid calling themselves poets\, but always strive for something poetic in their writing.” \n“Sieger on Songs\,” his column at UrbanMilwaukee.com\, is John’s ongoing love letter to the music he digs. A live show at the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts (on hiatus for now) brings John and fellow artists together to talk about their songs and those that have influenced them in a new series called “Sieger on Songs: Conversations.” \nFor the second set he will be joined by special guest\, ROBIN PLUER\, a sultry diva with pizzazz and jazzy style-  a multi-faceted songstress who elegantly but playfully delivers a mélange of vintage French ballads with a distinctive twist\, as well as some R & B gems and non-French ballads.

SUMMARY:PETER MULVEY- sold out
DESCRIPTION:Welcome back to the home turf\, Peter- it’s been a covid while. \nWe are live streaming this show on our Carpecast YouTube Channel. Here is the link to access the show– donations may be made to www.paypal.me/cafecarpe \n\n \n \n \n \nPETER MULVEY has been a songwriter\, road-dog\, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee\, he took a semester in Ireland\, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country\, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside\, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston\, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows\, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since. \nNineteen records\, an illustrated book\, thousands of live performances\, a TEDx talk\, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp\, opening for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco\, Emmylou Harris\, and Chuck Prophet\, appearances on NPR\, an annual autumn tour by bicycle\, emceeing festivals\, hosting his own boutique festival (the Lamplighter Sessions\, in Boston and Wisconsin)… Mulvey never stops. He has built his life’s work on collaboration and an instinct for the eclectic and the vital. He folds everything he encounters into his work: poetry\, social justice\, scientific literacy\, & a deeply abiding humanism are all on plain display in his art. \nIn late January 2019\, Mulvey and his band\, SistaStrings (Chauntee & Monique Ross) with Nathan Kilen on drums\, decamped to their home turf\, the Cafe Carpe\, in Fort Atkinson\, WI where they spent just five days making two records in the tiny back room. The live record\, “Peter Mulvey with SistaStrings Live at the Cafe Carpe” is out now on Righteous Babe Records. It’s a celebration of a world that is temporarily on hold: a small folk club\, packed with listeners\, and a band shoulder-to-shoulder\, playing and singing with intimacy and abandon. \nThe other shoe\, “Shenandoah” a studio album about love and family in the midst of a dying empire\, will drop in early 2021\, provided there is still a republic within which to drop it.

SUMMARY:LIVE STREAMING- Michael Hecht w/ Bill Camplin
DESCRIPTION:A live streaming Carpecast on the Cafe Carpe YouTube channel with literary artist MICHAEL HECHT  reading excerpts from writings and speeches \, and musical interludes by BILL CAMPLIN. Streaming link: https://youtu.be/W3S3k37agfw. Donation link www.paypal.me/cafecarpe will also be posted during the show. \nSubscribing to our YouTube channel allows you to set Notifications to alert you to any upcoming live stream event. Past events can be accessed with that link\, but for live events you will need the streaming link mentioned above. \nFrom the mouth of Bill: \n“This Thursday\, May 20th I will be sharing an evening of excerpts form the writing of poets\, playwrights\, authors and historical figures with Michael Hecht.  These will include Helen Keller\, Arthur Miller\, Eric Maria Ramarque\, Lucy Atkins\, Yusef Kamuryakaa\, Jimmy Santiago Baca\, Dalton Trumbo\, Martin Luther King Richard Harrison\, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes. \nThis will be at least the 7th time we have worked together with me supplying songs spaced between the writing he has organized and reads from.  I have never had a better collaboration in which to place songs\, which in this case are all my own writings.  It is not to presume that I am equating my own lyrics with any of these writers\, but allows me to visit the type of writing that has inspired and informed me through out my 74 years ( minus the first 7 or so).  Most of Mr. Hecht’s choices were specifically unknown to me so I am in the audience too.  As I listen I find a comfortability in performing that I have seldom had.  It feels so right. \nIt runs about 75 minutes and will transmit on the Cafe Carpe YouTube channel.  Also will be available on YouTube for some time after.  It is such a pleasure to sing in the context of the written word. \n

SUMMARY:CHRIS PORTERFIELD Carpecast
DESCRIPTION:Catch Milwaukee’s CHRIS PORTERFIELD working his magic in our Carpecast series\, brought to you in living color and stellar sound quality by our amazing production team of Satchel and DJ.  Here is the YouTube link for the live show. \nThis will be Chris’ first solo acoustic show here. He’s joined us the last few years for our Lamplighter series in December\, and his spirit always feels right at home in our space. We’re really happy to have him for a full night this time around. \nPlease throw something in the hat if you can\, so we can offset production costs\, and make this worth everyone’s while. We encourage you to tune in\, regardless. \nAny donations received will be split 50/50 between Chris and Café Carpe. It would help us gauge interest/support if you would offer a handshake pledge by sending an e-mail to yocarpecast@gmail.com with “Chris Porterfield” in the subject line.  Sort of like buying a ticket in advance\, but not. \nWe’ll provide a PayPal link for donations during the broadcast\, of course. Hope you can make it! \nCheck out our YouTube channel and consider subscribing. The live show will not appear on the channel during the livestream\, so be sure to use the link above to see the show.  Shortly after the show is over it will appear on our channel.

DESCRIPTION:Well\, for some reason we cannot hold any events here\, so\, nanny nanny booboo\, fine- we will hold the annual Lamplighter sessions virtually.  A link will be provided here and on Facebook pages by the time it is needed. \nWhile we will all miss the excitement and anxiety the weather often caused\, and the pleasures of being crammed in a small room after eating in a noisy restaurant\, with a little mindfulness and gratitude and acceptance we will share a good experience in a new way. \nThanks to Corky and Randy for sharing their talents\, and to listeners for participating in the adventure. \nRecommended donation: $25 \nHere is the link. \nBlues legend teams with jazz violinist and all-around fun guy for a delightful holiday evening of music. \n\nThis is a special 83 minute presentation sponsored by us\, the Cafe Carpe.\n\nA similar show with many of the same songs was broadcast on Nov 15 in Three Lakes Wisconsin.\n\nABOUT THE SHOW: Corky Siegel and Randy Sabien offer 83 minutes of Blues Harmonica\, Piano\, Jazz Violin\, wild songs\, a little laugh out loud silliness\, and a unique “big hug” approach to a virtual CLOSE UP concert.\n\nFROM Corky:\n\n“My 77 year career sees its culmination in my most creative period as Mother Nature has sent me and my collaborator\, Randy Sabien\, to our respective rooms (along with the rest of us). You are invited into those rooms vibrating with creativity\, fun\, and love. Randy and I have taken our life-long skill sets as world performers and poured our individual and collective hearts out to create an experience for you that could not have happened on a stage. Don’t miss this one for your life!” – Corky Siegel \n\nThe CLOSE UP show is sponsored by the sweet Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson\, Wisconsin starring Alison Welch (Kitty)\, Bill Camplin\, and Satchel Paige. \n\n A ZOOM meet and greet will follow the show at 8:45 PM \nQuestions: cork@chamberblues.com\n\nCORKY SIEGEL\n“… fantastic … I’ve never heard anyone play harp with this much body and harmonic delicacy … I guarantee you’ve never heard anything quite like it.”- Stereophile Magazine\n \n“A memorable musical joy ride…Siegel plays wonderfully on harmonica as well as piano and combines it with a grand sense of humor and showmanship.” – San Francisco Examiner\n\nCorky Siegel has earned an international reputation as one of the world’s great blues harmonica masters. He is a composer\, blues pianist\, singer / songwriter\, and recent winner of the Lila Wallace/Reader’s Digest/Meet the Composer’s national award for chamber music composition and the Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award for Music Composition.\n\nRANDY SABIEN \n“Jazz violinists usually draw from one of two traditions. The best of both can be found in the superb Randy Sabien… he combines classical technique and folk energy in a program that’s still strictly jazz.”\nUSA TODAY \n“…The resulting sound is swinging\, rocking\, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all\, Randy is a product of his time – someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. “ \nTune in on line for the holiday romp with 2 talented guys.

SUMMARY:THE BOSTON IMPOSTERS benefit concert for the Carpe
DESCRIPTION:Maire Clement and Davey Harrison\, THE BOSTON IMPOSTERS\, are a midwestern-hearted husband-wife duo who somehow landed in Boston\, then returned to the midwest\, and now live in Oconomowoc. Davey hails from England\, Maire grew up in Minnesota (her mother grew up in Fort Atkinson)\, and they began their journey together in Appleton\, Wisconsin. \nThis geographically-experimental duo have generously offered to donate a portion of the proceeds from one of their regular Sunday live-streamed shows to the Cafe Carpe. Here is the link to use to access the show. \nThe duo blends beautiful harmonies\, accompanied by acoustic guitar\, mandolin\, and banjo to craft heartfelt original songs. Inspired by traditional\, classic and contemporary folk music\, they write about their lives and experiences\, inspired by the people who have been a part of their journey. \nThank you Marie and Davey for your generosity.

SUMMARY:GEORGIA RAE/ GEORGIA RAE FAMILY BAND-cancelled
DESCRIPTION:This will be rescheduled sometime next year\, when we hope to be able to gather together in music again.\n\nGEORGIA RAE FAMILY BAND\nTwo sisters from the midwest\, Georgia Rae and Kelly Jo have grown into quite a songwriting team since they began playing together at age 12 and 15. Their sound has grown from the traditional into contemporary Americana flavored with family harmony and youthful energy. 7 time state fiddle champion Georgia Rae and sister lead singer/uke Kelly Jo\, are joined by a solid driving rhythm “punk rockin’ momma” on guitar\, Joe Burie on bass and Laura Lanza on mandolin.  They have been pedaling their recent CDs\, “Into Our Own” and “Wingin’ It” from Texas to MN and WI\, and as east as NC. Their original songs are clever and catchy and evoke good vibes all around. \nGEORGIA RAE also performs solo\, alone on stage with a pedal board and some fancy footwork. She loops the tracks right in front of you and builds each song into flight with beautiful sounds\, clever lyrics\, and some rippin’ fiddle solos. Be amazed\, leave happy.

SUMMARY:Live Streamed Benefit Concert w/ Willy Porter\, SistaStrings\, Paul Cebar & Bill Camplin
DESCRIPTION:We had technical difficulties- here is the new link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ8lQ6LHmPo \n  \n  \nPerhaps you noticed that the Carpe hasn’t put on a show here since GARNET ROGERS played here in March. Most of you can figure out why… \nWe’re doing alright in the grand scheme of things\, but it’s not at all clear just yet how or when we’ll be able to reboot and rebuild the delicate infrastructure of spaces that facilitate so many beautiful and priceless things\, or what all we’ll lose in the meantime. \nThis Sunday from the edge of our garden in our lot\, we’re broadcasting a show on YouTube with our friends SISTASTRINGS\, WILLY PORTER\, and PAUL CEBAR—as well as with Mr. Carpe himself\, BILL CAMPLIN. In essence\, this show is two things: an excuse to get together and celebrate the good things in life with some old friends we’ve missed a great deal\, and a benefit concert to help us all cushion the blow a bit. It’s going to be a beautiful day full of whimsical magic\, so tune in if you can. \nHere is the o view the live stream event. Consider using that link in advance of the show to subscribe\, and set yourself up for a reminder. DESCRIPTION:CURTIS & LORETTA \nCurtis & Loretta’s music comes straight from the heart.   The husband and wife duo’s extraordinary harmonies and proficiency on a parade of stringed instruments create an alluring frame for their poignant original songs\, and traditional pieces from America and the British Isles.  The current menagerie includes mandocello\, folk harp\, guitars\, clawhammer banjo\, ukulele\, and mandolin\, plus a bit of kazoo\, harmonica\, and shakers. Curtis’ down-home sense of humor and Loretta’s theater background engage the audience in an experience that runs the gamut of rolling with laughter to holding back tears\, with plenty of side-trips in between.  They rack up countless miles each year\, crisscrossing the country to deliver their own unique brand of folk singer/songwriter music. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve seats. \n
