SUMMARY:THE NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:Slightly off schedule again this month- This five piece outfit featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin do a once-a-month performance here\, usually the 2nd Thursday. But once a year we throw them onto a Saturday night. \nIts various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer.  As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine.

SUMMARY:LOS ZOMBIES/ Sonny Blood & Friends open
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever woken up from a wonderful dream and tried to hold onto its memory all day? Los Zombies’ debut album is something like that. Guzzo Pinc\, Mongoose Milford\, Captain Cosmo\, and the Tall Guy will be bringing their musical stylings\, along with the new cd. \nSonny Blood and Friends will open\, playing from 8 to about 9. This Madison group is an experimental acoustic outfit whose music is completely improvised.

SUMMARY:JT NERO & ALLISON RUSSELL
DESCRIPTION:ALLISON RUSSELL‘S clarion voice wraps around the broken country-soul croon of JT NERO\, delivering their tales of hope\, despair and… seahorses. Echoes of mountain gospel\, doo wop\, and classic soul\, with back porch instrumentation. Two of the most compelling new voices in American music. \n“Greenwich Village-style busker soul\, caught between two generations of tragic Buckleys”\n– Chicago Reader \n“This January\, though\, I urge the whole human crowd to see these guys!” Peter Mulvey Facebook quote

SUMMARY:MIKE DOWLING and RANDY SABIEN
DESCRIPTION:Our usual New Year’s Eve extravaganza dinner and show package. Dinner includes hors d’ouevres\, buffet style meal with salad\, soup\, side and main dishes\, and dessert between sets of music. \nMusic is by the fabulous MIKE DOWLING \nthe also fabulous RANDY SABIEN \n“Singer/guitarist Mike Dowling and string king Randy Sabien make some marvelously good-natured acoustic roots music on Live at the Cafe Carpe. The duo tackles a broad spectrum of styles and songwriters . . . Dowling’s instrumental contributions to ‘Jan’s Song’ and ‘Jitterbug Waltz’ are exceptional. It’s awfully difficult to dislike anything here\, so don’t bother trying.” That’s what I say\, too- why make your life difficult when there’s nothing to dislike?

SUMMARY:DEVIL IN THE OUTHOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Reservations strongly encouraged.  Unfathomable\, but these guys draw. \nWho/what:  Devil in the Outhouse\n(previously known as What’s His Name & the Other Guys) will be playing at the Café Carpe once again for our annual holiday show. \nWhen:  Thursday\, December 29; 7:30 pm \nWhere:  Café Carpe\, Ft. Atkinson\, WI (just Google map it!) \nWhat/who:  Brian Lucas\, Scott McCormick\, Greg Valde (and whoever else shows up) will be offering their traditional holiday concert (has it been 5 years now?) which is unlikely to include any holiday music.  However\, there will be folk\, blues\, comedy and bathroom services available.  The show starts at 7:30\, but we encourage you to come early and eat dinner at the Café Carpe.  The food is great and we certainly don’t want Kitty and Bill to go out of business.  Who else would let us play in such a nice music room? \nWhy:  So you can hear Scott play blues accordion\, so Greg can feel young again\, so Looper can make his kids think he’s cool\, but mostly so Scott can be glad he moved to Colorado….

SUMMARY:PETER MULVEY/ DAVID GOODRICH/ SATCHEL PAIGE/ BILL CAMPLIN
DESCRIPTION:Peter Mulvey    “Over the past 20 years\, Mulvey has pursued a restless\, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin PanAlley jazz\, modern acoustic\, poetry\, narrative\, and Americana stylings. Relentlessly touring as a headliner “ his attitude is\, “When you love what you do\, you can work all the time\,” he has also shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris\, Richard Thompson\, Ani diFranco\, Indigo Girls\, and Greg Brown\, and has attracted an audience that stretches from Anchorage to Amsterdam.\nNight after night\, whether performing solo\, duo (with David “Goody” Goodrich)\, or sometimes even with a band\, Mulvey attempts to be the sum of his parts\, to draw on all the musical legacies* he has studied\, to make a fresh\, vital moment out of everything he and the audience have brought to the table that night. “People need this. I need this. To come together in a room\, to try to make music come alive\, for real\, for right now\, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me.” ” \nDavid Goodrich   Known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, newwave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\, (as well as Bill Camplin)  “Goody”  continues to hone a sound all his own. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. Fans of Pat Metheny\, Bill Frisell\, and Ry Cooder will find DUST OF MANY HORSES the perfect companion. \nSatchel Paige  Through an accident of birth\, this gentleman has inherited wiring both faulty and first-rate.  He’s got him a fine voice and some guitar chops- no mutton chops- yet. He’s the paleo man– he makes things all right. \nBill Camplin  He’s one of the 50% responsible for the above accident of birth.  “the proverbial best singer nobody’s ever heard of”.  Helps to run a small club in southeastern Wisconsin.

I need this. To come together in a room\, to try to make music come alive\, for real\, for right now\, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me.” ” \nRandy Sabien  is a jazz violinist. That means he plays jazz on the violin\, right?  Yes\, No and What do you mean by jazz? \nFor Randy\, the term Jazz Violin is little more than the name of the musical genre where his recordings are found. He regularly steps beyond the boundaries of what many think of as jazz\, forging headlong into the worlds of rock\, blues and funk. His career began with classical violin lessons\, he soon picked up fiddling and from there it was only natural he would find himself playing along with his favorite rock tunes. Then at age 19 he was reborn with the discovery that you could play jazz on the violin. The resulting sound is swinging\, rocking\, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all\, Randy is a product of his time – someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. \nDavid Goodrich   Known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, newwave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\,  “Goody”  continues to hone a sound all his own. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. Fans of Pat Metheny\, Bill Frisell\, and Ry Cooder will find DUST OF MANY HORSES the perfect companion. \nDavid and Randy first met at the recording sessions of Bill Camplin’s CD Old Bones\, and it was mutual love and respect at first listen. \nSpeaking of Bill Camplin\, he’s part of this event too.  Jack of all tirades\, master of some\, such as singing his heart out. \nsee special holiday post

SUMMARY:PETER MULVEY/ CLAUDIA SCHMIDT/ JIM SCHWALL
DESCRIPTION:Peter Mulvey    “Over the past 20 years\, Mulvey has pursued a restless\, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin PanAlley jazz\, modern acoustic\, poetry\, narrative\, and Americana stylings. Relentlessly touring as a headliner “ his attitude is\, “When you love what you do\, you can work all the time\,” he has also shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris\, Richard Thompson\, Ani diFranco\, Indigo Girls\, and Greg Brown\, and has attracted an audience that stretches from Anchorage to Amsterdam. \nNight after night\, whether performing solo\, duo (with David “Goody” Goodrich)\, or sometimes even with a band\, Mulvey attempts to be the sum of his parts\, to draw on all the musical legacies* he has studied\, to make a fresh\, vital moment out of everything he and the audience have brought to the table that night. “People need this. I need this. To come together in a room\, to try to make music come alive\, for real\, for right now\, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me.” ” \nClaudia Schmidt  has recorded fourteen albums of mostly original songs\, exploring folk\, blues\, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed 12 string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. Recently\, she collaborated with the New Reformation Jazz Band on a Dixieland gospel recording and a tribute to Gershwin and Ellington in celebration of their hundredth birthdays. \nA musician who has always hated categories\, she describes herself as a “creative noisemaker\,” which has irritated some critics but delighted many audiences\, who learn to expect anything at a Schmidt concert\, hymn\, poem\, bawdy verse\, torch song\, satire\, and the gamut of emotions. Her live performances are not to be missed. Her musicality is astonishing. Her joy and love of performing are contagious. She can weave the elements of music and stage into a program so unified and full of life that one critic has described a Claudia Schmidt concert as “….a lot like falling in love. You never know what’s going to happen next\, chances are it’s going to be wonderful\, every moment is burned into your memory\, and you know you’ll never be the same again.” \nJim Schwall started playing several different kinds of music on several different instruments while in elementary school.  By the time he finished high school\, he was primarily playing various kinds of traditional folk music\, including bluegrass and country blues\, on the guitar.  Gradually\, originals\, usually based on traditional styles\, replaced the traditional tunes and Jim has continued to play solo gigs all his life.  In college\, Jim met harmonica and piano player Corky Siegel\, added a pickup to his Gibson guitar\, and they started the Siegel-Schwall Band\, performing for about ten years and releasing over a dozen record albums on the Vanguard and Wooden Nickel labels.  After Siegel-Schwall disbanded in 1974\, Jim continued to play in several versions of the Jim Schwall Band while going back to college\, eventually completing a doctorate in music composition\, becoming a professor of music\, and teaching composition in universities.  More recently\, Jim has been teaching in high schools and doing social service work\, running a program housing the mentally ill who had become homeless.  Siegel-Schwall started playing reunion concerts in 1988\, releasing a live album in 1989 and a studio album in 2005\, both on Alligator Records.\nSee special holiday show post

It’s a realization that songs can hold a whole lot more than they’re usually expected to hold\, that they can possess a genuine sense of place as evocative and magical as the finest literature… \nHis songs are so resonant in layers of myth and magic\, and so perfectly enhanced by the genuine beauty of his melodies and instrumental arrangements\, that you can listen to a single one over and over for an afternoon and feel satisfied. \nSee special holiday show post.

A high school ‘Battle of the Bands’ champion\, the textbook lonely college kid making dinner dates with his guitar\, Williams took the well-worn suburban route to musical accomplishment: he hit the ground running with a ’64 Gibson that his mother bought at a garage sale\, listened hard to everything from the Beatles to Buckley\, and somewhere along the way began to write the tunes that would become his own voice. \n“Looking at the bespectacled youth peering out from the album bio\, you would never expect the smoky authoritative voice that swells from Cotton Bell. But maybe Williams’ appearance belies his age\, this being the Milwaukee singer-songwriter’s third full length album. Williams’ is the voice of maturity and restraint\, and by voice I mean not only his deep\, resonant singing\, but his approach\, attitude\, songwriting – the whole deal. Full of gentle\, tender songs beautifully recorded\, Cotton Bell presents nothing groundbreaking or startling. But the deeper you listen\, the further you appreciate those sounds and songs. Dan McMahon’s guitar and pedal steel and dobro are consistently grace full and as a co-producer\, he’s clearly a crucial ingredient to the impact of Cotton Bell. Strings and harmonies flesh out the songs beautifully throughout – Third track in ‘Mockingbird’ is a great example\,just gorgeous to listen to\, a breathtaking guitar solo\, strings and harmonies swelling and subsiding\, and Williams’ vocal melody glowing throughout.”  Rhythms Magazine. (Australia) \nDave Ramont– “rootsrock\, twangslop\, americana with muddy feet”.  The Austin Chronicle said “The world could always use another quality singer-songwriter with meaty lyrics\, gritty vocals and a tight back-up band.”\nCall it Americana\, roots-pop\, folk-slop\, whatever- Dave aims to spread these songs around like a thin layer of grease on a cast iron skillet. And when no one’s looking he’ll likely kick something down the street…\nSEE special holiday show post \n
