DESCRIPTION:Peter Mulvey    “Over the past 20 years\, Mulvey has pursued a restless\, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin PanAlley jazz\, modern acoustic\, poetry\, narrative\, and Americana stylings. Relentlessly touring as a headliner “ his attitude is\, “When you love what you do\, you can work all the time\,” he has also shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris\, Richard Thompson\, Ani diFranco\, Indigo Girls\, and Greg Brown\, and has attracted an audience that stretches from Anchorage to Amsterdam.\nNight after night\, whether performing solo\, duo (with David “Goody” Goodrich)\, or sometimes even with a band\, Mulvey attempts to be the sum of his parts\, to draw on all the musical legacies* he has studied\, to make a fresh\, vital moment out of everything he and the audience have brought to the table that night. “People need this. I need this. To come together in a room\, to try to make music come alive\, for real\, for right now\, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me.” ” \nDavid Goodrich   Known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, newwave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\, (as well as Bill Camplin)  “Goody”  continues to hone a sound all his own. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. Fans of Pat Metheny\, Bill Frisell\, and Ry Cooder will find DUST OF MANY HORSES the perfect companion. \nSatchel Paige  Through an accident of birth\, this gentleman has inherited wiring both faulty and first-rate.  He’s got him a fine voice and some guitar chops- no mutton chops- yet. He’s the paleo man– he makes things all right. \nBill Camplin  He’s one of the 50% responsible for the above accident of birth.  “the proverbial best singer nobody’s ever heard of”.  Helps to run a small club in southeastern Wisconsin.

I need this. To come together in a room\, to try to make music come alive\, for real\, for right now\, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me.” ” \nRandy Sabien  is a jazz violinist. That means he plays jazz on the violin\, right?  Yes\, No and What do you mean by jazz? \nFor Randy\, the term Jazz Violin is little more than the name of the musical genre where his recordings are found. He regularly steps beyond the boundaries of what many think of as jazz\, forging headlong into the worlds of rock\, blues and funk. His career began with classical violin lessons\, he soon picked up fiddling and from there it was only natural he would find himself playing along with his favorite rock tunes. Then at age 19 he was reborn with the discovery that you could play jazz on the violin. The resulting sound is swinging\, rocking\, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all\, Randy is a product of his time – someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. \nDavid Goodrich   Known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, newwave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\,  “Goody”  continues to hone a sound all his own. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. Fans of Pat Metheny\, Bill Frisell\, and Ry Cooder will find DUST OF MANY HORSES the perfect companion. \nDavid and Randy first met at the recording sessions of Bill Camplin’s CD Old Bones\, and it was mutual love and respect at first listen. \nSpeaking of Bill Camplin\, he’s part of this event too.  Jack of all tirades\, master of some\, such as singing his heart out. \nsee special holiday post

Relentlessly touring as a headliner “ his attitude is\, “When you love what you do\, you can work all the time\,” he has also shared the stage with luminaries such as Emmylou Harris\, Richard Thompson\, Ani diFranco\, Indigo Girls\, and Greg Brown\, and has attracted an audience that stretches from Anchorage to Amsterdam. \nNight after night\, whether performing solo\, duo (with David “Goody” Goodrich)\, or sometimes even with a band\, Mulvey attempts to be the sum of his parts\, to draw on all the musical legacies* he has studied\, to make a fresh\, vital moment out of everything he and the audience have brought to the table that night. “People need this. I need this. To come together in a room\, to try to make music come alive\, for real\, for right now\, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me.” ” \nClaudia Schmidt  has recorded fourteen albums of mostly original songs\, exploring folk\, blues\, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed 12 string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. Recently\, she collaborated with the New Reformation Jazz Band on a Dixieland gospel recording and a tribute to Gershwin and Ellington in celebration of their hundredth birthdays. \nA musician who has always hated categories\, she describes herself as a “creative noisemaker\,” which has irritated some critics but delighted many audiences\, who learn to expect anything at a Schmidt concert\, hymn\, poem\, bawdy verse\, torch song\, satire\, and the gamut of emotions. Her live performances are not to be missed. Her musicality is astonishing. Her joy and love of performing are contagious. She can weave the elements of music and stage into a program so unified and full of life that one critic has described a Claudia Schmidt concert as “….a lot like falling in love. You never know what’s going to happen next\, chances are it’s going to be wonderful\, every moment is burned into your memory\, and you know you’ll never be the same again.” \nJim Schwall started playing several different kinds of music on several different instruments while in elementary school.  By the time he finished high school\, he was primarily playing various kinds of traditional folk music\, including bluegrass and country blues\, on the guitar.  Gradually\, originals\, usually based on traditional styles\, replaced the traditional tunes and Jim has continued to play solo gigs all his life.  In college\, Jim met harmonica and piano player Corky Siegel\, added a pickup to his Gibson guitar\, and they started the Siegel-Schwall Band\, performing for about ten years and releasing over a dozen record albums on the Vanguard and Wooden Nickel labels.  After Siegel-Schwall disbanded in 1974\, Jim continued to play in several versions of the Jim Schwall Band while going back to college\, eventually completing a doctorate in music composition\, becoming a professor of music\, and teaching composition in universities.  More recently\, Jim has been teaching in high schools and doing social service work\, running a program housing the mentally ill who had become homeless.  Siegel-Schwall started playing reunion concerts in 1988\, releasing a live album in 1989 and a studio album in 2005\, both on Alligator Records.\nSee special holiday show post

It’s a realization that songs can hold a whole lot more than they’re usually expected to hold\, that they can possess a genuine sense of place as evocative and magical as the finest literature… \nHis songs are so resonant in layers of myth and magic\, and so perfectly enhanced by the genuine beauty of his melodies and instrumental arrangements\, that you can listen to a single one over and over for an afternoon and feel satisfied. \nSee special holiday show post.

SUMMARY:PETER MULVEY/ HAYWARD WILLIAMS/ DAVE RAMONT
To come together in a room\, to try to make music come alive\, for real\, for right now\, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me.” ” \nHayward grew up with a guitar in his hands\, performing from an early age in cafés\, bars\, and eventually rock clubs throughout his home state of Wisconsin and around the Midwest. A high school ‘Battle of the Bands’ champion\, the textbook lonely college kid making dinner dates with his guitar\, Williams took the well-worn suburban route to musical accomplishment: he hit the ground running with a ’64 Gibson that his mother bought at a garage sale\, listened hard to everything from the Beatles to Buckley\, and somewhere along the way began to write the tunes that would become his own voice. \n“Looking at the bespectacled youth peering out from the album bio\, you would never expect the smoky authoritative voice that swells from Cotton Bell. But maybe Williams’ appearance belies his age\, this being the Milwaukee singer-songwriter’s third full length album. Williams’ is the voice of maturity and restraint\, and by voice I mean not only his deep\, resonant singing\, but his approach\, attitude\, songwriting – the whole deal. Full of gentle\, tender songs beautifully recorded\, Cotton Bell presents nothing groundbreaking or startling. But the deeper you listen\, the further you appreciate those sounds and songs. Dan McMahon’s guitar and pedal steel and dobro are consistently grace full and as a co-producer\, he’s clearly a crucial ingredient to the impact of Cotton Bell. Strings and harmonies flesh out the songs beautifully throughout – Third track in ‘Mockingbird’ is a great example\,just gorgeous to listen to\, a breathtaking guitar solo\, strings and harmonies swelling and subsiding\, and Williams’ vocal melody glowing throughout.”  Rhythms Magazine. (Australia) \nDave Ramont– “rootsrock\, twangslop\, americana with muddy feet”.  The Austin Chronicle said “The world could always use another quality singer-songwriter with meaty lyrics\, gritty vocals and a tight back-up band.”\nCall it Americana\, roots-pop\, folk-slop\, whatever- Dave aims to spread these songs around like a thin layer of grease on a cast iron skillet. And when no one’s looking he’ll likely kick something down the street…\nSEE special holiday show post \n

DESCRIPTION:Hayward grew up with a guitar in his hands\, performing from an early age in cafés\, bars\, and eventually rock clubs throughout his home state of Wisconsin and around the Midwest. \nRhythms Magazine. (Australia)\n“Looking at the bespectacled youth peering out from the album bio\, you would never expect the smoky authoritative voice that swells from Cotton Bell. Strings and harmonies flesh out the songs beautifully throughout – Third track in ‘Mockingbird’ is a great example\,just gorgeous to listen to\, a breathtaking guitar solo\, strings and harmonies swelling and subsiding\, and Williams’ vocal melody glowing throughout.”\nMike Kuntz opens.\nReservations and prompt arrivals urged.  Hayward’s shows have been known to sell out.

SUMMARY:ED HALL/ JIM OHLSCHMIDT
DESCRIPTION:Ed Hall is an instrumental fingerstyle guitarist and banjo player. His performances are lively and humorous as well as instrumentally astounding. Ed’s approach to fingerstyle guitar has always been to try to arrange pieces for guitar that are not typically played on one guitar\, difficult pieces\, arranged as accurately as possible by ear. Instrumentals like The William Tell Overture\, Hoedown from Rodeo by Copland\, The Hungarian Rhapsody II by Liszt\, and The Theme From Peter Gunn are now part of the classic arrangements in his repertoire.  Ed’s early guitar influences were the Beatles\, John Denver\, Doc Watson\, Chet Atkins\, Stefan Grossman\, and Ed’s guitar hero Gamble Rogers.  The pinnacle so far in Ed’s career came in September 1991 when he won the coveted National Fingerpicking Championships at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, Kansas. Ed’s banjo style covers bluegrass and folk standards for the 5 string. \n“Lost Jim” Ohlschmidt is one of today’s foremost performers of Mississippi John Hurt’s music. In a newly published biography of Hurt\, Stefan Grossman commented “Jim really captures the feel\, sound and atmosphere of John’s music. The guitar playing is spot-on and the vocals are great – very warm and evocative.” Jim has recorded three CDs of John Hurt’s music to date\, and has also produced various solo recordings of original acoustic fingerstyle instrumentals and songs. Currently living in Eden Prairie\, Jim performs in the Twin Cities with his trio\, Lost Jim & the Boxcar Scholars. He also is lead guitarist and singer with a Madison-based electric blues band called the Velveetatones. Jim wrote and produced several musical segments for The Rhythm of the River\, a film produced by Dave Erickson documenting efforts to preserve the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway which was recently aired on Wisconsin Public Television.

SUMMARY:TOM WASELCHUK & JAMI LAMPKINS
DESCRIPTION:Tom Waselchuk & Jami Lampkins are the front singers and song-writers for The Dang-Its\, their Madison-based quintet performing “Honky Tonk\, Western Swing & Americana.” Their duet show is an unplugged performance of material drawn from the band’s repertoire\, leaning on their original songs and including some favorite covers collected over many years in the biz. \nJami Lampkins hails from Las Vegas NV\, where she learned the ropes of the music business playing with her family bluegrass band. The Lampkins Family Band toured regionally and shared the stage with major country and bluegrass acts. Jami is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, and bass) as well as a seasoned singer with a clear\, powerful voice. While testing the career waters in Nashville Jami was a finalist in USA Network’s “Nashville Star” competition\, a process that taught her that particular career path came with too high a price. (Editor’s note: This is not a case of sour grapes. Spend 5 minutes with Jami and you’ll know she harbors not a shred of the cut-throat drive needed to fight one’s way through the Nashville shark tank.) While in Nashville she lent her talents to several bands and found a mentor in the great country artist Gail Davies. With Ms. Davies’ help\, Jami was able to realize a life long ambition to perform on the Grand Ole Opry Stage. \nTom Waselchuk has been a professional musician in Madison for three decades playing an amazingly diverse number of music styles: Bluegrass (Stone Oak Bluegrass Band)\, Mainstream jazz (Full Count Jazz Band)\, Irish and World (Katzenjammers\, Rubato Brothers)\, and Rock & Roll (Marcy & the Highlights) Tom recently completed a ten year association playing Gypsy swing music with the national and international touring quartet\, Harmonious Wail. As a side man and multi-instrumentalist (guitar\, pedal steel guitar\, bass) Tom has worked with many of Madison’s top players and bands: Cris Plata\, Jackie Allen\, Doug Brown\, Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines to name a few. \nTom founded The Dang-Its in 1998. They are perennial honorees in Madison’s Isthmus Reader’s Choice Polls and Madison Magazine’s “Favorites.” The group has three independent CD releases: Don’t Mean Maybe (2000)\, Our Way (2006)\, and Daddy’s Cadillac (2010)\, and is working on its 4th recording. \n

SUMMARY:TOM FREUND/ JESS KLEIN
DESCRIPTION:Jess Klein   Tom Freund \nIt’s always a recipe for something special when two acclaimed songwriters share the road together. Having met for the first time in the Lower East Side of NYC nearly a decade ago\, the two soulful\, genre-bending troubadours have been eager to tour together since.  Klein explains\, “His music is comforting and inspiring to me… we both still play because music feeds our souls.  There’s a musical yin-yang and a personal kinship between Tom and I\, and those two things combined make for the best kinds of shows.” \nA troubadour whose talents have been lauded on the national and international scene for almost a decade\, Jess Klein writes songs that tell the story of the soul – from wrenching heartbreak to finding the strength to pick up and move on.  Weaving her own inimitable blend of folk\, soul and rock ‘n roll\, Klein’s music features spot-on\, speak-to-the-heart lyrics\, percussive guitar and a voice as sweet as it is strong. \nThe Rochester\, New York native picked up the acoustic guitar and started writing songs while living as a student abroad in Kingston\, Jamaica in her late teens. She returned to the US\, moved to Boston and released two albums on indie-giant Rykodisc:  2000’s Draw Them Near\,  [3.5 stars\, USA Today]\, launched Klein on a worldwide tour where her relaxed confidence and rootsy soulfulness wowed 70\,000 attendees at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.  Klein’s 2005 follow-up\, Strawberry Lover\, was given four stars by MOJO\, and the emotive and sensual title track was named one of the “Top Ten Sexiest Songs of the Moment” by the NY Daily News.  In 2006\, Klein released the blues and Motown influenced City Garden which was given an impressive five stars by MOJO Magazine and described by Roots Music UK as having “The best roots sound of any album heard this year.” \nKlein moved to her current home\, Austin\, TX in 2008\, inspiring her 2009 release\, Bound To Love.  Shining as Klein’s most confident work to date\, Bound to Love evoked the dusty roots of Texas songwriters and made her a household name in the Austin music world.  Bound to Love again took Klein across the globe\, including a tour of Ireland supporting folk legend Arlo Guthrie. \nHer newest album\, A Room of Your Own\, reflects a maturity and seize the day attitude influenced by her father’s inspiring battle with the disease ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease) which took his life in early 2011.  A Room of Your Own will be Jess’s first independent album in 14 years and will be released in April 2012. \nIt’s in the seemingly effortless ease with which he delivers his conversational lyrics and mellifluous melodies\, this natural magic that is at the heart of Tom Freund’s music. Though he’s well-schooled and widely-traveled in a variety of genres — from hearftelt folk to buoyant pop to boho jazz to straightforward rock ‘n’ roll\, and beyond — Freund ultimately comes across simply as a singer-songwriter with his own singularly distinctive and engaging voice. \nHis newest album\, The Edge of Venice is produced by John Alagia (John Mayer\, Jason Mraz\, Dave Matthews) and features of some of LA’s finest musicians joining him. The album comes in the wake of his latest EP “Fit To Screen” whose songs have been featured in this seasons “Parenthood” on NBC; and his latest full length “Collapsible Plans” which was produced by his musical cohort Ben Harper and hosted Jackson Browne as a special guest. The song “Collapsible Plans (Sugar) was seen performed live on “Last Call With Carson Daly” in January of 09: “I’ve always been a fan of Tom’s work\, and I thought that I had something to bring to Tom sonically that was maybe a place he hadn’t stepped into yet\,” Harper says. \nA sought-out standup bassist\, the talented\, versatile Freund plays most of the stringed instruments as well as piano on his albums. \nTom writes all his own material and his songs continue to be featured on such prime time TV shows as “Las Vegas” and “One Tree Hill” as well as such films as “Charlie Bartlett\,” and “12 Bucks.” Steven Spielberg’s SHOAH Foundation also used three of Tom’s compositions for their Giving Voice video. He also won a Telly Award for the music behind a National Public Service Announcement concerning child abuse. \n“Every year the mounting landfill of new releases that threatens to bury the working music journalists yields a few unexpected gems\, and Tom Freund is one of them.”\n– THE NEW YORK TIMES \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:KAREN SAVOCA & PETE HEITZMAN
DESCRIPTION:Acoustic soul music by Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman. \n“If she were a Native American\, her name would be Sings Like Two Birds.” -Greg Brown \nBorn in northern NJ\, the daughter of a big band singer\, Karen Savoca’s baby diary reads “20 months\, knows 6 songs.” She grew up singing\, dancing and harmonizing around a piano\, and by the age of five she was emceeing the school play. \nSavoca puts her heart into a song the way a great actor throws herself into a role\, charming audiences with a supple alto and a boundless range of expression. A gifted songwriter\, she draws you into her world of humor and compassion\, telling stories with grace and ease\, as though you’ve been invited to her table for supper. \nShe first met Pete Heitzman at a jam session and immediately recognized him as an ideal musical partner. Described by an Alaskan reviewer as “the aurora borealis of guitar\,” Heitzman’s transcendent playing is central to their sound. With a broad pallet of tones and textures\, he paints ideal landscapes for Savoca’s engaging songs. Years of leading an all-original\, dance-driven band imbued the duo with the power of a larger group. \n“Electrifying\, unique and always uplifting\, these improvisational performers have the fearlessness of a high wire act working without a net.” –Six String\, Columbus\, OH \nSavoca’s seventh solo release\, Promise\, was recorded in their 19th century church studio nestled deep in the hills of upstate NY. Promise is being lauded as her strongest collection of songs to date\, hitting #1 on Alberta’s CKUA chart and #25 on the Euro/Americana Chart. \n“There’s soul in the delicious grooves and phrasing\, and soul in the broader spiritual sense that floats out in her lyrical vision.”  –Edmonton Journal \n“Cleverly written and embracingly beautiful songs that have a beguiling way of changing and reconfiguring themselves like an aural kaleidoscope.” –Duluth News Tribune \n“Sparkling arrangements… joyous abandon .” –Dirty Linen \nWinners of seven SAMMY Awards. Notable appearances include The Today Show\, A Prairie Home Companion\, Mountain Stage\, Big Top Chautauqua\, The Vancouver\, Edmonton & Winnipeg Folk Festivals. SUMMARY:SUSAN SHORE & MICHAEL COCKRAM
DESCRIPTION:What began as a casual musical get-together grew into a partnership of like musical minds: Susan Shore and Michael Cockram merged their solo careers when they met in early 2010. Both are versatile multi-instrumentalists\, songwriters and singers. Shore and Cockram have an appetite for striking and unusual songs\, and they’ve built an eclectic repertoire that ranges from high lonesome traditional ballads to swing and contemporary folk songs. \nMichael Cockram is an Arkansas native who became a banjo player in his teens; a quick study and a virtuoso player\, he promptly added fiddle\, guitar and mandolin to his stable of instruments. Michael’s checkerboard life as architect\, professor\, freelance writer and artist led him around the world\, music remaining a constant companion. He returned to Arkansas in 2008 and now calls Fayetteville home. \nSusan Shore is an east coast transplant whose childhood home was filled with music. Raised by a big-band musician dad and an adventure-loving mother\, Susan was encouraged to play music\, and became a professional musician in the 1980’s (as half of Bell & Shore). Based in Iowa and touring widely\, the duo recorded two acclaimed albums. She relocated to Fayetteville in 1999. The title song of Michael’s CD “House of Stone” earned him first place in the Willamette Valley Folk Festival new song contest. Susan’s two albums with Bell and Shore met with critical acclaim\, including a 3 ½ star review in Rolling Stone; her two solo albums were also enthusiastically received\, “Book of Days” cited as one of the best folk/bluegrass albums of the year by Option Magazine.

SUMMARY:DON HAYNIE & SHERYL SAMUEL
DESCRIPTION:Since the release of their first independent album\, Life in the Circus\, Don & Sheryl have been taking their music far & wide across America\, playing concerts in an amazing range of venues. Their instrumentation– Sheryl’s use of percussion interwoven with Don’s six- and twelve-string guitars– gives their music a rhythmic drive rarely found in contemporary acoustic music: sometimes working as a compelling rhythm section supporting the vocal melodies and harmonies\, sometimes lending a delicate accent\, and often touching their music with a world beat flavor\, through the use of percussion instruments from many cultures. \nDon and Sheryl have learned to combine upbeat\, sometimes drivingly energetic songs with wistful\, thoughtful ballads\, for performances with grit as well as grace. Don’s songs can make you laugh\, cry\, or dance. As innovative and refreshing as this duo’s instrumentation is\, it is there mostly to support the real heart of their music\, the songs themselves\, and Don and Sheryl’s unique\, powerful vocal harmonies. \n“Pristine guitar playing . . . Seamless harmony . . . A sure instinct for lovely melodies\, a brilliant sense of narrative and storytelling\, and at times a wry wit . . . A treasure trove of potential hits.”   The Woodstock Times
