SUMMARY:STILL NO TOMATOES/ CHRIS HAISE
DESCRIPTION:These two acts will share the evening\, with Chris Haise starting. Ticket link follows bios. \nSTILL NO TOMATOES are a Hodgepop trio featuring Jeff Stehr\, Mike Lizzo and Mark Walczynski. They blend diverse musical enthusiasms with inventive instrumentation. From folk rock to one drop\, this eclectic ensemble connects the dots between genres\, illuminating and exploring the terrain between imagination and expectation. Their new three song EP\, Demo Listen Derby (2024) careens between the beautiful balladry of Warning Sign to the funky folk rock feel of the provocatively titled F@#king Old Men. \nPRESS…“… that night\, the band came across as triumphantly new. Perhaps it
is the orchestration that allowed for this impression. When was the last time you heard a ukulele and trombone duet? When they sang together\, their voices were intervallically close; the sound soft and certain. Lizzo played his baritone gently\, as if loudly would have been impolite. They took water from the fountain of diverse experience and dipped into a deep pool of genres. What to call it? Currently\, they describe their music as “Hodgepop”. This is accurate. Stehr takes generously from the songbook of his experience\, plays around with the hodgepodge he finds and writes music that ranges from the witty to the poetic. Despite the inpatience of its name\, Still No Tomatoes are ripe for the table.”— Jonathan Brodie\, Cream City Grub blog – \nMilwaukee based singer songwriter CHRIS HAISE leads the CHRIS HAISE BAND through a diverse repertoire of hook filled ballads and toe tappers. Mixing folk and rock\, Haise’s vocals have been described as Dylan meets Springsteen meets Petty\, while his lyrics have been described as “smart new songwriting” and “intense\, thoughtful songcraft”.
Sporting an indie rock feel with pop undertones Haise’s music will get stuck in your head for days. \nPRESS…“… The Chris Haise Band’s latest album\, “Busy People” (2024)\, released this week\, is a captivating blend of soulful melodies and introspective lyrics. With a mix of folk\, rock\, and Americana influences\, the band shines on this record\, anchored by previous singles “Bric-a-brac” and “I Don’t Listen to Love Songs.” On the title track\, Haise assumes the stature of a tenured songwriter\, reflecting on the world and the people that simply don’t have time to slow down for him or anyone. The piano takes center stage on much of this record\, with heartfelt ballads that achieve anthemic heights more often than not. “Busy People” is a record worth slowing down for.”— Alan Halas\, Breaking & Entering\, Milwaukee

SUMMARY:MAXIMIANO/ THE SPINE STEALERS
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS following bios:\nMAXIMINAO’s music is rarely about just one emotion\, moment\, or person. Their debut album\, “The Real Truth\,” instead explores the way that experience flows through periods of growth and change. The songs shimmer\, echo\, and glide through tales of memory and identity that Piet Levy of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called “one of the most piercing and emotionally resonant collections of songs from a Milwaukee artist of the year… a towering achievement.” With this ringing endorsement\, The Journal Sentinel ranked “The Real Truth” as the 3rd Best Milwaukee Album of 2024.\nThe album\, which Maximiano wrote\, produced\, arranged\, recorded\, and mixed\, is adorned with a variety of sounds; piano\, pedal steel\, flute\, clarinet\, and more elevate the americana-folk core. With an all-star band of Milwaukee musicians (including members of Field Report\, PHOX\, Old Pup\, and Ellie Jackson)\, the vulnerable songs swell to cathartic\, indie-rock peaks. Riding the waves of this folkestra\, Maximiano sings tenderly but urgently about taking chances\, missed opportunities\, and reevaluating memories. The result is a flowing\, expressive sound that\, according to Erin Wolf\, music director at 88.9 Radio Milwaukee\, “captures the beauty that often comes from the newfound wisdom accrued in your stumbling\, youngest years.”“The Real Truth” is a lush\, courageous\, and ambitious first record from an artist poised to take up the lineage of earnest\, folk-influenced singer-songwriters. Though their music will appeal to fans of Adrianne Lenker\, Songs:Ohia\, Sufjan Stevens\, and Elliott Smith\, the real truth is that there is no one quite like Maximiano.\n\nTHE SPINE STEALERS are a two-gal duo making “spooky folk” influenced by the north-wood Wisconsin pines\, 24/7 truck stop diners\, heartbreak and dark lakes. Kate and Emma started learning guitar together around bonfires in their shared hometown during the height of the pandemic\, soon writing songs inspired by lonesome winters\, the heartaches of nostalgia and broken ideas of love. The duo started frequenting open mics in July of 2022\, which led them to a whirlwind first year as performers. It began with opening for Dead Horses at Madison’s Majestic Theater for Folk Fest 2023\, then winning the 2023 Blue Ox Music Festival Virtual Band Competition\, and releasing their first ever EP\, “River Teeth Tapes” in July\, 2023. 2024 brought the release of several singles\, a feature in DAYBREAK magazine\, and most proudly\, the recording of their debut album “If the Sky Falls\, Beyond the Sidewalks”\, released in October\, 2024.

SUMMARY:CHRISTINE LAVIN
DESCRIPTION:Witty\, songwriter-storyteller with a flair for the creative\, the dramatic\, and the humorous. \n“CHRISTINE LAVIN  is the Folk World’s long reigning Queen of the Intelligently Absurd. The title of one of her earlier albums\, “I Don’t Make This Stuff Up\, I just Make it Rhyme” says it all. She has an eye for the ironic and the absurd in the news and everyday life\, and puts it into song. She dresses it all up in skillful guitar work\, electronic loops and wonderful gimmicks like baton twirling. Ya gotta love her.”  -NJ Morristown Patch \nBuy tickets following bio. \nChristine started her professional life as a waitress/bread baker at the Caffe Lena in SaratogaSprings\, NY in 1975 where she met Dave Van Ronk who encouraged her to study guitar with him in NYC. She took his advice and is now a singer/songwriter/guitarist/recording artist/author/videographer based in New York City. \n\n\n\n\nHer latest solo album\, her 25th\, ON MY WAY TO HOOTERVILLE\, includes 10 new songs and one re-worked song\, “Ramblin’ Waltz\,” a re-telling of her time in 1975 when she was an entourage driver for the first week of Bob Dylan’s iconic “Rolling Thunder Revue” tour.\n\nIn 2023 Christine released “THE SEASONS PROJECT\,” an 80-song seasonal compilation that features the work of 63 American\, Canadian\, British\, and Irish singer/songwriters\, along with 480 digital pages of information on all the artists. She hopes it will introduce folklorists and music historians of the future to true musical artists of the last part of the 20th century and first part of the 21st century\, not just the ones who make the most money.\n\nIn 2024 she is completing her 26th solo album\, DRUM SCHOOL DROPOUT\, which she hopes to release in the fall.\n\nIn February 2024 nine of Christine’s songs appeared in the off-Broadway musical “InunDATED” sung by Broadway star Sierra Boggess. “inunDATED” is written by playwright Alice Scovell.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn September 2019 Christine spent a month at the artist retreat Yaddo in Saratoga Springs. Three of the songs she wrote there are included on her latest HOOTERVILLE album. In April 2019 she was inducted into the Rochester\, NY Music Hall of Fame along with Al Jardine of The Beach Boys. She received a 2012 Nightlife Award given annually to the best concert and cabaret performers in New York City. In November 2011\, her book COLD PIZZA FOR BREAKFAST: A MEM-WHA?? (Tell Me Press\, New Haven) won the 43rd Annual ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for excellence in writing about music. Christine has also won five ASCAP Composer Awards\, The Kate Wolf Memorial Award\, and her album Good Thing He Can’t Read My Mind won Album of The Year from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors.\n\nShe has produced ten compilations\, and so far\, these compilations have showcased songs of 100 songwriters whose work she admires. The food-themed compilation\, ONE MEAT BALL\, includes a 96-page cook booklet that Christine edited — songs and recipes by Pete Seeger\, Tom Paxton\, Dave Van Ronk\, and many more\, including a surprise appearance by international — and now late — gigastar Dame Edna\, Christine’s idol (sigh).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor four years she hosted “Slipped Disks” on XM satellite radio\, playing CDs slipped to her backstage by compatriots\, and was occasion guest host for City Folk Sunday Supper on WFUV-FM at Fordham University. She also writes freelance for various publications (The Washington Post\, Huffington Post\, St. Petersburg Times\, Performing Songwriter\, and Delta “Sky” Magazine). Her song AMOEBA HOP is a science/music book by illustrator Betsy Franco Feeney (Puddle Jump Press)\, receiving the stamp of approval from The International Society of Protistologists\, and a “Best Book Award” from The American Association for The Advancement of Science.\n\nTHE PLUTO FILES: THE RISE AND FALL OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE PLANET (W.W. Norton) by Neil deGrasse Tyson\, head of the Hayden Planetarium in NYC\, includes the complete lyrics to Christine’s song “Planet X\,” which details Pluto’s history and planetary status debate in rhyme. Neil included Christine in a live concert event at The Beacon Theater in NYC\, “Comedians & Astronomers\,” and his voice is on that recording\, her 23rd album\, SPAGHETTIFICATION.\n\nChristine performs concerts all over the US\, Canada\, and points beyond (Australia\, Germany\, Israel)\, often hosting knitting circles and Downton Abbey-style napkin folding backstage at each show. Songs of hers have been performed by artists as diverse as Broadway stars Betty Buckley\, Sutton Foster\, Karen Ziemba\, Klea Blackhurst\, cabaret divas Andrea Marcovicci. Barbara Brussell\, and Colleen McHugh\, the a cappella Dartmouth Decibelles\, and The Accidentals\, winners of the National Harmony Sweepstakes Championship.\n\nOn A Winter’s Night\, her first seasonal compilation project\, (20 artists) became a four-artist national tour that first hit the road back in January 1991 and was a five-artist tour that hit the road November 2019\, including Christine\, Cliff Eberhardt\, Patty Larkin\, Cheryl Wheeler\, and John Gorka — only to be abruptly sidelined by the pandemic on March 12\, 2020.\n\nLATEST PROJECTS: Christine started creating videos for her songs in 2011\, and now creates them for other artists (including Michael Feinstein\, Noel Paul Stookey\, Janis Ian\, Judy Collins\, Craig Werth\, Julie Gold\, David Ippolito\, and others).\n\nEven more at www.christinelavin.com

SUMMARY:SARAH MORRIS/ KELLEY SMITH
DESCRIPTION:A special evening shared by 2 Minnesota songwriters: ticket link follows bios. \nSARAH MORRIS ‘s endearingly honest\, expertly penned songs encourage audiences to pull away from the big picture and get caught up in the magic of our everyday minutia\, the rainy day ache in her sunlit voice granting us permission to escape into stories at once hauntingly familiar and uniquely her own. \nIn 2016\, Sarah was a top four finalist in the NewSong Music Contest at Lincoln Center in New York City\, 2nd place winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Competition at MerleFest in Wilkesboro\, NC\, and an Americana semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. In 2018\, she went on to win the Kerrville New Folk Competition\, collecting an honorable mention at the Telluride Troubadour contest along the way.  More recently\, Sarah was named Midwest Country Music Organization’s Songwriter of the Year for the third time. \nIn 2023\, Sarah released her 5th album of originals\, ‘Here’s To You’\, which was recently awarded ‘Album of the Year’ by the Midwest Country Music Organization. \nProduced by Dave Mehling\, Dave Franklin of The Big Takeover said of Here’s To You\, \n“It’s a triumph. An album of space and restraint\, any note played\, every word uttered feels perfectly and purposely placed. The album is a beautiful blend of groove and grace\, intimacy and entertainment\, fun\, and feeling. What more could you ask for? What indeed?” \n“Rootsy singer Sarah Morris offers a Norah Jones-like approach to Americana\, smoothing overs its rough edges with a butter-velvety voice and an intimate songwriting style.”  Chris Riemenschneider\, Star Tribune. \nInclined toward the intimacy of live performance\, Sarah spends a remarkable amount of time on stage. \nDeeply committed to the Twin Cities’ life-giving music community\, Morris hosted an online interview program called\, “Hey\, I Miss You\,” to amplify the work of her peers\, and currently can be found online collaborating with musicians for a Youtube series of under-rehearsed cover songs filmed in her laurel green bathroom. \nAs a writer\, lover\, mother\, and witness\, Morris invites us to join her in missing the forest for the trees\, with songs that count and celebrate the glorious details of our messy\, magical\, everyday lives. \nFolksinger-songwriter KELLEY SMITH is a hopeless romantic who fancies old poetry and grandpa sweaters. All at once whimsical and haunting\, Smith delivers deeply affecting lyrics with wry charm and a time traveler’s voice. Prone to melancholy and daydreaming\, Kelley spent her childhood roaming the woods of Minnesota and singing to forest animals. To this day\, her longing for that landscape runs deep and seems to find its way into her songs in one way or another. \nRaised by musicians\, Smith always had music in her bones\, but it wasn’t until she was 40 and a mother of four that her first record\, Moon Child (2022)\, came to be. As an insomniac\, she wrote this first batch of songs by moonlight. They evoke a sense of belonging\, juxtaposed with escapism\, as she croons about long-term love\, grief\, and her draw to the night sky. ”Her authentic\, rootsy sound\, falling somewhere between country\, folk\, bluegrass and old-time music\, is a pitch-perfect vehicle for the themes she explores…” – Adventures in Americana \nSince 2022\, Kelley has been honored to share stages with folks such as Charlie Parr\, Kelly Hunt\, Wild Horses\, Dave Simonett\, Alan Sparhawk\, Stephen Wilson Jr.\, The Weary Ramblers\, and Drew Peterson. Most often performing solo or as a duo\, Smith interprets old folk songs on guitar and banjo\, in addition to her original music. \n“Her ability to close the distance from the stage to your ears\, while portioning out strong emotions\, keeps you constantly leaning in more and more.” – Smouse In The House \n”[Smith] has been making waves in the local folk and Americana scene. Her rustic sound\, combined with relatable gut-punchy lyrics has been resonating with audiences up north and beyond.” – Southern Minn Scene \n”…armed only with her guitar and a spine-tingling voice\, you couldn’t tell she’s only been at this a couple years. Smith transported the room into a realm of enchantment both beautiful and sorrowful. With deeply affecting lyrics and haunting melodies\, Smith shared stories we could all relate to. Her solo acoustic set created an atmosphere of intimacy and vulnerability\, allowing the audience to connect on a deep and personal level..” – Adventures in Americana

SUMMARY:MY POLITIC
DESCRIPTION:Always happy when Kaston reaches out to ask if they can play here again- check out this duo. \nMY POLITIC is a Folk/Americana duo consisting of Kaston Guffey and Nick Pankey\, who grew up together in Ozark MO and started My Politic around the age of 15. Kaston writes character driven story songs and Nick adds sibling-like harmony to create a unique sound that is totally their own. \nMore bio follows ticket link: \n\n \n \n \n \nShort-Sighted People in Power “They are inspired\, brave and brilliant songs\, remarkably comprehensive but never preachy or ponderous. It’s perfect for this American moment. Rendered tenderly with close harmonies throughout\, it evoked the sound of Don Henley and Glenn Frey singing Randy Newman songs. It’s subversive\, but also soulfully charming.” – Paul Zollo – American Songwriter \nInspired by artists like John Prine\, Woody Guthrie\, Randy Newman\, Bob Dylan\, Patty Griffin\, Nina Simone\, Simon & Garfunkel classic country and so much else\, My Politic has recorded 9 albums to date and have released 3 of those since moving to Nashville 7 years ago: “Anchor” (2015) “12 Kinds of Lost” (2017) and “Short-Sighted People In Power” (released 10/30/2020)\, which is a collection of songs written and recorded between March and August of 2020 hyper-focused on politics & current affairs. The album has been featured 3 times in American Songwriter. \nTheir latest is Missouri Folklore: Songs and Stories from Home. As Guffey says\, “There are songs about judgment\, existentialism\, forgiveness\, love\, death\, growing\, and healing. It’s a lot of material focused on the nuance and mundanity\, in some sense\, of being a person”. \nGuffey and Pankey’s engaging slice-of-life storytelling\, expertly-crafted characters & sibling-like harmony\, shape a collection of songs that are as intimate and engaging as they are unforgettable. \n“…it might come off as a rootsy\, country-folk fusion but its importance transcends such a sonic description. It comes from the same disenfranchised place which spawned punk\, hip-hop\, even rock and roll itself\, and any and all movements born of being outside\, forgotten\, exploited\, ignored and used by those in power.” – Dave Franklin – Dancing About Architecture \n

SUMMARY:BEATS WORKIN'
DESCRIPTION:“Though not unique it is no less true that ‘BEATS WORKIN’ is the outgrowth of a series of jam sessions attended by 5 guys who love traditional bluegrass music\, while believing that the genre is not set in stone\, and that through the joy of making music\, tasteful and creative contributions are waiting to be discovered (We think Bill would be proud!). As we each looked at the other 4 and concluded those guys are near-irreplaceable\, the transition to a band seemed quite natural.” \nBand bio follows ticket link: \n\n \n \n \n \nTHE BAND: \n\nVIKTOR BRUSUBARDIS– bass\, vocals\nViktor began performing on the bass in the spring of 2021\, joining members ofChicken Wire Empire\, The Milbillies\, and co-founding the Milwaukee bluegrass band “SugarBush”. He has shared the stage with artists Dead Horses\, Chicken Wire Empire\, Billy Bronsted (Billy Bronsted and the Bluegrass Buddies)\, Mike Mangione (Mike Mangione and the Kin)\, and others. Viktor enjoys exploring different genres including Jazz\, Classical\, Bluegrass\, Folk\, Americana\, and Old Time Music. While Viktor is not playing the bass he performs as a classical cellist in Milwaukee’s Festival City Symphony and teaches cello in the Milwaukee YouthSymphony Orchestra’s Progressions program. During his summers he participates in festivalssuch as the Musiques et Vignes en Confluence festival in the Loire Valley of France\, the Gott istgut festival in Struppen Germany\, Latvian Song and Dance Festivals in Canada and the United\nStates\, and other local festivals. Currently\, Viktor regularly performs with groups Beats Workin’\,\nSugar Bush\, Milwaukee Hotclub\, and Cream City Hotclub.\n\nKEN FINKEL Banjo and vocals\nKen  got involved in Bluegrass while at the University of Rochester (NY)\, Largely self-taught\, he made his way to Cincinnati where he met Dede Wyland and Jim Price through mutual friends. During a gig in Chicago\, they came down along with Peter Knupfer and Dan Crownover. Turned out they formed Grass\, Food\, and Lodging. In their five years together\, they built a strong regional following and gained national recognition\, appearing on the Prairie Home Companion\, and many prestigious festivals around the country. Following GF&L\, Ken had his own booking agency\,\nrepresenting Bluegrass\, Roots\, Blues\, and Irish musicians and doing event booking and stage management- Summerfest\, Bastillle Days\, etc. A long career in the software industry followed. The passion for Bluegrass was reignited when GF&L had reunions in 2013 and 2015.\n\nPETER ROLLER- Dobro\nPeter is a longtime performer and composer of fingerstyle and slide guitar music. In the ‘80s he was main accompanist for 1st generation bluesman Yank Rachell\, acting as Producer and playing guitar on his Grammy-nominated Blues Mandolin Man album. In the ‘90’s Roller’s original lap slide instrumental Rancho Mirage was included on the popular compilation Masters of Acoustic Guitar\, while he also performed and recorded with dance band Paul Cebar & the Milwaukeeans\, gospel quartet The Masonic Wonders\, and Violent Femmes bassist Brian Richie. After retiring as Professor Emeritus of Music from Alverno College\, Roller returned to his early love for Bluegrass and old-time Country Dobro\, writing adventuresome pieces and performing with eclectic band The Resonators along with Beats Workin.’\n\n\nJOHN STINEMAN- Mandolin\, vocals\nGrowing up in Wabash\, IN \, John was introduced to Bluegrass music by the many people who migrated from Appalachia for employment. Upon witnessing an exceptional flat picker in the local music store he decided he could “do that “\, bought a guitar and commenced. After refining his musicianship and moving to Florida he founded The Kitchen\nTable Boys\, his first success in music .He eventually became a member of Big Timber Bluegrass\, a long time Orlando based band that had been founded by Chubby Anthony\, who had fiddled with the Stanley Brothers\, and later featured frequent guest appearances by Chubby Wise\, legendary fiddler with Bill Monroe in the late 1940’s. Upon moving to Asheville \, NC in 2001  he co-founded One Leg Up\, a five piece swing ensemble that toured the Southeast until 2019.\nDuring the pandemic John relocated to Northern Illinois and has returned to playing Bluegrass music\, concentrating on mandolin\, as a member of Beats Workin.’\n\nJERRY WICENTOWSKI– Guitar\, lead vocals\nAs a teenager growing up in New York City\, Jerry was inspired to sing Bluegrass music by the performances of first-generation artists. His high clear voice carries on the tradition of the pioneers of Bluegrass\, but his singing is far from a pale imitation or carbon copy of those early greats. Jerry’s performances have uniqueness\, depth of feeling\, and most important\, respect and reverence for the music. He revisited the material of one of his early inspirations in his most recent CD tribute to Mac Wiseman entitled\, ‘Thanks\, Mac!’. Mac himself praised Jerry’s work saying\, “Jerry\, I’m very flattered by your interpretation of my material and I think it’s a wonderful piece of work! I heartily endorse it\, and I’m very pleased that you’re carrying on my legacy.” In October 2019\, just prior the pandemic\, Jerry featured material from his recording on the stage of the historic Station Inn in Nashville.

SUMMARY:KATIE DAHL/ GRACE MORRISON
DESCRIPTION:Bios follow ticket link: \n\n \n \n \n \nKATIE DAHL \n\n\n“Katie Dahl’s songs aren’t just melodies and words\, they’re journeys that are firmly grounded in a sense of place—beautiful\, real landscapes that help you feel places that you may have never been before. That’s the very best kind of songwriting.”\n—Dar Williams \n“Razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty\, soulful voice.”— American Songwriter \n\n\n\n\nClear-eyed and tough-minded\, songwriter/playwright Katie Dahl is known for her smart songs\, wry wit\, and wise spirit. A small-town celebrity on the Wisconsin peninsula where her family has lived for 175 years\, Katie is also an internationally touring\, radio-charting artist who “delivers razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty\, soulful voice” (American Songwriter). In live shows that are both courageously honest and devilishly funny\, Katie dives deep into questions of land and love\, family and body image\, grief and joy. “In unsettled times\,” says Peter Mulvey\, “Katie Dahl brings us a grounded spirit.” \nKatie’s five albums of original songs showcase her creamy alto\, abiding love of the land\, and trademark humor\, as well as her unflinching vulnerability. Her recent work finds her exploring deeper territory than ever before\, from anxiety to body image to the challenges of growing up queer in an evangelical church. Richly steeped in the American songwriting tradition\, Katie navigates the muddy waters between the personal\, public\, and political with tenderness and dexterity. \nIn 2024\, Katie was named a Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Finalist\, as well as “Most Wanted to Return” at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist Showcase. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes\, “Katie Dahl . . . combine[s] old-fashioned populism\, an abiding love of the land and wickedly smart love songs\, all delivered in a rich and expressive alto.” \n\n\nGRACE MORRISON“Singer-songwriter Grace Morrison reflects her Cape Cod roots. Equal parts rugged\, powerful\, and breathtakingly beautiful Grace has carved out a sound all her own: Saltwater Country.  Her brand of Americana-infused with 90’s pop  hooks will leave you basking in the sun while her lyrics pull you into deeper waters.” \n“Her voice smacks of Jewel\, and her style\, cadence\, song structure is every inch from the school of Joan Osborne\, Lisa Loeb\, Natalie Merchant. It’s uncanny.” — Lauren Daly Boston Globe \nSome of you may have seen Grace here last year with Radoslav Lorkovic.

SUMMARY:CAROLINE COTTER
DESCRIPTION:CAROLINE COTTER‘s sunlit songs honor the countless ways of being human. With her honeyed voice and disarmingly honest lyrics\, Cotter sings about connection\, nostalgia\, gratitude\, loss and wanderlust. Lyrics like\, “Find me somewhere out on the road / Take me into your heart and into your home\,” make perfect sense from a touring artist who has played over 1000 shows in 45 states and 16 countries. She has performed at churches\, art galleries\, barns\, yoga studios\, punk bars\, Parisian living rooms and even a schooner off the coast of Maine. Everywhere she goes\, her oracular songs elicit emotion and spark insight—medicine for our collective longing. \nGrowing up in Rhode Island\, Cotter played piano and listened to records by luminaries like The Beatles\, The Beach Boys\, The Carpenters and Bob Dylan. She spent her early twenties in Spain\, Thailand and India; studying yoga and meditation; sleeping on train station floors; washing clothes in the sink; and witnessing the innumerable ways people live. Walking the Camino de Santiago\, a pilgrim’s trail across northern Spain\, she felt “wildly alive. Waking with the sun in the east and walking west each day\, I felt free yet full-of-purpose” —a feeling she would later recognize and reclaim as a touring musician. \nAs a songwriter\, Cotter waits for the wellspring of emotion to arise and then wrings her experience out into rhyming couplets. The process typically starts with nostalgia or longing—wondering about the way things were or the way things could be. She’s endlessly questioning existence\, spinning and carding her worries\, hopes\, and joys into the fabric of her songs. Cotter has released three records\, Dreaming as I Do (2015)\, Home on the River (2018) and Gently as I Go (2023). Under the Radar magazine says her music\, “brings forth an abiding sense of warmth and welcome\, offering an uplifting reminder to make the most of every moment.” \nCotter’s songs move effortlessly from the grand to the granular. Take “Coming Your Way\,” a traveler’s anthem about the people who keep her afloat by opening their hearts and homes. Or “The Year of the Wrecking Ball\,” in which the narrator revisits her childhood home and wrestles with the dissolution of her family and sense of continuity. Then there’s “Gone Away\,” a hymn for the lost and downtrodden—or anyone needing to be called back to their life’s purpose. With the precision of an analog photographer\, Cotter adjusts the aperture of her attention to move between the particular and universal qualities of our lives. \nCotter has performed at the Freshgrass Festival (North Adams\, MA)\, Rocky Mountain Folk Fest (Lyons\, CO)\, Ossipee Music Festival (Ossipee\, NH)\, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (Hillsdale\, NY)\, Rockwood Music Hall (New York\, NY)\, Isis Music Hall (Asheville\, NC)\, The Alberta Rose Theatre (Portland\, OR)\, Swallow Hill (Denver\, CO) and more. She won the Maine Songwriters Association Contest and was a finalist at the Freshgrass and Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Songwriting Competitions. When not living nomadically\, Cotter resides on the coast of Maine.

SUMMARY:KRAY VAN KIRK
DESCRIPTION:This show was rescheduled from August 31\, 2024.  BUY  tickets following bio. \nA finger-style guitarist with a precise baritone\, KRAY VAN KIRK has a Ph.D. from the University of Alaska. After five years of touring\, he thought the sciences might be a bit more secure than playing music. But he wrote better songs than statistical models\, and he set out again. “We are driven by myth and the seasons of the heart\,” he says. “Everyone\, absolutely everyone\, of any gender\, identity\, orientation\, ethnicity or anything else\, should know that they are not alone but are on the Hero’s Journey.” \nWhen he reached Scotland and the Fringe Festival\, the Daily Fringe Review wrote\, “The evening’s act was Kray Van Kirk\, whose 12-string guitar and soaring vocals were spellbinding; the Alaskan singer-songwriter\, in his Edinburgh debut\, was not the reason I arrived early\, but was certainly why I stayed late.” \nOf this charming\, quixotic and eclectic performer\, the Borderline Folk Club in New York wrote that Van Kirk was “what every singer-songwriter should aspire to.” \n“Every time I play cuts off The Midnight Commander\, listeners ask ‘Who’s that?’ It’s Kray Van Kirk and there’s none like him.” – Auntmama ‘Sunday Folks’ DJ\, KBCS Seattle\, WA

SUMMARY:CHERYL WHEELER w/ special guest KENNY WHITE- sold out
DESCRIPTION:Ticket link follows bios. \nCHERYL WHEELER It has always seemed as if there were two Cheryl Wheelers\, with fans of the New England songwriter relishing watching the two tussle for control of the mic. There is poet-Cheryl\, writer of some of the prettiest\, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin\, comic-Cheryl\, a militant trend defier and savagely funny social critic. The result is a delightful contrast between poet and comic. \nAs the late Scott Alarik wrote\, “Wheeler emerges as a gifted and open-hearted songwriter approaching the sure summit of her craft. Her abiding faith in her audience’s ability to find their own life reflected in the sweet spaces of her songs reveals an artist comfortably wearing the austere genius that defines folk music’s best traditions.” \nKENNY WHITE opens the show and then accompanies Cheryl for her set. \nHailed by reviewers from the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicle for his “thrilling” and “unique” piano playing\, Kenny is a talented singer-songwriter and a successful NYC-based record producer. He has written\, performed\, and produced music for hundreds of TV and radio commercials as well as film soundtracks\, and has toured with stars like Judy Collins\, Stephen Stills and Tom Jones\, among others. \nSnapshots of human condition\, from heartwarming to humorous; astonishingly gifted pianist who finds a hook at the end of a long phrase. “Kenny has earned a place among my favorite singer/songwriters. A true wordsmith and musician who reveals a fine sense of humor as well.” – David Crosby \n\n \n \n \n \n
