SUMMARY:SAM LLANAS
DESCRIPTION:Sam Llanas is a singer\, acoustic guitarist\, and songwriter in several rock and roots rock bands active from the 1980s to the 2000s\, including the BoDeans and Absinthe. Sam is known for his unusual and distinctive voice. \nCareer\nLlanas was one of the founding members of the roots rock band the BoDeans\, which he formed with high school friend Kurt Neumann in Waukesha\, Wisconsin. In 1985\, after adding Guy Hoffman (drums) in 1984 and Bob Griffin (bass)\, the quartet signed a contract with Slash/Warner Records and shortened their name to the BoDeans. \nUnder the guidance of producer T-Bone Burnett\, they entered Hollywood’s Sunset Sound Factory in October to record their first album. The critically-acclaimed debut Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams was released in 1986. In the late 1980s and early 1990s\, the band had several singles in the top 40 “mainstream rock” charts. In the mid-1990s\, the band had two top 10 songs in the “Adult contemporary” charts. \nThe BoDeans took some time off in the late 1990s so Neumann and Llanas could record solo albums. Llanas founded Absinthe\, with the help of Milwaukee musicians Jim Eannelli (guitars and bass) and Guy Hoffman (formerly of Oil Tasters and Violent Femmes\, currently of Radio Romeo). They have released one album\, 1998’s A Good Day To Die. In 2011 Sam Llanas released 4 A.M. (The Way Home) and left the BoDeans to pursue his Solo career. \nAs always\, please call to reserve seats.

SUMMARY:DEVIL IN THE OUTHOUSE
DESCRIPTION:This blurb from the Devil themself: \nWho: Devil in the Outhouse- Looper (Brian Lucas)\, Scott (McCormick)\, Greg (Valde)\, & Sven (Ollie)\, will be offering their traditional holiday concert – which is unlikely to include much holiday music. However\, there will be folk\, blues\, comedy and bathroom services available. The show starts at 8:00\, but we encourage you to come early and eat dinner at the Café Carpe. The food is great and we certainly don’t want Kitty and Bill to go out of business. Who else would let us play in such a nice music room? \nWhy: So you can hear Sven play amazing slide guitar & Scott play a funky blues accordion\, so Greg can pretend he’s in a band\, so you can watch Looper fantasize about women in the audience while drinking bourbon…but mostly so you can escape from your dysfunctional family during the holidays.

SUMMARY:CHAD ELLIOTT with BONITA CROWE has been cancelled/ OPEN STAGE in its place
DESCRIPTION:due to weather.  Chad and Bonita were coming from the Twin Cities\, which has had 13 inches of snow by Thursday afternoon.   We are turning the evening into an open stage instead. \n  \nChad Elliott \n“Equal parts Townes Van Zant and Woody Guthrie. A remarkably competent finger style guitarist and arguably one of new folk’s most gifted new lyricists.” \nAveraging over 100 shows per year\, Chad Elliott has been on the road for more than a decade performing a blend of roots\, blues and folk music. He has played across the country and has been lauded as a modern-day troubadour. \nElliott has released an astonishing 18 full-length albums since he began his songwriting career. The most notable being his latest studio album\, “Redemption Man\,” released in 2009. Elliott worked with producer and guitarist Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams\, Greg Brown) on this album to achieve its distinctive electrified roots sound. It also features Pieta Brown on the song\, “Same\, Old Way\,” which was the 2009 Woody Guthrie Festival song contest winner as well as a 3rd place winner in the 2009 International Songwriting Contest for the Americana category. Two other songs on this album\, “Redemption Man\,” and “Illinois\,” won Elliott a new folk finalist spot in the 2008 Grassy Hill Kerrville Folk Festival. \nThere’s something in that Iowa soil- (Greg Brown\, Dave Moore\, Bo Ramsey\, the Pines) \nAbove all the Iowa songwriter’s music slips stories about life as he has experienced it through living with the homeless\, love\, divorce\, fatherhood and discovering inspiration in the modern world. \nChad will be accompanied by vocalist Bonita Crowe. Hear them here.

SUMMARY:Lamplighter- PETER MULVEY/ BIRDS OF CHICAGO/ DAVID GOODRICH
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT Read Lamplighter post regarding these shows. \nPeter Mulvey \nBirds of Chicago is a collective based around JT Nero and Allison Russell. Whether touring as a duo or with the full family band\, Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music. \nFor several years Russell and Nero’s respective bands\, Po’ Girl (Vancouver\, BC) and JT and the Clouds (Chicago\, IL)\, have collaborated extensively\, but on 2011’s Mountains/Forests\, released under the JT Nero banner\, they tapped into the true\, bewitching power of their voices together on an entire record. It also featured the full cast of characters that would round out the Birds of Chicago ensemble — the Clouds and Michelle McGrath\, the luminous singer and picker from the hidden hills of Southeast Ohio. \nNero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones\, is a fine thing. Not too perfect\, not at all saccharine\, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel\, street corner doo-wop\, and classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar\, it’s haunting. Fired by the band\, it’s a full tilt revival. \nDavid Goodrich Known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, newwave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\, David “Goody” Goodrich continues to hone a sound all his own. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. Fans of Pat Metheny\, Bill Frisell\, and Ry Cooder will find DUST OF MANY HORSES the perfect companion.

SUMMARY:Lamplighter- REDBIRD FRIDAY SHOW SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT Read Lamplighter post regarding these shows. \nOUISEAU ROUGE \nRedbird is a loose affliction of four fine talents\, the ubiquitous Peter Mulvey\, Jeffrey Foucault\, Kris Delmhorst\, and David Goodrich– all imaginative instrumentalists and singers- who haunt the Cafe Carpe every December. They audially and audaciously and admirably pen a love letter to the body of American song- traditional tunes\, old jazz standards\, country songs\, and things that blur the line between those forms\, and sometimes slur their lines between songs as they spew camaraderie\, joy\, and the magic of live performance.

SUMMARY:Lamplighter: PETER MULVEY/ CLAUDIA SCHMIDT/ RALSTON BOWLES/ DAYNA KURTZ
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT See Lamplighter post regarding these shows. \nAnother stellar gathering of some very bright stars. \nPeter Mulvey the good stuff just pours out of him. \nClaudia Schmidt\n“To say that Schmidt is simply a performer with a talent to entertain would be a miscarriage of understatement. Schmidt takes her audiences into her world as easily as the child who discovers the endless universes that exist in a cardboard box. \nFrom lying on sandy beaches under an endless barrage of northern lights\, to the expected anguish and frustration of spinning tires on cars stuck deep in snow\, from the age-old struggle of change between adolescence and adulthood to the observation of sheer idiocy\, she leaves it to the imagination of her audience to conjure their own images of her storytelling and song. The consummate musician\, he can play inside and outside the lines with musicians of all stripes or plaids. “Showing technical dexterity\, sentient depth\, pleasing tone and keen phrasing in courteous respect to Stephane Grappelli.” Downbeat \nCount This Penny is from Madison (Wisconsin) by way of East Tennessee. They write songs born of doggedly traveling to and from the hills of home. \nSince their first show at the Down Home’s Open Hoot in 2009\, CTP has appeared on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion\, Wisconsin Public Radio\, Wisconsin Public Television’s 30-Minute Music Hour\, and WDVX’s Blue Plate Special in Knoxville\, Tennessee. Following their national radio debut in March\, their EP hit the #6 spot on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart. \n“If you like the Everybodyfields\, the Civil Wars\, or some old school Gram and Emmylou\, you will dig Count This Penny.” –Muzzle of Bees \n“Folks may have a faint idea of what to expect from a band that describes what it does as “Appalachian pop\,” but they’ll likely be surprised by how instantly inviting Count This Penny sounds. It’s music steeped in old American traditions\, but the concise form the songs adhere to and the pop structures the band employs make the songs modern and streamlined enough to thrive far from the mountains where their inspiration first saw the light of day.” –The Onion’s A.V. SUMMARY:SMALL POTATOES
DESCRIPTION:Small Potatoes has called themselves eclecto-maniacs and described their music as “Celtic to Cowboy”. They say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country\, blues\, and swing to Irish\, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Their four recordings\, “Alive!”\, “Waltz of the Wallflowers”\, “Time Flies” and “Raw” demonstrate that “indecision” can be wonderfully entertaining. They both sing\, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. \n“Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso combine cleverly witty with powerfully poignant songs\, along with well chosen covers to present an unusually entertaining and involving repertoire engagingly delivered. Prezioso’s song “1000 Candles\, 1000 Cranes” is one of the most outstanding songs of the past 50\nyears.” Rich Warren\, The Midnight Special – WFMT Radio\, Chicago\, IL\n\nWhen you see Small Potatoes perform\, you hear two great voices\, some fine guitar playing\, and a touch of tin whistle\, flute\, mandolin\, bodhran\, and other percussion toys. Together they present a truly rare blend of vocal and instrumental abilities\, award-winning songwriting\, and arranging talents. They have the unique ability to adapt to the style of music they happen to be playing\, and they also pay attention to the little things\, the warmth\, the humor and a rapport with the audience that makes for a memorable performance. \n“Make ‘em Laugh\, Make ‘em Cry\, Make ‘em Think”

SUMMARY:THE WRONG OMAR
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis based Singer/Songwriter Joey Shaheen aka “The Wrong Omar” continues his “Sled-Dawg-Slushy Tour” in support of his recent CD release “Shoot Up The Town”. Joey is on his 3rd tour of the U.S. and will be parking his green Toyota Prius in front of Cafe Carpe on Saturday November 17th for an evening of songs\, stories\, poems and Rock & Roll aphorisms\, accompanied by a cello/mandolin/string player and a percussionist. His catalog from 7 CDs includes a warm blend of roots/folk/rock with blues harp and a substantial amount of quirk. Like a clever cartoon\, the adult themes are subtly disguised providing a show for people of experience and children alike. Joey has appeared with the likes of RB Morris\, Daphne Willis\, Hamilton Loomis and Monroe Crossing. \nThis review from the Twin Cities Daily Planet is a good summary of what you will come away with: \n“…It’s beautiful with a strong\, pointed chorus that compels with engaging urgency….when it hits\, it’s dead-on\, brilliantly inspired….Excellent songwriting. Warm\, wry melodies over bright\, moody chords….” \nYou can listen online at reverbnation.com/thewrongomar

SUMMARY:JENN & BASHO
DESCRIPTION:Jenn and Basho \nJenn and Basho met in 2010 while contributing their talents to bands around Portland\, Oregon. Discovering common loves and tribulations propelled them to become an inseparable team both on and offstage. Rawling composes highly melodic songs from fascinating scraps of phrases and images\, singing them with an engaging yodel-edged alto. Parks sings harmony\, but his “voice” is heard in the form of the his distinctive string-playing\, which has a dusty\, mournful quality revealing classical\, mountain and bluegrass influences. For the last six months the couple has been touring the U.S. in support of their debut album “Take the Air.”

SUMMARY:THE JOKES
DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Pinc has gathered another group of musicians in a jocular fashion. \nThe Jokes are: Satchel Paige on bass\, Sam Arneson on drums\, Jeremy Pinc on vocals and guitar\, and Pat Stillman on lead guitar. Wildly pro gay rights\, the Jokes have had controversial concerts since Day One. They are banned in Colombia\, Sweden\, and the Czech Republic because of their explicit support for Japan. If you like musical sushi you’ll like the Jokes… raw… and that’s just the start! If you like tempura you’ll love the deep-fried but light texture of Pat Stillman’s modal riffs and tasty licks or the edamame-like beats of Sam’s drums. With Satch Paige as a certified samurai and Jeremy Pinc’s kabuki makeup you have a veritable death sentence for all the sino-phobes out there. \nThis is a record release party for the Jokes\, who recently went to Nashville to lay down some tunes not quite as off-the-wall as the above bio would lead you to believe. \nEarplugs recommended.
