Equally at home in Jazz\, Classical music\, Rock\, Folk\, Latin\, and World Music\, he brings a fresh lyrical approach to whatever he plays. This has made him a favorite with audiences worldwide\, and a recording artist sought after by the likes of Kenny Loggins\, Dolly Parton\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Styx\, Donald Fagen\, and Paul Simon. As a sideman\, Howard has appeared on hundreds of CDs and played on many movie soundtracks. \nHe is perhaps best known for the four CD’s he recorded with Bela Fleck and The Flecktones\, a unique band that set the musical world on its ear back in the early 1990’s. He got back together with the band in 2010 and recorded the CD Rocket Science. They toured extensively in 2011-2012\, and Howard won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition for “Life in Eleven”\, which he wrote with Bela Fleck. \nHoward’s other prominent collaborations include three CDs with Trio Globo (Glen Velez and Eugene Friesen)\, two with Lebanese Oud player/composer Rabih Abou Khalil\, and one with the avant- garde Jazz Riessler/Levy/Matinier Trio. \nHoward is music director and chief composer for the Latin/Jazz group  Chévere de Chicago. DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin graces us every 2nd Thursday of the month (usually). Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine. \nIt serves us well if you call to reserve.

DESCRIPTION:Bill Camplin was one of the founding fathers\, John Adams.  \nHe portrayed a non-rotund Adams in the play 1776. He and the band will not be performing any of the songs from that play\, but they will entertain and move you with eclectic repertoire and repartee. \nOpener Ben Merens is singer/songwriter who is best known throughout the state for having been a primary voice of Wisconsin Public Radio for 21 years. \nBen also is a public speaker whose expertise is the art of listening and an improvisational musician who likes to write songs for you “while you wait.” \nBen uses the guitar as a storytelling tool and mixes originals with some unique versions of some standard covers. He also uses the style of “git-tap” to turn his guitar into a drum at times.

During that time\, he met his second wife\, Linda\, and they settled in her hometown of Salado\, Texas. They had a son and Thomas built a career as a software consultant.  \nIn 2011\, Thomas released the sound track from his one-man musical titled Captured Rainbow\, based on the life of a consultant who spends most of his time on the road. The two-act play\, performed in Austin\, Milwaukee\, Chicago and Salado\, features stories and songs about his experiences and the people he meets along the way.  One of its songs\, “Salado\,” was adopted by the Village of Salado\, which stated in an official proclamation that it “represents our community’s spirit\, character and history.” \nThomas calls the experience of recording his latest work with Gage “joyful\, fun-filled and humbling.” \nThe title track reaches back to the days of Buddy Holly and all the songs that “never grow old” — songs that become a part of life’s soundtrack and “sing to the wings of my heart.”

DESCRIPTION:Please consider coming to this night of music and community to help out a local family.* \nLocal singer-songwriter Kaia Fowler’s family has been facing some major challenges these past 2 years.  Her husband\, Scott\, went from feeling like a healthy 42-year-old man when the New Year rang in on January 1\, 2011 to facing one of the deadliest and most difficult to treat cancers by April of that year. Since then\, he has undergone surgery\, radiation and a combined total of about 11 months of chemotherapy. His chemotherapy treatment is ongoing with no planned end-date. It is keeping him alive and is the recommended treatment for as long as it continues to work. \nEven with insurance\, costs for medical care and travel to treatment add up. Due to the severe anemia and other side effects\, Scott was not able to keep working at his job\, so\, as of March\, the family has gone from two incomes to one. Kaia and friends wanted to hold a benefit concert to build community support and to raise some funds to help with cancer-related expenses. \nMusic will begin with Kaia Fowler and Jessica Kennedy at 7. From blues and classic country to gospel and bluegrass\, his playing is well rounded and tasteful on several instruments. Jon is accomplished on guitar and mandolin as well as 5 string banjo\, which is his primary focus. He specializes in the three-finger Scruggs style found in traditional bluegrass\, adding elements from blues and country to create melodic and rhythmic interest. \nJon played mandolin\, banjo\, and keyboard for 8 years with the Pitneys–a gospel band from the Rockford Illinois area. He is a founding member of Madison’s Nob Hill Boys who have been featured on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. \nJon teaches banjo at Spruce Tree Music in Madison and at Hartland Music in Hartland. He also has been an instructor for the Dane County Bluegrass in the Schools program. In addition to his musical endeavors\, Jon works for a small publishing company in Chicago. He currently lives in Wauwatosa with his wife Cathy.

DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin graces us every 2nd Thursday of the month (usually). Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. DESCRIPTION:KAIA FOWLER‘s reemergence as a performing artist in 2008 led to the release of her solo CD\, Seams of My Heart in 2010. Since then\, Kaia has expanded into the Madison area and beyond performing regularly and selling her CD at shows and online. \nThe recording project enabled Kaia to work with outstanding musicians including Randy Sabien\, who brought his violin and mandolin wizardry to the album\, and Sam Steffke whose keyboard skills adorn the jazzy song “Let Him Be.” Local dobro master Paul Bast also appears on three songs on the album.  \nFollowing the release of Seams of My Heart\, Kaia was invited to play her song “Who Are You?” as a guest at Michelle Shocked’s concert in Madison\, September of 2010. DESCRIPTION:Mitch Thomas and Fred Campeau and Jim and Vivian Craig have put together an ukeclectic show that promises to bring a smile\, and maybe a tear or two. \nIn addition to their tight vocal blending\, the foursome stretch out with some instrumental surprises:  Viv and Mitch on ukuleles\, Fred on guitar\, banjo\, and Hawaiian resonator guitar\, and Jim on concertina\, guitar\, and bass ukulele (yes\, you read that right).  There’ll be old songs\, blue songs\, and some new songs\, written by Jim and Viv.  \nFred Campeau and Mitch Thomas have been a team since the early 70’s\, when they met while both were performing around Chicago. Fred plays guitar\, banjo\, fiddle and harmonica\, and was a long-time member of the Volo Bogtrotters. In addition to playing guitar\, banjo and ukulele\, Mitch teaches choir\, theater and uke\, and is a two-time winner of the Wheatland Festival Folksinging Contest. \nJim and Vivian Craig have been harmonizing for almost forty years.  When not loosely affiliated with Mitch and Fred\, Jim and Viv perform with Chicago-based Na Mele Aloha\, an Hawaiian music ensemble.  \nAny of you who used to frequent the Green Dragon would have fond memories of them all.
