SUMMARY:NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin graces us every 2nd Thursday of the month (usually). Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine. \nIt serves us well if you call to reserve.

SUMMARY:ZOE MUTH & the LOST HIGH ROLLERS
DESCRIPTION:ZOE MUTH \nStaffer Dennis had been playing her in the kitchen all the time\, and then we get the phone call asking if she could play here. If you build it\, they will storm your kitchen. \n Praise for 2012’s Old Gold: \n“Muth sings like a lost lamented Carter sister . . .Her decidedly un-Joplin-esque take on ‘Get It While You Can’ is an inspired highlight.”\n-Vintage Guitar Magazine \nPraise for 2012’s Starlight Hotel: \n“With a haunting voice that treads soul and country and can only be described as a cosmic americana\, Zoe Muth delivers songs that sound like vintage country classics.”\n– Twangville \n“We rarely talk about country music as being “soulful” or having “soul”\, but thank god Zoe Muth is here to change this…the gentle truth of her songwriting and the softness of her voice lend a weight to the music that gives Starlight Hotel\, a true feeling of soulfulness… an astonishingly good songwriter.”\n– No Depression \n“Muth has gifted the world with a collection of music that is straight no chaser . . .Just when you start to believe that they just don’t make ’em the way they used to\, Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers come along to restore your faith.”\n– Country Standard Time \n“It’s clear\, unforced passion\, “not for the jet set\, but the old Chevrolet set\,” that informs all of these songs\, along with a high\, pure voice that rises to Iris Dement and Patty Griffin territory…There isn’t a bad song on this album…honky-tonk comes so naturally to the young Muth\, along with a charming drawl…”\n– The Billings Gazette \n‘Starlight Hotel is one of those albums that you need if your first exposures to country music came from the static-y radio in the cab of your dad’s old pickup truck… essential listening.’\n– ninebullets.net

SUMMARY:OOPS! NOT BIRDS OF CHICAGO! OPEN STAGE Read More
DESCRIPTION:Due to some randomi’mprettysuregremlincaused booking error\, the prior info stating that the Birds would be here was inaccurate. Thank you to hot tipster Paul who saved us from this being a worse disaster. THERE WILL BE AN OPEN STAGE INSTEAD. \nWe wish it weren’t so\, but the BIRDS are actually flying to the High Noon Saloon in Madison on this night. I’m sure they will deign to play here sometime in the future. \nBirds of Chicago is a collective based around JT Nero and Allison Russell. Whether touring as a duo or with the full family band\, Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music.

SUMMARY:THE MINIMALISTS- guitar duo of Jeff Mason & Perry Baird
DESCRIPTION:I had erroneously stated these gentlemen as playing on the 16th with an open stage scheduled on this date. Ignore that- this is the night\, these are the guys. August 16th will be an open stage. \nIt was just a short 23+ years ago that Fort Atkinson’s own Perry Baird and Jeff Mason last graced the stage together at the Carpe. Now they are both crusty old coots with grandchildren\, looking forward to collecting Social Security. In stubborn defiance to the advance of years and the physical and mental decline that accompanies it\, they are ready to turn back the clock (at least for one night). They got to reminiscing at the Rotary pancake breakfast this year and it led to this evening of music. \nPerry Baird’s strong and smooth baritone vocals draw you in to the songs he plays\, selections that are an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional styles. He occasionally performs solo\, accompanying himself on 6- and 12-string guitar\, and he’s more frequently on stage with a folk trio known as the Buzzards\, which includes Madison’s Mike and Patty McDougal. \nJeff Mason accompanies Perry on guitar and vocals\, combining finger-style and flat-picking counterpoint…with a bit of soloing thrown in. Jeff also does a solo act (with his looper)\, performs with the locally infamous Merry Horde\, also occasionally as the newly hatched Jeff Mason Trio. Now this. Nobody (including Jeff) is quite sure where—or with whom—he will end up next. \nYou don’t want to wait another quarter-century before these guys get together again\, so catch them while you can (and they’re able).

SUMMARY:BRETT NEWSKI/Laura Balke
DESCRIPTION:Spending six homeless months in Asia gives a man a lot to think about. Brett’s album In Between Exits is recorded and mixed from Bangkok to Hong Kong to the Philippines and everywhere in between. Makeshift studios in Couchsurfer apartments and budget hotels made it possible. Coined the “Homeless in Asia Tour”\, “Exits” captures the liberating highs and loneliest lows of solo wanderlusting. Brett has returned to Wisconsin after living two years in Vietnam\, and comes back to the Cafe Carpe to launch 3 months of national and international touring behind the album. \nBrett will be joined by Laura Balke.

SUMMARY:SONG SWAP w/ / TRICIA ALEXANDER\, PETE JONNSON\, DAVID HAWKINS
DESCRIPTION:Song swaps are fun!! Lots of different talent thrown together and inspiring each other. \nTRICIA ALEXANDER– Joy-filled\, uplifting and inspiring are some of the words used to describe Tricia Alexander’s music and performance – which ranges from soothing and deeply spiritual to social commentary and humor. \nSinger\, songwriter\, performance poet\, accomplished guitarist\, percussionist and harmonica player\, Tricia moves between jazz\, blues and folk\, spoken word and music\, original compositions and re-interpreted cover tunes – and she does it all with seamless grace. \nTricia has been known for many years as “one of Chicago’s finest folk performers – always a little on the jazzy side” (Chicago Sun Times). Her original blues\, jazz and folk music ranges from soothing and deeply spiritual to social commentary – and from lightly romantic to slightly bawdy. Humanities Iowa calls her\, “A modern-day Aesop” – and the Folk Music Source Book places her “intelligent contemporary writing” in the same league as: Holly Near\, Cheryl Wheeler\, Anne Hills and Christine Lavin.　 \nVibrant\, uplifting and healing with a voice\, lyrics and music that resonate the heart. Blue O’Connell\, Eclectic Woman\, WTJU FM VA) \nPETE JONNSON is a fine guitar player and singer with an interesting repertoire of Americana tunes. He was one of the members of the trio Live Bait. He has made excellent use of his early retirement to submerge himself in his music. \nDAVID HAWKINS is a songwriter\, singer\, and guitarist from the cities of Chicago (Rogers Park\, Evanston\, Lake Bluff)\, Tulsa\, and New Orleans (Metairie). \nA Few Thoughts from David: \nYou have no doubt noticed that thousands of websites are full of musicians looking for a style\, a trend\, an image\, or even a true depiction of who they are–anything to be noticed as distinct identities in an ocean of identities. Often\, even the really good musicians seem to be drops in the bucket\, spit in the ocean. Music has to be more than an arsenal of hair\, costumes\, and poses. At its best\, it is about how the spirit of a song calls to us. My vision is that the true voices in music will emerge from the blurred mass and be heard alongside the other true voices already among us. The way I see it\, somewhere under all the layers is a true voice in everyone. Whether or not I have found my truest voice yet\, I know that one of the ways that I feel closest to it is through writing or singing a song.

SUMMARY:ERIC BLOWTORCH /Mike Plaisted
DESCRIPTION:Electric Eric Blowtorch \nSinger/guitarist/songwriter Eric Blowtorch sings\, plays\, and writes reggae\, ska\, rocksteady\, soul\, rock ‘n’ roll\, funk\, hip-hop\, Anglo-Afropop\, and jazz songs with rhythm\, melody\, passion\, and original comic timing. E.B. plays solo\, in duos with selected stars\, and sometimes more. \nThe new Eric Blowtorch album\, on which E. B. plays drums\, percussion\, bass(electric and upright)\, piano\, organ\, guitar\, and trumpet\, in addition to singing\, is entitled Eric Blowtorch Plays Himself. “Everybody has a gimmick\,” Blowtorch claims. “Mine’s content” – emotional\, communal\, and political content delivered with intense guitar playing and singing. \nEric Blowtorch is an ambitious artist; some say lunatic. In fits of inspiration\, E. B. put music to two tracks from Thomas Pynchon’s landmark novel Gravity’s Rainbow. One of the resulting songs appears as a ghost track at the end of the Milwaukee compilation CD Workman’s Comp. Dr. Larry Daw of The Modern World\, a Pynchon fan website\, describes one of E. B.’s interpretations of a Pynchon lyric as “stylistically unique and almost impossible to peg to one musical style. It shows great compositional skill and a tremendous sensitivity to what Pynchon was trying to say. It amplifies his meaning to a far greater extent that what one gets from just reading some printed words on a page.”
