SUMMARY:PETER\, PAUL\, and WILLY
DESCRIPTION:Tickets can be purchased in person at the Carpe or through BROWN PAPER TICKETS- see\, right here! \nPeter explains it thus: \n“People\, this is the heart of what I do. I love to get musicians together and to play music in its raw\, conversational form. To listen\, to jump in without knowing exactly what comes next\, to be surprised and enlivened. This is the holy grail for me: to play music as though it’s happening offstage\, for pure joy and discovery and communication between friends and strangers. And over the past decade or so\, first in the winter at my hometown Cafe Carpe\, and then over the past three years at my home-away-from-hometown ClubPassim\, I’ve found a way to tease this kind of offstage music into an onstage situation: The Lamplighter Sessions. It changes every year\, but then\, don’t we all? Trust me\, you should get to one of these shows if you can. Lightning will strike.”\nPETER MULVEY – “master guitar wizard\, erudite song writer and just all around great guy. The depth in any Mulvey song is incredible from the mastery of tune & rhythm\, to the lyrics\, even down to the concept of his albums”. Whitney Luckett \nPAUL CEBAR Some idea of what Paul is about: “Milwaukee native Paul Cebar is a singing\, strumming\, and dancing museum of musical culture and a self-styled historian of myriad musical forms. Countless sounds pour forth when Cebar and his Milwaukeeans take the stage. New Orleans\, Chicago\, New york\, Africa\, Brazil\, Cuba\, jump-blues\, gospel\, jazz\, reggae\, calypso\, soul and vintage R&B are sterting points for something that becomes uniquely Cebar. This mishmash helps reimagine and liven up obscure classics\, and the band’s originals present new viewpoints on established styles.” The Onion AV Club \nWILLY PORTER\n“Porter plays intelligent\, groove — heavy folk with hearty abandon”\n— Santa Fe New Mexican \n“With his exquisite\, tranquil guitar work\, Willy Porter could easily astonish an audience without singing one note. His ability to engage the audience with his personality and intellect raises Porter from the level of guitar wonk into the realm of masterful performer.”\n— Earvolution \n“Willy Porter is a relaxed and fearless performer who’ll entertain you as well as move you.”\n— Acoustic Guitar Magazine\n“Porter accentuates well – rendered tales with spit – fire – percussive acoustic guitar strumming and fiery color – chord picking.”\n— Billboard \n“[Willy Porter] can captivate an audience as completely as can an entire rock band.”\n— Washington Times

SUMMARY:JIM & VIVIAN CRAIG and FRED CAMPEAU and MITCH THOMAS
DESCRIPTION:Mitch Thomas and Fred Campeau and Jim and Vivian Craig have put together an ukeclectic show that promises to bring a smile\, and maybe a tear or two. \nIn addition to their tight vocal blending\, the foursome stretch out with some instrumental surprises: Viv and Mitch on ukuleles\, Fred on guitar\, banjo\, and Hawaiian resonator guitar\, and Jim on concertina\, guitar\, and bass ukulele (yes\, you read that right). There’ll be old songs\, blue songs\, and some new songs\, written by Jim and Viv. \nFred Campeau and Mitch Thomas have been a team since the early 70’s\, when they met while both were performing around Chicago. Fred plays guitar\, banjo\, fiddle and harmonica\, and was a long-time member of the Volo Bogtrotters. In addition to playing guitar\, banjo and ukulele\, Mitch teaches choir\, theater and uke\, and is a two-time winner of the Wheatland Festival Folksinging Contest. \nJim and Vivian Craig have been harmonizing for almost forty years. When not loosely affiliated with Mitch and Fred\, Jim and Viv perform with Chicago-based Na Mele Aloha\, an Hawaiian music ensemble. \nAny of you who used to frequent the Green Dragon would have fond memories of them all.

SUMMARY:CAITLIN CANTY
DESCRIPTION:CAITLIN CANTY makes her Carpe debut and you want to be there. PLEASE CALL TO RESERVE. \nCaitlin Canty delivers her songs with a 1930’s Recording King guitar and a dusky alto\, painting the line between joy and pathos with uncanny precision and power. Raised in small-town Vermont\, the daughter of a school teacher and a house painter\, she spent a decade in New York City as a performer and as the first employee of the successful Artists Den series. She released RECKLESS SKYLINE (January 2015) produced by acclaimed songwriter Jeffrey Foucault\, featuring an all-star band on twelve songs that veer nimbly between country ballads and straight-up rockers\, dark blues and sparsely arranged folk. \nBoth on the road and on her unreleased new album\, Caitlin Canty teams with some of the finest musicians in the world – including members of Morphine\, Booker T\, Cold Satellite\, and Ray LaMontagne’s Pariah Dogs – to create a sound that harnesses the grit and spark at the very heart of American music. \n“The Vermont native with a casually devastating voice and unshakable poise is bound to be the next great Americana star” – San Francisco Chronicle \n“Reckless Skyline manages to combine elements of folk\, blues\, country and rock without sounding unfocused” – AllMusic\n“Hear a stirring\, pedal steel-powered pep talk from a Vermont-born\, Nashville-bound songwriter” – NPR Music \n“A delight… Fine songwriting on an album of 12 really strong songs” – The Telegraph \n“This is going to be a big year for Caitlin Canty. The Vermont-raised singer-songwriter has an Appalachian grit that informs her record\, Reckless Skyline” – The Bluegrass Situation \n“With her vintage guitar and rootsy rock style\, Caitlin Canty makes a sound all her own on her dynamite new album Reckless Skyline” – Philadelphia Inquirer \n“Tapping into blues\, country\, mountain ballads\, and roots rock\, Canty’s songs have an elemental sound – reflecting the influence of such songwriters as Lucinda Williams\, Gillian Welch\, Johnny Cash and Tom Petty.”\n– Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers\, Acoustic Guitar \n“As good as it gets” – PopDose \nShe will be appearing here with guitarist/ pedal steel player ERIC HEYWOOD\, who has worked with artists such as Son Volt\, Richard Buckner\, the Jayhawks\, Ray LaMontagne\, Alejandro Escovedo\, Freakwater\, Calexico\, the Pretenders\, Kathleen Edwards and John Doe\, along with teen-pop singer Mandy Moore and Latino fusion band Yerba Buena. \nPLEASE CALL TO RESERVE.

SUMMARY:NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece bluegrass ball of fire featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin appears here regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Its various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. SUMMARY:PIPER ROAD
DESCRIPTION:PIPER ROAD is: \nRandal Harrison – Fiddle\nBob Mason – Mandolin\nMark Hembree — Bass\nBarry Riese — Guitar – Vocals\nBill Kangaroo — Washboard \nPiper Road was born into the age of rock & roll with individual backgrounds diverse as classical\, cowboy\, folk\, blues and Dixieland. Influenced by some live performances of Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band release of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” in the early 1970’s\, they put away the electric amps and guitars and developed a unique acoustic/bluegrass style. They never completely abandoned their musical roots and have blended Irish fiddle tunes with American country\, big band\, novelty and space-aged Grateful Dead inspired jams. \nThe band continues to swing! With their strong bond of friendship\, commitment to quality musicianship and continuing support of a strong fan base\, Piper Road invites you to join them as their show hits the road. The current Piper Road roster has accumulated over 100 years of experience performing together.

SUMMARY:MARE EDSTROM & KENN FOX/ Kellie Kuehl
DESCRIPTION:MARE & KENN will be joined by Jared Furnish on background vocals. \nMare Edstrom’s road to the blues has been long and interesting. While she is primarily classically trained\, her formative years were spent playing piano and singing in local rock bands. Her first album\, Learning How to Believe\, was a combination of finely-crafted original songs and carefully selected cover songs by legends of the singer-songwriter school. She brought a truly new perspective to songs by the likes of Townes van Zandt\, Eric Taylor\, Greg Brown\, and Janis Ian. This amazing work was quickly followed by a second release titled Inside the Blues. This release\, a blues tribute\, showcases works by Blind Willie McTell\, T-Bone Walker\, Muddy Waters\, and Blind Willie Johnson\, as well as works by female artists Memphis Minnie and Little Esther. This highly acclaimed work has found its way onto major radio station playlists throughout Europe and the US. Inside the Blues has had extensive favorable reviews\, including key reviews by Blues Revue magazine in the US and Crossroads magazine in France. Mare’s wide vocal range\, energy\, and vintage brand of roadhouse authenticity have been duly noted by critics again and again. \nKelli Kuehl opens.

SUMMARY:FRED EAGLESMITH- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Leave message on the discussion board at BROWN PAPER TICKETS indicating you’d like a ticket if someone cannot use theirs. \nTickets will be sold via Brown Paper Tickets. \n \nThere are many reasons FRED is legendary. \nEaglesmith\, a songwriter’s songwriter\, has a depth that is informed by miles of experience as a true road dog. Fred is not only the star of show but also the bus driver and chief mechanic while on tour\, keeping him and his band on the road. Unlike many of today’s artists\, touring is not something he does some of the time or only in support of a new record. Touring is his life and The Fred Eaglesmith Travelling Steam Show is one of the last full time travelling shows today. Their busy itinerary added up to more than 270 days on the road last year and saw Fred only returning home long enough to play a handful of local shows and to go into the studio to record the new album. \nA typical day in the life of Eaglesmith will find him driving an average of four to eight hours between shows in his converted 1990 Bluebird tour bus. He outfitted the bus with a system of filters and pumps which he designed himself to enable them to run on waste vegetable oil recycled from deep fryers in venues and restaurants along the road. This past year included seeing Fred astonish many local mechanics by changing his own blown bus transmission on the side of a highway in rural Alberta without missing one gig. \nAdding a touch of the theatrics to every show\, Eaglesmith dubbed his band The Traveling Steam Show and they began performing in steampunk-ish outfits a few years ago when he released his Latin-influenced rock album Cha Cha Cha. “It harkens back to the ’60s and ’70s variety shows that were on TV\,” Eaglesmith told the Albuquerque Journal. “It’s a show. It’s a lot more than a concert. I like to pay attention to what’s cutting edge and bring that into the live show.” \nAnd with such great attention to giving the best in his performances both live and recorded\, critics have taken notice. The Bend Bulletin praised Fred as “a singer-songwriter with a loyal fan base: a raconteur known for his funny stories and sometimes funny\, sometimes poignant songs…a figure to whom ‘entertainer\,’ ‘humorous’ and ‘original’ can be applied in equal measure.” And the Los Angeles Times\, in a live review\, noted: “Eaglesmith snarled out lyrics that underscore his overriding attitude that music and musicians ought to be cherished in the here-and-now and valued for the quality of their art\, not the size of their bank accounts or TV ratings.” \nEaglesmith’s songwriting has also earned him multiple International awards and his songs have been covered by some of the biggest names in Nashville including Toby Keith\, Alan Jackson and Miranda Lambert. His music has been featured in films and television scores including those of True Blood and Grimm. Fred and his band have also performed as the musical guest on Late Show With David Letterman. This past year has also seen the launch of a highly successful musical theatre production Dear Johnny Deere inspired by and based on Fred’s songs. \nDespite all of these accomplishments you are more likely to see him playing to 150 of his fans in a small town community hall rather than at a large capacity theatre or concert venue. Likewise it is more probable to hear about his next show via a hand-stencilled roadside sign and to find Fred sleeping in his bus in a Walmart parking lot or local campground over a 5-star hotel. \nFred will appear with TIF GINN

SUMMARY:JEFF MASON & PERRY BAIRD & TOM COOK
DESCRIPTION:Perry Baird\, Tom Cook (TC) and Jeff Mason will embark on their first-ever performance together. The first two of these gents are officially retired from their former day jobs\, the latter is about half-way there. They are all getting a little long in the tooth and slow off the couch\, but their fingers are almost as nimble as ever. The boys will wind their way through traditional folk and fiddle (minus the fiddle) tunes and whatever else they can remember. Perry and Jeff play guitar(s) and Perry does most of the singing (they played their annual duo gig last year at the Carpe). TC seems to be bringing a collection of (mostly) four and eight-stringed wooden instruments and will be making his public singing debut. Quite honestly\, the whole thing is a work-in-progress and the old geezers are just as anxious as any one else to hear what happens. \nThe boys will wind their way through a mix of contemporary and traditional folk\, pop\, and blues tunes\, plus whatever else they can remember. \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:THE BRIAR PICKERS
DESCRIPTION:The Briar Pickers are a violin/mandolin duet consisting of mandolinist Brian Ray and fiddler Paul Kienitz\, melding traditional Appalachian folk melodies with classical chamber music sensibilities. \nThis conversational paradigm is the thread woven through the coupling of old-time ‘rustic’ properties with the intrinsic chamber music approach; being that of constructed or made in a plain and simple fashion and a small number of performers\, with one performer to a part. Resulting is their self-dubbed “rustic chamber music”…a collage of sounds evoking imagery and emotions that take the players and audience on a journey together to different times and places. \nThe duet is enchanced to a quartet with the addition of special guests fiddler extraordinaire Shauncey Ali\, and the superlative Trent Cuthbert on guitar. \nPlease call to reserve.

She recently finished grad school to become a special education teacher and now makes southwestern Washington her home. \n“Marianne’s audience rapport was engaging. She sang with wonderful pitch\, and controlled abandon. Flemming’s guitar playing was inventive and smooth\, and her compositions were clever and interesting -musically and lyrically.”\nRobert Goss\, Production Coordinator\, PSU Lincoln Performance Hall \n“The combination of her great lyrics and stellar musicianship makes this woman a cult legend.”\nRachel Bissex\, Singer/Songwriter \nI was blown away by Marianne’s talent. I can’t remember the last time I was so impressed with a performer – not only do I love her guitar playing\, but she has an amazing singing style\, and as if that isn’t enough\, she writes great songs too!\nDavid Duthie\, Bassist\, River City Ramblers

SUMMARY:COUNT THIS PENNY/ Jill and the Jax
DESCRIPTION:COUNT THIS PENNY is an “Appalachian pop” singer-songwriter duo born in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. They have appeared on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion\, were recently named one of Wisconsin’s ’10 Bands to Watch\,’ wrapped up 2014 with a national Communion tour\, and were included on NPR’s Austin 100 list during SXSW 2015. \n“If you like the Everybodyfields\, the Civil Wars\, or some old school Gram and Emmylou\, you will dig Count This Penny.”\n-Muzzle of Bees | Austin\, TX \n“Near-perfect folk music.”\n-Ear to the Ground | Pittsburgh\, PA \n“Folks may have a faint idea of what to expect from a band that describes what it does as “Appalachian pop\,” but they’ll likely be surprised by how instantly inviting Count This Penny sounds. It’s music steeped in old American traditions\, but the concise form the songs adhere to and the pop structures the band employs make the songs modern and streamlined enough to thrive far from the mountains where their inspiration first saw the light of day.”\n-The Onion’s A.V. Club | Madison\, WI \n“Their voices — one a bit gravelly\, the other crystal clear — form gorgeous harmonies and textures when paired.”\n-Isthmus | Madison\, WI \n“It’s not often one falls in love in a barn\, but that’s the case for me and Count This Penny. Lit by lamps and rope lights\, [they] filled the barn to the rafters with the intertwining of their voices. In a lineup of excellent bands they stood out – there was a genuine joy and love of music that radiated from them. This initial impression proved true – I’ve seen [them] in the audience of at least as many shows as they’ve played.”\n -Mixtapes|Heartbreaks || Madison\, WI \n“Warm harmonies\, great vocals\, and a brilliant banjo.”\n-Common Folk Music | WV \n“They’re masters of telling stories through song\, taking on the voices of well-crafted characters—a runaway kid\, a woman married to a no-good preacher man\, the father of a suicide victim\, or a couple reuniting after the man gets out of prison—in ways that resonate empathy. The subjects are often bleak\, but the melodies and harmonies are cathartic.”\n-Metro Pulse | Knoxville\, TN \n“There’s a warmth to the music…and a ramshackle grit.”\n-The Daily Times | Maryville\, TN \n“Their archetypal Appalachian magnetism\, insane harmonies and personal charm will pull you in and warm you through on a chilly November night.”\n-American Players Theatre | Spring Green\, WI \nPraise for Pitchman \n“On “Pitchman” — the last album recorded at the now-shuttered Smart Studios — throwback duo Amanda and Allen Rigell ease through assorted folk weepers and mournful murder ballads. Best of all\, however\, are those songs that touch on matters of the heart\, and the pair turns out hard-won love tunes (the earnest “Storm With You”) and bitter breakup cuts (the acidic title track) in equal measure.”\n77 Square\, #5 Best of Madison 2012 \n“A soul as old as the shadow of the mountains\, dressed as brightly as a summer afternoon…Behind the polished country of Count This Penny beats a heart of darkness\, made of broken love and tormenting memories. Something more\, in short\, than yet another musical couple ready to crowd the folk scene.”\nOndaRock | Italy \nPitchman and Count This Penny are yet another example of near perfect folk music that uses the harmonies of male and female vocals\, outstanding songwriting\, and traditional folk and country instrumentation to craft an album that\, from top to bottom\, is sure to please fans of the genre and beyond.\nEar to the Ground | Pittsburgh \nBeloved locals Jill and the Jax open. \nPlease call to reserve and arrange to buy your tickets in advance.

SUMMARY:MATTHEW FRANCIS ANDERSEN/ JOSH HARTY
DESCRIPTION:MATTHEW FRANCIS ANDERSEN is a Chicago native. His experience as a fishing guide in the northwoods allows him to seamlessly bridge the traffic and taverns of the city with the pines and prairies of the open Midwest. Matthew is currently touring in support of his cd Blue Line. He is the winner of American Songwriter Magazine’s 2012 lyric contest. \nJOSH HARTY is a singer/ songwriter originally from Fargo\, ND\, though now he calls Madison home. He grew up singing and later playing guitar with his dad from the age of 6\, touring the Midwest performing at senior centers\, churches and small-town festivals. These days he still spends most of the year on the road\, touring throughout the US and Europe (spending less time in Wisconsin than he’d like). Currently working on his fourth solo album and planning more tours for 2016\, Harty shows no signs of slowing down. His live shows prove that good story telling combined with journeyman musicianship is as American as music gets. \n“A work of extreme intensity\, with beautiful voice\, warm and strong.”-Lonestar Times of Italy \n“There is a dignity to this music making that leaves us feeling enriched for the experience.” – John Davy\, No Depression \n.”Josh\, Josh – where have you been? We’ve been waiting for you”- Americana UK \n“There’s a tangible raw honesty evident in Josh Harty’s classy county-influenced songwriting.” -R2 Magazine\, UK \n“An honest voice and fingers that seem to catch fire.”-The Atlanta Music Guide\, Atlanta GA \n“….one of the brightest new things in the country blues genre.” “… a singer/songwriter prodigy. ”\nThe Guardian\, Nenagh\, County Tipperary Ireland

SUMMARY:BILL STAINES
DESCRIPTION:Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. \nSinging mostly his own songs\, he has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today\, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65\,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances and one reviewer wrote\, “He has a sense of timing to match the best standup comic.” \nBill’s music is a slice of Americana\, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon\, the on-the-road truckers\, or the everyday workers that make up this land. \nMany of Bill’s songs have appeared in grade school music books\, church hymnals\, and scouting campfire songbooks; he is one of only a few songwriters to have eight songs published in the classic song collection\, Rise up Singing. Composer David Amram recently described Bill as “a modern day Stephen Foster…his songs will be around 100 years from now.” \nOver the decades\, you have heard Bill singing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion\, HBO’s award winning series Deadwood\, and Public Radio’s Mountain Stage. Additionally\, his music has been used in a number of films including Off and Running\, with Cyndi Lauper\, and The Return of the Secaucus Seven\, John Sayles’ debut as a writer- director. \nIn 1975\, Bill won National Yodeling Championship in Kerrville Texas. Another important recognition was given to him in 2007. Presented by the Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, The Jerry Christen Award recognized Bill’s contribution to New England folk music. \nCurrently\, Bill has recorded 26 albums; The Happy Wanderer and One More River were winners of the prestigious Parents’ Choice Award\, taking a gold medal and silver medal respectively. His songs have been recorded by many artists including Peter\, Paul\, and Mary\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, The Highwaymen\, Mason Williams\, Grandpa Jones\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, Nanci Griffith\, Glen Yarborough and others. \n“Folk music is rich in the human spirit and experience. I’ve always wanted to bring something of value to people through my songs.” With these thoughts\, Bill continues to drive the highways and back roads of the country year after year\, bringing his music to listeners\, young and old. \n“Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody left off-carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.” – Nanci Griffith\n“Staines is one of the best songwriters in folk music today\, penning lyrics that evoke a sense of place and a generous spirit to go along with his pretty melodies. – Associated Press\n“Staines is one of folk music’s best songwriters and entertainers.” – Milwaukee Journal\n“There is no better writer of instantly memorable singalong choruses in this genre of music!” – The Boston Globe\n“His gentle lilting voice\, spacious melodies and common-chord lyrics give his songs a homespun grace that often belies his mastery of the folk form. He is such a pure pleasure too\, people forget to notice how damn good at the job of singer-songwritering he really is.” – New England Folk Almanac\n“Folk singer Bill Staines’ compositions recall the paintings of Grandma Moses – simple\, literal and evocative of a bucolic tranquility that modern times have almost erased.” – Hartford Courant

SUMMARY:THE SUITCASE JUNKET
DESCRIPTION:Back so soon after wowing us all in May\, but we don’t mind. Don’t miss the amazing MATT LORENZ as the SUITCASE JUNKET. \nTHE SUITCASE JUNKET is a one-man tour de force out of Western Massachusetts. Matt has been road dogging for three years\, solo and with his band Rusty Belle\, touring with Chris Smithers\, David Wax Museum\, and Peter Mulvey. He’s got a powerful new CD out called Make Time. \nMatt plays a collection of leather satchels\, baby shoes\, oil cans\, cast-iron kettles\, sticks\, bones\, and a ragged guitar he had pulled out of someone’s trash. At first the novelty is mesmerizing\, then the music is. Suitcase finds extreme sounds — the wicked grind of a guitar\, the vintage buzz of an old mic\, the wild insect drone in the throes throat singing — and uses them to forward his restless skinny road-dog blues-playing big-hair cause. The boy has stories to tell. \nPeter Mulvey and many others sing Matt’s praises on a collection of various media\, including in-person speech\, echo chambers\, telephone\, shouting from the mountain tops and social media. \nMatt is a Vermont born musician\, visual artist and tinkerer\, and a professional showoff. “I aim to write good songs and sing them honestly” says Lorenz. He does that and more. The Suitcase Junket’s artistic vision is one of salvaged and repurposed objects\, images and emotions. His innovative junk-percussion constructions\, original album art featuring inanimate objects with wings\, and the high craft of his songwriting all combine to create a unique and engaging entity with a force and style all its own. Lorenz’s self-taught throat-singing adds a fascinating edge to the overall sound. “I’m interested in the hidden voices that reside within things: the songs stuck inside instruments\, the story behind the object\, the mysterious weight of a word\, the harmonic sequence that’s in every note waiting to be broken as light through a prism.” \nLorenz tours The Suitcase Junket nationally playing on festival stages and city street corners\, in concert halls and dive bars\, in living rooms and listening rooms. The sound isn’t easy to pin into a genre\, but The Suitcase Junket is often likened to Tom Waits\, The Black Keys and Andrew Bird. Lorenz’s songwriting is unexpected\, powerful and poignant\, drawing from the deep well of the American musical traditions of folk\, rock\, blues and storytelling\, all sharpened with a keen pop sensibility. With masterful command over instruments of his own creation\, he silences a room with the first notes of his throat singing and holds the crowd until the final chords of his guitar. When he plays you get the sense that he is truly playing and that he’d be doing it just as joyfully with or without an audience. \nThe Suitcase Junket has self-released two albums: Sever and Lift (2009) and Knock It Down. (2011) The third album\, Make Time\, came out on January 6\, 2015. “The band” is built around a resurrected dumpster-diamond guitar\, an old oversized suitcase\, a hi-hat\, a gas-can baby-shoe foot-drum\, a cookpot-soupcan-tambourine foot-drum\, a circular-saw-blade bell and a box of bones and silverware that operate much like a hi-hat. He pounds out rhythms with his feet and his twang-and-buzz guitar growls through a couple of old tube amps. On top of all this is the ethereal edge of his overtone throat-singing. This act is unique and not to be missed.”Make Time truly travels to various destinations of musical fortitude and emotion[…]It’s one hell of a ride that holds its resonance well after the record has stopped spinning.” – No Depression. \n“If croons could kill\, this one-man band would be a bounty hunter. Armed with a unique\, self-sufficient approach to raw instrumentation\, The Suitcase Junket is an artisan of song\, bending\, forging and sharpening each piece into an emotional tool.” -Performer Magazine. \n“His songs have a sense of beauty about them and are delivered with such forceful sound you can’t believe you aren’t listening to a full band.” – Greenfield Recorder \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:DAVE RAMONT
DESCRIPTION:David Alan Ramont was born in Illinois one muggy\, August Tuesday with a song stuck in his head. The doctors couldn’t get it out. (He was also left-handed but they couldn’t fix that either.) He grew into a little kid and began listening to lots of vinyl- Simon & Garfunkel\, Stones\, Guess Who\, Dylan\, Gary Puckett. Soundtracks from “The Good\, The Bad\, And The Ugly” & “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Other hobbies included ruminating and kicking stuff down the street. Then he growed up more\, or at least he got taller… \nHe picked up guitar early on (11?)\, perhaps to get that damn song out of his head\, and whacked away in various bands through high school. Not long after that he started teaching guitar and bass at a little music school outside of Chicago\, where he taught hundreds of people “Stairway To Heaven” and what an Aeolian minor scale was for. He began writing songs and playing gigs around the Chicago area –solo\, full band\, and everything in between. Through the years he also played in the pit for theatre productions\, did recording session work\, hid out in cover bands\, and did plenty of ditch digging\, paint scraping and weed pulling. \nAfter releasing his first CD “Toaster Reflection” he moved to Austin\, TX for a time and soaked up the thriving indy music scene –playing open mics\, songwriter showcases\, and driving a bakery truck. His songs began receiving some airplay. The Austin Chronicle said “The world could always use another quality singer-songwriter with meaty lyrics\, gritty vocals and a tight back-up band.” \nDave returned North with a tad more twang (and a helluva hangover) and recorded the rootsy\, darker “Scofflaws”. The Illinois Entertainer said “…unlike many simplistic roots-revivalists\, Ramont isn’t afraid to mix things up…gorgeously unexpected accordions and cellos pop up on this wonderfully produced CD.” He continued playing gigs and teaching. And digging ditches. \nIn 2000 he released “Scrawny” and began receiving more widespread airplay in the US (mostly on public and college radio) and Europe. Richard Milne of WXRT in Chicago called it “a delicious collection of distinctly American music.” Mark Guarino of Chicago’s Daily Herald said it was “…the finest collection of songwriting I’ve heard in a long time.” Once again the guitar\, bass & drums core was surrounded by accordion\, cello\, piano\, Dobro\, mandolin\, dulcimer\, crowbar\, lap steel\, horns\, etc. He toured more extensively- Midwest\, East\, South\, Southeast- and became\, well\, sleepier… \nHe borrowed a banjo and co-founded the swamp-billy band Dick Smith with some musical pals. They recorded 4 CDs and developed a hardcore little following\, playing around the Chicago regions and the Midwest. Acoustic Guitar Magazine picked their record “Smoke Damage” (2002) as one of the top 3 indy releases of the year. Dave then stepped away from music for a few years. But a feller never stops thinking about new songs\, nope –even if he wants to… \nAt the end of 2009 -flying in the face of recession- Ramont released a sprawling double CD called “Taw”\, polished his 1967 Gibson J-50 and started playing out again. His (old) song “I Wanna Marry A Waitress” was chosen to appear on “Blooming-Tunes 2010″\, a songwriter compilation released out of Bloomington\, IN. He had 2 songs featured on the 2011 record “Made In Aurora”\, a compilation of Chicago area songwriters/bands (1st pressing sold out).

SUMMARY:BRETT NEWSKI
DESCRIPTION:BRETT NEWSKI \n“I’m Brett Newski. I write heaps of songs and tour my face off in an effort to keep my anxiety under control. There are two people who refer to my style as\, “American Folk Armageddon\,” which happens to be the name of my new record. Other people tell me I sound like the Violent Femmes\, Frank Turner\, Jake Bugg and Ben Kweller. \nIn 2011\, I was job-less\, girl-less and band-less so I bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok and wandered around for six months\, recording in dirt-floored makeshift studios in the hills of Thailand\, Vietnam\, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Lost\, I moved to Saigon\, Vietnam on a $100 motor-scooter. I soon found myself writing music for tampon ads for Saatchi and Saatchi where the creative director called me “The Vagina King of Vietnam.” \nBack in ‘Nam\, I wrote nearly 100 power-folk songs. After two years and two albums\, I choked down my final bowl of pig ear soup and boarded a flight to America. Since then\, I have graduated from my parents’ basement and spend my time touring the world 200+ dates per year\, including Europe\, Australia and South Africa. \nThis bizarro odyssey inspired songs about sweet victory\, crushing defeat\, fleeting freedom\, losing my friend and saving my ass. I know there is light at the end of the tunnel…but then again….sometimes that light at the end of the tunnel is a train.” \n“Newski rocks in the grand tradition of Billy Bragg (and\, more recently\, Frank Turner)\, blending the sound of driving folk into songs that have the spirit (and occasionally the sound) of punk.\n-AV Club \n“Newski’s solid Midwestern roots anchor songs with super catchy melodies and melancholy lyrics with subtle wit.”\n-Guitar World \n“Loudest acoustic act ever.”\n-Eon Hare\, Daytrotter Engineer \n” (American Folk Armageddon is) a superb acoustic punk album. Part Frank Turner\, part Billy Bragg\, the ten songs that make up this record are often witty and always charming.\n-BLURT Magazine \n“Can’t wait for the full record. Having toured the world\, Brett has a unique story to tell\, and his music reflects those experiences.”\n–Kevin Leahy\, NPR \n“Oh my god\, so he fucking travels all over the world couch surfing and plays for people in their homes and calls it a show. That’s not a tour. That’s called being a bum.\n-Bonnie No How\, Hater
