SUMMARY:PETER ASHER and ALBERT LEE- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION: Show is SOLD OUT.  Click link below to post in the Discussion section if you have tickets to get rid of or want to acquire tickets someone wishes to get rid of.\n\nWe will open at 5:30 and are serving food.\n\n \n Was a great show when Albert Lee came here this winter with his band\, so we were happy he wanted to come back\, this time as a duo with PETER ASHER.\n\n As one half of Peter & Gordon\, Peter Asher’s voice “literally soared through Carnegie Hall” (Fox News)\, while Albert Lee has been called “the ultimate virtuoso” by Eric Clapton. Influenced from their earliest days as musicians and performers by great American artists like Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers\, Peter Asher and Albert Lee bring those influences to the fore in their first series of shows together as an acoustic duo.Albert Lee began his career as a touring musician in the early sixties\, and soon catapulted onto the stage with the likes of Joe Cocker\, Eric Clapton\, and Emmylou Harris. Harris said of him that Lee is “a brilliant guitar player. His sound is unmistakable—often emulated\, never equaled. When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth\, I’ll be able to say (with pride if that’s allowed) that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee.” A 25 year run as Music Director of his beloved Everly Brothers coincided with studio and stage work with Vince Gill\, Roseanne Cash\, and also Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr (“The Concert for George”). Even with all this\, he found the time for over 10 solo and band albums under his own monniker. His numerous studio sessions have led to 4 Grammy Awards nominations and two awards. We came to know Peter Asher via 10 Top 40 hits with Peter & Gordon\, whose debut “A World Without Love” topped the charts in the U.S.\, U.K.\, and over 30 other countries. His days as A & R Director for the Beatles’ Apple Records made history\, and he became a legend as Producer and Manager of James Taylor\, Linda Ronstadt and a host of others. He remains the only Artist Manager to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine\, and his studio work has led to two Grammy Awards for “Producer of the Year”.Theirs is a history of song\, and these duo shows will reflect that history. From the Peter & Gordon catalog\, Peter Asher and Albert Lee will harmonize on “World Without Love”\, I Go To Pieces”\, and more. From Albert Lee’s back pages\, expect the Jimmy Webb penned title track from his new acoustic album\, “The Highwayman”\, Glenn Campbell’s ” A Better Place”\, and the Jimmy Jones/Otis Blackwell classic “Handy Man”. Inspirations to both artists such as the Everly Brothers provide “Crying in the Rain” and “Bye Bye Love”\, while from Buddy Holly comes ” Well\, All Right”. As Peter & Albert tell us stories of the travels that brought them to so many of the intersections of music history\, the two legends bring these timeless songs to life.\n  \n

SUMMARY:FRED EAGLESMITH w/ Tif Ginn
DESCRIPTION:There are many reasons FRED is legendary. \nEaglesmith\, a songwriter’s songwriter\, has a depth that is informed by miles of experience as a true road dog. Fred is not only the star of show but also the bus driver and chief mechanic while on tour\, keeping him and his band on the road. Unlike many of today’s artists\, touring is not something he does some of the time or only in support of a new record. Touring is his life and The Fred Eaglesmith Travelling Steam Show is one of the last full time travelling shows today. Their busy itinerary added up to more than 270 days on the road last year and saw Fred only returning home long enough to play a handful of local shows and to go into the studio to record the new album. \nA typical day in the life of Eaglesmith will find him driving an average of four to eight hours between shows in his converted 1990 Bluebird tour bus. He outfitted the bus with a system of filters and pumps which he designed himself to enable them to run on waste vegetable oil recycled from deep fryers in venues and restaurants along the road. This past year included seeing Fred astonish many local mechanics by changing his own blown bus transmission on the side of a highway in rural Alberta without missing one gig. \nAdding a touch of the theatrics to every show\, Eaglesmith dubbed his band The Traveling Steam Show and they began performing in steampunk-ish outfits a few years ago when he released his Latin-influenced rock album Cha Cha Cha. “It harkens back to the ’60s and ’70s variety shows that were on TV\,” Eaglesmith told the Albuquerque Journal. “It’s a show. It’s a lot more than a concert. I like to pay attention to what’s cutting edge and bring that into the live show.” \nAnd with such great attention to giving the best in his performances both live and recorded\, critics have taken notice. The Bend Bulletin praised Fred as “a singer-songwriter with a loyal fan base: a raconteur known for his funny stories and sometimes funny\, sometimes poignant songs…a figure to whom ‘entertainer\,’ ‘humorous’ and ‘original’ can be applied in equal measure.” And the Los Angeles Times\, in a live review\, noted: “Eaglesmith snarled out lyrics that underscore his overriding attitude that music and musicians ought to be cherished in the here-and-now and valued for the quality of their art\, not the size of their bank accounts or TV ratings.” \nEaglesmith’s songwriting has also earned him multiple International awards and his songs have been covered by some of the biggest names in Nashville including Toby Keith\, Alan Jackson and Miranda Lambert. His music has been featured in films and television scores including those of True Blood and Grimm. Fred and his band have also performed as the musical guest on Late Show With David Letterman. This past year has also seen the launch of a highly successful musical theatre production Dear Johnny Deere inspired by and based on Fred’s songs. \nDespite all of these accomplishments you are more likely to see him playing to 150 of his fans in a small town community hall rather than at a large capacity theatre or concert venue. Likewise it is more probable to hear about his next show via a hand-stencilled roadside sign and to find Fred sleeping in his bus in a Walmart parking lot or local campground over a 5-star hotel. \nFred will appear with TIF GINN. Tif Ginn is a gutsy\, amazing singer and a transcendent songwriter who has spent most of her adult life touring North America playing music professionally. Ginn toured first as half of the Fabulous Ginn Sisters\, releasing 3 critically acclaimed CDs then as part of the Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Show. Now she takes a turn as a solo artist\, fronting the band she has been playing with for the last several years. \nFred Eaglesmith\, produced her first solo record “Tif Ginn” and it was recorded with his road-weathered band at Eaglesmith’s studio in Southern Ontario\, Canada. Eaglesmith used his trademark one-mic approach\, utilizing just one channel\, sending the mono/analog signal to quarter-inch tape. Nine of the twelve songs were co-written by Eaglesmith\, who is himself an iconic Americana songwriter. The songs indirectly reflect the kind of ‘struggle’ that is living in a motorhome and touring for years without much time to relax or regroup. They are songs of single moms\, lovesick fools\, trailer park life\, and abuse. \nEaglesmith’s analog approach yields a rounded\, smoky atmosphere that perfectly suits both the subject matter and the tour-tightened band. The bare\, honest and emotional sound is the real thing and the result is a beautiful yet edgy sound. Stylistically\, the CD runs from sultry\, jazzy country to angry punk\, embracing pop\, Americana and folk along the way. The trademark sound ties it all together delivering a mature and well-rounded product that is at once fearless and remarkably listenable.

SUMMARY:ELLIS PAUL- SOLD OUT- see note below
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 5:30\, and we are serving food. Come considerably early if you want to have time to eat before the show. \n  \nClick on the link to purchase tickets through BROWN PAPER TICKETS:  Leave a note including contact info in the Discussion section at Brown Paper Tickets if you are interested in being contacted should any tickets become available.. \n\nELLIS PAUL \nEllis Paul is a key figure in what has become known as the Boston school of songwriting\, a literate\, provocative and urbanely romantic folk-pop style that helped ignite the folk revival of the 1990s. His folk-pop music songs have appeared in movies and on television\, and are said to bridge the gap between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. \n“Ellis Paul is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation. And for many of us he is the face of contemporary folk music. Few are as smart\, as literate\, as poetic as Paul. I cannot think of another artist on the acoustic music scene is better loved by fans\, or more respected by his contemporaries.” \nSome artists document their lives through their music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both\, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era over- all. Woody Guthrie comes to mind\, and so does Bob Dylan. Bruce Springsteen certainly as well. Yet few others\, for whatever genius they may possess\, can relate their own history to the history experienced by those who find that common bond\, be it in a coming of age\, living through the same realities or sharing similar experiences. \nEllis Paul is one of those gifted singer/songwriters. Though some may refer to him as a folksinger\, he is more\, for lack of a better word\, a singular storyteller\, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express the feelings\, thoughts and sensibilities that most people can relate to in one way or another\, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes. The hope for redemption. Descriptions of those things that are both near and dear. The sharing of love…\, intimate\, passionate and enduring.

Further cred- finalist Wildflower Festival Songwriting Contest\,  New Folk Winner- Kerrville Folk Festival\, Emmy-Winning Composer \n“If the Carter Family\, Robbie Robertson and Alfred Hitchcock had written songs together\, they might sound like this.” That is singer-songwriter Ernest Troost’s self-introduction when he takes the stage\, whether he’s playing for festival-goers at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas\, where he was named New Folk Winner in 2009\, or performing at select clubs and coffeehouses around greater Los Angeles. It’s a clever statement that hints at the spirit of his folk-blues tunes — and Troost himself. When audiences hear his beautiful melodies and deftly detailed lyrics\, they’re curious to learn more about him. \nAbout O LOVE:\n“Lyrically\, he’s going to knock you flat with one punch. Killer stuff throughout\, this is the work of an undeniable talent taking it to the next level of the game. You just might not hear Americana the same way again after you take a byte of this. Easily one of the best ‘folk’ albums to come out this year. . . . Check it out.”\n–Chris Spector\, Midwest Record \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:HAYWARD WILLIAMS/ The Yearlings/ Lucie Thorne
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee singer-songwriter HAYWARD is joined by Australian friends the YEARLINGS and LUCIE THORNE for what promises to be an interesting and lovely night of music. \n“Looking at the bespectacled youth peering out from the album bio\, you would never expect the smoky authoritative voice that swells from Cotton Bell. But maybe Williams’ appearance belies his age\, this being the Milwaukee singer-songwriter’s third full length album. Williams’ is the voice of maturity and restraint\, and by voice I mean not only his deep\, resonant singing\, but his approach\, attitude\, songwriting – the whole deal. Full of gentle\, tender songs beautifully recorded\, Cotton Bell presents nothing groundbreaking or startling. But the deeper you listen\, the further you appreciate those sounds and songs. Dan McMahon’s guitar and pedal steel and dobro are consistently grace full and as a co-producer\, he’s clearly a crucial ingredient to the impact of Cotton Bell. Strings and harmonies flesh out the songs beautifully throughout – Third track in ‘Mockingbird’ is a great example\,just gorgeous to listen to\, a breathtaking guitar solo\, strings and harmonies swelling and subsiding\, and Williams’ vocal melody glowing throughout.”  \n“Robyn Chalklen and Chris Parkinson are the core duo of THE YEARLINGS and this\, their fifth album\, finds them at the top of their game. All The Wandering is the kind of album that fires melancholic shots straight to your heart. With weeping pedal steel courtesy of Lost Ragas’ Shane Reilly alongside a raft of other great musicians they create ten absorbing songs to get lost in. From glacial late night shuffles to the tear-stained vocal harmonies riding ‘Plain Old Ring’s‘ soulful groove\, this is Americana at its finest; rich and soulful with just the right amount of lonely heartache. \n“Thorne’s music is poetic and poignant\, and sounds damn good. Her electric guitar style is textural rather than about riffs. So it’s folk only in that she tells bare\, intimate stories and is very much a songwriter. The rest is too abstract to be defined as one thing or the other. She is heavily into lyrics and literature and the textures of language. The way all this bumps up against the evocative music she makes is something to behold.” Chris Johnston\, The Age \nPLEASE CALL 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:AN EVENING W/ WRITER ISABEL ABBOTT
DESCRIPTION:Join the inimitable and incandescent ISABEL ABBOTT as she reads from her new book\, Salt + Honey\, followed by a book signing. \nIn her own words: \n“I make art installation in the forms of hieroglyphic maps and feathered and papered wings of desire. I study and serve as a presidential merit scholar at Chicago Theological Seminary\, exploring intersections of embodiment and sexual ethics\, interreligious engagement as a secular humanist\, religious ritual and cartography of faith. I live in a city that houses my stories\, and I am always on my way back to Mexico and my beloved. I write medical anthropology on the wandering womb\, secular prayers and love letters. With an anti-oppression orientation\, presence and devotion to the shadow and inexplicable light\, I serve on the thresholds\, bringing over fifteen years of professional experience as a birth and death doula\, sex educator and artist\, all of this entering into the creation of now. And I bake pies and hunt for lilacs and again and again return to the open road. \nI love this world. Love for coffee consumption\, and the late night sounds of my alley cat\, the trust of solitude\, the hum of neon\, the call of the secular pilgrimage\, the insistence of contradictions\, and heat. Love for the human and holy hedonistic hearts\, for solid ground and belonging to the body\, rough housing with words and re-envisioning the old myths\, giving voice to the unnamed. A hunger for the sacred and profane\, the return to the salt water\, the study of adaptation and insistence on movement and messy beautiful things.” \nPlease call to reserve at 920-563-9391.

SUMMARY:MIKE DOWLING
DESCRIPTION:MIKE DOWLING – bottleneck blues\, vintage swing\, ragtime\, and more\, played with grace\, wit and dazzling dexterity \nMike doesn’t come through that often\, so don’t miss the opportunity to hear this world-class guitarist. \n“Dowling is one of the most relaxed and highly skilled acoustic guitar players of his generation that I have ever heard. Everything he performs appears natural and deceptively effortless\, and with a tone\, particularly when he plays slide guitar that is very much his own and that very few others can emulate. His vocals have an engaging edge and alongside his consummate guitar skills there was nothing to criticize. After a number of encores a member of the audience spontaneously stood up and gave a heartfelt thanks to Mike for such a wonderful evening.”\nOctober 2003 performance review\,  Blues in Britain. \nPlease call to reserve. \n
