SUMMARY:WILLY PORTER / LJ BOOTH
DESCRIPTION:Willy Porter and LJ Booth both hail from Wisconsin\, mostly\, have written a few songs together\, are both articulate and entertaining and great musicians. What’s not to like? \nLocal (Milwaukee)hero Willy– what about him? \n“Porter plays intelligent\, groove — heavy folk with hearty abandon”\n— Santa Fe New Mexican \n“With his exquisite\, tranquil guitar work\, Willy Porter could easily astonish an audience without singing one note. His ability to engage the audience with his personality and intellect raises Porter from the level of guitar wonk into the realm of masterful performer.”\n— Earvolution \n“Willy Porter is a relaxed and fearless performer who’ll entertain you as well as move you.”\n— Acoustic Guitar Magazine\n“Porter accentuates well – rendered tales with spit – fire – percussive acoustic guitar strumming and fiery color – chord picking.”\n— Billboard \n“…[How To Rob A Bank] will remain timely for years to come…”\n— The Onion \n“[Willy Porter] can captivate an audience as completely as can an entire rock band.”\n— Washington Times \nAnd that LJ Booth\, what does he have going for him? \n“Seasoned performers are priceless in the era of short-term ‘discoveries’\, and LJ Booth is among the most adept and accomplished songwriters and storytellers in the country. His comfortable presence\, stellar songs\, and stage banter makes for a concert experience that resonates…” Mike Meyer\, KRVM-fm\, Oregon Public Broadcasting\,\nHope Chest Productions \n“LJ Booth is as literate as they come. As a lyricist\, he has the light touch of Lyle Lovett\, the unabashed honesty of Leonard Cohen and the sprawling\, joyous life of Walt Whitman. The plainness of his imagery and the economy of his phrasing is only made more effective by his glittering guitar parts and the simple grace of his songs.” \n“His vocal approach also possesses the effective simplicity of Lyle Lovett with a little Gordon Lightfoot thrown in. On the more raucous tunes like “Hold On!” and the fiddle-driven “Changing Sky”\, Booth is still completely in control\, driving the songs straight through to their satisfying conclusions. But it’s on the quiet moments that Booth really shines\, wheeling through joy\, freedom and longing with simple grace.” Performing Songwriter

SUMMARY:FOUCAULT/ Friedman SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT Call if you have any doubts. \nJeffrey Foucault has a record of outstanding records as long as your arm. The kudos can’t fit into cyberspace\, so they are creating a new dimension. \nTHE NEW YORKER:\n“Jeffrey Foucault\, sings stark\, literate songs that are as wide open as the landscape of his native Midwest.”\n\nMOJO:\n“Songwriting brilliance.” \nTHE IRISH TIMES:\n“Quietly brilliant…” \nUNCUT:\n“The music of Wisconsin native Foucault is the kind so many aspire to but never attain: beat-up troubadour folk whittled to dolorous perfection…”\n \nBEACONPASS:\n“Jeffrey Foucault pronounces his name “Folk-alt\,” and makes saying difficult things seem as easy as this straightforward pronunciation of his French surname. Praised for its tendency to combine raw\, weathered emotion with measured elegance\, Foucault’s music feels unadulterated and innate\, with veins of pedal steel\, the big-skied openness of Neil Young and the bizarre\, haunting imagery that you might find in a Flannery O’Connor story.” \nLongtime disciple of the rich and strange music that sings behind the American veil\, Foucault has spent the last decade mining the darker seams of country and blues\, producing a string of spare and elemental albums of rare power while garnering accolades across the United States and overseas for a tersely elegant brand of songwriting set apart by its haunting imagery and weather-beaten cool. He lives in Western Massachusetts. BUT HE HAS WISCONSIN WRITTEN ALL OVER HIM. \nOpening for Jeffrey is the formidable Andy Friedman artist poet turned musician songwriter. VILLAGE VOICE: “Here’s what happens to twang when it steeps in Brooklyn gin joints instead of Austin honky-tonks: it becomes a bit darker and more gnarled\, and though it likes the sun on its back\, it can thrive in the shadows. Friedman’s new Laserbeams and Dreams is peppered with the kind of bluesy unrest that sets your mind reeling\, and between the Jerry Jeff whimsy and Michael Hurley rumination\, it’s a great soundtrack for the worries that arrive during late-winter dusk.”

SUMMARY:OLEANNA- a David Mamet play starring MARTI GOBEL & JOSEPH HANREDDY
DESCRIPTION:OLEANNA by David Mamet in a Reader’s Theater format. Directed by Laura Gordon and featuring the talents of Joseph Hanreddy and Marti Gobel. Marti & Joseph performed this for Uprooted Theatre in Milwaukee recently. \nInspired by the Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas hearings\, Mamet’s play explores the power struggle that erupts between a university professor and his student. “Oleanna is an impassioned response to the Thomas hearings. As if ripped right from the typewriter\, it could not be more direct in its technique or more incendiary in its ambitions.” – Frank Rich\, New York Times.

SUMMARY:JESS KLEIN w/ BILLY MASTERS
DESCRIPTION:Jess Klein will be appearing with a brand new CD in hand\, and Austin guitarist Billy Masters providing support. \n“She has one of those voices you want to crawl up close to the speakers to listen to.” –MOJO Magazine \n“The beauty lives behind a veil”\, Jess Klein passionately sings on the rock- influenced title track of her new album. \nThe songs on Behind A Veil are a direct result of a personally challenging 2011 for Jess; losing her father to a 5 year battle with ALS\, splitting with a lover\, and the self-empowering decision to move forward with no management or record label. \nJess explains: “You never really know what the big picture is to a situation – sometimes the meaning is veiled. It can seem really bad\, but then later you can look back at the same moment and feel so grateful it went that way; I love that about life. Sometimes things are just really hard and really painful\, but also beautiful.” \nWe can never escape the emotions of love\, loss\, joy or pain\, so Jess Klein courageously and honestly writes all about them in each of the 10 songs on her new release. Klein’s no holds barred album is set to hit the streets April 10\, 2012. \nWith the help of one of Austin’s finest producers Mark Addison\, Klein’s voice confidently soars with every melody. Even in the delicate ballad “Beautiful Child”\, a song about loss and feeling alone\, you can hear the underlying triumph in Klein’s interpretation. From cover to cover\, Behind A Veil truly demonstrates her maturity and growth as a singer\, songwriter\, and musician. \nKlein’s first release with Ryko\, Draw Them Near received 3.5 Stars from USA Today and helped launch her nationally. Her 2005 release Strawberry Lover hit the Triple A charts and received much critical acclaim including “Sexiest Song” by New York Daily News. 2009’s release Bound To Love was given 4 stars by Ireland’s Hot Press and high praise from the likes of Bernard Zuel of Sydney Morning Herald and Steven Stone of Vintage Guitar. \nJess continues to consistently tour the U.S\, U.K. and Europe and will be touring nationally with a full band supporting the release. \n“A solid and compelling record from an artist who continues to grow with eachnew album.” — Mark Deming\,All Music Guide \n“Klein has a voice worth reckoning with and lyrics worth hearing.” — Bernard Zuel\, Sydney Morning Herald \nIn 2005 Strawberry Lover debuted as #1 most added on Triple A the week before its release.

SUMMARY:DAN BERN
DESCRIPTION:Dan Bern\nDAN BERN – BIOGRAPHY\nBern’s father was a concert pianist who emigrated from Lithuania to Palestine in 1939\, a Jew who was one step ahead of the Nazis. Later he met and married Bern’s mother\, a German Jew\, a singer and poet who had also escaped the ravages of World War II. In the late 1950s they emigrated again and settled in Mt. Vernon\, Iowa\, where Bern was reared\, the cello-playing\, baseball-loving progeny of two Old World artists in the American heartland. In time Bern found the guitar\, and his way to the West Coast\, whre he got his footing in the neo-folk music scene in Los Angeles in the early 1990s. He put out his first album in 1997. Breathe is his seventh. In between\, he’s amassed a strong underground following\, built in part on his prodigious output of intellectual and topical songs. He’s frequently been compared to Bob Dylan\, because like the young Dylan\, he’s funny and smart and has a regally Semitic nose. \nLike Lenny Bruce\, Bern can also be joyously obscene\, which shouldn’t be obscene at all\, as well as tender and even devout. “God Said No\,” a wistful song from New American Language\, continues a device he’s fond of: Bern’s persona interrogates God and indulges in a little speculative time travel. It sports a sensibility that seems to derive as much from Yiddish folk tales as Douglas Adams’s “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy.” \n“There’s a long history of that kind of thing\,” Bern said. “I recall reading things where a man is talking to God–the Bible’s full of that. I kind of feel the same way about that as I do about songwriting. People say\, ‘Why do you write songs?’ and I say\, ‘Why did you stop?’ You know\, little kids make up songs\, it’s a natural thing… and then one day they stop\, some of them.” \n“They told us in high school that writers write\, and when they don’t write they read\,” he said. “The writers that I love\, some of them are songwriters\, but a lot of them are story writers. The best of the lot\, at least my favorite ones\, are not writers that write in florid strokes so much as very vivid ones\, like James Thurber and Ring Lardner\, Charles Bukowski\, John Fante\, Hemingway. They’re not writers who are so in love with their own words; the picture’s what’s important. \n“When I was making this record\, New American Language\, it was like\, ‘Let’s be in service to the song — what do the songs want\, what does the story want\, what do the themes want?’ It’s hard to get out of your own way. When people are trying to master their craft\, it’s more about learning to get out of the way.”

SUMMARY:JOSH HARTY/ SATCHEL PAIGE/ ROD PICOTT
DESCRIPTION:Josh Harty Satchel Paige Rod Picott \nA great evening of song-swapping- it’s almost not right that you can hear all this talent for only $5. \nAbout Rod’s latest CD-\nWELDING BURNS: Rod Picott is back with a beautifully crafted new CD. Welding Burns is a fully realized songwriting marvel with characters so vivid the songs play like intimate 3 minute noir movies. Picott’s ragged and soulful voice spins songs of loss\, desire\, rapture and work while pedal steel guitar winds elegantly throughout the album. Welding Burns is an album about scars of the skin and scars of the heart. Three songs; “Welding Burns”\, “Black T-Shirt” and “Rust Belt Fields” are co-written by Rod’s longtime collaborator Slaid Cleaves. \nOf Madisonian via North Dakota Josh Harty–\n“Harty has a warm\, intimate performance style. You can ease into his songs from the first note and his voice has that perfect combination of resignation and hope. The songs are all downbeat\, even mournful\, and Harty’s performances are utterly convincing\, whether on the doom-laden “Whiskey & Morphine”\, the more upbeat tune (but downbeat lyrics) of “Sweet Solution” or an excellent cover of Brooks West’s “6th Avenue”.” Americana UK \nAbout Satchel Paige–\nWilly Porter recently weighed in with uberpraise for Satch’s recording Faulty Wiring.

You are in for a very entertaining evening.” Village Voice \n“This man is a great artist – his songs are finely-crafted and richly textured\, with immediately memorable melodies and thought provoking lyrics\, and his guitar playing is simply gorgeous\, alternating between subtle finger picking. SUMMARY:BIG BANG STRING THING
DESCRIPTION:BIG BANG STRING THING It’s rare when the word acoustic conjures thoughts of music that can electrify the jump in your feet. Then again\, BBST is a rare group\, and an impressive collective of musical might. Energetic\, contagious\, and flat out fun\, BBST weaves a sizzling thread through multiple genres to deliver a tapestry of award-winning original music that defies one description\,yet\, connects with everyone. Perhaps that has a something to do with the fact that BBST is made up of veteran musicians who have toured\, recorded\, or shared the stage with Leo Kottke\, The String Cheese Incident\, Lyle Lovett\, The Smashing Pumpkins\, Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, U2\, Asleep at the Wheel\, Garbage\, Willy Porter\, Riders in the Sky\, The Radiators\, David Grisman\, Alex DeGrassi\, Doc Watson\, Carrie Newcomer\, and Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band to name a few. Or\, it could simply be that Big Bang String Thing knows how to craft a great sound. \nTHE BAND: \nBob Westfall (mandolin\, guitar\, vocals\, songwriting) has studied and worked with some of the top acoustic players in the country -Darol Anger\, Mike Marshall\, John Hartford\, and Alex DeGrassi. But\, while these influences are certainly evident\, Westfall’s songwriting are uniquely his own. An award-winning mandolinist\, Bob grew up in Texas and Minnesota\, and his style incorporates the best elements of storytelling with a hybrid jazz/pop/worldbeat/bluegrass feel. \nThe husband and wife team ofMary Gaines(bass) and Chris Wagoner (violin) provide the bottom and top of the BBST sound\, and have appeared in performance and on recordings with Westfall for over fifteen years. Gaines and Wagoner have similarly diverse backgrounds — formal classical training at the Univ. of WI\, jazz studies with the great bassist\, Richard Davis\, followed by years of performing and recording with jazz\, blues\, rock\, and folk artists and songwriters. \nMicah Olsan (guitar) has been an active performer in the Midwest music scenes for the last five years. His diverse songwriting mixes elements of folky acoustic fingerstyle\, funk\, rock\, and world music into a distinct sound that will leave your head bobbing and your toes tapping. His guitar work was recognized in the 2010 Shepherd Express reader poll when he was awarded runner up for best guitarist. He has been playing with BBST for the last 5 years.

SUMMARY:JOHN SIEGER/ LARRY PENN/ MARK DVORAK
DESCRIPTION:A whoppin’ night of great music with three great guys: \nLarry Penn sings and tells stories of hard work\, working people\, trains\, trucks\, life on the road\, love\, nonsense\, and flamingos. Noted for their elegance in simplicity\, his songs are not only popular with audiences\, but are acclaimed by other artists\, many of whom have recorded their own renditions of Larry’s songs.  He has had a long and stellar career\, but may not be performing much longer. \nHis performances are delightful. Please come out and help make this a special night for him. \nMark Dvorak    plays folk and blues on banjo and guitar – carrying on the tradition of stalwarts like the above-lauded Mr. Penn.   “Mark is a charismatic performer with a spark of gentle passion that lights every concert hall and every greenway where he lifts his voice in celebration of the old songs. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer who follows unerringly in the footsteps of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie\,” and his song writing has been called “wondrous” and “profound.” \nLike Larry\,  John Sieger is another Milwaukee gem\, known as a prolific and talented songwriter.  He has been in numerous Milwaukee bands\, including the R&B Cadets\, Semi-Twang\, the SubContinentals. Roots rock\, country\, R&B- John runs the gamut.

SUMMARY:TISH HINOJOSA
DESCRIPTION:Tish Hinojosa\nTish Hinojosa’s music crosses borders – between cultures\, languages and musical genres. Moving with equal grace through folk\, country\, pop and latino styles\, her music reflects contemporary America’s multicultural richness. Combining a vision that embraces all of these musical styles\, with her characteristic warmth and a pure\, soulful voice\, this enchanting Texan singer-songwriter has gained a loving and loyal audience throughout America\, Europe and beyond. \nAs the youngest of thirteen children born to Mexican immigrant parents in San Antonio\, TX\, Tish grew up listening to the traditional Mexican songs on her parents’ radio as well as to the pop and folk stations of the 60’s. Inspired by these diverse influences\, she began playing and singing\, first for her family and then later in local clubs and coffee houses. In 1979\, she left her hometown for the mountains of New Mexico\, where she discovered her love for pure and heartfelt country music. She started performing with legendary country musicians Michael Martin Murphy and Bill and Bonnie Hearne\, which inspired her to begin writing her own songs\, both in English and Spanish. After a stint in Nashville\, Tish – by now married and mother of two children – moved back to New Mexico where she made her first independent release (Taos to Tennessee – 1987)\, before finally re-locating to Austin\, TX\, where she was eagerly welcomed by the city’s thriving music scene. In 1988\, she was signed by A & M Records and finally achieved a national debut release. Homeland (1989)\, found her weaving all the threads of her artistic ethos into an intriguing tapestry that immediately put her on the international musical map. \nSince then\, a continuous stream of recordings and numerous American and European tours have brought Tish’s music to the attention of an ever-growing audience. To date\, she has released 15 albums\, all of which beautifully display her ability to distill her diverse musical influences and colourful life experiences into a sound which is distinctively her own. Her releases explore a wide variety of styles: from the perfect balance of country\, folk and latino elements on the award-winning Culture Swing (1992) or the collection of Mexican love ballads and border songs on all-Spanish Frontejas (1995)\, to the delicate mysticism of Dreaming From The Labyrinth (1996) or the joyful optimism on her bilingual children’s record Cada Niño/Every Child (1996). Sign Of Truth\, released in 2000\, added yet another facet to Tish’s sound. Influenced by the divorce from her long-time partner and other transitions occurring in her life\, the songs on this album show her revealing a more personal\, intimate\, yet independent side. \nTish has contributed her talent to numerous issues such as bilingual education\, immigration and farm workers’ rights. She has also performed by invitation at the White House for Bill and Hillary Clinton. She has gained the respect and admiration of many well-established musicians\, not only her contemporaries\, but also some of those who were important early influences\, including Linda Ronstadt\, who later recorded her own version of Tish’s song “Donde voy”. Amongst other artists that Tish has recorded and worked with are Joan Baez\, Kris Kristofferson\, Dwight Yoakam\, Nanci Griffith\, Pete Seeger\, Flaco Jimenez and Los Lobos. \nTish’s latest CD\, Our Little Planet\, will be released on CRS Records in October 2008. Inspired by her rediscovered love for country music\, the 12 self-penned songs on this collection feature a deeply Americana mix of traditional bluegrass and Tish’s trademark sound of contemporary folk and tex-mex. The album is produced by Tish and her long-time accompanist\, Marvin Dykhuis\, who also co-wrote the title song\, as well as playing most of the instruments. It also features appearances by celebrated pedal-steel player\, Greg Leisz\, duets with Texas country legends Rosie Flores and Dale Watson\, as well as with rising star\, Carrie Rodriguez\, all of which combine to add delightful new textures to Our Little Planet’s stripped-down country sound.

SUMMARY:MICHAEL JOHNSON
DESCRIPTION:MICHAEL JOHNSON has performed and lived more music and recorded more hits than you would imagine. \nHis voice immediately identifies him as the man who sings “Bluer Than Blue\,” “Give Me Wings\,” “That’s That\,” and other landmark songs. His music shows a diversity\, depth and heart that only come from years of dedication to a labor of love. \nWhen asked what he would have you know about himself\, Michael says: \n “Tell them that I love it.” He started playing at age thirteen and just never quit. Singing\, playing\, writing and recording are the only things he’s ever done and he loves it. \n “Tell them I play guitar.” He really plays guitar. He studied in Barcelona and he plays on all his records with a unique and distinctive style. His playing is an important part of his show. \n “I am a soloist at heart.” Michael often performs alone\, and he has elevated the art. He prefers the intimacy and spontaneity of a show that can change with the moment. \n “Tell them I’m a showman. I like to talk to people and I love to make them laugh. And\, of course\, I have to move them with the music. That’s the whole thing. Without that\, there is no reason to be on stage.” \nWhat one remembers of Michael is the texture of his voice\, the meaning of the lyric and the music of the guitar — singer\, song and sound. And the feeling of being at home with a friend.
