SUMMARY:LOS ZOMBIES
DESCRIPTION:The Zombies will do a regular (as regular as anything gets for the Carpe or the Zombies) 3rd Thursday of each month gig here. \nPlaying music that would make the Lorine Niedecker Poetry Foundation start mumbling verses of Virgil\, Los Zombies keep it high and keep it getting higher* . Then when it seems really high they go even more higherer. After a brief stint as a military entertainment band touring Afghanistan and other even more top secreter regions the “Zombies” moved to Ixonia and began assembling a crackerjack team of future-musician-warriors with tactics that could blow up any stage (using zen and other non-western mystical sounding techniques\, like haiku\, for example). They then set their sites on THE CARPE. A frothy bunch of anti-war peaceniks\, well-meaning environmentalists\, and probably vegetarians–the locals at The Carpe were (and are) more than this lurid\, deep thinking bunch of hawks could endure\, and to boot\, right in the aorta of the heartland. So re-boot Los Zombies 6.0 and check out this unusually artful and extremely glamorous parade of good taste and high born contempt for the working man and all he stands for\, or makes\, or whatever. LONG LIVE THE LEISURE CLASS AND THE WARS WE FUND!!\nLos Zombies consists of Sgt. Casey Davis\, Col. Steve Tesmer\, Black Belt Certified Matt Kelly\, and Phd. Jeremy “Guzzo” Pinc. \n*Los Zombies LLC. does not endorse the use of drugs in most circumstances. Ask your doctor which drug may be right for you.

SUMMARY:SMALL POTATOES
DESCRIPTION:Small Potatoes: This Chicago based folk duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso say it has taken them years of careful indecision to develop a repertoire they describe as “Celtic to Cowboy.” Superb musicianship and showmanship\, award-winning songwriting\, and a strong sense of tradition has made them\, as Dirty Linen Magazine once said\, “one of the most polished\, inventive\, and entertaining shows on the circuit.”

SUMMARY:Poetry and Music with CATHYRN COFELL & OBVIOUS DOG
DESCRIPTION:Obvious Dog has performed their own blues and jazz throughout Wisconsin since 2001. In 2009 they (Bill Orth and Bruce Dethlefsen) joined forces with poet Cathryn Cofell to fuse poetry and music in a way that rocks and rolls antiquated notions of what makes us sing. Both Bruce and Cathryn are highly-published\, award-winning poets and regional performance favorites\, frequently requested for public radio and TV\, readings\, workshops and keynotes. Since the debut of the CD Lip in 2010\, Obvious Dog has performed to packed houses throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. \n“Cofell’s writing is refreshing\, fast forward\, deep diving\, free flowing\, free for all\, shocking\, heartbreaking\, tear jerking\, hilarious\, yearning\, Thelma & Louise\, fearless\, laying there in front of you just clear and murky as life. Tiny Little Crushes is a thousand points of light that have passed through Cofell’s colored glasses and been poured out into your eyes. She is so smart\, hip\, fast\, and real.”\nCharles P. Ries / Poetry Editor / Word Riot \nBill Orth has played guitar\, bass guitar and sang for 50+ years\, an accomplished musician in numerous rock\, blues and jazz bands. Within the last 10 years he has recorded two cds of original music with the band ‘annaRANaway’. Many of his compositions have been created with ‘annaRANaway’ bandmate\, Bruce Dethlefsen; together they now perform this and new material as Obvious Dog. \nBruce Dethlefsen is Wisconsin’s Poet Laureate. His collection Breather (Fireweed Press)\, won an Outstanding Achievement award from the Wisconsin Library Association. He also has two chapbooks\, A Decent Reed and Something Near the Dance Floor\, and his poems were featured twice on The Writer’s Almanac. He plays bass\, harmonica\, and drums and performs original music with poetry as Obvious Dog. \nDuring the break\, the following poets will poetize in their singular fashion. \nRichard Roe began writing poetry in his mid-30s and has kept at it ever since. A preacher’s kid who’s lived in Ohio and New Jersey\, he has a background in history and economics but\, more importantly\, in music\, often playing music to accompany his poems. He has published three books of poems\, most recently Knots of Sweet Longing. If he could start over\, he would like to sing in opera\, especially the rôles of Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Boris in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. \nKarla Huston writes in Appleton\, Wisconsin\, and is the author of six chapbooks of poetry\, most recently An Inventory of Lost Things\, Centennial Press\, 2009. Winner of several writing awards\, she has published poetry\, reviews and interviews in many state and national journals. Her poem “Theory of Lipstick” was awarded a Pushcart Prize and appears in The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses (2012).

SUMMARY:BILL STAINES
DESCRIPTION:Bill Staines\, a seasoned troubador singing mostly his own songs\, has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today\, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65\,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances and one reviewer wrote\, “He has a sense of timing to match the best standup comic.” \n“Any new song that can live comfortably beside the well-worn songs of folk tradition has a good chance of surviving the test of time. Such\, we believe\, are the songs of Bill Staines” — Charles “Sandy” Paton\, Folk Legacy Records

SUMMARY:GARNET ROGERS
DESCRIPTION:Garnet Rogers has established himself as “One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music.” \nResolutely independent\, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way.

SUMMARY:STEVE FORBERT / Sammy Llanas
DESCRIPTION:Steve Forbert\nGrowing up in Meridian\, Steve Forbert first picked up the guitar at age 10 and spent his high school years playing in a variety of local bands. Frustrated with his job as a truck driver\, the restless singer/songwriter moved to New York City at 21\, where he performed for spare change in Grand Central Station before working his way up through the Manhattan club circuit. Performing at Folk City and eventually opening for artists like Talking Heads and John Cale at CBGB\, Forbert became something of a local sensation and signed his first record deal with the CBS-distributed label Nemperor. \nReleased at the height of the new wave explosion\, his 1978 debut Alive On Arrival offered a first look at his colorful mix of spare acoustic introspection and scrappy rock ‘n’ roll and became one of the year’s most acclaimed albums. While critics tagged him—like Bruce Springsteen and John Prine before him—“the next Dylan\,” Forbert never put too much stock in the comparison and forged his own path\, expanding his audience substantially with 1979’s commercial breakthrough Jackrabbit Slim and his era defining hit single\, “Romeo’s Tune.” \nBy this time\, the heyday of the classic 70s singer-songwriters was quickly fading. Songs by America\, Carole King\, James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot were quickly giving way on the pop charts to Van Halen\, Foreigner and Pat Benatar. As the seventies gave way to the eighties\, Forbert’s plainspoken\, heartfelt early recordings were among the few keeping the joyful and innocent spirit of the genre alive. \nGiven the mythic nature of Forbert’s early career\, one can be forgiven for wondering what he’s done since parting company with Geffen Records after they released The American in Me in 1992. The fact is that Steve Forbert has never stopped writing\, singing and performing and has released twelve studio albums\, three live sets and four DVDs since 1978 – to say nothing of the several compilations and archival releases that are available through his website. \nAs frosting on the cake\, Sam Llanas\, formerly one of the Bodeans\, will open.

SUMMARY:KAIA FOWLER
DESCRIPTION:Kaia‘s reemergence as a performing artist in 2008 led to the release of her solo CD\, Seams of My Heart in 2010. Since then\, Kaia has expanded into the Madison area and beyond performing regularly and selling her CD at shows and online. \nThe recording project enabled Kaia to work with outstanding musicians including Randy Sabien\, who brought his violin and mandolin wizardry to the album\, and Sam Steffke whose keyboard skills adorn the jazzy song “Let Him Be.” Local dobro master Paul Bast also appears on three songs on the album. \nFollowing the release of Seams of My Heart\, Kaia was invited to play her song “Who Are You?” as a guest at Michelle Shocked’s concert in Madison\, September of 2010. Encouraged by Shocked\, who wrote “Thanks for sharing your voice and talent with my audience\, Kaia. What a beautiful song!” \nKaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical metaphors\, intense melodies and experimental chord use. Her voice\, while distinct\, has subtle similarities to Natalie Merchant\, being similarly supple\, strong and alluring. Other influences have included Carole King\, the Indigo Girls\, Carrie Newcomer\, Sarah McClachlan\, Patty Griffin and Paul Simon. \nSeams of My Heart earned a glowing review from the Americana Gazette and airplay on the Women of Substance online radio station. Andy Ziehli of The Americana Gazette says of Kaia’s songs\, “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” He continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010)

SUMMARY:KELLY JOE PHELPS
DESCRIPTION:Kelly Joe Phelps \nA writer at the San Diego Troubadour described guitarist and songwriter Kelly Joe Phelps as\, “The Phantom Monk Of Folk- Blues\,” and rightly so. Over the past 17 years of recording and touring\, Phelps has been talked about as much for his passionate\, spirit-driven\, lone musical ways as for the inventiveness of his playing and singing. A New York Times concert reviewer wrote: “…his airy playing conjuring a pocket of supernatural space. He manipulated his fretboard to create eerie harmonics as he slipped from a mumble to a falsetto\, as if to follow the soul beyond the physical realm.” Uncut magazine\, reviewing a London show\, wrote: “…to ripple and snake into unknown territory for the country blues he allegedly played\, to squeeze out sounds touching the searching jazz that had once been his trade\, to mutate through more layers than twelve strings should hold. And the songs – their pleas for mercy beyond the grave healed the spirit in ways disbelievers\, in bibles or blues\, could feel.” \nKelly Joe is an improviser within the world of folk music. He’ll likely use the same group of songs during one show that he used the previous night\, sure enough\, but the skew will have changed\, the colors and shading moved around. Sometimes\, it seems like the song might even be playing him\, rather than the other way around. “I approach music this way\,” he says\, “to give it a chance to breathe\, walk\, or whisper. Improvising\, even in small amounts\, turns a piece of music into a conversation\, in real time\, with all of the unexpected twists and turns that any conversation is going to have\, even if it’s with someone you talk to all the time. The emotional complexity of us\, in any one moment\, can be musically represented through improvisation as a moment in motion\, like someone thinking\, or worrying\, perhaps\, right this second\, here and now. If there isn’t some part of the unknown or unexpected present\, it seems like an important aspect of being human goes missing. That’s the beauty of spontaneity\, even in the supposed confines of folk music. It allows a character\, a note\, or a chord some time to be alive\, to look for themselves…if I’m doing my job well\, that is.” \nPhelps refers to himself as a folk musician. He deems the folk music story as one continually being written\, and its ultimate definition in fluid motion. “There’s still a lot of work for us musicians to do\,” he considers\, “and a lot more music to find. We have to keep our eyes and ears open\, and keep moving forward\, and continue to learn.” The culture website PopMatters\, reviewing Kelly’s CD ‘Western Bell’\, figured he had work to do as well\, but clearly as the Phantom Monk: “When a listener resigns him or herself to intently listening to Kelly’s lone guitar\, fighting back the darkness one plunk at a time\, an odd sort of poetry arises: like a hero of the high plains\, roaming nameless to wherever God deems his services necessary\, Phelps speaks directly to your soul. If that isn’t the stuff of legends\, I don’t know what is.”

SUMMARY:CLAUDIA SCHMIDT
DESCRIPTION:Almost four decades as a touring professional have found Michigan native Claudia Schmidt traversing North America as well as Europe in venues ranging from intimate clubs to 4\,000 seat theatres\, and festival stages in front of 25\,000 rapt listeners. She has recorded fourteen albums of mostly original songs\, exploring folk\, blues\, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. \n“To say that Schmidt is simply a performer with a talent to entertain would be a miscarriage of understatement. Schmidt takes her audiences into her world as easily as the child who discovers the endless universes that exist in a cardboard box. \nFrom lying on sandy beaches under an endless barrage of northern lights\, to the expected anguish and frustration of spinning tires on cars stuck deep in snow\, from the age-old struggle of change between adolescence and adulthood to the observation of sheer idiocy\, she leaves it to the imagination of her audience to conjure their own images of her storytelling and song. No interpretation of a Claudia Schmidt song or story is wrong-she invites audiences to tie their associations to her style. \nSchmidt weaves her way through her concert in much the same manner as a jester. Interwoven anecdotes\, revealing her past and present\, bring people to expect a relationship between themselves and memories driven deep with the passage of time. The concert is an endless display of self-realization through humor and longing\, leaving audience members yearning to become an integral part of her world.”\nDoor County Advocate

SUMMARY:THE NEW PIONEERS
DESCRIPTION:This five piece outfit featuring vocals\, banjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass and mandolin do a once-a-month performance here\, usually the 2nd Thursday. But this is the third Thursday. It’s the Ides of March\, beware already. \nIts various members have been involved with traditional music locally\, regionally\, and nationally for many years. \nThe Pioneer’s lead singer and guitarist\, Jerry Wicentowski\, has been described by country music historian Bill Malone as “One of the finest singers in bluegrass music”. Jerry has also performed and recorded with such bluegrass greats as Tim O’Brien\, Andy Statman\, Byron Berline\, Tony Trischka and others. (Jerry Wisentowski will be gone until March recovering from surgery.) Mike Schmidt of Spring Green\, Wisconsin\, is the group’s banjo player. This former French horn player has been a Nashville session musician and member of the popular Wisconsin-based bluegrass bands\, Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ and the Piper Road Spring Band. He also performs occasionally with his wife Lori. Bruce King of Art Stevenson and High Water – also formerly of Alive ‘n’ Pickin’ – is on mandolin. Bruce and Mike are veterans of the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival in Mole Lake\, WI – performing there every year from 1977 to 1982. Fiddle player Paul Kienitz is a member in good standing of regional bluegrass favorites\, The Nob Hill Boys. Bass player John Jirak also has played banjo with various folks in the northeastern WI and Madison areas\, most notably with the Green Bay based Fox River Flyer. As a bass player\, he’s performed shows with the Chicago Bluegrass Band\, Miltown Ramblers\, Krause Family\, Old Cool\, Spare Time Bluegrass Band\, Bob Steeno and The Old Truck\, and Down From the Hills\, and currently Madison’s newest\, Kettle Moraine.

SUMMARY:CARRIE ELKIN & DANNY SCHMIDT
DESCRIPTION:TWO GREAT ARTISTS – ONE GREAT NIGHT! \nIt’s a special treat when Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin\, who normally tour separately and solo\, get to share the stage together. If the chemistry seems especially sparkful\, they come by it honestly\, as they are a rare breed: a romantic partnership in real life\, not just musical life. And the two together on stage makes for a classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. \nDanny Schmidt is best known for his riveting poetic lyrics\, which have drawn favorable comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt for their depth and complexity. And gypsy spirit Carrie Elkin is best known for her incredibly soulful and dynamic vocals\, which have drawn favorable comparisons to Patty Griffin at her most powerful\, and Nanci Griffith at her most intimate. \nTogether\, the respective strengths they each bring\, individually\, merge into a much greater whole . . . a performance of great energy and spirit . . . and one that audiences seem to be able to connect with on a multitude of levels\, at once: Emotionally\, Spiritually\, and Intellectually. \nOn Danny: \nNamed to the Chicago Tribune’s 50 Most Significant Songwriters in the Last 50 Years\, Austin\, TX-based singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt has been rapidly ascending from underground cult hero status to being broadly recognized as an artist of generational significance. Danny is considered a preeminent writer\, an artist whose earthy poetry manages to somehow conjure magic from the mundane\, leading Sing Out Magazine to tag him: “Perhaps the best new songwriter we’ve heard in the last 15 years.” \n“In today’s underground folk world\, Danny Schmidt is spoken of in reverent tones\, drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen\, with a poetry that breathes naturally and without pretension\, with results that are both attractive and intense.”\n– Austin Chronicle \n“This songsmith has been churning out brilliant\, poetic songs on the human condition coupled with dazzling technique on his guitar strings for almost a decade.”\n– Jay Trachtenberg\, KUT Radio in Austin \n“With beautifully crafted\, lonesome pines music and complex beguiling words\, he would’ve fitted neatly on the bill at any ’60s coffee house alongside Townes Van Zandt or Leonard Cohen.”\n– Q Magazine UK \n“His songs\, so lyrically rich\, so finely crafted\, carry the power of fine poetry. They accentuate the narrative. They celebrate subtlety. Schmidt’s songs are filled with nimble wordplay and cool cadences; they move with the light feet of a dancer. But in the tone and theme\, they convey weight and depth and substance.”\n– Austin American-Statesman \nOn Carrie: \nAustin\, TX-based Carrie Elkin is a born performer\, possessing an infectious energy that cannot be contained. As Maverick Magazine so eloquently put it: “We have never seen a performer so in love with the act of singing. Onstage Elkin is simply a force of nature.” With her dazzling voice and unpretentious charm\, Carrie wins over audiences with songs that are\, as FolkWax puts it: “Intimate\, yet universal. Naked\, yet richly adorned. Her voice is simply revelatory.” \n“I have never seen a performer so in love with the act of singing. That’s the gospel truth\, and from what I’ve subsequently learned I’m not the only one to believe or state that. Onstage Elkin was simply a force of nature….”\nMaverick Magazine \n“Carrie Elkin’s fourth release resounds with a sense of warm\, earthy poetry that combines a strong folk/soul framework\, her own sweet-toned but characterful vocals and quietly offbeat writing that never seems wilfully eccentric.”\nMaverick Magazine \n“I’m thinking Patty Griffin\, Nanci Griffith and Iris DeMent….spellbinding from the opening track”\nBBC Radio \nDon’t miss these two great artists in a rare split-bill performance\, sharing songs back and forth\, lending their voices to each other’s tunes\, in harmony. And lending commentary to each other’s tunes\, in the form of smart-ass between-song banter.

SUMMARY:MALCOLM HOLCOMBE
DESCRIPTION:Malcolm is\n“Not quite country\, somewhere beyond folk\, Holcombe’s music is a kind of blues in motion\,\nmapping backwoods corners of the heart.” ~David Fricke- Rolling Stone Magazine \nSinger/songwriter Lucinda Williams\, who knows a thing about country and the blues\, has said of Holcombe’s release\, “From the first note I was drawn in. Malcolm Holcombe is an old soul and modern day blues poet. He is a rare find.” \n“Years ago\, following Malcolm Holcombe’s career could be as unnerving and high-wire suspenseful as his riveting live performances. His brilliance was obvious to a core of fans and some attentive music journalists\, but so were the self-destructive tendencies that floated around this mercurial man like wraiths. We worried at times that we’d have to add Holcombe to the What Might Have Been pantheon with Hank Williams\, Jaco Pastorius and Charlie Parker. We imagined talking about Holcombe in the past tense to the too many who’d never been able to hear his shockingly truthful and affecting voice. \nBy the grace of God however\, there is no past tense in Holcombe’s life and career\, just a very vibrant present and a widening sense of tomorrow’s possibilities. He is many years sober\, performing worldwide and happily married to a woman who manages his schedule and keeps his inner garden clear for the work. He retains his quirky\, fascinating character\, and he writes – in spasms of energy and clarity\, producing visions that hover between earthy solidity and rustic mysticism. He plays with rhythmic pounce and sings with psychological fire. And if the songs on his new album To Drink The Rain are a good indication\, he’s working from a place of joy and balance. \n“If you’ve not seen him in a live setting\, this is what you have to do. His presence is spooky and timeless\, as one imagines it was like to see Son House or Leadbelly. No emotional stone is left unturned. While you plan for this important experience\, collect Malcolm Holcombe albums\, starting with this one [To Drink the Rain\, his latest]. He is cryptic\, demanding\, polarizing\, bold\, passionate and free\, a combination badly needed in our time of infinite trivia. He’s even more interesting for having made a remarkable journey of recovery and discovery.”\nCraig Havighurst\, Nashville

SUMMARY:DAVE RAMONT & DAVE NELSON
DESCRIPTION:Dave Ramont with Dave Nelson- Call it Americana\, roots-pop\, folk-slop\, whatever- Dave (Ramont) aims to spread these songs around like a thin layer of grease on a cast iron skillet. And when no one’s looking he’ll likely kick something down the street… \nWatch them here . \n
Differentiating oneself in the burgeoning field of alternative-country artists is a tricky proposition these days\, but Dave Ramont stands tall in the crowd. On Scrawny\, his third CD\, the Chicago-based singer-songwriter imbues his acoustic-based compositions with a rustic charm that’s unfettered and right to the point. Employing a variety of roots-oriented instrumentation that includes banjo\, mandolin\, and accordion\, Ramont constructs minimalist arrangements that frame his sturdy melodies in softly lit settings.\nHigh points on the CD include the cloppity\, reggae-tinged “Coat\,” the cowboy waltz “I Wanna Marry a Waitress\,” and the hymn-like\, string laden “Shoestring” (which features fine backing vocals from fellow Chicago singer Marylou O’Brien Fischer).\nPitching in on Scrawny is a tight-knit ensemble that adds subtle musical shades to Ramont’s plucked acoustic guitar and soulful\, twang-tinged tenor. Of particular note are Tom Jancauskas (bass)\, Gerald Dowd (drums)\, Scott Stevenson (accordion)\, Larry Rossi (horns)\, and Dave Nelson (National steel\, dobro\, and dulcimer).\nFrom start to finish\, Scrawny glows with a minimalist\, incandescent beauty.
\nRussell Hall
Performing Songwriter \nDave Nelson has major credentials as a member of the popular midwestern band Heartsfield: “Soulful\, down-home sound. Distinct vocal harmonies. Rootsy\, swampy\, foot-stompin’ country rock with bits of folk and jazz blended in. A ‘guitar army’ backed up with fiddle\, mandolin\, jaw harp and drums\, Heartsfield is a slice of Americana. ”\nLee B. Roberts\, The Journal Times

SUMMARY:PEARL & THE BEARD
DESCRIPTION:Pearl and the Beard is three voices\, one cello\, one guitar\, one glockenspiel\, one melodica\, several drums\, one accordion\, ninety-six teeth\, and one soul. \nFormer strangers Jocelyn Mackenzie\, Emily Hope Price\, and Jeremy Styles were united in the great city of New York. Each had migrated there from a far corner of the nation with naught but food in their pockets and money in their bellies. Each had the same true love. Since then\, the three have nested\, and their unique brand of brightly melodic songcraft continues to blossom of its own accord. \nThe band’s genre-bending and expectation-defying sound has since burst the trio out of the confines of the New York music scene\, allowing them to traipse the United States on a multitude of national tours and across the pond for a hugely successful inaugural UK tour in 2011. They’ve caught the attention of The Boston Globe\, Filter Magazine\, The Wall Street Journal and thousands of wildly dedicated fans both local and international. Their haunting music video for “The Lament of Coronado Brown” even made its debut on NPR’s acclaimed music site\, All Songs Considered. \nPearl and the Beard’s live show is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. The band captivates their audience from first note to last\, leaving fans and press alike completely engrossed in the world they’ve created with their soaring and sensual songs. From subway platform to park to field to brightly lit venue stage\, Pearl and the Beard take over whatever space they occupy\, including the people occupying it with them\, prompting The Wall Street Journal to comment “…as Pearl and the Beard joyfully belted… to a growing crowd on the [subway] platform… commuters missed their trains to stay and listen\, unsure what was happening—only that it was a New York moment not to be missed.”

SUMMARY:WILLY PORTER / LJ BOOTH
DESCRIPTION:Willy Porter and LJ Booth both hail from Wisconsin\, mostly\, have written a few songs together\, are both articulate and entertaining and great musicians. What’s not to like? \nLocal (Milwaukee)hero Willy– what about him? \n“Porter plays intelligent\, groove — heavy folk with hearty abandon”\n— Santa Fe New Mexican \n“With his exquisite\, tranquil guitar work\, Willy Porter could easily astonish an audience without singing one note. His ability to engage the audience with his personality and intellect raises Porter from the level of guitar wonk into the realm of masterful performer.”\n— Earvolution \n“Willy Porter is a relaxed and fearless performer who’ll entertain you as well as move you.”\n— Acoustic Guitar Magazine\n“Porter accentuates well – rendered tales with spit – fire – percussive acoustic guitar strumming and fiery color – chord picking.”\n— Billboard \n“…[How To Rob A Bank] will remain timely for years to come…”\n— The Onion \n“[Willy Porter] can captivate an audience as completely as can an entire rock band.”\n— Washington Times \nAnd that LJ Booth\, what does he have going for him? \n“Seasoned performers are priceless in the era of short-term ‘discoveries’\, and LJ Booth is among the most adept and accomplished songwriters and storytellers in the country. His comfortable presence\, stellar songs\, and stage banter makes for a concert experience that resonates…” Mike Meyer\, KRVM-fm\, Oregon Public Broadcasting\,\nHope Chest Productions \n“LJ Booth is as literate as they come. As a lyricist\, he has the light touch of Lyle Lovett\, the unabashed honesty of Leonard Cohen and the sprawling\, joyous life of Walt Whitman. The plainness of his imagery and the economy of his phrasing is only made more effective by his glittering guitar parts and the simple grace of his songs.” \n“His vocal approach also possesses the effective simplicity of Lyle Lovett with a little Gordon Lightfoot thrown in. On the more raucous tunes like “Hold On!” and the fiddle-driven “Changing Sky”\, Booth is still completely in control\, driving the songs straight through to their satisfying conclusions. But it’s on the quiet moments that Booth really shines\, wheeling through joy\, freedom and longing with simple grace.” Performing Songwriter
