SUMMARY:THE MERRY HORDE- a food pantry benefit
DESCRIPTION:“Loads of Fun\, good music\, great harmonies” are the thoughts that come to mind whenever The Merry Horde performs. The oft repeated phrase following each performance is “…and a good time was had by all”. So join us for a historic romp through a medley of bluegrass\, and selected tunes from the 60’s & 70’s with one of Fort’s own\, locally harvested\, bands. These guys may be getting up there\, but they can still bash out the chords and belt out the harmonies that will make the hair on your arms stand straight up! \nAnd to boot\, this performance is for a good cause; the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry. All proceeds will go to the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry. The music and the fun are free. So bring some canned or packaged goods\, or stop by your favorite ATM on the way down so you can make a cash donation of your choosing to the Food Pantry. Please call the Cafe Carpe 920-563-9391 to reserve seats.

SUMMARY:DEVIL IN THE OUTHOUSE
DESCRIPTION:This blurb from the Devil themself: \nBy now you’ve probably heard about the band splitting up and all the morbid details: Looper (Brian Lucas)’s narcissistic rants and sex tape scandal\, Scott (McCormick)’s repeated visits to rehab\, Blaine’s cosmetic surgery mishap\, and Greg (Valde)’s “monastic retreat.” \nCome find out if there will be a happy reunion or a tragic melee on stage (on Boxing Day\, no less) as Devil in the Outhouse spews forth their 7th annual holiday concert (which is unlikely to include much holiday music). \nThere will\, however\, be folk\, blues\, comedy and psychotherapy and bathroom services available. The show starts at 7:30\, but we encourage you to come early and eat dinner at the Café Carpe. The food is great and we certainly don’t want Kitty and Bill to go out of business. Who else would let us play in such a nice music room? \nWhy: So you can find out if Eric (deported) and Scott (relapse) are allowed to return to Wisconsin and actually show up. Or come to see Looper’s attempt at a Santa Claus beard. Or come for the weird musical combination of guitar\, fiddle\, bass\, harmonica\, and accordion — but mostly come so you can laugh\, drink\, and escape from your dysfunctional family during the holidays. \nRemember to call to reserve.

SUMMARY:Lamplighter-KAI WELCH/ SATCHEL WELCH/ BILL CAMPLIN/ DAVID GOODRICH
DESCRIPTION:NOTA BENE- Will try to start the show at 8pm to get a jump on the snow. Thinking of our traveling friends. \n  \n“GOODY” stays on post-Redbird to lend his talents to a different configuration.   DAVID GOODRICH\, known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, newwave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\, (as well as Bill Camplin) Goody continues to hone a sound all his own. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. Fans of Pat Metheny\, Bill Frisell\, and Ry Cooder will find DUST OF MANY HORSES the perfect companion. \nMulti-instrumentalist (trumpet\, guitar\, piano) KAI WELCH currently lives in Nashville\, TN and has for the last couple of years has been touring the live show of his collaboration with Abigail Washburn on her Rounder Records release\, “City of Refuge”. He has a solo record “Send It Down”. He also collaborates with Carl Broemel (of My Morning Jacket)\, Bobby Bare Jr.\, and The Greencards\, among others. He comes by his talent very naturally as the nephew of one Alison Welch. \nSATCHEL PAIGE Through an accident of birth\, this gentleman has inherited wiring both faulty and first-rate. He’s got him a fine voice and some guitar chops.  Comes by his talent naturally as the son of one Alison Welch. \nBILL CAMPLIN He’s 50% responsible for the above birth. ”the proverbial best singer nobody’s ever heard of”.  Helps to run a small club in southeastern Wisconsin.

SUMMARY:Lamplighter-REDBIRD this Friday show is sold out
DESCRIPTION:Please read LAMPLIGHTER BURNS AGAIN to learn all you need to know about the ins and outs of these shows. \nRedbird is a loose affliction of four fine talents\, the ubiquitous Peter Mulvey\, Jeffrey Foucault\, Kris Delmhorst\, and David Goodrich– all imaginative instrumentalists and singers- who haunt the Cafe Carpe every December. They audially and audaciously and admirably pen a love letter to the body of American song- traditional tunes\, old jazz standards\, country songs\, and things that blur the line between those forms\, and sometimes slur their lines between songs as they spew camaraderie\, joy\, and the magic of live performance.

SUMMARY:LAMPLIGHTER- PETER MULVEY/JOHN STATZ/ AWNA TEIXEIRA/ BEN SCHMIDT
DESCRIPTION:This is likely to be one of those great nights- challenge yourself to go hear people you have not yet heard. \nPETER MULVEY   is a walking secret handshake – the street-singing kid in Dublin\, the funk-master guitar stylist fronting the storming power trio\, the conspiratorial spoken-word craftsman\, the Tin Pan Alley delver\, and all through it he has remained the traveler out on the road\, bringing his music to audiences from Alaska to Spain\, from Ireland to Italy\, in clubs and theaters\, coffeeshops to the Kennedy Center\, by car and -in what is now and annual tradition- by bicycle. Over 20 years\, honing his musicianship\, his phrasing\, his ability to inhabit a song\, he has come fully into his own\, where he stands\, full of grit and warmth\, as an American master. \nBoston Globe: \n“Peter Mulvey is all substance\, which is his style.” \nMojo (UK):\n“Singularly gifted.” \nDavis Enterprise:\n“The cream of the crop… sings with a clarity reserved for the likes of legends.” \nPortuguese-Canadian\, multi-instrumentalist (accordion\, banjo\, guitar\, ukulele\, gutbucket bass\, percussion and lead vocals)\, AWNA TEIXEIRA began her musical career in 2001 performing all over North America and writing songs with various bands before joining Po’Girl\, one of Canada’s hardest working international touring acts\, in 2005. Over the course of creating five albums and seven years of solid-touring in 15 different countries\, on 4 different continents\, and playing between 200 and 250 shows a year\, Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira have become the core of the highly-esteemed and internationally-recognized band\, Po’Girl. Awna\, while still working with Po’Girl\, is currently embarking on her first solo project “Where the Darkness Goes”. \n“I’ll go as far as to say…….. WHERE THE DARKNESS GOES is the album that Nanci Griffith and Dolly Parton have both been trying to produce for several years and Awna Teixeira has taken the first steps on the ladder to emulate their success.” 5/5 No Depresson/Maverick Magazine UK 2012/13 \n“A bag of riches from Po’ Girl front-woman! “Teixeira’s voice is a delightfully gentle instrument; like the elfin sister of Emmylou Harris and Stevie Nicks.” 4/5 Americana UK 2012 \n“It is safe to say there is no one else quite like Awna\, with her quirky take on roots music that combines highlonesome ‘hillbilly’ music with folk and probably more than a nod to her Portugese roots\, the only addition that can really explain this unique rootsy amalgamate of beautiful sounds.” 5/5 American Roots UK 2012 \nJOHN STATZ \nWhen singer/songwriter John Statz isn’t at home in Denver\, Colorado\, he’s out traveling the world\, playing shows and writing and recording in places like Budapest\, Slovenia\, Quebec\, and Anchorage. For his new album\, Old Fashioned\, he is bringing it back home. Whereas the previous album (Ghost Towns) was filled with worldly influences and subject matter\, Old Fashioned brings us back to the heartland: Midwestern America. \nRecorded in Iowa City with revered producer Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams\, Greg Brown\, Pieta Brown) this album is all about deep love\, hard-working Midwestern folk\, nostalgia for times past and of course\, history. \nBEN SCHMIDT \nTwenty-nine year old singer/songwriter Ben Schmidt uses his warm reedy mid range voice and a powerful arsenal of fingerstyle and flatpicked guitar chops to texture his soulful compositions. \nRaised in Chicago\, Mr. Schmidt’s self-taught approach to music is rooted in vintage folk and blues\, but whether by himself on a lap slide guitar\, or in front of a band\, he takes the listener on a unique journey in every song. Since he first picked up a guitar at age twelve\, Schmidt has refined his playing and writing skills\, drawing comparisons to Leo Kotke\, Kelly Joe Phelps\, Tom Waits\, Greg Brown and John Gorka. \nBefore performing as a musican\, Ben Schmidt was variously\, an actor\, teacher\, theatre designer\, bike mechanic\, and carpenter. Schmidt has performed primarily in Eastern Iowa with sporadic appearances in Chicago. His music has been played on KUNI\, WSUI\, KRUI\, and KCCK in Iowa\, and on Chicago’s WFMT folk showcase “The Midnight Special.” Ben has appeared both as a musical guest and as a featured guest artist for NPR’s live radio forum “Iowa Talks” on WSUI. He also been the featured guest of college radio KRUI. \nHis Debut CD is “Write it Down”. He also appears on the “M.U.S.E.“(Musician’s united to save the Englert (theatre)) compilation with Greg Brown\, Dave Moore\, David Zollo\, and other Iowa Artist. Ben Schmidt currently lives with his wife and children in Iowa City\, Ia.

SUMMARY:Lamplighter- PETER MULVEY/ NATALIA ZUKERMAN/ ADRIANNE GONZALEZ/ RALSTON BOWLES
DESCRIPTION:PETER MULVEY \nBoston Globe:\n“Peter Mulvey is all substance\, which is his style.” \nMojo (UK):\n“Singularly gifted.” \nDavis Enterprise:\n“The cream of the crop… sings with a clarity reserved for the likes of legends.” \nNATALIA ZUKERMAN\nWith diverse influences that include Folk\, Jazz\, Blues\, Rock\, Bluegrass\, Country and even Classical\, Natalia Zukerman has been described by public radio as “an example of the finest Americana.” She combines her unique slide guitar playing style with seductive vocals\, a painter’s observing eye\, unapologetic writing\, and sharp wit. Zukerman’s music is as riddled with urban restlessness as it is grounded in rootsy warmth – a welcome contradiction. \n“Natalia’s voice could send an orchid into bloom while her guitar playing can open a beer bottle with its teeth.” –New Yorker\n“a strutting brass band one minute\, a sighing lover the next.” –The Boston Globe\n“a wise mix of rootsy styles from torch blues to country swing. If you’re a fan of Madeleine Peyroux\, Bonnie Raitt or even Amy Winehouse\, you’ll find stuff to connect with here.” –Philadelphia Daily News \nADRIANNE GONZALEZ (AG) \nInfluenced by the likes of Omar Reid\, Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls\, Miami native Adrianne Gonzalez has been writing and performing for over ten years in Miami\, Boston\, Toronto\, Atlanta\, London\, and Los Angeles. She forms a quarter of the harmony-driven quartet “The Rescues\,” whose music has famously underscored many hit TV shows\, including One Tree Hill and Grey’s Anatomy. Adrianne has 9 solo albums to date\, and has toured nationwide and all over Europe as a headliner and opener for many major artists such as Jeff Buckley\, Jackson Browne\, and Tegan And Sara. \n“How do we put this delicately…Adrianne Gonzalez is a fearless beast of artistic expression. Here’s a woman so unafraid of taking risks – so unafraid to be who she is as a musician\, an artist\, a feminist\, an “out” role model – that it’ll be no surprise to us if Gaga’s “little monsters” grow up and start idolizing her instead. AG\, as she’s now know professionally\, has just released an EP of Beatles tunes\, a ballsy move that has resulted in one of the most haunting\, gender/genre bending expressions of musical ingenuity in recent memory. We had no choice but to devote the following pages to her\, in which we trace her early career path\, how she approached new arrangements of classic songs\, and how she’s managed to balance life as a solo musician with her role in the popular LA band The Rescues.” -Performer Magazine \nAdrianne and Natalia are also both visual artists. \nRALSTON BOWLES \n

Countless sounds pour forth when Cebar and his Milwaukeeans take the stage. New Orleans\, Chicago\, New york\, Africa\, Brazil\, Cuba\, jump-blues\, gospel\, jazz\, reggae\, calypso\, soul and vintage R&B are sterting points for something that becomes uniquely Cebar. This mishmash helps reimagine and liven up obscure classics\, and the band’s originals present new viewpoints on established styles.” The Onion AV Club

SUMMARY:THE BLUEGRASS CAVALIERS
DESCRIPTION:The Bluegrass Cavaliers are one of Wisconsin’s finest bluegrass bands…they just didn’t know it. Born out of past endeavors and common bonds they are ready to take the world\, well maybe Fort Atkinson by storm (no small task). The pedigrees run deep with this ensemble\, featuring Monroe Bluegrass Boy alum Mark Hembree on bass\, vocal and loquacious story telling; one of Wisconsin’s finest\, Jon Peik\, on banjo and fashion trend setting; the outstanding flat picking’ guitar and vocalist\, Seth ‘yes he can actually hold a note that long’ Forester; Monroe mandolin disciple and misplaced ‘Chicago Bears’ fan oddly infatuated by the team color\, Brian Ray; and last but not least (but very close)\, Wisconsin ‘longbow’ fiddler and frugalist\, Paul Kienitz.\nCome enjoy an evening of illuminating laments about loves lost\, interpersonal tensions and unwanted changes…the Bluegrass Cavaliers.

SUMMARY:HAYWARD WILLIAMS/ Hugh Masterson
DESCRIPTION:HAYWARD WILLIAMS We know how to grow ’em in Wisconsin. \n“Looking at the bespectacled youth peering out from the album bio\, you would never expect the smoky authoritative voice that swells from Cotton Bell. But maybe Williams’ appearance belies his age\, this being the Milwaukee singer-songwriter’s third full length album. Williams’ is the voice of maturity and restraint\, and by voice I mean not only his deep\, resonant singing\, but his approach\, attitude\, songwriting – the whole deal. Full of gentle\, tender songs beautifully recorded\, Cotton Bell presents nothing groundbreaking or startling. But the deeper you listen\, the further you appreciate those sounds and songs. Dan McMahon’s guitar and pedal steel and dobro are consistently grace full and as a co-producer\, he’s clearly a crucial ingredient to the impact of Cotton Bell. Strings and harmonies flesh out the songs beautifully throughout – Third track in ‘Mockingbird’ is a great example\,just gorgeous to listen to\, a breathtaking guitar solo\, strings and harmonies swelling and subsiding\, and Williams’ vocal melody glowing throughout.” Rhythms Magazine Australia

SUMMARY:SMALL POTATOES
DESCRIPTION:Small Potatoes has called themselves eclecto-maniacs and described their music as “Celtic to Cowboy”. They say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country\, blues\, and swing to Irish\, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Their four recordings\, “Alive!”\, “Waltz of the Wallflowers”\, “Time Flies” and “Raw” demonstrate that “indecision” can be wonderfully entertaining. They both sing\, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. \n“Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso combine cleverly witty with powerfully poignant songs\, along with well chosen covers to present an unusually entertaining and involving repertoire engagingly delivered. Prezioso’s song “1000 Candles\, 1000 Cranes” is one of the most outstanding songs of the past 50\nyears.” Rich Warren\, The Midnight Special – WFMT Radio\, Chicago\, IL\n\nWhen you see Small Potatoes perform\, you hear two great voices\, some fine guitar playing\, and a touch of tin whistle\, flute\, mandolin\, bodhran\, and other percussion toys. Together they present a truly rare blend of vocal and instrumental abilities\, award-winning songwriting\, and arranging talents. They have the unique ability to adapt to the style of music they happen to be playing\, and they also pay attention to the little things\, the warmth\, the humor and a rapport with the audience that makes for a memorable performance. \n“Make ‘em Laugh\, Make ‘em Cry\, Make ‘em Think”

SUMMARY:PATTY LARKIN- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Call to find out in case this does not get updated right away. \nPATTY LARKIN makes her debut appearance at the Carpe! Show up in force to make her want to return. \nPatty redefines the boundaries of folk-urban pop music with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising vocals and lyrics. Acoustic Guitar hails her “soundscape experiments” while Rolling Stone praises her “evocative and sonic shading.” She has been described as “riveting” (Chicago Tribune)\, “hypnotic” (Entertainment Weekly) and a “drop-dead brilliant” performer (Performing Songwriter). \nSTILL GREEN \n“Still Green\,” Patty Larkin’s 13th album\, plays out in Technicolor sound images\, a kaleidoscope of sun and sea that travels from the fluorescent-lit hallways of grief to the warm pull of love\, family and nature. This collection of new songs chronicles Patty’s search for relief\, respite and solace during a time when she lost both of her parents\, and witnessed a sister suffer a serious health issue. \nThe album begins with “The Best of Intentions\,” a song Larkin started before all of these life-altering events\, and completed after them. The song is a bellwether for the record\, that raises questions of belief and redemption\, and leaves them unanswered for the listener. The man in the hallway is cleaning up grief/While travelers chase after time like a thief/With oversized bags\, they wait for relief in the dawn/But The Best of Intentions all get up and leave before long. “It’s not a quick answer for me\,” Larkin says. “I was raised Catholic but once you start to ask yourself what you believe in\, things get interesting real fast. What I want to walk away with and what I want to leave the listener with is a sense of hope.” \nNEW YORK TIMES: “Richly contemplative tracks about solitude and togetherness\, open vistas and spiritual quests. Her voice can be breathy and confiding\, tinged with the blues or infused with Joni Mitchell’s pearly depth… Larkin is deeply attuned to the resonances of her many instruments….meditative chords ripple across acoustic and electric guitars in “Cover Me” and “Traveling Alone\,” and float over a dance beat in “Phone Message.” Countless little slide and steel-guitar licks ricochet around conga drums and filtered choruses of her voice in “Beautiful.”” \nPERFORMING SONGWRITER: “Imagine a drop dead brilliant guitar player\, a richly textural singer\, a commanding\, poetic songwriter\, a hilarious and personable entertainer. Now imagine these all in one person. There you have Larkin.”

SUMMARY:LARRY PENN/ JOHN SIEGER/ MARK DVORAK
DESCRIPTION:A whoppin’ night of great music with three great guys: \nThese shows with the “three grumpy amigos” have been a delight each time\, with the audience clamoring for another grumpy get-together. Don’t miss out on the hottest thing in showbiz. \nLarry Penn sings and tells stories of hard work\, working people\, trains\, trucks\, life on the road\, love\, nonsense\, and flamingos. Noted for their elegance in simplicity\, his songs are not only popular with audiences\, but are acclaimed by other artists\, many of whom have recorded their own renditions of Larry’s songs. His performances are delightful.  \nMark Dvorak    plays folk and blues on banjo and guitar – carrying on the tradition of stalwarts like the above-lauded Mr. Penn.   “Mark is a charismatic performer with a spark of gentle passion that lights every concert hall and every greenway where he lifts his voice in celebration of the old songs. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer who follows unerringly in the footsteps of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie\,” and his song writing has been called “wondrous” and “profound.” \nLike Larry\,  John Sieger is another Milwaukee gem\, known as a prolific and talented songwriter with a semi-country bent whose songs have impressed Dwight Yoakam\, Jerry Harrison\, The BoDeans\, Robbie Fulks and Flaco Jimenez enough to record them. He has been in numerous Milwaukee bands\, including the R&B Cadets\, Semi-Twang\, the SubContinentals. Roots rock\, country\, R&B- John runs the gamut.

SUMMARY:TOM KASTLE/ ANDREW CALHOUN
DESCRIPTION:TOM KASTLE is a singer\, songwriter\, sailor and teller of tales who has performed throughout the US\, Canada\, Europe\, and New Zealand. He has one foot in the modern singer/songwriter world and the other planted in the traditional maritime realm where he is a shanty and ballad singer and a tall ship captain. He is a co-director of the Chicago Maritime Festival\, a faculty member of the Old Town School of Folk Music\, and the Narrator (with occasional singing roles) for the Candid Concert Opera Company. When ashore\, he lives in a 19th century log cottage in Madison\, Wisconsin. \n“I heard Tom Kastle sing his song\, ‘Whose House? Our House!’ at a Local 1000 union meeting. Timely. Inspiring. A great gathering song sung with power and presence. ” –Holly Near \n“With his solo recording and original songs\, Tom Kastle shows further dimensions to his talent and range of material. His resonant voice\, heartfelt lyrics\, and solid instrumentation proves he is a more “grounded” talent\, as capable as writing about the open road as he is about the open waters” –Lilli Kuzma: Folk Festival WDCB-FM Radio \nANDREW CALHOUN “…is a powerful songsmith\, a quiet and sly performer\, and fine traditional singer as well… fascinating and unpredictable.” -Phil Shapiro\, Bound for Glory \n“Calhoun is a master at story songs\, finely crafted works that swiftly and economically capture a moment or express an emotion. Like the best novelists\, he is able to assume different personas and see the world through other people’s eyes.” – June Sawyers\, Chicago Tribune \n“He’s blessed with a resonant baritone\, crystalline fingerpicking\, and a writer’s ear.” – The Oregonian \nAndrew Calhoun’s music is innovative and rooted in tradition. In forty years as a performer he has evolved an increasingly varied repertoire including original songs\, Irish and American folk songs\, Scottish ballads\, African-American spirituals\, hymns\, historical background\, comic songs and poems and songs by writers such as Dave Carter\, Mary Oliver and Robert Frost.

SUMMARY:DARDEN SMITH/ FREEDY JOHNSTON
DESCRIPTION:DARDEN SMITH weaves together folk and Americana influences with rock\, pop and the musical roots of his home state of Texas to create a sound uniquely his own. With 14 critically acclaimed albums under his belt\, Smith was called “a singer-songwriter blessed with an uncommon degree of intelligence\, depth and compassion” by Allmusic.com. Compared to songwriters such as Nick Drake\, John Hiatt\, Leonard Cohen and Elvis Costello\, Smith is one of contemporary music’s most winning and gifted artistic treasures whose consistent creative excellence keeps blossoming. \nLove Calling\, Smith’s latest album and his first with Compass Records\, was recorded in Nashville where he co-wrote much of the material with some of the city’s stellar songwriters and working with top studio musicians. Capturing the sweep of its artist’s prolific career\, the album’s lyrics reflect the depth and resonance of a veteran songwriter\, while its melodies and production style recall the purity of Smith’s early work. \nOne of the finest and most singular voices in the singer-songwriter genre\, FREEDY JOHNSTON sold his Kansas farm in the late ‘80s to finance his musical career. It paid off. Rolling Stone and Spin hailed his second release\, Can You Fly\, as a masterpiece. Robert Christgau called it “a perfect album.” Its success led to a major label deal with Elektra\, for whom Johnston released This Perfect World in 1994. Not only did that album showcase Johnston’s increasing sophistication and range as a songwriter\, but it also included his breakthrough hit\, “Bad Reputation.” \nIn the ensuing years\, Johnston released three additional albums on Elektra\, including 1999′s critically acclaimed Blue Days\, Black Nights\, produced by T-Bone Burnett. \nFreedy’s songs are often praised for their literary quality\, but they also hit you on a gut level. As a young man\, Johnston was drawn to both the raw energy of punk and the austere beauty of Paul McCartney’s vocal melodies. It’s no surprise that Elvis Costello’s My Aim Is True is among the first albums that inspired him. One can hear Costello’s gift for meticulous songcraft and wry storytelling on Can You Fly. \nJohnston took a break from songwriting in the ‘00s\, releasing the demo collection The Way We Were and the covers album My Favorite Waste of Time. In 2009\, he released his first new album in eight years\, Rain On The City. Pitchfork\, the Los Angeles Times and others praised the album\, calling it one of the most assured efforts of Johnston’s career.

SUMMARY:JESS KLEIN/ Savannah Smith
DESCRIPTION:JESS KLEIN\nFor over a decade\, Jess Klein’s gutsy “tell it like it is” folk pop has been embraced by tastemakers from Tokyo to London\, from Australia to her new home state of Texas.\nGraced with one of the most enviable voices in Americana music – that’s her singing harmony on John Fullbright’s Grammy-nominated album From the Ground Up\, Jess is equally at ease with a sultry whisper or a rock’n’roll wail. MOJO Magazine writes “Jess Klein has one of those voices you want to crawl up close to the speakers to listen to.” The NY Times describes her songwriting as having “stranger\, more personal things to say than one could get away with most of the time in Nashville.” And No Depression‘s Lee Zimmerman calls Klein’s latest release Behind A Veil “An excellent album – a career-maker in fact.” In fact\, Klein has released eight critically acclaimed albums of her own and toured the globe\, sharing the stage with such greats as Arlo Guthrie\, Steve Earle\, Jimmy Dale Gilmore\, Shawn Colvin\, Radney Foster and Alejandro Escovedo. \n“A series of YouTube videos\, each one more precious than the last\, paint Minneapolis’ Savannah Smith as a ukulele-slinging Jack Johnson disciple—particularly in an adorable take on “Bitter Heart” by Zee Avi (who’s on Johnson’s Brushfire Records)\, aided by some smirking\, unofficial sign language from her roommate. But the seriousness Smith shows when performing her own songs\, like the punchy “Ventriloquism\,” nicely balances her jazz-informed cooing and displays a talent for lyrical density that raises her simple melodies.”\n— AV Club -Madison

SUMMARY:CLAUDIA SCHMIDT & DEAN MAGRAW
DESCRIPTION:Claudia and Dean may be sporting a new CD of their collaboration. Take this great opportunity to hear the two of them together live. \nAlmost four decades as a touring professional have found Michigan native Claudia Schmidt traversing North America as well as Europe in venues ranging from intimate clubs to 4\,000 seat theatres\, and festival stages in front of 25\,000 rapt listeners. She has recorded fourteen albums of mostly original songs\, exploring folk\, blues\, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. \n“To say that Schmidt is simply a performer with a talent to entertain would be a miscarriage of understatement. Schmidt takes her audiences into her world as easily as the child who discovers the endless universes that exist in a cardboard box. \nFrom lying on sandy beaches under an endless barrage of northern lights\, to the expected anguish and frustration of spinning tires on cars stuck deep in snow\, from the age-old struggle of change between adolescence and adulthood to the observation of sheer idiocy\, she leaves it to the imagination of her audience to conjure their own images of her storytelling and song. No interpretation of a Claudia Schmidt song or story is wrong-she invites audiences to tie their associations to her style. \nSchmidt weaves her way through her concert in much the same manner as a jester. Interwoven anecdotes\, revealing her past and present\, bring people to expect a relationship between themselves and memories driven deep with the passage of time. The concert is an endless display of self-realization through humor and longing\, leaving audience members yearning to become an integral part of her world.”\nDoor County Advocate \nComposer/Guitarist Dean Magraw’s musical passion transcends all boundaries\, yet the vital essence of his distinctive style remains\, while performing and recording solo\, with numerous regional ensembles\, and on projects with international notables as diverse as Japanese shamisen prodigy Nitta Masahiro\, classical violinist Nigel Kennedy\, South Indian virtuoso Nirmala Rajasheker\, epic songstress Ruth MacKenzie\, Irish supergroup Altan\, radio personality Garrison Keillor\, jazz bassist Anthony Cox\, and many others. (obviously including Claudia Schmidt.) \n“Dean Magraw… so liquid\, lyrical and effortless it’s like listening to a dancer.” -Steve Tibbetts \n“Dean Magraw unveils soulful melodic grooves intricately designed to heal the broken dancer\, confuse the boldest mathematician\, and eradicate ennui in our lifetime.” -Nick Lethert

SUMMARY:CLIFF EBERHARDT/ Tim Fast
DESCRIPTION:Redhouse recording artist CLIFF E. knew by age seven that he was going to be a singer and songwriter. As a child Cliff taught himself to play guitar\, piano\, base and drums. In his teens Eberhardt was fortunate enough to live close to the Main Point (one of the best folk clubs on the East Coast)\, he cut his teeth listening to the likes of James Taylor\, Joni Mitchell\, Bruce Springsteen\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Muddy Waters\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Mississippi John Hurt – receiving an early and impressive tutorial in acoustic music. At the same time\, he was also listening to great pop songwriters like Cole Porter\, the Gershwins\, and Rodgers and Hart\, which explain his penchant for great melodies and clever lyrical twists. \n“Up and down the line\, as a writer\, guitarist\, performer\, and vocalist\, Eberhardt is the equal of any singer-songwriter in contemporary pop. With unequaled directness and with a stark\, raw presentation\, he carves out miniature masterpieces\, giving voice to life’s complexities and ambiguities.”\n—Berkshire Eagle \n“Melding pop\, rock\,and folk styles into a rich melange\, Eberhardt fits gracefully and solidly in the singer/songwriter niche.”\n—Seattle Weekly \n“Eberhardt approaches the guitar with stylistic eloquence\, with the hooks\, licks and grooves that could easily rank him among those who are singularly known as guitar virtuosos.”\n—Taconic Newspapers \nOn his sixth album\, Eberhardt\, who calls the Pioneer Valley home\, couches his ballads in rootsy\, folksy arrangements that emphasize his bluesy guitar playing and his soulful\, Ray Charles-like vocals. Eberhardt’s melodies\, however\, are as sophisticated as ever — he is the missing link between Paul McCartney and Cole Porter.\n– Seth Rogovey \nA driving force of the Greenwich Village New Folk movement and well known among his peers\, Cliff’s songs have been covered by the likes of Richie Havens\, Buffy St. Marie\, Erasure\, Lucy Kaplansky and the folk superstar band “Cry\, Cry\, Cry” (Dar Williams\, Richard Shindell\, Lucy Kaplansky). \nTim Fast says “Many of my songs are about life’s experiences because the best songs come from what you know best.” Tim is a touring musician who counts celebrated songwriters like Cliff Eberhardt and James Keelaghan among his fans. Keelaghan said that besides being an “excellent songwriter\,” Tim has “the sweetest voice I’ve heard in a long time.” Cliff was so impressed with Tim that he asked him to tour with him as his opening act\, and to accompany him during his performance.

SUMMARY:CATHY BARTON & DAVE PARA
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Barton and Dave Para give dynamic performances acclaimed for their variety and expertise in both vocal and instrumental styles. Their repertoire and informal audience rapport are marked by a special affection for traditional music. \n“Cathy Barton and Dave Para\, as much as any folk musicians I know\, carry on the sense of importance of folk music\, the value of digging for old musical gold\, of traveling far and wide to collect old songs and tunes\, and of being friends with\, rather than exploiters of the old-timers who have provided such wonderful musical foundations for us all.” –Ed Trickett \nThis versatile duo performs and conducts workshops with hammered and fretted dulcimers\, banjo\, guitars and autoharp\, as well as “found” instruments like bones\, spoons\, mouthbow and leaf. Their music ranges from driving string band music to contemplative ballads and airs. They have a knack for finding unusual\, rarely heard songs from traditional and contemporary sources in their home region\, but also from elsewhere in the US and Europe. They have conducted many topical workshops on songs from the Carter family\, the Civil War\, river lore\, gospel\, children’s songs\, Christmas music and Ozark ballads.

SUMMARY:LAURIE McCLAIN
DESCRIPTION:LAURIE MCCLAIN \n“Laurie has got to be from another planet. I’ve never met anyone – except maybe Richie Havens – who is so open-hearted and full of love for humanity\, yet who appears to experience life on a different plane than everybody else. Her music is as innocent as it is informed by experience\, as playful as it is rooted\, and as detail-oriented as it is grand in scope. Lucky for the rest of us\, she’s translated her Earthly experience onto record\, and called it Ascend.”\n-DEVON SPROULE \n“Laurie is a true artist. She opens hearts and sings from a place of depth and love. She held my tough NYC audience with her masterful storytelling\, strong lyrics and vulnerable voice\, moving them to tears and laughter. If she is performing anywhere near you\, run to see her. You will not be disappointed; you will be transformed.”-KATHRYN\, KATHRYN’S HOUSE CONCERT SERIES\, NYC \n“Laurie’s voice has a raw\, genuine classic folk resonance that pulls you into every song.”\n-SINGER MAGAZINE \n“Laurie turns each venue into her own living room\, and each listener into a new friend with her disarming humor and passionate performance. Laurie’s songs explore the themes of identity\, growth\, friendship and love in a way that always honors the fundamental mysteries of the human journey. SUMMARY:HARPETH RISING
DESCRIPTION:HARPETH RISING \nBilled as an “Americana Sensation” by WSM 650\, this group of young classically trained musicians is making an immense impact wherever they play. The quartet brings an exciting and distinctive sound to the Americana genre.” They wowed the audience when they played here this spring\, and they will no doubt do it again. \nWith a banjo and fiddle\, you might think they’re traditional bluegrass\, but think again: cello and hand drums round out the group\, creating a truly new sound. A little bit bluegrass\, a little bit folk\, a little bit classical and whole lot of original\, Harpeth Rising is a band to watch.
