SUMMARY:ELLIS PAUL- CANCELLED!!!!
DESCRIPTION:Sunday night’s show has been CANCELLED because Ellis could not get a flight in time for the other gigs on this tour. His agency is trying to work quickly to get a June tour planned. We will know that replacement date (likely Thursday June 12) very soon and will post it on the website and on Facebook.  PLEASE CONTACT US if you have tickets or reservations for this show so that we will know you have been reached.  Sorry- those damn vicissitudes. \nELLIS PAUL \n“A singer songwriter is only as good as the times he reflects. In times like these\, when so many nuts are running the show\, it’s comforting to know that Ellis Paul is actually holding our sanity on his own stage! Wise\, tender\, brilliant and biting\, Ellis is one of our best human compasses\, marking in melodies and poems where we’ve been and where we might go if we so choose to. Personally Ellis\, I’m goin’ where you’re goin’!” –Nora Guthrie (Woody Guthrie’s daughter) \n  \nEllis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting and one of the top songwriters to emerge out of the fertile Boston folk scene. He helped create a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban\, literate\, folk rock style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 90’s. \n  \nHis charismatic\, personally authentic performance style has influenced a generation of artists away from the artifice of pop\, and closer towards the realness of folk. Though he remains among the most pop-friendly of today’s singer-songwriters – his songs regularly appear in hit movie and TV soundtracks – he has bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger more successfully than perhaps any of his songwriting peers. \n

SUMMARY:THE PINES/ Mike & Ruthy
DESCRIPTION:A Valentine’s Day spectacular with 2 great acts- \nTHE PINES  with opening act  Mike and Ruthy \nFounded by Iowa natives David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey\, indie-roots band The Pines surprisingly actually met in Arizona\, where they both lived in a Mexican barrio and first began playing together. Forming The Pines\, they returned to the Midwest\, moving to Minneapolis. \nThe Pines weave together many musical styles to create their own unique sound that is hip and haunting. The son of Greg Brown’s producer and sideman Bo Ramsey\, Benson was reared on folk and blues music and those influences continue to shine through\, even on louder electric songs. David shares Benson’s deep love for traditional music\, and together the two craft songs that evoke the ancient\, while incorporating newer rock and pop grooves. Both strong writers\, singers and instrumentalists\, David and Benson have distinct voices that complement each other\, causing audiences and critics alike to tout them as a powerful young force in American roots music. \n“simply and eloquently stated sonic poetry…the real deal.”  Acoustic Guitar“richly resonant indie-folk in the vein of Bon Iver\, Calexico and Mason Jennings”  The Onion A.V. Club“a hushed mix of acoustic and electric guitars and keyboards creates a kind of haunted landscape…an affecting portrait capturing an American journey”  All Music“a soundtrack of American gothic intensity…a stunner of an album.”  Vintage Guitar“a dusty and often ghostly take on Americana”  CBS Minnesota“quietly gripping” Rolling Stone \nMike and Ruthy  He grew up listening to ska-punk and alternative rock radio\, dreaming of becoming a songwriter on the political edge. She was raised at the intersection of folk and swing\, daughter of fiddle master Jay Ungar and country songwriter Lyn Hardy. They met in NYC\, just out of college\, and went on to found “subversive acoustic stringband” The Mammals\, one of the most popular folk rock bands of their generation. When The Mammals entered a prolonged “hibernation”\, and they married\, they spent their honeymoon in the studio\, recording a debut duo album aptly called The Honeymoon Agenda. \nNow\, after two more full-length albums and over a decade of performance together\, indie folk roots pair Mike + Ruthy\, aka Michael Merenda and Ruth Ungar\, have established a reputation for breathtaking delivery and intimate performance\, with exquisite songs and songcraft that combine catchy folk-pop choruses with honest\, organic tradfolk and roots elements\, played out on guitars\, fiddle\, banjo\, ukulele\, and a single microphone. \nFUN FACTS \n•  Mike has been playing in bands and writing songs since age 12.  •  Ruthy was raised at the intersection of folk and swing\, daughter of fiddle master Jay Ungar and country songwriter Lyn Hardy.• In 1998 Mike + Ruthy met in NYC\, just out of college\, and went on to found “subversive acoustic stringband” The Mammals\, one of the most popular folk rock bands of their generation.  “The Mammals are the finest young bluegrass/old-timey band in the country\, the country-branch house band for the new weird America.” – LA Weekly  • Mike & Ruthy are proud to perform around 100 concerts per year traveling with their five-year-old son\, Willy\, and one-year-old daughter\, Opal. • Mike & Ruthy’s haunting posthumous Woody Guthrie collaboration “My New York City” has been hailed as one of the most gorgeous pieces ever to have come out of the archive.  Watch the video!• In 2013 Mike & Ruthy organized a bi-annual folk and roots festival called The Hoot at the Ashokan Center near their home in upstate NY.  The first Winter Hoot brought together Amy Helm\, Spirit Family Reunion\, Elizabeth Mitchell\, Jeffrey Lewis\, Jay Ungar & Molly Mason\, and other Americana favorites. The Summer Hoot featured 28 bands including Pete Seeger\, Natalie Merchant\, Dan Bern\, Dirt Farmer Band\, AC Newman\, Happy Traum\, and The Wiyos plus screening of the Levon Helm film\, “Ain’t In It For My Health.”  The 2014 Winter and Summer Hoots are planned for Feb 7-9 and Aug 22-24 respectively.  • Mike + Ruthy are part of a Woodstock music collective including Amy Helm and a host of others which performs sporadically on Friday nights at Levon’s barn\, Home of the Ramble. \n  \n“Warm\, rich\, vintage Americana.” — Time Out NY \n“Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” – LA Weekly \n“Infectious new folk rock” — Boston Globe \n“This summer’s must hear acoustic album.” – Performer Magazine“Easily a new favorite.” – Daytrotter“Mike & Ruthy are a national treasure.” – Anais Mitchell“Mike & Ruthy are carrying the torch for simple\, heartfelt acoustic music with a direct line back to the Carter Family via Woody Guthrie\, Hank Williams\, Bob Dylan and even the Byrds .”  — Maverick Magazine\, UK“There’s perhaps no better way to summarize the lasting impact of Woody Guthrie’s music than to note the quality of the very newest music being made with his words.  Husband-wife Mike + Ruthy Merenda got the lyrics to “My New York City” from the Guthrie archives and set it to one of the most gorgeous melodies ever to accompany one of Woody’s songs.  It came out in April 2012: Brand new right now\, it’s destined to become a classic.” -eMusic’s 20 Best Woody Guthrie Songs (Sung By Other People)>“starkly poetic\, buzzed-about Americana” Minneapolis Star Tribune

SUMMARY:ERNIE HENDRICKSON
DESCRIPTION:ERNIE HENDRICKSON draws his inspiration from American roots music as varied as Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Neil Young\, Cat Stevens\, Jerry Garcia and others. \nHendrickson’s latest record\, Walking with Angels\, was made with veteran producer Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown\, Lucinda Williams) Played with a live band consisting of Bo\, Jon Penner on bass (Junior Brown\, Bo Ramsey)\, and Steve Hayes on drums (Greg Brown\, Bo Ramsey). \nAfter adding legendary Chicago pedal steel player Brian Wilkie (Alison Krauss\, Pam Tillis) on several tracks\, Bob Black’s banjo (Bill Monroe)\, and taking a trip to Nashville to record keyboardist Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton)\, the record shines as a true testament to Hendrickson’s ripening powers as a songwriter. \nRadio promotion has taken the sophomore album’s success to a higher level on both AAA and Americana stations. The album spent over 25 weeks in the Top 20 on Roots Music Report’s Folk charts and in regular rotation at nearly 100 different stations across the country including Nashville’s award-winning WSM-AM The Legend. \n“Dark and pretty songs. Ernie Hendrickson is finding a niche in the indie folk Americana segment. He is a storyteller like Harry Nilsson in a country mood.”\n– Hans Werksman\, Here Comes The Flood \n“Whether exploring tribal beats or graceful homegrown country hymnals\, E. Hendrickson stretches the song-writing pallet. He is drawing influences from Gram Parsons’ Burrito Brothers\, straight through the heart of the America’s Blues tradition.”\n– Martin Halo\, JamBase \nGive him a listen.

SUMMARY:RAY KAMALAY
DESCRIPTION:RAY KAMALAY  is a jazz guitarist known for his work  as leader of the Red Hot Peppers.  He will appear here solo. \n\nIn the early 1930’s\, America was blessed with a heyday of small-band jazz\, the likes of which it has not seen since.  In ballrooms across North America\, hot jazz\, laced with exciting improvisation\, and ballads\, melancholy and blue\, told stories of joy and tragedy\, and provided rhythm for the feet of dancers of the two-step\, the Lindy and the Swing…Ray Kamalay and his Red Hot Peppers are reminiscent of this peculiar era.  With some of the finest players in the United States\, they play this music with all its  excitement  and sentiment.  They have wowwed audiences at some of the very finest venues\, including Interlochen\, Edinburghand the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Ray Kamalay is the singer\, guitarist and leader of the group.  A Detroit native\, Ray started playing professionally immediately after graduating from the University of Detroit in 1974.  Even then he showed an unusual interest in both folk music and jazz.  In that same year\, while searching for the ancient Celtic muse on the Shetland Islands\, he got his first big dose of the music of Django Reinhardt.  Since then his interest in both genres has only gotten bigger.Ray has worked in collaboration with many fine artists\, including Joel Mabus\, James Dapogny\, Johnny Frigo\, Betty Joplin\, the Chenille Sisters\, Jethro Burns and Ralphe and Howard Armstrong.  In 1997 his work with the Armstrongs was nominated for the W. C. Handy Award.  A student of the music\, Ray lectures periodically at the college level with a talk called “Freedom\, Slavery and the roots of American Music.”  His anecdotes are often highlights of the show.

SUMMARY:PIPER ROAD
DESCRIPTION:PIPER ROAD \nLast year Piper Road celebrated its 40th year of busting the borders of bluegrass with the release of its new CD – “Piper Road: 40”. Piper Road is: \nRandal Harrison – Fiddle \nBob Mason – Mandolin \nMark Hembree (former “Bluegrass Boy” with Bill Monroe)- upright bass \nBarry Riese — Guitar – Vocals \nBill Kangaroo — Washboard \nThe band was born into the age of rock & roll with individual backgrounds diverse as classical\, cowboy\, folk\, blues and Dixieland. Influenced by some live performances of Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band release of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” in the early 1970’s\, they put away the electric amps and guitars and developed a unique acoustic/bluegrass style. They never completely abandoned their musical roots and have blended Irish fiddle tunes with American country\, big band\, novelty and space-aged Grateful Dead inspired jams. \nPlease call to reserve seats.

SUMMARY:THE TALL TREES- TIM GRIMM AND BEN BEDFORD
DESCRIPTION:Two Americana songwriters with strong credentials are pairing up for  tonight’s show. \nTIM GRIMM  is an award-winning songwriter\, and actor on stage and screen. He has toured and recorded with his friend\,  Ramblin’ Jack Elliott\, appeared with Harrison Ford in the film Clear and Present Danger\, and has shared the stage with writer and poet Wendell Berry. His recording\, The Back Fields was named Best Americana Album in the 2006 Just Plain Folks Music Awards in Los Angeles (the largest and most diverse music awards in the world). Named 2000’s “BEST DISCOVERY in Roots/Americana Music” by The Chicago Sun-Times\,  and “2004 MALE ARTIST of The Year” by the Freeform American Roots DJs\, his songs and performances have established him as a unique voice in Americana music. Each of his past 5 recordings have reached the top of the Folk or American-roots charts. \nGrimm walks the fine line between folk and country\, while maintaining a strong footing in tradition.  We hear the rural rumblings that have shaped his life\, but we are also invited in to a bigger picture\, as evident in so much of his work. Critics searching for comparisons most often cite Johnny Cash\, Woody Guthrie and (Nebraska era) Bruce Springsteen. \nAfter several years working in Los Angeles (where he co-starred for 2 seasons on the NBC drama Reasonable Doubts and appeared in several films)\, Tim returned home to Indiana.  He grew up in the woods and small town settings of southern Indiana\, son of schoolteachers and grandson of farmers\, and his return home was a conscious choice to live a life of significance rather than one of “success’. He now lives with his wife and sons on an 80 acre farm close to where he grew up. Tim’s songs are full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life—rich with descriptive details\, and sung with warmth and intimacy—recognizing the inextinguishable national romance with the idea of the family farm and the vanishing landscape of rural America. \nIn 2007\, Grimm put together a concept cd with several of the Midwest’s finest songwriter’s— Krista Detor\, Carrie Newcomer\, Tom Roznowski\, and Michael White. The recording\, Wilderness Plots\, was drawn from the short stories of noted author\, Scott Russell Sanders\, and explored the settling of the American Wilderness in the Ohio River Valley Region between The Revolutionary War and The Civil War. Two PBS programs have explored Wilderness Plots– the first\, a documentary on the story and song\, and the second a full Wilderness Plots- In Concert (2012). Produced by WTIU in Bloomington\, IN\, both productions were nominated for EMMY AWARDS. \nTim has performed in theatres and coffeehouses around the United States. Still very active on stage and onscreen\, Tim’s most recent projects include guest spots on television’s\, CHICAGO CODE and DETROIT 187\, and work on the upcoming feature film\, AT ANY PRICE\,  with director\, Ramin Bahrani and starring Dennis Quaid and Zac Effron. In 2012 he has  appeared onstage in The Indiana Repertory Theatre production of GOD OF CARNAGE and a new theatrical concert piece– FOREVER SUNG- songs about aging–at The Phoenix Theatre. \nWatch a performance with his wife Jan Lucas here. \nBEN BEDFORD delivers intriguing sketches of America\, its individuals\, their victories and their struggles. Poignant\, but never sentimental\, Bedford’s portrait-like songs capture the vitality of his characters and draw the listener deep into the narratives. With three albums to his credit\, Bedford’s songs tackle scenarios including homelessness\, the plight of a Confederate soldier’s wife during the American Civil War\, the aerial triumphs of Amelia Earhart\, the life of Jack London\, the murder of Emmett Till in 1955\, John the Baptist\, the poet Vachel Lindsay and even the 1973 standoff between members of The American Indian Movement and federal agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Often drawing upon history\, Bedford’s songs have a strong sense of time and place. The songs are rich in sensory detail which allows the listener to hear\, see and feel each narrative. \n“Ben Bedford has proven himself to be a truly inspired and talented storyteller…” according to Arthur Wood (Maverick).  A true son of the heartland\, Bedford dips into the deep inkwell of classic American literature and writes with the ‘old soul’ quality of his literary idols\, such as John Steinbeck and Toni Morrison. Bedford has played his songs for audiences all over the United States. His music has received extensive airplay on folk and roots radio in the U.S.\, as well as in Europe\, taking him overseas on several occasions for concert dates on the continent and in the United Kingdom.  All three of Bedford’s albums have charted highly on the Euro Americana charts and the Folk-DJ charts with What We Lost also charting highly on the Roots Music Report charts. IIn July of 2010\, Bedford was named one of the “50 most significant Folk singer-songwriters of the past 50 years” by Rich Warren of WFMT-Chicago. The list\, which included artists such as Bob Dylan\, Townes Van Zandt\, Judy Collins and John Prine subsequently appeared on the blog of journalist Eric Zorn on the Chicago Tribune website.

SUMMARY:THE MINIMALISTS- Perry Baird and Jeff Mason duo
DESCRIPTION:It was just a short 23+ years ago that Fort Atkinson’s own Perry Baird and Jeff Mason (except for their gig last summer) last graced the stage together at the Carpe. Now they are both crusty old coots with grandchildren\, looking forward to collecting Social Security. In stubborn defiance to the advance of years and the physical and mental decline that accompanies it\, they are ready to turn back the clock (at least for one night). They got to reminiscing at the Rotary pancake breakfast this year and it led to this evening of music. \nPerry Baird’s strong and smooth baritone vocals draw you in to the songs he plays\, selections that are an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional styles. He occasionally performs solo\, accompanying himself on 6- and 12-string guitar\, and he’s more frequently on stage with a folk trio known as the Buzzards\, which includes Madison’s Mike and Patty McDougal. \nJeff Mason accompanies Perry on guitar and vocals\, combining finger-style and flat-picking counterpoint…with a bit of soloing thrown in. Jeff also does a solo act (with his looper)\, performs with the locally infamous Merry Horde\, also occasionally as the newly hatched Jeff Mason Trio. Now this. Nobody (including Jeff) is quite sure where—or with whom—he will end up next. \nYou don’t want to wait another quarter-century before these guys get together again\, so catch them while you can (and they’re able).

SUMMARY:DEVIL IN THE OUTHOUSE
DESCRIPTION:This blurb from the Devil themself: \nBy now you’ve probably heard about the band splitting up and all the morbid details: Looper (Brian Lucas)’s narcissistic rants and sex tape scandal\, Scott (McCormick)’s repeated visits to rehab\, Blaine’s cosmetic surgery mishap\, and Greg (Valde)’s “monastic retreat.” \nCome find out if there will be a happy reunion or a tragic melee on stage (on Boxing Day\, no less) as Devil in the Outhouse spews forth their 7th annual holiday concert (which is unlikely to include much holiday music). \nThere will\, however\, be folk\, blues\, comedy and psychotherapy and bathroom services available. The show starts at 7:30\, but we encourage you to come early and eat dinner at the Café Carpe. The food is great and we certainly don’t want Kitty and Bill to go out of business. Who else would let us play in such a nice music room? \nWhy: So you can find out if Eric (deported) and Scott (relapse) are allowed to return to Wisconsin and actually show up. Or come to see Looper’s attempt at a Santa Claus beard. Or come for the weird musical combination of guitar\, fiddle\, bass\, harmonica\, and accordion — but mostly come so you can laugh\, drink\, and escape from your dysfunctional family during the holidays. \nRemember to call to reserve.
