SUMMARY:RADIO WRANGLERS
DESCRIPTION:THE RADIO WRANGLERS hail from Wisconsin and are heavily influenced by the sounds of the 1930’s\, 40’s and 50’s with influences ranging from Country and Western\, Western Swing\, and Honky Tonk. The band has had the pleasure of playing at Opryland in Nashville\, and opening for such acts as Wayne Hancock and Carolyn Martin’s Western Swing Band. They strive to encapsulate the sounds of traditional 1940’s and 50’s Country and Western music\, while adding their own tunes to the long-lasting tradition they so greatly admire. From Waltzes to Boogies\, hot swing to high and lonesome blues\, you do not want to miss this band’s unique blend of true American music! \nDrawing influences from such artists as Bob Wills\, Ernest Tubb\, Milton Brown\, Jack Gurhrie\, Tex Williams\, Webb Pierce\, Hank Thompson\, and Hank Williams\, The Radio Wranglers also write original music with a taste of the past. Fronted by the twin fiddle team of Blaine And Ruthie McQuinn on fiddle and vocals\, The Radio Wranglers are Danny Tyksinski on lead guitar\, and Ed Novak on rhythm guitar\, and Peyton Lencho on doghouse bass. \nThe Radio Wranglers have had the good fortune of playing the Nashville Boogie for two consecutive years\, including being the band for the Western Wear Fashion show! And in November 2015\, they have been nominated for an Ameripolitan Award for Western Swing group. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:CHRIS KASPER
DESCRIPTION:“Nothing cuts to the core like a simple song\,” says CHRIS KASPER. More than a dozen years into his acclaimed career\, the singer/songwriter gets back to the bluesy basics with his fifth album\, O\, the Fool. \nInspired by Delta blues\, folk music\, and the string arrangements of Hollywood film scores\, O\, the Fool was recorded on both ends of an 800-mile move that took Kasper from Philadelphia to Nashville. He’d already spent much of his adulthood on the road\, traveling from city to city\, building his fanbase one show at a time. Meanwhile\, back at home\, his friends were putting down roots and starting families of their own. Kasper couldn’t help but question his own choices\, and it’s that swirl of contrasting feelings — uncertainty\, determination\, and wanderlust — that fuels O\, the Fool. \n“It’s about traveling\,” he says of the 13-song\, self-produced album\, “and then second-guessing your travels once you’ve arrived at your destination. It’s about coming to terms with the thing that makes you think\, ‘Ok\, maybe this isn’t the right place for me\, but I am here\, so I should make it work. This is where life has brought me.'” \nThe album’s title was born during a coffeeshop meeting with a friend\, who spilled a pack of tarot cards across the table. The first card was the Fool: a traveller with a bag slung over his shoulder\, headed toward some unknown destination. The illustration reminder Kasper of himself. Weeks later\, another friend found the same card and brought it to Kasper\, saying the two troubadours resembled one another. Kasper agreed. “The card embodies that feeling of wandering\,” he explains. “It reminded me of the journey that music takes you on\, and you can’t predict where it’s gonna take you.” \nFrom a songwriting perspective\, O\, the Fool is a simple\, straightforward album. The chord progressions are basic\, influenced by the no-frills approach of blues musicians and early 20th century folksingers. The arrangements\, on the other hand\, are downright lush\, with Kasper taking inspiration from the epic\, sweeping scores of old western movies. He engineered the string parts himself\, working with multi-instrumentalist Kylie Ryan — who contributions to the album include viola\, cello\, and violin — to create orchestral swells. Lush and beautiful\, the songs on O\, the Fool show Kasper’s capabilities not only as a songwriter and evocative vocalist\, but as a producer\, too. \n“This is a realization album\,” says the songwriter\, whose past travels have included opening gigs with the Wood Brothers\, Amos Lee\, and G Love. “It’s almost like a soundtrack — a blues album meets a western movie. When your songs are simple and direct\, you can go nuts with the presentation. You can strip away the fat from your writing\, but still turn the entire arrangement into something bigger. That way\, the punches hit harder.” \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \n

SUMMARY:KAIA FOWLER
DESCRIPTION:With soaring vocals and accomplished guitar work\, KAIA shares songs that explore life’s struggles and joys\, drawing on folk\, blues\, roots\, and rock traditions. Inspired by nature and the human condition\, Kaia’s songs resonate with strength and vulnerability as she explores a vast emotional landscape. With over 20 years as a performing singer-songwriter\, Kaia draws from a large repertoire of original material and select cover songs by artists such as John Prine\, Carole King\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Stevie Nicks. \nKaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical poetry\, rich melodies and engaging chord progressions. She placed as a finalist for the 2012 Great River Folk Festival songwriters contest. Two songs from her 2010 album Seams of My Heart received radio play on Woman of Substance Radio. The Americana Gazette album review had this to say about Kaia’s songwriting: “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” It continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010 issue). Kaia’s latest album\, released October 2015\, is an EP titled All The Way\, dedicated to the memory of her husband Scott R. Jaeger who died of pancreatic cancer in 2013. A portion of the proceeds from sales of All The Way benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. She is currently working on her third studio album. \nSee videos of Kaia’s recent performance at a house concert and listen to samples from her albums at her website.

SUMMARY:GARNET ROGERS- sold out
DESCRIPTION:Click on the link to purchase your tickets:   \nThe big Canadian is back. \nIn a darkened bedroom\, lit only be the amber glow from an old floor model radio\, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds\, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry\, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later\, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. \nWithin ten years\, and barely out of high school\, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full- time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. \nHailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music”

SUMMARY:KAREN JOHNSON
DESCRIPTION:Karen Johnson started performing at the Café Carpe in 1998. So much for housework! \nJoan Baez\, Nanci Griffith\, and Alison Krauss are just a few of her favorite artists. Riding along with her dad in his old Chevy truck sparked her passion for old country songs of which a few find their way onto her song list. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \n  \n\nGive her a listen here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:ANNA TIVEL & JEFFREY MARTIN
DESCRIPTION:We will open at 5:30. \nANNA TIVEL and JEFFREY MARTIN  – you can’t go wrong with this double hitter \nANNA TIVEL has spent some quality hours in a dodge caravan repeating lyrical lines over and over until the words fall in time with the windshield wipers\, or until the gas light comes on. \nAnna gained a number of fans by playing with PETER MULVEY for 5 nights of last year’s Lamplighter series.  We count ourselves proudly among them. \nA nationally touring artist with a deep love of quiet stories\, Anna is beginning to carve a place for herself in the songwriting world. She was a winner at this year’s Kerrville Songwriting Contest\, and has shared the stage with heroes and friends across the country. \nAnna was raised in the forest and farmland of rural northern Washington and currently calls Portland\, OR home. Her songs reflect both the stark colors of small town life\, and the hard\, sharp lines of the city. Anna’s album\, Before Machines\, was hailed by No Depression as “raw\, yet superbly composed and executed\, intelligent\, personal and deeply expressive.” Her newest album\, Heroes Waking Up\, was produced by guitar mastermind Austin Nevins (Josh Ritter\, Anais Mitchell\, Kris Delmhorst). The album was released by Portland’s well-loved Fluff and Gravy Records and called “vastly expressive in its stark beauty\,” by Glide Magazine. \n“Portland songwriter Anna Tivel is a favorite over at Hearth. She’s a deft\, clever songwriter with a knack for observing the small\, subtle beauties of our lives.” – Kithfolk \n“Raw yet superbly composed and executed\, as well as intelligent and personal and deeply expressive in their experience\, observation and storytelling\, the fifteen tracks on Before Machines don’t just serve as an absorbing and utterly worthwhile listen but as indisputable evidence that the folk scene is in good hands with both its longtime artists and newcomers alike.” – No Depression \n“To be sure\, these are organic songs that freely reveal the poetry of the mind\, heart and soul\, the sharp imagery of the world translated into sound\, and both the simple and complex things represented sentimentally and at length.” – Examiner \n“Anna Tivel’s voice is haunting\, exhibiting the timbre of a precocious child\, whispering to a teddy bear underneath the covers.” – The Bluegrass Situation \n“Anna Tivel brings a raft of beautiful songs with brine-soaked images of Pacific Northwest tidepools\, oceans\, and the birds that wheel above them in the gray skies.” – Devon Leger\, No Depression \nShe and JEFFREY MARTIN are touring all over the United States.  Jeffrey quit teaching to go back on the road. \nBorn in Texas in 1984\, Jeffrey Martin quickly made his way to the Northwest where he discovered in nature and in people what would be the deep well for much of his songwriting. His father was a lover of stories\, especially in music\, and Martin was raised with a careful ear cocked and listening to Neil Young\, John Prine\, Jackson Browne\, Bob Dylan\, and Harry Chapin. He was fortunate to live in Eugene\, OR for much of his adolescence\, where in the late 90’s and early 2000’s there was a strong and steady flow of folk songwriters touring through. Leo Kotke\, John Gorka\, and David Wilcox were huge inspirations. \nIn 2011 Jeffrey Martin caught a lucky break\, a chance encounter with a prominent local promoter at a rowdy dive bar. Through that meeting he was invited to open for Tracy Grammer and then David Wilcox\, which then lead to a few small tours\, and eventually a finalist slot in a national songwriting competition in New York City and a successful national tour. \nMartin’s music has been likened to the styles of Josh Ritter and Joe Pug\, with an attention to storytelling reminiscent of Harry Chapin and John Prine. Since 2011 Jeffrey has released two full length albums (Gold in the Water (2011) and Dogs in the Daylight (2014))\, and one EP entitled Build a Home (2012.) Also in 2014\, Martin signed to the sensational Portland record label Fluff and Gravy Records\, where he still makes a happy musical home\, along with fellow artists Mike Coykendall\, Nick Jaina\, Fernando\, Dan Stuart\, Richmond Fontaine\, Anna Tivel and others. \n“He’s an incredibly rare find among today’s glut of singer-songwriters: a songwriter whose songs are immediately affecting. These are the kind of songs that can change you.” –Devon Leger NO DEPRESSION \n“Jeffrey Martin can write a heavy-hitter and sing it too. He’s good backstage company\, and a solid bet for any club in the country…” –Jeffrey Foucault \nPORTLAND MERCURY: “Jeffrey Martin’s music is not widely known\, which is a shame\, because he might be the best songwriter in Portland. With lyrics that read like Raymond Carver stories and a voice that’s one breath away from breaking completely apart\, Martin’s songs are beautiful\, sparse\, and utterly devastating. . . . If there is any justice in the world\, Martin’s music will soon reach a wider audience and inflict devastation on a much larger scale.” \nPlease call to reserve at 920-563-9391.

SUMMARY:PAPER BIRDS w/ Claudia Russell\, Katie Dahl\, Bruce Kaplan & Rich Higdon
DESCRIPTION:  \nThere is power\, and beauty\, in numbers. In the case of PAPER BIRDS\, the magic number is four. Fronting this pop-up band are two superlative songwriters: CLAUDIA RUSSELL and KATIE DAHL. Claudia is a veteran of the California Americana music scene and has won songwriting honors from Boston to Texas. Wisconsin’s own Katie Dahl is gaining a reputation as one of the Midwest’s best young songwriters\, writing keenly literate songs planted deep in the ground of her Door County home. Her velvety alto carries a keen sense of melody that makes for memorable and satisfying music moments. Add Dahl’s husband\, Rich Higdon\, on bass and percussion\, and spot on accompaniment from Russell’s spouse\, Bruce Kaplan\, on mandolin and guitar\, and you have a wonderfully adept musical outfit. \nPaper Birds was born of friendship. The four are fans and friends of each other have long shared stages when one duo would travel to the home state of the other. (Russell lives in California and Dahl in Wisconsin). So in 2015 Paper Birds was officially chartered. And though the band’s performances are somewhat rare\, there is nothing thrown together about it. This quartet is as magic as any Blue Moon and has won over audiences at Fishstock\, The Blackhawk Folk Society\, Chicago’s nationally syndicated radio concert\, FOLKSTAGE\, venues across California\, and of course\, here at Cafe Carpe. \nCLAUDIA RUSSELL– Known for her expressive voice and tightly-knit songs\, Russell brings wonder to an eclectic array of music. She has just completed her fourth CD\, produced by the Bay Area’s Grammy winning Bluegrass icon Laurie Lewis. He 2013 CD\, “All Our Luck is Changing\,” was hailed as “a masterpiece” by American Songwriter Magazine. \nRussell has sung with John Gorka\, Tish Hinojosa\, and shared bills with Cheryl Wheeler\, Peter Mulvey and the later great Dave Carter – to name a few. A veteran of American Folklore Theater (aka Northern Sky Theater)\, Russell has performed in AFT shows such as “Old Friends\,” “Fish and Whistle” and Good Night Irene.” Of her work for AFT\, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said’ Russell has a voice that was born to sing folk music – she breaks hearts.” \nKATIE DAHL – Still in her early 30s\, Wisconsin singer-songwriter Katie has performed her original songs everywhere from the dusty cliff country of Mali\, West Africa\, to the winding canals of southern France\, to the cedar forests of the American northwoods. The depth and power of Katie’s alto voice\, the literate candor of her original songs\, and the easy humor of her live performances have earned her numerous songwriting awards\, as well as the chance to share stages with such luminaries as Dar Williams\, Peter Mulvey\, Julie Gold\, and Cheryl Wheeler. Katie is also a playwright whose musical Victory Farm premiered to high acclaim in 2012 and has since been made into a live cast album. \nMike Fischer of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that Katie Dahl “combine[s] old-fashioned populism\, an abiding love of the land\, and wickedly smart love songs\, all delivered in a rich and expressive alto.” \n“Crowns\,” the opening track from her third CD “Ordinary Band\,” hit number one on the folk radio charts for July 2015. \nCheck out the quartet on YouTube: https://goo.gl/8G1rjE \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:SONOFMEL & the SLIDEMAN
DESCRIPTION:Sonofmel is the psuedonym of Hayward\, Wisconsin’s John Adler. He’s a deep thinker who sees symbols and human connection in all things\, and his album “Springtime in a Foreign City” details moments of his life travelling the world. He’s joined by Jordan “Slideman” Grunow of Ashland\, WI\, for a memorable Scenic Route full of original tunes and great conversation. \n“Sometimes it takes traveling far from home to find out where you come from…\n…after 20 years of wandering the globe and combing the sites\, lights\, sounds\, and shadows for signs of the sacred sprung from the profane\, time warrants a return to the mid west with a time-worn guitar\, fistfuls of chords strung up with verse\, bringing the foreign home to the familiar… These songs come from the world-weary road\, plied from places and faces met from Baku to Berkeley\, Anchorage to Ankara\, from recluse to royalty…”  –sonofmel \n“Sonofmel is one of the best songwriters out there.“– Gary Storm\, Oil of Dog Radio \n“Dylanesque songwriting delivered with a voice like Johnny Cash.” – Jeffrey Jones\, WOJB Music Director \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:JOHN STATZ/ HAYWARD WILLIAMS
DESCRIPTION:One of the more prolific and hard-working young songwriters working in the Americana genre\, JOHN STATZ has released seven studio albums\, and performed all over North America (including Canada and Mexico) and Europe\, all in just a shade over a decade. Throughout that time he’s been writing the kind of songs that float through your mind and stay nestled in your thoughts long after listening (American Songwriter) and it’s been said that his songwriting can stand beside the best and above the rest (No Depression). Along the way John has attracted the attention of the likes of Americana scene heroes Jeffrey Foucault and Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams\, Greg Brown)\, who separately produced his last two records. This latest is produced by fellow Denver songwriter Megan Burtt\, whose instincts and backing band help bring forth an entirely new sound from Statz. The title of The Fire Sermon was taken from the third section of T.S. Eliot’s poem\, The Wasteland\, the name of which was borrowed from a sermon given by Buddha\, in which he denounced the fires of passion\, hatred\, and infatuation with which the senses burn\, according to Eliot’s endnotes. At the very end of the Fire Sermon section Eliot simply repeats\, “Burning burning burning burning.” \nJohn Statz was given a guitar by his grandmother when he was 15\, which turned out to be perfectly timed for a teenager who\, after ten years of piano lessons\, had lost interest in classical music and had taken to learning John Lennon and Elton John tunes\, first trying out his singing voice and turning towards rock and roll. Spending the rest of his high school years in southern Wisconsin attempting to play and sing like Neil Young and Cat Stevens\, it wasn’t until Statz was 19 and attending university in Oshkosh that he began writing songs. The spark lit after attending a show at the storied Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson\, Wisconsin featuring Jeffrey Foucault and Peter Mulvey\, who quickly became heroes\, and\, much later on\, fast friends and colleagues. The first record\, Dusk Came Slow\, was engineered by a friend enrolled in the university recording program\, and what followed for John has been 11 years of touring everywhere from Bellingham to Budapest\, Fairbanks to Mexico City\, all the while becoming a stronger songwriter\, and a more compelling performer. \nHAYWARD WILLIAMS is a veteran singer/songwriter from Milwaukee\, WI. With six full length records under his belt\, Williams is set to release his latest effort: Pretenders.  This record is yet another swan dive into the deep end of the Americana/Soul world that Hayward tends to reside in. \nGrowing up in Wisconsin in the 80’s and 90’s convinced Hayward Williams to search for something more out there in the world. Foregoing higher education\, he joined a band and learned much about what to do and what not to do in the Midwest music scene. Playing in pubs for many years \, getting thick skin and finding a notably sharp tongue\, avenues opened up to Williams. Headlining European tours\, major US festivals and a few trips to Australia later\, Hayward has carved out an impressive niche in the folk music business. \nWilliams’ previous release\, The Reef\, was produced by venerated songwriter\, friend and collaborator Jeffrey Foucault. Utilizing an impressive rhythm section of Billy Conway (Morphine) on drums and Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T\, Levon Helm\, Session Americana) on bass\, The Reef is an unequaled Americana record with soaring vocals and hooks that dig in deep. \n “The surprisingly soulful voice of Milwaukee-based singer/songwriter Hayward Williams emanates from a slight\, almost unassuming figure\, yet that voice is imbued with so much power\, it’s difficult to imagine it coming from anywhere other than midway between Memphis and Muscle Shoals… The Reef is an album to return to again and again.” – Allan Wilkinson\, Northern Sky Magazine (UK) \nPretenders was recorded in October of 2016 at Midwest Sound in Rockford\, IL under a full moon and the care of Dan McMahon and Jeremy Koester. Hayward and J. Hardin would co-produced the album. Charles Koltak\, who played drums on Williams’ Haymaker (2012) teamed up with Jeremy Moses Curtis in the rhythm section. Corey Matthew Hart of Madison\, WI (Lost Lakes) would lend his talented voice and guitar work to the project during one late night session. Finally\, Brooks Milgate would send his B3 performances in remotely from the east coast adding a layer to the project that would fit in with any Al Green classic. \n“Often dark\, always honest and in the groove\, Williams continues to break new ground in new traditional folk rock. There’s a ghostly spirit that floats through the songs on “Pretenders.” Williams is a wary caretaker of those spirits. His songs brim with the smoke and mirror lyricism of Leonard Cohen—with the rocker’s heart of Neil Young.” -Andy Moore ISTHMUS (Madison\, WI) \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:CLAUDIA SCHMIDT
DESCRIPTION:More than 4 decades as a touring professional have found Michigan native CLAUDIA SCHMIDT traversing North America as well as Europe in venues ranging from intimate clubs to 4\,000 seat theatres\, and festival stages in front of 25\,000 rapt listeners. She has recorded nineteen albums of mostly original songs\, exploring folk\, blues\, and jazz idioms featuring her acclaimed 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer playing. \n“If it were the intention of the creator or creators of this universe to perfectly blend together the night sky with moon and stars\, it might have been their intention as well to deliver Claudia Schmidt as their messenger of reminder.  To say that Schmidt is simply a performer with a talent to entertain would be a miscarriage of understatement. Schmidt takes her audiences into her world as easily as the child who discovers the endless universes that exist in a cardboard box….. \nSchmidt weaves her way through her concert in much the same manner as a jester. Interwoven anecdotes\, revealing her past and present\, bring people to expect a relationship between themselves and memories driven deep with the passage of time. The concert is an endless display of self-realization through humor and longing\, leaving audience members yearning to become an integral part of her world.”  Door County Advocate \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:VANCE GILBERT
DESCRIPTION:VANCE GILBERT burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90’s when buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking ’em dead at open mics. Born and raised in the Philadelphia area\, Vance started out hoping to be a jazz singer\, and then discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of acoustic folk music. Once word got out about Gilbert’s stage-owning singing and playing\, Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her Fat City Tour. \nNoted not only for being the ever consummate performer\, Gilbert has recorded 12 albums\, including 4 for Philo/Rounder Records and a duo album with friend Ellis Paul. Along with being opener of choice for artists as varied as Aretha Franklin\, Arlo Guthrie\, and Anita Baker\, 2006 and 2007 found Gilbert opening 140+ shows for comedian George Carlin. Most recently he’s the opener of choice for Paul Reiser and The Subdudes. \nConsidered by many to be an integral part of the national folk scene\, Gilbert’s approach to the acoustic singer songwriter idiom is significant. Gilbert’s compositions\, while frequently employing sophisticated melodies and harmonies that attest to his jazz roots\, remain sublime attestations to the storyteller’s craft. He even has a tune on a Grammy Nominated children’s album. How rounded is that? \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:TOM WASELCHUK & JOHN PARROTT Guitar Duo
DESCRIPTION:Bringing you vintage swing & country blues \nTom Waselchuk will be familiar to southern Wisconsin audiences from his work with his Americana band The Dang-Its (1998 to present) and Gypsy swing ensemble Harmonious Wail (2001-2011)\, with whom he toured the U.S. and abroad. He keeps up a busy schedule of solo and small ensemble performances including his newest collaborations with Mr. Parrott and with Chicago vocalist Jodi Jean Amble. Ms. Amble\, Mr. Waselchuk\, and another of Tom’s long-time guitar partners\, Doug Brown\, are currently performing as The Honey Pies. Tom’s guitar work demonstrates equal ease with a range of styles from jazz and pop to country and bluegrass. \nJohn Parrott is a rare species in the vast genus of acoustic guitarists. He plays the archtop rhythm guitar in a style that was common from the 1930s to the 1950s (think Count Basie\, Frank Sinatra\, and Bob Wills). For forty years he’s applied his skills\, sensibilities\, and adult chords to the field of String Jazz\, backing up such luminaries as John Hartford\, Vassar Clements\, and Steve Goodman. John is especially noted for his many years of laying down the swinging pulse for the great jazz mandolinists Jethro Burns and Don Stiernberg. John currently works and records with Milwaukee musicians Chris Hanson\, Robin Pluer and an assortment of jazz and swing artists. \nTogether they present a showcase of 20th century American music in a variety of genres with solidly swinging guitar artistry and more than acceptable vocals. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \n

SUMMARY:ROD PICOTT album release tour with Special Guest Ben de la Cour
DESCRIPTION:The son of a welder from rural New England\, ROD PICOTT is a masterful songwriter and soulful singer who carries with him as fine a suitcase of songs as you’ll find anywhere. Slaid Cleaves\, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Fred Eaglesmith have recorded Rod Picott songs. A former construction worker who hung up his tools when he released his debut CD in 2000\, Picott has carved a career for himself with a run of 6 beautifully crafted self released CDs over the last 13 years and a well earned reputation as a engaging\, emotion fueled performer.\nHang Your Hopes On Crooked Nail\, produced by RS Field [Billy Joe Shaver\, Justin Townes Earle\, Hayes Carll] is a collection of carefully crafted songs of rugged truth and beauty. Recorded at Joe Pisapia’s [KD Lang\, Guster] Middletree Studios in East Nashville the CD highlights Picott’s particular gift for exploring complex themes in common language. The eleven songs on Hang Your Hopes On a Crooked Nail offer an unblinking albeit wry gaze into our common heart and a clenched fist of defiance against the trials that tear at our humanity. \n“Accept Rod Picott for what he is; Americana of the highest order”    Julian Piper/ Acoustic Magazine \n“Gems that finely balance despair\, desire and optimism with dexterity    Arthur Wood/Maverick Magazine \n“Hangdog lyrics and deadpan delivery have the ability to strike a chord with anyone who has a heart.”    Alison Stokes/Country Music People \n2016 Kerrville New Folk winner BEN DE LA COUR has lived a different kind of life. \nAfter growing up in Brooklyn\, he set out to see the world as an amateur boxer\, bartender\, janitor and agricultural worker in Havana\, London\, Los Angeles and New Orleans before settling in Nashville. Influenced as much by giants such as Townes Van Zandt and Warren Zevon as by Nick Cave and The Gun Club\, Ben de la Cour has managed to meld all of these influences into a uniquely modern\, haunting and sometimes darkly humorous sound that is all his own. \n“Ben de la Cour’s songs are brimming with urgent authenticity. There is thematic hardness and vulnerability throughout\, but what distinguishes de la Cour’s songs from lesser guitar-and-anguished-vocals hacks is the raw humanity of his delivery and the potency of his way with words.” (No Depression) \nIn 2016 Ben de la Cour released ‘Midnight in Havana’\, eleven tightly crafted songs of what he likes to refer to as “Americanoir”. Tales of substance abuse\, murder and mental illness sit in perfect juxtaposition with occasional moments of playful lightheartedness and the ever-present glimmer of hope. However\, upon closer inspection\, darkness almost always wins…an unlikely hero\, but one that suits de la Cour. \n“Ben de la Cour bleeds the songs he sings. Within the understated instrumentation and de la Cour’s baritone voice lie stark\, haunting songscapes: moody recollections that recount the journey of a life that is not always pretty\, but proves better than one of mundane predictability.” (Turnstyled\, Junkpiled) \n“Ben de la Cour is a folk musician with the songwriting acumen of a young Nick Cave and the lyrical wisdom of a vitriolic Leonard Cohen. His songs are stark\, melancholic and packed with emotion and will send you collectively weak at the knees.” (Fresh Deer Meat) \nPlease call to reserve at 920-563-9391.
