SUMMARY:BEN FRANKLIN & BARON von STEUBEN vs. the PAINE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD
DESCRIPTION:Individuals of all political persuasions invoke the “Founding Fathers” to justify their positions – but have you ever wondered what the Founding Fathers themselves would think? \nThat’s the question at the heart of Ben Franklin & Baron von Steuben vs. the Paine County School Board\, the latest play from TAPIT/new works Ensemble Theater. The play is in two acts with a ten-minute intermission. \nThe play is inspired by a little-known historical fact – Baron von Steuben\, the Revolutionary War hero credited with transforming the Continental Army into a force capable of beating the British\, was a gay man. When a history teacher in the fictitious Paine County School District teaches this\, and conservative school board members get wind of it\, the stage is set for dramatic confrontation. \nAll this proves a bit much for Franklin and von Steuben\, who’ve been observing the action from the Great Beyond. They decide to risk intervening in contemporary affairs to set the record straight\, successfully transforming controversy into comedy and demonstrating that even if history doesn’t repeat itself\, it will still try almost anything to get your attention. \nWritten by Danielle Dresden\, Ben Franklin & Baron von Steuben vs. the Paine County School Board is directed by Stephen F. Murray and performed by Francisco Torres\, Krystal Lonsdale\, Liz Light\, Issac Brieske\, Donna Peckett\, and Dresden. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:KAIA FOWLER/ MARK DVORAK
DESCRIPTION:KAIA FOWLER’s music is a cross-blend of folk\, blues\, roots and rock. With her warm\, angelic voice and accomplished guitar work\, Kaia shares songs that explore life’s longings\, struggles and celebrations. Inspired by nature and the human condition\, Kaia’s songs resonate with strength and vulnerability as she explores a vast emotional and spiritual landscape. \n“Sharing songs helps me connect with others\,” says Kaia. “When I sing about my loves and losses\, concerns and inspirations\, fears and hopes\, I know we all share these experiences\, each in our own way. There\, in that moment\, because of the magic of music and words\, we understand one another better. We sense that we’re all in this together. I love that aspect of what I do most of all.” \n“Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” … “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” Americana Gazette \nMARK DVORAK is a modern day troubadour who has never stopped performing\, writing and recording. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” with “an encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs.” His original songs are described as “wondrous” and “profound.” Though Mark often appears in theaters and on festival stages\, he is also at home in a more intimate setting. His concerts are a mix of the familiar and the new\, traditional folk and standards from the American songbook. He plays authentic country blues guitar and picks great old-time banjo. \nMark enjoys involving his audiences in sing-along songs\, just like The Weavers used to do\, and mixes in his own well-crafted and infectious originals. Mark has a refreshing\, down-to-earth stage presence\, and is a very engaging performer. He sings with a clear\, signature voice\, and he likes to joke around with the folks who attend his shows. Throughout the program he’ll interject personal anecdotes and add a touch of history or social context to the performance. \n“Masterful” Chicago Tribune \n“The real deal. His show is funny\, passionate\, intimate & unforgettable” Old Town School of Folk Music \n“One of a vanishing breed. Although all of us benefit from the tradition\, Dvorak is one of the few who keep it alive” Utah Phillips \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:JOHN ELLIOTT
DESCRIPTION:JOHN ELLIOTT  writes gripping stream-of-consciousness songs that often take unexpected turns en route to delivering a powerful message. Chuck Schiele of The San Diego Troubadour wrote about Elliott’s lyrics: “They get in\, make their statement\, kick you in the teeth\, and get out before they start talking too much…And this lends to the urge of rolling any track to its beginning for another spin.” \nA native of Minnesota who now resides in California\, Elliott began playing at various Hollywood venues in 2001\, had expanded throughout southern California by 2003\, and later became a nationally touring artist. He has performed in several countries and every state except Hawaii. His music has been featured on hit TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Californication\, as well as in PASTE Magazine\, on NPR and Neil Young’s “Living With War” website. \nIn the last decade\, he has released eight genre-less studio albums on his own record label (Garland Lane) to an ever-expanding audience. All can be streamed at his website (www.thehereafterishere.com/ recordings). The newest releases are an unedited live performance (“Live in Austin”) and a compilation (“The Greatest Recordings According to Me: 2003-2013”). Both are available for purchase at shows on USB drives. John is trying to ever-so-gently do his part to end the compact disc. \nJohn also produces an almost monthly podcast of sorts called “Audiodes.” Audiodes defy explanation and must be heard to be understood (seven are included on the USB compilation). They include interviews\, meditations\, sound collages\, alternative versions of already released songs\, covers\, and more. Audiode Six is a stripped down\, acoustic rendering of his “Good Goodbyes” album; Audiode Fourteen is a new concept album about technology called “21st Century Bicycle.” \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:MARK FURST
DESCRIPTION:Mark is a native of Ireland who has lived in many varied places from London to the back woods of Tennessee but settled in 2001 with his lovely wife Janice here in Fort Atkinson. Being the son of a classical violinist/orchestra conductor\, hearing and appreciating music was always part of life\, however attempts at actually playing music while a youngster were not so successful. Practicing is WORK\, so making music was put on the back burner but the urge to make music has lasted through the years. In his early teens\, listening to radio Caroline (a pirate radio station broadcasting from international waters in the North Sea) exposed Mark to the wonders of early Pink Floyd\, Yes\, Genesis\, King Crimson and other progressive rock bands which have formed the basis of his musical tastes. Since then many other genres have opened up\, including Punk\, Blues\, Funk\, Bluegrass\, Electronica/Ambient and so many World Music influences it would be hard to list. \nYears on now the urge to make music still is there but not in a formal “learn this tune” approach so much as a “try this and see what happens” style. Along these lines Mark performed at the Carpe back in 2015 in the band FOMA with local friends Robert Preston and Carl Armstrong  which had a certain “free-form” approach to it. \nThis upcoming solo performance will incorporate guitar and synthesizer melodies using heavy effects and looping. The nature of using effects and electronics means that there is an element of improvisation which opens up avenues for textural and rhythmic exploration. The Space Between Stars theme is a nod to Mark’s ongoing love of science\, particularly astronomy and the amazing age that we live in. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:BILL MILLER
DESCRIPTION:Tickets sales will be set up through BROWN PAPER TICKETS. \nClick on this link: \n \nBILL MILLER is an award-winning Native American recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, painter\, and world-class accomplished flute player. Over the entirety\, Miller has produced over a dozen albums\, received three Grammy Awards\, numerous NAMA awards (including a “Lifetime Achievement Award) and led Wisconsin’s La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. He is now touring in support of a recent collaboration album Look Again To The Wind: Johnny Cash’s Bitter Tears Revisited where Bill has the title track. \nA Mohican Indian from northern Wisconsin\, Bill Miller has long been one of the most admired figures in the Native American music arena and beyond. As an award-winning recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, and painter\, he’s been a voice for the voiceless\, a link between two great and clashing civilizations. On Spirit Rain\, he walks the path of reconciliation in a set of fourteen heartfelt songs and evocative instrumentals. \nCo-produced by Bill and Michael von Muchow\, and written or co-written entirely by Bill\, Spirit Rain took the singer back to his roots. It was recorded at Actual Sound Studios in La Crosse\, WI\, not far from the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation he called home. “It was very different from being in a media center like L.A. or Nashville\,” says Bill. “Everyone turned off their cell phones. My buddies and I would go fishing on the Mississippi River. The recording was low-tech too: 16-tracks\, no digital. I could have pushed it technically\, but I felt closer to the spirit doing it this way.” \nWith his new album\, Chronicles of Hope\, Bill hopes to further inspire fans\, both present and future. “My faith in my Creator leaves me content with the gifts I have\,” he says\, “and I use them to enrich the world through His blessings. I choose to bless people rather than curse them\, to be a peacemaker rather than a warmaker.” As songs like “The Promise” make clear\, Bill feels just as passionate about saving the environment of North America\, the land of his forebears. ” I think we should feel as if we’re living in the Garden of Eden\, and we should take care of the land\,” he says emphatically. “I’ll always use my music to urge people to preserve the land.” \nBill has an equally active career as a painter. His work has been shown and sold in prestigious galleries around the country\, and he maintains a studio at his Nashville home\, where he lives with his wife and children. With so busy a personal and professional life\, it would seem that Bill Miller could cruise ever onward in easy contentment. But artists don’t work that way. “I’ve been given a lot of second chances in my life\,” he says. “I’ve been through alcoholism and other problems. I was lifted out of the ditch\, and I still see a blue sky above. After years of living against the grain\, I see things as rivers\, creeks and rainstorms\, as the liquid layers of my life.” \nBill is really excited about a brand new ROY ORBISON project.  Roy’s sons want him to do a record honoring their father\, interpreting some of Roy’s songs and doing some of his own songs inspired by Roy. \nBill’s heart is now beating well- at 95% and on its way up after heart failure last April.  That kept him off the road for awhile and he is glad to be back at work. \nIn case you missed the link above:

SUMMARY:A ROSE AMONG THORNS
DESCRIPTION:Fort Atkinson’s own Perry Baird\, Jeff Mason\, Tom Cook and Erica Flyte return once more for an evening of eclectic old favorites and new music (to them anyway). Perry\, Tom and Jeff are all now retired from their day jobs leaving Erica as the only one officially working for a living. Truly “A Rose Among Thorns”.  As things go at least three of them are a little slower off of the couch\, but their minds and fingers remain sharp and nimble as ever. A collection of instruments from guitar\, fiddle and bass to banjo\, mandolin\, celtic bouzouki and mandocello will make an appearance along with the combined voices of all four. \nThey’ll wind their way through a mix of contemporary and traditional folk\, pop\, and blues tunes\, plus a few novelties of highly suspect origin. \nPlease call to reserve at 920-563-9391.

SUMMARY:THE SUITCASE JUNKET
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the amazing MATT LORENZ as the SUITCASE JUNKET.  Please call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \nTHE SUITCASE JUNKET is a one-man tour de force out of Western Massachusetts. Matt has been road dogging for three years\, solo and with his band Rusty Belle\, touring with Chris Smithers\, David Wax Museum\, and Peter Mulvey.  \nRemember the first day you heard The Suitcase Junket…his songwriting is extraordinary… this is one of the most exciting records I’ve heard in years.” -Vin Scelsa of Idiot’s Delight on WFUV and Sirius/XM \n“Armed with vintage 1950s amps and a guitar he salvaged from a dumpster\, an old\, oversized suitcase he plays with his heel as a bass drum\, a baby shoe hitting a gas can\, a cook pot\, a circular saw blade and a box of bones and silverware for added percussion\, he let it rip! In my favorite session of the year\, The Suitcase Junket performs ‘Earth Apple’ from his latest album\, Make Time.” – Linda Fahey\, NPR’s Favorite Sessions of 2015 \nThe Suitcase Junket will release his Signature Sounds debut\, Dying Star\, on March 4th. The 7- song E.P. features five songs recorded during the making of Lorenz’s acclaimed 2015 album\, Make Time\, and two live tracks recorded at Northampton MA’s The Parlor Room. With Dying Star\, The Suitcase Junket is poised to make the jump from one of New England’s best-kept roots star secrets\, to a household name. \nArtist\, tinkerer\, tunesmith\, swamp Yankee\, Matt Lorenz is a one-man salvage specialist singing into the hollow of a Dumpster guitar\, slipping a broken bottleneck onto the slide finger\, railing on a box of twisted forks and bones\, rocking till every sound is ragged at its edges\, till the house is singing back. Then\, unplugging all the amps and letting one mountain ballad soar over the raw strings on that guitar. On top of all this is the ethereal edge of his overtone throat-singing. \nEvery night is a hard-driving\, blues-grinding\, throat-singing search-and-rescue junket. Sooner or later everything rusts\, busts\, and gets tossed into the junk heap: iron\, bones\, leather\, hot rods\, muskrats\, the night\, the heart. The goal is to recover it. To waste nothing. To create new ways from old. This is The Suitcase Junket. \nMatt Lorenz was raised in Cavendish\, Vermont\, the son of teachers. He learned to sing by copying his sister Kate. (The siblings are two-thirds of the touring trio Rusty Belle.) Lorenz graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst\, Massachusetts\, in 2004\, having taught himself to throat-sing thanks to a South Indian cooking class. On moving day\, he pulled his guitar\, filled with mold and worse for wear\, from a dorm Dumpster. He fixed it up and started pulling songs out of it. That was the beginning. \nThe Suitcase Junket is filling rooms and drawing festival crowds all over his native New England and beyond\, from Signal Kitchen near the Canadian border to Wisconsin’s Mile of Music Festival\, from Ireland’s pubs to Mountain Jam in the Catskills\, from opening nights for Lake Street Dive and Charlie Musselwhite to Mountain Stage in West Virginia. He caught the attention of National Public Radio who chose his video session for “Earth Apple” from his 2015 album Make Time as one of the year’s favorite sessions. \nMatt has self-released three albums prior to Dying Star: Sever and Lift (2009) and Knock It Down. (2011) and Make Time (2015). \n“Make Time truly travels to various destinations of musical fortitude and emotion[…]It’s one hell of a ride that holds its resonance well after the record has stopped spinning.” – No Depression. \n“If croons could kill\, this one-man band would be a bounty hunter. Armed with a unique\, self-sufficient approach to raw instrumentation\, The Suitcase Junket is an artisan of song\, bending\, forging and sharpening each piece into an emotional tool.” -Performer Magazine.

SUMMARY:TIM GRIMM and the FAMILY BAND
DESCRIPTION:TIM is a bit of a Renaissance man in the performing arts world. He has for the past 15 years\, blended his love for songwriting\, travel\, and the storytelling of acting (theatre\, film and television). \nTim returns to the Carpe with his musical family in tow–Connor Grimm on bass\, Jackson Grimm on banjo\, octave mando\, guitar and vocals\, and Jan Lucas-Grimm on harmonica and vocals.  They’ve just completed a 6 week run at The Indiana Repertory Theatre working on the Bicentennial production- FINDING HOME: Indiana at 200- for which they wrote and performed songs and the score. Their song WOODY’S LANDLORD was the #1 song on Folk radio in 2016\, and threads the narrative of Woody Guthrie’s landlord (Fred Trump) and Tim’s relationship with debate-team mate- Mike Pence. \nTim has built a reputation as a storytelling songwriter of some note in the US and Europe\, and his sons bring a blend of bluegrass. old-time\, and rock and roll into the mix. It’s all shaken up but it’s still all about the song. It’s folk music in a time when we really need it. The Grimms have just\nfinished another recording to be released in March\, entitled\,  A STRANGER IN THIS TIME. This is the first project that they’ve done entirely as a family and includes several family co-writes. It pulls no punches as we find ourselves on the brink of a new America. \nThey head off to tour Europe for 3 months in early April. They are very happy to return to Cafe Carpe\, and hope to see YOU there.  On inauguration night\, no less. \nListen to Tim and the family here. \n  \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:RADIO WRANGLERS
DESCRIPTION:Apparently there some confusion has arisen as to the time of this event.  The Wranglers and the Carpe now agree that it is at 8:30. \nTHE RADIO WRANGLERS hail from Wisconsin and are heavily influenced by the sounds of the 1930’s\, 40’s and 50’s with influences ranging from Country and Western\, Western Swing\, and Honky Tonk. The band has had the pleasure of playing at Opryland in Nashville\, and opening for such acts as Wayne Hancock and Carolyn Martin’s Western Swing Band. They strive to encapsulate the sounds of traditional 1940’s and 50’s Country and Western music\, while adding their own tunes to the long-lasting tradition they so greatly admire. From Waltzes to Boogies\, hot swing to high and lonesome blues\, you do not want to miss this band’s unique blend of true American music! \nDrawing influences from such artists as Bob Wills\, Ernest Tubb\, Milton Brown\, Jack Gurhrie\, Tex Williams\, Webb Pierce\, Hank Thompson\, and Hank Williams\, The Radio Wranglers also write original music with a taste of the past. Fronted by the twin fiddle team of Blaine And Ruthie McQuinn on fiddle and vocals\, The Radio Wranglers are Danny Tyksinski on lead guitar\, and Ed Novak on rhythm guitar\, and Peyton Lencho on doghouse bass. \nThe Radio Wranglers have had the good fortune of playing the Nashville Boogie for two consecutive years\, including being the band for the Western Wear Fashion show! And in November 2015\, they have been nominated for an Ameripolitan Award for Western Swing group. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.
