SUMMARY:ELLIS PAUL
DESCRIPTION:Carpe will open at 5:30. \nPlease buy tickets in advance using this link: \n \nELLIS PAUL \nEllis Paul is a key figure in what has become known as the Boston school of songwriting\, a literate\, provocative and urbanely romantic folk-pop style that helped ignite the folk revival of the 1990s. His folk-pop music songs have appeared in movies and on television\, and are said to bridge the gap between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. \n“Ellis Paul is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation. And for many of us he is the face of contemporary folk music. Few are as smart\, as literate\, as poetic as Paul. I cannot think of another artist on the acoustic music scene is better loved by fans\, or more respected by his contemporaries.” \nSome artists document their lives through their music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both\, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era over- all. Woody Guthrie comes to mind\, and so does Bob Dylan. Bruce Springsteen certainly as well. Yet few others\, for whatever genius they may possess\, can relate their own history to the history experienced by those who find that common bond\, be it in a coming of age\, living through the same realities or sharing similar experiences. \nEllis Paul is one of those gifted singer/songwriters. Though some may refer to him as a folksinger\, he is more\, for lack of a better word\, a singular storyteller\, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express the feelings\, thoughts and sensibilities that most people can relate to in one way or another\, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes. The hope for redemption. Descriptions of those things that are both near and dear. The sharing of love…\, intimate\, passionate and enduring.

SUMMARY:ALBERT LEE BAND
DESCRIPTION:Show is likely to sell out. Buy tickets in advance using this link:\n\nKnown for his signature Ernie Ball guitar and lightning speed picking\, ALBERT LEE has not only worked with some of the biggest names in music but he has also maintained a solo career of his own.  Bill could not believe our good fortune (and yours) when he got the request for Albert to play our little room. Albert will be accompanied by his band\, J.T. Thomas on keyboards\, Will McGregor on bass\, and Jason Harrison Smith (or another) on drums. \n“ONE OF THE FINEST GUITAR PLAYERS WHO EVER WALKED THIS EARTH…”Vince Gill \nAlbert was born on December 21\, 1943 in Herefordshire\, England\, before moving and growing up in Blackheath\, London. He was first introduced to music with the piano\, taking lessons aged seven\, learning the classics and pop tunes before the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis inspired him to take up guitar. \nAlbert was treated one Christmas to a Hofner President acoustic arch-top\, and from there he never looked back. Spurred on by the recordings of Jimmy Bryant\, Buddy Holly and The Crickets\, Gene Vincent and The Everly Brothers\, Albert left school at sixteen and turned pro\, getting regular gigs at the 2 i’s Coffee Bar and The Flamingo Club in London – first with Bob Xavier’s band\, and then with The Jury. He replaced Jimmy Page in The Crusaders before joining Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds in ‘64. \n\n\n\n\n\nHe soon found his favoured guitar of choice\, the Fender Telecaster\, whilst everyone else was playing Gibson Les Pauls and Stratocasters. Albert admitted to feeling like the odd man out as his appreciation for American country artists grew\, and he formed the band Country Fever. He began working with Poet & The One Man Band\, who later turned into Heads\, Hands & Feet when Jerry Donahue and Pat Donaldson (of Country Fever) were replaced by Albert and Chas Hodges. Their self-titled debut album featured the original “Country Boy”\, now synonymous with Albert’s trademark picking style. \nThe U.S eventually beckoned\, and Albert began doing session work and briefly toured with The Crickets in 1973. He moved to Los Angeles\, where he met his idols Phil and Don Everly\, and Don invited Albert to play with him and pedal steel legend Buddy Emmons. After working on Don’s second album\, Albert left to join Joe Cocker’s band and was replaced by Lindsey Buckingham. \nAlbert’s reputation was growing as he moved to Encino\, and met his wife Karen whilst rehearsing up in Santa Barbara with Joe Cocker and his band before they went on the road. He contributed to Cocker’s “Sting Ray”\, and was then approached by A&M about putting together a solo album. \nAt a pivotal point in his career\, Albert was asked by Emmylou Harris to replace James Burton – one of his guitar heroes – who was leaving for Elvis Presley’s band. In 1976 he joined the Hot Band\, and his incredible guitar work came to the fore on the “Luxury Liner” LP. Albert released his first solo album “Hiding”\, produced by Brian Ahern\, which featured perhaps the definite version of “Country Boy” with Emmylou on backing vocals and Ricky Skaggs on fiddle. \nWhen he returned to London in 1978 for session recording\, Albert met Eric Clapton. He was invited to join his band and played on Clapton’s live album “Just One Night”\, which featured Albert on lead vocals for a cover of Mark Knopfler’s “Setting Me Up”. Albert would work with Eric for five years before he left and released his second solo album\, the self-titled “Albert Lee” in 1982. \nAlbert fulfilled his boyhood dream to play with the Everly Brothers in 1983 when he acted as guitarist and musical director for their reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Since then he would regularly tour with the Everlys on and off for 20 years. After two instrumental albums – “Speechless” (1986) and “Gagged But Not Bound” (1987) – steel player Gerry Hogan invited Albert to headline at a festival in Newbury\, England – fronting his own band for the very first time\, Hogan’s Heroes. \nAs Albert toured with Hogan’s Heroes through the late 80s\, he began his long association with Ernie Ball Music Man\, who would eventually (through many iterations) produce his signature guitar that he tours and records with today. In 2002 he would join Eric Clapton\, Tom Petty\, Paul McCartney and other music legends on stage at the Concert for George at the Royal Albert Hall. \nAlbert also received a Grammy Award in 2002 for his contribution to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” featured on “Earl Scruggs and Friends”. He appeared for the first time at Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2007\, now an annual appearance\, and has toured periodically for the last few years with ex-Stones bassist Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings\, performing with Georgie Fame. Joining his hero James Burton\, along with the likes of Vince Gill and John Jorgenson\, Albert won a Grammy for his performance on Brad Paisley’s instrumental “Cluster Pluck” in 2009. \nShow is likely to sell out. SUMMARY:A ROSE AMONG THORNS
DESCRIPTION:This quartet of local musicians offers pleasing melodies\, tight musicianship\, and stirring renditions of songs from folk\, pop\, blues\, country\, and Celtic traditions. First performing on Café Carpe’s stage two years ago\, the foursome includes Jeff Mason on acoustic guitar\, bass\, and vocals; Perry Baird on vocals and acoustic guitar; Tom Cook on bass\, mandolin\, banjo\, and a host of other stringed instruments; and Angela Licari on violin. Jeff and Perry played at Café Carpe as solo acts and as a duo in the mid-1980s\, renewing their musical partnership about five years ago. Tom\, retired band teacher at Fort High School\, came on board in 2015\, and a violin was added in 2016\, with Angela capably taking over that duty last year. \nThe guys are retired from their day jobs and reliving their younger days (as they remember them)\, while Angela provides the more youthful exuberance. All are familiar to local audiences as members of other musical ensembles\, some of which include Jeff with the Merry Horde\, Expanded Waist Band\, and Blue Stew; Perry with The Buzzards; Tom with Madison Brass and Guitarcheology; and Angela with Madpolecats. The Rose Among Thorns collaboration gives each a chance to contribute favorite—often eclectic—songs for interpretation by the group. Songs featuring moving stories and themes\, energetic instrumentals\, soothing vocals\, and singable choruses are all part of typical Rose Among Thorns musical sets.

As an award-winning recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, and painter\, he’s been a voice for the voiceless\, a link between two great and clashing civilizations. On Spirit Rain\, he walks the path of reconciliation in a set of fourteen heartfelt songs and evocative instrumentals. \nCo-produced by Bill and Michael von Muchow\, and written or co-written entirely by Bill\, Spirit Rain took the singer back to his roots. It was recorded at Actual Sound Studios in La Crosse\, WI\, not far from the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation he called home. “It was very different from being in a media center like L.A. or Nashville\,” says Bill. “Everyone turned off their cell phones. My buddies and I would go fishing on the Mississippi River. The recording was low-tech too: 16-tracks\, no digital. I could have pushed it technically\, but I felt closer to the spirit doing it this way.” \nWith his new album\, Chronicles of Hope\, Bill hopes to further inspire fans\, both present and future. “My faith in my Creator leaves me content with the gifts I have\,” he says\, “and I use them to enrich the world through His blessings. I choose to bless people rather than curse them\, to be a peacemaker rather than a warmaker.” As songs like “The Promise” make clear\, Bill feels just as passionate about saving the environment of North America\, the land of his forebears. ” I think we should feel as if we’re living in the Garden of Eden\, and we should take care of the land\,” he says emphatically. “I’ll always use my music to urge people to preserve the land.” \nBill has an equally active career as a painter. His work has been shown and sold in prestigious galleries around the country\, and he maintains a studio at his Nashville home\, where he lives with his wife and children. With so busy a personal and professional life\, it would seem that Bill Miller could cruise ever onward in easy contentment. But artists don’t work that way. “I’ve been given a lot of second chances in my life\,” he says. “I’ve been through alcoholism and other problems. I was lifted out of the ditch\, and I still see a blue sky above. After years of living against the grain\, I see things as rivers\, creeks and rainstorms\, as the liquid layers of my life.” \nBill is really excited about a brand new ROY ORBISON project.  Roy’s sons want him to do a record honoring their father\, interpreting some of Roy’s songs and doing some of his own songs inspired by Roy. \nBill’s heart is now beating well- at 95% and on its way up after heart failure.  That kept him off the road for awhile and he is glad to be back at work. \n

SUMMARY:CHRIS KASPER
DESCRIPTION:“Nothing cuts to the core like a simple song\,” says CHRIS KASPER. More than a dozen years into his acclaimed career\, the singer/songwriter gets back to the bluesy basics with his fifth album\, O\, the Fool. \nInspired by Delta blues\, folk music\, and the string arrangements of Hollywood film scores\, O\, the Fool was recorded on both ends of an 800-mile move that took Kasper from Philadelphia to Nashville. He’d already spent much of his adulthood on the road\, traveling from city to city\, building his fanbase one show at a time. Meanwhile\, back at home\, his friends were putting down roots and starting families of their own. Kasper couldn’t help but question his own choices\, and it’s that swirl of contrasting feelings — uncertainty\, determination\, and wanderlust — that fuels O\, the Fool. \n“It’s about traveling\,” he says of the 13-song\, self-produced album\, “and then second-guessing your travels once you’ve arrived at your destination. It’s about coming to terms with the thing that makes you think\, ‘Ok\, maybe this isn’t the right place for me\, but I am here\, so I should make it work. This is where life has brought me.'” \nThe album’s title was born during a coffeeshop meeting with a friend\, who spilled a pack of tarot cards across the table. The first card was the Fool: a traveller with a bag slung over his shoulder\, headed toward some unknown destination. The illustration reminder Kasper of himself. Weeks later\, another friend found the same card and brought it to Kasper\, saying the two troubadours resembled one another. Kasper agreed. “The card embodies that feeling of wandering\,” he explains. “It reminded me of the journey that music takes you on\, and you can’t predict where it’s gonna take you.” \nFrom a songwriting perspective\, O\, the Fool is a simple\, straightforward album. The chord progressions are basic\, influenced by the no-frills approach of blues musicians and early 20th century folksingers. The arrangements\, on the other hand\, are downright lush\, with Kasper taking inspiration from the epic\, sweeping scores of old western movies. He engineered the string parts himself\, working with multi-instrumentalist Kylie Ryan — who contributions to the album include viola\, cello\, and violin — to create orchestral swells. Lush and beautiful\, the songs on O\, the Fool show Kasper’s capabilities not only as a songwriter and evocative vocalist\, but as a producer\, too. \n“This is a realization album\,” says the songwriter\, whose past travels have included opening gigs with the Wood Brothers\, Amos Lee\, and G Love. “It’s almost like a soundtrack — a blues album meets a western movie. When your songs are simple and direct\, you can go nuts with the presentation. You can strip away the fat from your writing\, but still turn the entire arrangement into something bigger. That way\, the punches hit harder.” \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve. \n

SUMMARY:KAIA FOWLER
DESCRIPTION:With soaring vocals and accomplished guitar work\, KAIA shares songs that explore life’s struggles and joys\, drawing on folk\, blues\, roots\, and rock traditions. Inspired by nature and the human condition\, Kaia’s songs resonate with strength and vulnerability as she explores a vast emotional landscape. With over 20 years as a performing singer-songwriter\, Kaia draws from a large repertoire of original material and select cover songs by artists such as John Prine\, Carole King\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Stevie Nicks. \nKaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical poetry\, rich melodies and engaging chord progressions. She placed as a finalist for the 2012 Great River Folk Festival songwriters contest. Two songs from her 2010 album Seams of My Heart received radio play on Woman of Substance Radio. The Americana Gazette album review had this to say about Kaia’s songwriting: “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” It continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010 issue). Kaia’s latest album\, released October 2015\, is an EP titled All The Way\, dedicated to the memory of her husband Scott R. Jaeger who died of pancreatic cancer in 2013. A portion of the proceeds from sales of All The Way benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. She is currently working on her third studio album. \nSee videos of Kaia’s recent performance at a house concert and listen to samples from her albums at her website.

SUMMARY:GARNET ROGERS- sold out
DESCRIPTION:Click on the link to purchase your tickets:   \nThe big Canadian is back. \nIn a darkened bedroom\, lit only be the amber glow from an old floor model radio\, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds\, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry\, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later\, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. \nWithin ten years\, and barely out of high school\, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full- time working musician with his older brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. \nHailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”\, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth\, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range\, and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. \n“Garnet Rogers is capable of awe-inspiring and unpredictable stuff – and that includes more than just music”

SUMMARY:ANNA TIVEL & JEFFREY MARTIN
DESCRIPTION:We will open at 5:30. \nANNA TIVEL and JEFFREY MARTIN  – you can’t go wrong with this double hitter \nANNA TIVEL has spent some quality hours in a dodge caravan repeating lyrical lines over and over until the words fall in time with the windshield wipers\, or until the gas light comes on. \nAnna gained a number of fans by playing with PETER MULVEY for 5 nights of last year’s Lamplighter series.  We count ourselves proudly among them. \nA nationally touring artist with a deep love of quiet stories\, Anna is beginning to carve a place for herself in the songwriting world. She was a winner at this year’s Kerrville Songwriting Contest\, and has shared the stage with heroes and friends across the country. \nAnna was raised in the forest and farmland of rural northern Washington and currently calls Portland\, OR home. Her songs reflect both the stark colors of small town life\, and the hard\, sharp lines of the city. Anna’s album\, Before Machines\, was hailed by No Depression as “raw\, yet superbly composed and executed\, intelligent\, personal and deeply expressive.” Her newest album\, Heroes Waking Up\, was produced by guitar mastermind Austin Nevins (Josh Ritter\, Anais Mitchell\, Kris Delmhorst). The album was released by Portland’s well-loved Fluff and Gravy Records and called “vastly expressive in its stark beauty\,” by Glide Magazine. \n“Portland songwriter Anna Tivel is a favorite over at Hearth. She’s a deft\, clever songwriter with a knack for observing the small\, subtle beauties of our lives.” – Kithfolk \n“Raw yet superbly composed and executed\, as well as intelligent and personal and deeply expressive in their experience\, observation and storytelling\, the fifteen tracks on Before Machines don’t just serve as an absorbing and utterly worthwhile listen but as indisputable evidence that the folk scene is in good hands with both its longtime artists and newcomers alike.” – No Depression \n“To be sure\, these are organic songs that freely reveal the poetry of the mind\, heart and soul\, the sharp imagery of the world translated into sound\, and both the simple and complex things represented sentimentally and at length.” – Examiner \n“Anna Tivel’s voice is haunting\, exhibiting the timbre of a precocious child\, whispering to a teddy bear underneath the covers.” – The Bluegrass Situation \n“Anna Tivel brings a raft of beautiful songs with brine-soaked images of Pacific Northwest tidepools\, oceans\, and the birds that wheel above them in the gray skies.” – Devon Leger\, No Depression \nShe and JEFFREY MARTIN are touring all over the United States.  Jeffrey quit teaching to go back on the road. \nBorn in Texas in 1984\, Jeffrey Martin quickly made his way to the Northwest where he discovered in nature and in people what would be the deep well for much of his songwriting. His father was a lover of stories\, especially in music\, and Martin was raised with a careful ear cocked and listening to Neil Young\, John Prine\, Jackson Browne\, Bob Dylan\, and Harry Chapin. He was fortunate to live in Eugene\, OR for much of his adolescence\, where in the late 90’s and early 2000’s there was a strong and steady flow of folk songwriters touring through. Leo Kotke\, John Gorka\, and David Wilcox were huge inspirations. \nIn 2011 Jeffrey Martin caught a lucky break\, a chance encounter with a prominent local promoter at a rowdy dive bar. Through that meeting he was invited to open for Tracy Grammer and then David Wilcox\, which then lead to a few small tours\, and eventually a finalist slot in a national songwriting competition in New York City and a successful national tour. \nMartin’s music has been likened to the styles of Josh Ritter and Joe Pug\, with an attention to storytelling reminiscent of Harry Chapin and John Prine. Since 2011 Jeffrey has released two full length albums (Gold in the Water (2011) and Dogs in the Daylight (2014))\, and one EP entitled Build a Home (2012.) Also in 2014\, Martin signed to the sensational Portland record label Fluff and Gravy Records\, where he still makes a happy musical home\, along with fellow artists Mike Coykendall\, Nick Jaina\, Fernando\, Dan Stuart\, Richmond Fontaine\, Anna Tivel and others. \n“He’s an incredibly rare find among today’s glut of singer-songwriters: a songwriter whose songs are immediately affecting. These are the kind of songs that can change you.” –Devon Leger NO DEPRESSION \n“Jeffrey Martin can write a heavy-hitter and sing it too. He’s good backstage company\, and a solid bet for any club in the country…” –Jeffrey Foucault \nPORTLAND MERCURY: “Jeffrey Martin’s music is not widely known\, which is a shame\, because he might be the best songwriter in Portland. With lyrics that read like Raymond Carver stories and a voice that’s one breath away from breaking completely apart\, Martin’s songs are beautiful\, sparse\, and utterly devastating. . . . If there is any justice in the world\, Martin’s music will soon reach a wider audience and inflict devastation on a much larger scale.” \nPlease call to reserve at 920-563-9391.

SUMMARY:PAPER BIRDS w/ Claudia Russell\, Katie Dahl\, Bruce Kaplan & Rich Higdon
DESCRIPTION:  \nThere is power\, and beauty\, in numbers. In the case of PAPER BIRDS\, the magic number is four. Fronting this pop-up band are two superlative songwriters: CLAUDIA RUSSELL and KATIE DAHL. Claudia is a veteran of the California Americana music scene and has won songwriting honors from Boston to Texas. Wisconsin’s own Katie Dahl is gaining a reputation as one of the Midwest’s best young songwriters\, writing keenly literate songs planted deep in the ground of her Door County home. Her velvety alto carries a keen sense of melody that makes for memorable and satisfying music moments. Add Dahl’s husband\, Rich Higdon\, on bass and percussion\, and spot on accompaniment from Russell’s spouse\, Bruce Kaplan\, on mandolin and guitar\, and you have a wonderfully adept musical outfit. \nPaper Birds was born of friendship. The four are fans and friends of each other have long shared stages when one duo would travel to the home state of the other. (Russell lives in California and Dahl in Wisconsin). So in 2015 Paper Birds was officially chartered. And though the band’s performances are somewhat rare\, there is nothing thrown together about it. This quartet is as magic as any Blue Moon and has won over audiences at Fishstock\, The Blackhawk Folk Society\, Chicago’s nationally syndicated radio concert\, FOLKSTAGE\, venues across California\, and of course\, here at Cafe Carpe. \nCLAUDIA RUSSELL– Known for her expressive voice and tightly-knit songs\, Russell brings wonder to an eclectic array of music. She has just completed her fourth CD\, produced by the Bay Area’s Grammy winning Bluegrass icon Laurie Lewis. He 2013 CD\, “All Our Luck is Changing\,” was hailed as “a masterpiece” by American Songwriter Magazine. \nRussell has sung with John Gorka\, Tish Hinojosa\, and shared bills with Cheryl Wheeler\, Peter Mulvey and the later great Dave Carter – to name a few. A veteran of American Folklore Theater (aka Northern Sky Theater)\, Russell has performed in AFT shows such as “Old Friends\,” “Fish and Whistle” and Good Night Irene.” Of her work for AFT\, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said’ Russell has a voice that was born to sing folk music – she breaks hearts.” \nKATIE DAHL – Still in her early 30s\, Wisconsin singer-songwriter Katie has performed her original songs everywhere from the dusty cliff country of Mali\, West Africa\, to the winding canals of southern France\, to the cedar forests of the American northwoods. The depth and power of Katie’s alto voice\, the literate candor of her original songs\, and the easy humor of her live performances have earned her numerous songwriting awards\, as well as the chance to share stages with such luminaries as Dar Williams\, Peter Mulvey\, Julie Gold\, and Cheryl Wheeler. Katie is also a playwright whose musical Victory Farm premiered to high acclaim in 2012 and has since been made into a live cast album. \nMike Fischer of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that Katie Dahl “combine[s] old-fashioned populism\, an abiding love of the land\, and wickedly smart love songs\, all delivered in a rich and expressive alto.” \n“Crowns\,” the opening track from her third CD “Ordinary Band\,” hit number one on the folk radio charts for July 2015. \nCheck out the quartet on YouTube: https://goo.gl/8G1rjE \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:SONOFMEL & the SLIDEMAN
DESCRIPTION:Sonofmel is the psuedonym of Hayward\, Wisconsin’s John Adler. He’s a deep thinker who sees symbols and human connection in all things\, and his album “Springtime in a Foreign City” details moments of his life travelling the world. He’s joined by Jordan “Slideman” Grunow of Ashland\, WI\, for a memorable Scenic Route full of original tunes and great conversation. \n“Sometimes it takes traveling far from home to find out where you come from…\n…after 20 years of wandering the globe and combing the sites\, lights\, sounds\, and shadows for signs of the sacred sprung from the profane\, time warrants a return to the mid west with a time-worn guitar\, fistfuls of chords strung up with verse\, bringing the foreign home to the familiar… These songs come from the world-weary road\, plied from places and faces met from Baku to Berkeley\, Anchorage to Ankara\, from recluse to royalty…”  –sonofmel \n“Sonofmel is one of the best songwriters out there.“– Gary Storm\, Oil of Dog Radio \n“Dylanesque songwriting delivered with a voice like Johnny Cash.” – Jeffrey Jones\, WOJB Music Director \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.
