SUMMARY:RAY BONNEVILLE
DESCRIPTION:RAY BONNEVILLE is a poet of the demimonde who didn’t write his first song until his early 40s\, some 20 years after he started performing. But with a style that sometimes draws comparisons to JJ Cale and Daniel Lanois\, this blues-influenced\, New Orleans-inspired “song and groove man\,” as he’s been so aptly described\, luckily found his rightful calling. Born in Quebec\, his family moved to Boston when he was 12. He served a year in Vietnam as a Marine\, struggled and overcame drug addiction\, earned a pilot’s license in Colorado\, then moved to Alaska\, then Seattle\, and Paris and New Orleans. But it took a close call while piloting a seaplane across the Canadian wilderness to make him decide it was time to get busy writing songs – gritty narratives inspired by a lifetime of hard-won knowledge set against his gritty\, soulful guitar and harmonica playing. \n\nHe’s since earned many accolades\, including a Juno Award for his 1999 album\, Gust of Wind. His post-Katrina ode\, “I Am the Big Easy\,” earned the International Folk Alliance’s 2009 Song of the Year Award\, and in 2012\, Bonneville won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge. He has guested on albums by Mary Gauthier\, Gurf Morlix\, Eliza Gilkyson\, Ray Wylie Hubbard and other prominent artists\, and shared songwriting credits with Tim O’Brien\, Phil Roy and Morlix\, among others. Slaid Cleaves placed Bonneville’s “Run Jolee Run” on his lauded 2009 album\, Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away. \nEasy Gone\, Ray’s fourth album for Red House Records\, takes listeners to some of the dark spaces and exotic places Bonneville has gone on his own travels. An Austin resident since 2006\, Bonneville still puts the rhythms and soul of New Orleans into much of his music. His songs carry a groove and momentum that’s uniquely his — and will always be a part of him\, no matter where he roams. \n“Like gunpowder and opium.”\n— Ray Wylie Hubbard \n“Bad Man’s Blood confirms Bonneville’s stature as of Americana’s foremost singer-songwriters.”\n— Austin Chronicle \n“a master of the slow burn\, the gentle funk\, the infectious rhythm.”\n— The Ottawa Citizen \n“poetic…infectious…Bad Man’s Blood emerges as Bonneville’s magnum opus”\n— All Music Guide \n“an absolute master…one of the most skilled songwriters of that dark slow smoldering yet fiery blues/roots music”\n— FAME \n“Few can ride a groove like Canada-born\, U.S.-raised Ray Bonneville.”\n— No Depression \n\nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:HAYWARD WILLIAMS/ ZAK TROJANO
DESCRIPTION:ZAK TROJANO is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist\, a finger-style guitar player\, a fly-fisherman\, and a beer drinker. He watches more than he talks\, the guy at the end of the bar nursing a drink while the afternoon light angles in\, letting the conversation pile up around him like snowfall. \nHe grew up in New Hampshire\, outside of town in a cabin built by his parents. His father was a drummer who held down a regular country gig\, and nights after work he would loosen his tie and show his son the finer points of Ginger Baker and Elvin Jones. In New Hampshire they drove around in trucks\, and Prine and Dylan cassettes showed up in most of those trucks. Zak made Eagle Scout\, got his knots down. Then it was college and out\, wandering the country from the desert Southwest to Great Plains until he ran out of money\, washing windows to work up the bus fare home. \nAfter a while it seemed like he ought to write some songs\, and he did: heavy songs with a light touch; an AM radio throwback voice and an intricate finger-style technique framed by a drummer’s rhythm and sharpened by years of immersion in the work of players as various as John Fahey\, Merle Travis\, and Chet Atkins. In over a decade writing\, recording\, and performing music professionally – sharing studios and stages with his band Rusty Belle\, or supporting touring acts like Chris Smither\, Kris Delmhorst\, Jeffrey Foucault\, and Peter Mulvey – Zak Trojano has evolved his own thing: a warm baritone paired with an old Martin guitar\, floating above spare lines of cello and lap steel\, horns and brushes\, with a deceptively simple lyricism that on repeated listening shows that the fellow at the end of the bar doesn’t say much\, but he’s worth hearing. \nHAYWARD WILLIAMS is a veteran singer/songwriter from Milwaukee\, WI. With six full length records under his belt\, Williams is set to release his latest effort: Pretenders.  This record is yet another swan dive into the deep end of the Americana/Soul world that Hayward tends to reside in. \nGrowing up in Wisconsin in the 80’s and 90’s convinced Hayward Williams to search for something more out there in the world. Foregoing higher education\, he joined a band and learned much about what to do and what not to do in the Midwest music scene. Playing in pubs for many years \, getting thick skin and finding a notably sharp tongue\, avenues opened up to Williams. Headlining European tours\, major US festivals and a few trips to Australia later\, Hayward has carved out an impressive niche in the folk music business. \nWilliams’ previous release\, The Reef\, was produced by venerated songwriter\, friend and collaborator Jeffrey Foucault. Utilizing an impressive rhythm section of Billy Conway (Morphine) on drums and Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T\, Levon Helm\, Session Americana) on bass\, The Reef is an unequaled Americana record with soaring vocals and hooks that dig in deep. \n“The surprisingly soulful voice of Milwaukee-based singer/songwriter Hayward Williams emanates from a slight\, almost unassuming figure\, yet that voice is imbued with so much power\, it’s difficult to imagine it coming from anywhere other than midway between Memphis and Muscle Shoals… The Reef is an album to return to again and again.” – Allan Wilkinson\, Northern Sky Magazine (UK) \nPretenders was recorded in October of 2016 at Midwest Sound in Rockford\, IL under a full moon and the care of Dan McMahon and Jeremy Koester. Hayward and J. Hardin would co-produced the album. Charles Koltak\, who played drums on Williams’ Haymaker (2012) teamed up with Jeremy Moses Curtis in the rhythm section. Corey Matthew Hart of Madison\, WI (Lost Lakes) would lend his talented voice and guitar work to the project during one late night session. Finally\, Brooks Milgate would send his B3 performances in remotely from the east coast adding a layer to the project that would fit in with any Al Green classic. \n“Often dark\, always honest and in the groove\, Williams continues to break new ground in new traditional folk rock. There’s a ghostly spirit that floats through the songs on “Pretenders.” Williams is a wary caretaker of those spirits. His songs brim with the smoke and mirror lyricism of Leonard Cohen—with the rocker’s heart of Neil Young.” -Andy Moore ISTHMUS (Madison\, WI \n  \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:ERIC MILLER on the viola da gamba
DESCRIPTION:Currently residing in Madison Wisconsin\, Nebraska native ERIC MILLER is a musician with unusually wide interests. He slips easily between genres\, but as a performer his heart lives in the world of the 17th and 18th centuries\, in particular music composed for the viola da gamba. This instrument\, having seven strings and frets like a lute\, requires an especially sophisticated bowing technique and was often compared to the human voice and considered the most noble of instruments. The cello\, which lies in a similar range\, eventually displaced the the gamba due to its greater power\, but over the centuries the viola da gamba has always been cultivated by a few\, and recently has grown into a rebirth around the world as its nuanced sound still speaks to the modern soul\, perhaps more than ever. \nOver a decade ago\, while completing his masters degree in cello at UW-Madison\, Eric began to seriously play the viola da gamba during his spare time\, perhaps to the neglect of his cello studies. Cobbling together advice from touring professionals\, putting in hours of late night sessions\, and taking long drives for single lessons with eminent players\, Eric has worked steadily to deepen his knowledge of the instrument. He is on a mission to bring the warmth and ethereal beauty of this instrument and its repertoire to others in both intimate and large spaces. \nEric will present an evening of solo music for the viola da gamba and baroque cello. The night will include solo cello suites of Bach\, the recently unearthed solo Fantasias of Telemann\, and other less known but equally beautiful works from the 17th and 18th centuries written for the viola da gamba from France\, Spain\, Germany\, and the Netherlands. \nEric believes in the power of music to transform and ground oneself\, to communicate and pass on cultural heritage\, and to contribute to building entirely new ways of thinking and being on this planet with one another.\nIn addition to solo performances around Wisconsin\, Eric is a member of the Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble and has played cello with Satchel Paige and Katie Burns. Eric directs and founded the Madison Youth Viol Consort\, teaches Suzuki cello lessons\, and has also taught in the Madison schools since 2009. Eric holds degrees in music from Northern Illinois University and UW-Madison. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:DANNY SCHMIDT/ SAM BAKER - SOLD OUT!!!
DESCRIPTION:A bunch of people called last minute today\, and the show is now SOLD OUT. \nIf you called to reserve and do not intend to come to the show\, please contact us to cancel your reservations. \nWe will open at 5:30. \nWhat a great double-bill!!! \nSAM BAKER will make his Carpe debut\, and DANNY SCHMIDT makes a welcome return after a long absence. \nNamed to the Chicago Tribune’s 50 Most Significant Songwriters in the Last 50 Years\, Austin\, TX-based singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt has amassed a cult following for his stunningly poetic\, poignant imagery. With lyrical depth drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen\, Townes Van Zandt\, and Dave Carter\, Danny is considered a preeminent writer\, an artist whose earthy poetry manages to somehow conjure magic from the mundane\, leading Sing Out Magazine to tag him as: “Perhaps the best new songwriter we’ve heard in the last 15 years.” \nPerforming solo almost exclusively\, armed with just his voice\, his acoustic guitar\, and his acute commentary\, Schmidt’s an authentic timeless troubadour\, one man sharing his truth in the form of songs\, unadorned and intimate. The understated effect can be startlingly powerful. As songwriter Jeffrey Foucault put it: “Everything about the man is gentle\, except for his capacity for insight\, which is crushing.” \nSam Baker‘s music and story have been shared by some of the most prestigious media outlets in the world-NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross\, Rolling Stone Magazine\, The Wall Street Journal\, and numerous others. He is a true artist in every way\, sharing amazing life experiences through music\, story\, and art. \nBaker’s story includes surviving devastating injuries from a terrorist bomb on a bus bound for Machu Picchu\, Peru in 1986. Most of the passengers were killed\, including the German family that he had befriended. His injuries required him to relearn how to walk\, move\, and speak. Many years and over 15 operations later\, Baker sees beauty in everything around him and expresses his new-found life every day\, sometimes with paint and canvas\, or a camera\, and sometimes with a guitar and song. \nBaker released his first record\, Mercy\, in 2004\, the first in a trilogy of song paintings with sparse instrumentation and poetic delivery. It was followed by Pretty World in 2007\, and Cotton in 2009. His 2013 release\, ‘say grace\,’ was named one of the Top Ten Country Albums of 2013 by Rolling Stone Magazine. His latest release\, Land of Doubt (June 2017) is well on its way to similar attention and praise. A recent review published nationwide by Scott Stroud of the Associated Press says that Land of Doubt is “utterly evocative…” \n“Life is a gift\,” Baker says. “Gratitude for what remains is more helpful than resentment for what was lost. Ultimately\, I came to understand that these days are wicked short and terribly beautiful. All I’ve got is this one breath\, and if I’m lucky\, I get another.” \n“With a sound both soaring and sad\, the Texas-based Baker sings in a raspy talk-whisper that makes you stop what you’re doing\, sit down and listen.”—Scott Stroud\, The Associated Press \n“In some ways\, more a poet than a musician\, Baker paints vivid pictures with often simple phrases. Baker somehow simultaneously sounds both tough as nails and fragile as glass…” Peter Blackstock\, The Austin American Statesman… \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

He will be sharing the night with STEPHEN  SEIFERT\, the #1 mountain dulcimer player. Rick is a popular teacher on the festival circuit and travels across the country playing solo and teaching at music festvals. SUMMARY:BILL MILLER
DESCRIPTION:BILL MILLER is an award-winning Native American recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, painter\, and world-class accomplished flute player. Over the entirety\, Miller has produced over a dozen albums\, received three Grammy Awards\, numerous NAMA awards (including a “Lifetime Achievement Award) and led Wisconsin’s La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. He is now touring in support of a recent collaboration album Look Again To The Wind: Johnny Cash’s Bitter Tears Revisited where Bill has the title track. \nA Mohican Indian from northern Wisconsin\, Bill Miller has long been one of the most admired figures in the Native American music arena and beyond. As an award-winning recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, and painter\, he’s been a voice for the voiceless\, a link between two great and clashing civilizations. \nWith his new album\, Chronicles of Hope\, Bill hopes to further inspire fans\, both present and future. “My faith in my Creator leaves me content with the gifts I have\,” he says\, “and I use them to enrich the world through His blessings. I choose to bless people rather than curse them\, to be a peacemaker rather than a warmaker.” As songs like “The Promise” make clear\, Bill feels just as passionate about saving the environment of North America\, the land of his forebears. ” I think we should feel as if we’re living in the Garden of Eden\, and we should take care of the land\,” he says emphatically. “I’ll always use my music to urge people to preserve the land.” \nBill has an equally active career as a painter. His work has been shown and sold in prestigious galleries around the country\, and he maintains a studio at his Nashville home\, where he lives with his wife and children. With so busy a personal and professional life\, it would seem that Bill Miller could cruise ever onward in easy contentment. But artists don’t work that way. “I’ve been given a lot of second chances in my life\,” he says. “I’ve been through alcoholism and other problems. I was lifted out of the ditch\, and I still see a blue sky above. After years of living against the grain\, I see things as rivers\, creeks and rainstorms\, as the liquid layers of my life.” \nBill is really excited about a brand new ROY ORBISON project.  Roy’s sons want him to do a record honoring their father\, interpreting some of Roy’s songs and doing some of his own songs inspired by Roy. \nBill’s heart is now beating well- at 95% and on its way up after heart failure last April.  That kept him off the road for awhile and he is glad to be back at work. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

Since its April release ’Drylands’ has spent 32 weeks in the IMNZ album charts\, peaking at No.2. \nParsons is a two-time NZ Music Award (VNZMA) finalist for Folk Album of the Year; Winner of the 2016 NZCMA Country Song of the Year; Winner of the 2016 MMF award for Best Independent Tour; A finalist for the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll award in 2015; and ‘Drylands’ won the NZ Music Award in technical category for Best Engineer (Lee Prebble\, Oliver Harmer). \nWith a wide breadth of material\, Parsons has a dynamic songwriting range: from the gutsy & rhythmic hand-clappers like audience favourite ‘Far Away’\, through to pin-drop ballads like ‘Don’t Wait’\, featuring Canadian songwriting royalty Ron Sexsmith. \nWith a dynamite live show – solo\, or with her dynamic band\, Parsons is an engaging performer with a natural emotive voice that allows the listener to become part of the story. SUMMARY:JOHN STANO/ KAIA FOWLER
DESCRIPTION:With soaring vocals and accomplished guitar work\, KAIA shares songs that explore life’s struggles and joys\, drawing on folk\, blues\, roots\, and rock traditions. Inspired by nature and the human condition\, Kaia’s songs resonate with strength and vulnerability as she explores a vast emotional landscape. With over 20 years as a performing singer-songwriter\, Kaia draws from a large repertoire of original material and select cover songs by artists such as John Prine\, Carole King\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Stevie Nicks. \nKaia’s songwriting has been compared to Joni Mitchell’s for its lyrical poetry\, rich melodies and engaging chord progressions. She placed as a finalist for the 2012 Great River Folk Festival songwriters contest. Two songs from her 2010 album Seams of My Heart received radio play on Woman of Substance Radio. The Americana Gazette album review had this to say about Kaia’s songwriting: “Each song is very well written\, with a true authenticity of life. You can picture yourself or someone you know in each story line.” It continues\, “Fowler is a tremendous lyricist. Her lyrics paint pictures and her musical notes add the color…” (Aug.-Sept. 2010 issue). Kaia’s latest album\, released October 2015\, is an EP titled All The Way\, dedicated to the memory of her husband Scott R. Jaeger who died of pancreatic cancer in 2013. A portion of the proceeds from sales of All The Way benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. She is currently working on her third studio album. \nSee videos of Kaia’s recent performance at a house concert and listen to samples from her albums at her website. \nJOHN STANO is an award winning singer songwriter and performer of Americana\, Blues\, Folk and Contemporary Acoustic music. The trademark of his sound is a distinctive blend of acoustic and slide guitar\, harmonica and expressive vocals\, developed over many years of performance and study. He sometimes adds a little mandolin\, cigar box guitar or banjo to the mix as well. His style could be described as acoustic folk-blues or Americana. \nInitially self-taught\, John went on to study American fingerstyle guitar at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and harmonica with national blues legend\, Jim Liban. ‘Sing Out’ compared John’s music to early Bob Dylan while ‘Dirty Linen’ was reminded of Country Joe McDonald. John studied English and creative writing at U.W. Madison. A skillful use of language adds an original spark to his lyrics. Besides his own songs\, John also performs his own arrangements of urban and country blues classics\, instrumentals and contemporary songs\, covering music by artists such as; John Prine\, Bob Dylan\, Greg Brown\, Little Walter\, Robert Johnson\, Mississippi John Hurt\, John Fahey\, Gillian Welch\, Leo Kottke and Tom Waits. \nJohn is a flexible and engaging performer who works regularly at a variety of indoor and outdoor venues. He also teaches guitar\, harmonica\, banjo and other acoustic instruments privately and has received numerous arts grants to present blues history\, harmonica performance\, ukulele and song writing classes in the Milwaukee public schools and private institutions such as Mount Mary College and Waukesha County Technical College. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:MARIE MILLER w/ John Hollier
DESCRIPTION:“Miller’s sound meshes her singer-songwriter background with poppy country vibes — almost like a combination of Shania Twain and Sara Bareilles.” – Billboard.com \nWhen MARIE MILLER writes a song\, she does what all gifted writers do: She looks at her life and into her heart to make sure what she creates comes from real emotion and experience. \nShe also does something none of peers likely do: she searches through classic literature\, whether it be Dostoyevsky\, Tolstoy or Homer. There\, she finds parallels for what she wants to say\, channels that inspiration into her lyrics and comes up with something unique: Music that’s immediate and timeless\, driven by feelings all listeners can relate to yet infused with a perspective that transcends the present. \n“I have a song called ‘Story’ on my new album\,” she explains\, referencing Letterbox\, scheduled for release in the spring of 2017 on Curb Records. “It brings in a lot of epic characters: Heathcliff and Catherine from Wuthering Heights\, Hector’s wife Andromache from The Iliad. I’ve always loved epic stories — Anna Karenina\, The Brothers Karamazov\, Crime and Punishment — because they’re filled with relationships that are super serious and dramatic. Sometimes I feel like I’m right there in the midst of them.” \nYet Letterbox is no droning lecture on literature. It’s a celebration of freedom. Miller has paid plenty of dues to get to the point where she feels she can write what she wants how she wants to\, and sing without constraint. Still young\, she has survived years in the music business. She impacted initially with the infectious\, “You’re Not Alone.” More than 115\,000 downloaded that single on Amazon. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars featured her second single\, “6’2\,” in 2014. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:DAVE RAMONT
DESCRIPTION:“Differentiating oneself in the burgeoning field of alternative country artists is a tricky proposition these days\, but Dave Ramont stands tall in the crowd.” –Performing Songwriter magazine \nDAVID ALAN RAMONT  was born with a song stuck in his head. The doctors couldn’t get it out. 20 years later he was playing clubs around the Chicago area\, whether alone or with bandmates. He also taught at a music school\, played in foul smelling theatre pits\, did occasional session work and dug plenty of ditches. He made a record and relocated to the thriving Austin\, TX music scene for a spell. Back in Illinois he made 3 more records and dug more ditches. Gigging expanded- Midwest\, East\, South. College/public radio played his songs. \nHe borrowed a banjo and co-founded swillbilly band dick smith. They made 3 records and found a hardcore little following. Their record “Smoke Damage” was one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s top 3 indy releases of 2002. Ramont produced records for 3 other singer/songwriters. Currently he’s playing (sometimes for sandwiches)\, writing songs and kicking stuff down the street…and still digging the occasional ditch. \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.

SUMMARY:PHIL LEE
DESCRIPTION:PHIL LEE \n“All this while keeping true to his unique and singular mission; to write songs that try to make sense out of this world\, open some eyes\, call out some fools and ring out some hard truths. Yet\, admirable as such pursuits may be he’s simply being true to who he is. Phil Lee’s music will make you think and laugh and maybe shed a tear or two but it also provides hours of playtime fun because all of those things are part of the package. He couldn’t do it any other way.\nPhil is a hipster madman Huck Finn meets Jack Kerouac.” Rick Allen \n“Along with working with the Flying Burrito Brothers\, driving a truck for Neil Young and playing drums for decades\, Lee has carved a unique niche for himself in the alt-country\, acoustic post-modern honky tonk world. Fans of Steve Forbert\, Townes Van Zandt\, Gram Parsons\, Guy Clark\, Phil Cody and Greg Brown will dig Lee’s strong fourth album.” Jeff Schwachter / Atlantic City Weekly \n“….pure Phil Lee…Witty\, wicked\, compassionate\, profane\, misanthropic…Phil Lee and his friends wear their supreme musicianship lightly and this album is a street ahead of most things you’ll hear this year; it has a joie-de-vivre that no amount of jokily bitter lines can disguise.”  John Davy / Flyinshoes Review \nPlease call 920-563-9391 to reserve.
