SUMMARY:RICHARD PAUL THOMAS/ BILL CAMPLIN
DESCRIPTION:Song swaps throw performers together to rotate\, doing a song each before tossing the hot potato to the next person.  Always fun and interesting.  We would have been happy to have DOROTHY and RICHARD PAUL  back  with  not so lonesome BILL CAMPLIN\, EXCEPT that now DOROTHY cannot make it. \nRichard Paul (his friends call him RpT) is a free-thinking dreamer and Texas-based songwriter with decades of love\, life and laughter to share.  His songwriting spans a wide range of musical genres and emotional experiences ranging from light hearted fun to challenging one’s convictions about life and our place in the world.  His writing and performance style encompasses elements of R&B\, jazz\, ballads and good old rock n’ roll.  RpT’s soulful voice ranges from thermal to edgy reflecting the musical influences of a lifetime.  His thought-provoking lyrics speak to the heart and soul of the listener while thoroughly entertaining his audiences. \nWe were looking forward to hearing  Dorothy Scott  again\, but\, alas\, she cannot make it. \nBill Camplin has a record as long as your arm\, not taking into account that a lot of arms are different lengths.  Well known as a singer/songwriter and acoustic guitarist\, he was an integral part of the Milwaukee acoustic folk scene for many years and is also proprietor (along with Kitty Welch) of the World Famous Café Carpe in Fort Atkinson\, Wisconsin.  Folksy bluesy jazzy countryy- the guy applies his chops to all those genres. \n  \n

SUMMARY:THE WRONG OMAR
DESCRIPTION:Joey Shaheen aka: “The Wrong Omar” is a Minneapolis based singer/songwriter doing a warm blend of roots/folk/rock with blues and  jazz harp\, storytelling\, and a little quirk. He has been touring the US and Canada\, singing his “sidewalk confessionals of bad choices” with a tongue-in-cheek curmudgeon persona for old souls of all ages. \nHis solo acoustic show follows a string of radio and TV performances throughout the Southeast and Mid-West. Soulful work on the piano leads to a set of guitar/harp and foot tambo songs that can be best described as: “crying tears of joy while making love”.  You might also laugh yourself silly with some of his stories. Be warned: you may walk away with these tunes stuck in your head\, and you will be encouraged to sing along at times too.

SUMMARY:HARPETH RISING
DESCRIPTION:This Nashville trio fuses folk\, “newgrass\,” rock\, and classical into an organically unique sound\, showcasing expansive three-part harmonies\, consummate musicianship\, and astute\, soulful lyrics. \nHarpeth Rising chose to name themselves after a river because water is both dynamic and powerful. These words also describe the music created by the three women – Jordana Greenberg (violin\, vocals)\, Rebecca Reed-Lunn (banjo\, vocals) and Maria Di Meglio (cello\, vocals). \n“We don’t set out to create something different\, we just write in a way that is true to ourselves while trying to always expand and explore the new influences in our lives.” says Greenberg. “We’re aware of genre divisions\, we’re just not bound by them.” \nHarpeth Rising’s roots run deep – from their varied ancestry across Eastern Europe to the musical hotbed of the Mid-South they now call home\, they weave together ancient and modern ideas\, expressing themselves through the common thread of all peoples: Folk Music. \nBorn from the desire to write and create original music\, Harpeth Rising began on a cross-country road trip. After spending a summer jamming at campsites and attending bluegrass festivals\, Jordana Greenberg (violin) and Rebecca Reed-Lunn (banjo) decided to keep the adventure alive. They started writing songs and playing out 4 to 5 nights a week\, developing their sound and honing their chops. But it was with the addition of Maria Di Meglio (cello) that Harpeth Rising truly found its sound. Despite the presence of only three string instruments on stage\, the three women produce a profusion of sound generally created by a much larger ensemble. Di Meglio transitions fluidly between providing the bass line and taking the melodic lead\, while Reed-Lunn’s highly original style of claw hammer banjo–learned mainly by watching YouTube–is both surprisingly lyrical and intensely driving. Greenberg takes on the role of concert violinist and accompanist with equal facility\, and ensures that a lead guitar is never missed. \nTheir live performances are high-energy kinetic events in which both their abilities and their passion for performance are obvious. Harpeth Rising can create a listening room from a rowdy bar crowd\, and can inspire even the weariest of audiences. After only a few months as a band\, they embarked on a self-booked tour of England\, which included a performance with The Bath Philharmonia. They were invited to perform at The Cambridge Folk Festival the following summer\, and have since played folk festivals across England and the United States. Building their fan base in the tradition of all wandering minstrels – passionately and by word-of-mouth – they now perform to sold-out audiences internationally. They have released four albums in as many years – Harpeth Rising (2010)\, Dead Man’s Hand (2011)\, The End of the World (2012)\, a collaboration with master wordsmith David Greenberg\, father of Jordana\, and their brand new project\, Tales From Jackson Bridge\, which released October 1\, 2013. \nRemember to reserve. \n

SUMMARY:TIM FAST
DESCRIPTION:TIM FAST could be a character in one of the gems-of-a-song he writes and sings. He’s a dust-covered man who has traveled the roads in search of whatever song is over the next rise. That sense of adventure has given him a catalog of great original songs that have touched audiences from coast to coast and all the way from his native Minnesota down to the Texas Gulf Coast. \n“I know how to write a good song and know when it works but in the end\, the audience lets me know\,” Tim says as his hands cradle a cup of coffee. A line like that might sound boastful coming from most people\, but Tim is too disarming to come off that way. The proof that he has arrived as a touring musician comes in his 150-plus bookings a year and the fact celebrated songwriters like Cliff Eberhardt and James Keelaghan are big fans. Keelaghan said that besides being an “excellent songwriter\,” Tim has “the sweetest voice I’ve heard in a long time.” High praise indeed. \nTim taught himself to play guitar at a young age (he still doesn’t read music) and his first guitar was a Silvertone his parents bought him after he tried building his own guitar after seeing the Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show” when he was 8. He counts the late Chicago singer-songwriter Steve Goodman as one of his biggest early influences. After seeing Goodman perform in Minneapolis in 1975\, Tim decided\, “That’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life.” From then on\, his life was about music. \nIn pursuit of that dream\, he traveled roads that gave him a breadth of experience and would serve him well when he decided to become a full-time troubadour. He bussed tables\, worked crab boats out of Dutch Harbor\, Alaska\, fabricated sheet metal\, inspected produce for the California Department of Food and Agriculture and worked as a stonemason. Woody Guthrie once advised\, “All you can write is what you see\,” and Tim let the characters he met and the roads he ambled tell the stories in his songs. “Many of my songs are about life’s experiences because the best songs come from what you know best\,” he said. He’s told those stories on three well-received albums — the self-titled Tim Fast in 2003\, followed by Starlite Drive-In in 2007 and his latest\, Crooked Door\, released in 2011. \nTim’s talent has been recognized by his peers. He’s studied with some of the greats of contemporary acoustic music\, including David Wilcox\, fellow Minnesotan Pat Donahue\, Kathy Mattea\, Johnsmith and Ellis Paul\, to name a few. Cliff Eberhardt was so impressed with Tim that he asked him to tour with him as his opening act. Eberhardt saw what audiences have long seen: that Tim has a dazzling repertoire of original songs that leave people humming and thinking — and ready to join him on his journey to see what’s over the next rise. \nPlease call to reserve. \n

SUMMARY:MIKE DOWLING
DESCRIPTION:MIKE DOWLING– bottleneck blues\, vintage swing\, ragtime\, and more\, played with grace\, wit and dazzling dexterity \nMike doesn’t come through that often\, so don’t miss the opportunity to hear this world-class guitarist. \n“Dowling is one of the most relaxed and highly skilled acoustic guitar players of his generation that I have ever heard. Everything he performs appears natural and deceptively effortless\, and with a tone\, particularly when he plays slide guitar that is very much his own and that very few others can emulate. His vocals have an engaging edge and alongside his consummate guitar skills there was nothing to criticize. After a number of encores a member of the audience spontaneously stood up and gave a heartfelt thanks to Mike for such a wonderful evening.”\nOctober 2003 performance review\,  Blues in Britain. \nMike will be promoting his new CD\, though it is not yet available.

SUMMARY:SAM LLANAS
DESCRIPTION:Sam will be playing solo this night. \nSam is a singer\, acoustic guitarist\, and songwriter in several rock and roots rock bands active from the 1980s to the 2000s\, including the BoDeans and Absinthe. Sam is known for his distinctive voice\, the voice by which many identify the Bodeans. \nLlanas was one of the founding members of the roots rock band the BoDeans\, which he formed with high school friend Kurt Neumann in Waukesha\, Wisconsin. In 1985\, after adding Guy Hoffman (drums) in 1984 and Bob Griffin (bass)\, the quartet signed a contract with Slash/Warner Records and shortened their name to the BoDeans. \nUnder the guidance of producer T-Bone Burnett\, they entered Hollywood’s Sunset Sound Factory in October to record their first album. The critically-acclaimed debut Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams was released in 1986. In the late 1980s and early 1990s\, the band had several singles in the top 40 “mainstream rock” charts. In the mid-1990s\, the band had two top 10 songs in the “Adult contemporary” charts. \nThe BoDeans took some time off in the late 1990s so Neumann and Llanas could record solo albums. Llanas founded Absinthe\, with the help of Milwaukee musicians Jim Eannelli (guitars and bass) and Guy Hoffman (formerly of Oil Tasters and Violent Femmes\, currently of Radio Romeo). They have released one album\, 1998′s A Good Day To Die. In 2011 Sam Llanas released 4 A.M. (The Way Home) and left the BoDeans to pursue his solo career. \nIn 2012 the music from 1998‘s A Good Day To Die was incorporated into a collaboration with playwright Doug Vincent and producer Gary Tanin in the production “A Day for Grace.”   Reviewer DeLarue of Lucid Culture : “As the show’s segments shift\, Sam Llanas\, frontman for the popular Wisconsin roots rockers the BoDeans does his part as Greek chorus with his acoustic guitar and warm baritone voice\, singing excerpts from songs including the BoDeans’ brooding classic ‘Far\, Far Away From My Heart’ as well as several numbers from his 1998 cult classic CD\, ‘A Good Day to Die\,’ by the short-lived side project Absinthe which clocked in at #629 on the 1000 Best Albums Of All Time List here at LucidCulture.  The pieces from that song cycle used in the show have had their lyrics tweaked to fit the new context\, and add considerable depth and gravitas to the overall ambience.”   \n \n2013 the play had evolved to include multi-city tours and multi-week runs in New York City. \nOn November 18th\, 2014 Llanas is set to release The Whole Night Thru an all new studio record produced by longtime collaborator Gary Tanin. It features 9 new Llanas originals. The Whole Night Thru is Llanas’ first studio outing after parting ways with the band he co-fronted for over a quarter century. Shedding new light on a multi-decade career Sam returns to his roots adding a refined rock sound complimented by a full band\, all veterans of both studio and live performance. Behind his lone-wolf image and tuffness\, Llanas continues to hone his skills. A master craftsman that feels most at home in the city he’s always called home\, Llanas has set the stage for fans to embrace his new identity. \nRemember to call to reserve seats.

SUMMARY:SARAH MCQUAID
DESCRIPTION:Rising star SARAH MCQUAID’s voice has been likened to malt whiskey\, melted chocolate and “honey poured into wine” (Minor 7th). A captivating performer\, she seduces her audience with cheeky banter and stories from the road\, as well as with stunning musicianship; in her hands\, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying instrument. \nHer musical output reflects her own eclectic background: Sarah was born in Spain\, raised in Chicago\, holds dual US and Irish citizenship\, and now lives in rural England. Refusing to be pigeonholed\, she spans the genres with both her beautifully crafted originals and her interpretations of material from around the globe and down the centuries. \nSarah’s third solo album The Plum Tree and the Rose has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: “Impeccable\,” wrote fRoots (UK)\, while Midwest Record (USA) called it “low key but glorious and incendiary” and Hot Press (Ireland) said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs.” \n“Likely to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.” — Aled Jones\, BBC Radio 2 \n“A world class talent … burns with a brilliant allure.” — Living Tradition \nPlease call to reserve. \nwww.sarahmcquaid.com    www.facebook.com/sarahmcquaidmusic   www.twitter.com/sarahmcquaid

SUMMARY:PETER MULVEY/Brianna Lane
DESCRIPTION:PETER MULVEY will play hop off his bicycle long enough to command our stage for a few hours. Brianna* will have to hop off first to perform the opening set. \nPeter has a newish (no\, he is not newish) record- not bicycling record\, but the recording kind of record- Silver Ladder\, produced by the Prophet named Chuck. \n“The eclectic range of Mulvey’s tireless past pays handsome dividends on this stylistically sweeping\, LA-recorded album. A crack specially convened band (including regular Dylan drummer David Kemper) adhere to his well-established live and direct recording approach and allow the performer’s deeply matured\, naturally wry and hard-edged Americana to attain full\, flowing life. – Gavin Martin\, Uncut \nTireless past- that refers to the time before he had a bicycle. \nFor this gig\, his hair will also be stylistically swept.  DO NOT MISS IT. \n*Brianna Lane is a gifted singer/songwriter in true Americana form. She writes and performs on an acoustic guitar as well as a banjo\, crafting songs that are clear-eyed and pure—with an integrity derived from her gritty\, unflinching emotional honesty. \n  \n

SUMMARY:BILL CAMPLIN & TRICIA ALEXANDER w/ ALPHA STEWART
DESCRIPTION:Through some nature of mixup\, Tricia did not make it to the song swap we thought she was in on a few weeks ago.  But she is delighted to join Bill and percussionist Alpha Stewart on this evening.  Tricia brought Alpha into our lives a few years ago.  It will be a joyous evening of music\, despite some of Bill’s more depressing tunes. \nTRICIA ALEXANDER– Joy-filled\, uplifting and inspiring are some of the words used to describe Tricia Alexander’s music and performance – which ranges from soothing and deeply spiritual to social commentary and humor. \nSinger\, songwriter\, performance poet\, accomplished guitarist\, percussionist and harmonica player\, Tricia moves between jazz\, blues and folk\, spoken word and music\, original compositions and re-interpreted cover tunes – and she does it all with seamless grace. \nTricia has been known for many years as “one of Chicago’s finest folk performers – always a little on the jazzy side” (Chicago Sun Times). Her original blues\, jazz and folk music ranges from soothing and deeply spiritual to social commentary – and from lightly romantic to slightly bawdy. Humanities Iowa calls her\, “A modern-day Aesop” – and the Folk Music Source Book places her “intelligent contemporary writing” in the same league as: Holly Near\, Cheryl Wheeler\, Anne Hills and Christine Lavin. \nVibrant\, uplifting and healing with a voice\, lyrics and music that resonate the heart. SUMMARY:JOSH HARTY & JOHN STATZ/ Camela Widad opens
DESCRIPTION:Should be a  grand evening with 2 once Madison-based songwriters bringing it all back home.  As always\, please call to reserve. \nJOHN STATZ  will be bringing you some rootsy folk-rock.  His yet-to-be-released newest record is produced by JEFFREY FOUCAULT. \n“The singer-songwriter’s unquenchable wanderlust has taken him from Colorado to\nWisconsin to West Virginia to Hungary\, and during his travels\, he wrote Ghost Towns\, a\nfull-length dripping with folk-rock immediacy and the kind of grit that cooled heels never\ngather.”  – Jason Heller\, Westword – Denver\, CO \n“…a collection of beautiful songs…” “…music fireworks…” – Johan Schoenmakers\, AltCountryForum – Netherlands \n“…a very fine album from the first note to the last word.”- One Chord To Another (Finland) \n“… a poignant album about the desolation and decay that like the bullet holes featured in\nthe cover art\, riddle the modern world.”  – Record Dept. Music Reviews – Oregon \n“…a hard-chugging roots-rock record in the tradition of Neil Young and Tom Petty…” – Shepherd Express (Milwaukee) \n“…dense arrangements and ramshackle jalopies like “Disclaimer” make riding through a\ndemilitarized zone in an old junker sound surprisingly comforting.”  – The Onion – Madison\, WI \n“Ghost Towns makes it clear that Statz takes his art seriously. The album is a collection of\nrootsy folk-rock that travels through places\, time and emotions.”  – Rich Albertoni\, The Isthmus – Madison\, WI \n“…this release achieves a perfect balance between those upbeat folk-rock gems and the\nsubdued singer-songwriter tracks. It’s great to hear John’s music fleshed out with a full\nband.”- Travis Wood\, 5 Score Pachyderm – St. Louis\, MO \nTouring across continents\, JOSH HARTY ‘s unique blend of American music has become a must-hear for those who keep the tradition of country\, blues and folk close to their hearts. Born and raised on the plains of North Dakota\, Josh has continued the old family tradition of playing guitar. His father\, both a preacher\, and the Police Chief of their small town\, was also Harty’s music mentor. \n“An honest voice and fingers that seem to catch fire!” -Atlanta Music Guide \n“There is a dignity to this music making that leaves us feeling enriched for the experience. . . “\n-No Depression \nIn the past decade Josh has put out three critically acclaimed albums\, while touring continuously across Europe and North America\, and shows no signs of slowing down. More than just moving along\, he’s spending plenty of time in the communities along the way\, from Brooklyn to Haarlem\, from London to Portland. Josh is always looking for that balance between the rolling road and the people who inspire him\, trading stories around kitchen tables and theatre stages. Harty’s live shows prove that good story telling combined with journeyman musicianship is as American as music gets. \nCamela Widad opens. \n  \n

SUMMARY:PIPER ROAD
DESCRIPTION:PIPER ROAD \nLast year Piper Road celebrated its 40th year of busting the borders of bluegrass with the release of its new CD – “Piper Road: 40”. Piper Road is: \nRandal Harrison – Fiddle \nBob Mason – Mandolin \nMark Hembree (former “Bluegrass Boy” with Bill Monroe)- upright bass \nBarry Riese — Guitar – Vocals \nBill Kangaroo — Washboard \nThe band was born into the age of rock & roll with individual backgrounds diverse as classical\, cowboy\, folk\, blues and Dixieland. Influenced by some live performances of Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band release of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” in the early 1970’s\, they put away the electric amps and guitars and developed a unique acoustic/bluegrass style. They never completely abandoned their musical roots and have blended Irish fiddle tunes with American country\, big band\, novelty and space-aged Grateful Dead inspired jams. \nPlease call to reserve seats.

SUMMARY:TONY FURTADO
DESCRIPTION:Tony Furtado is an indie record label’s dream artist. He has lived primarily on the road for the last two decades. He is gregarious\, engaging and entertaining\, on and off stage. He’s been called a genius on banjo and slide guitar and his own creative interpretation- hybrid of Americana and indie rock is captivating. Onstage\, whether playing with a band or solo\, he owns the room\, mixing stories of his travels with musicianship that is off the charts. \nAbout “Live From Mississippi Studios”: On Nov 25\, 2011\, Tony and his band -some of Portland’s finest young musicians\, played 2 exciting sets to a packed house at one of Portland’s guiding light venues for indie rock\, Americana\, and folk music\, Mississippi Studios. The show was recorded and mixed by Rob Stroup (8-Ball Studios) and filmed by a new collective of young filmmakers called Devious Goldfish. The whole project was funded by an interactive Kickstarter campaign where Tony offered up concerts\, CD’s and even some of his sculpture-work as incentives for pledges. Feeding off the thread of energy from the crowd\, the performance was riveting and sincere\, and the filmmakers captured that on-stage intimacy and raw emotion rarely accessible to the audience. The result is a stunning CD/DVD set\, a follow-up to Tony’s 2011 release\, “Golden” ( which remained on the Americana top 40 chart for months). \n“I think some of my best recordings have actually been captured by bootleggers recording my band live\, because in that moment\, I’m just not thinking about it. All my energy is focused on the love of playing music and rolling with the moment. It’s a give and take from the audience to the stage\, and back. And the music that is created is something that otherwise might not occur without that flow.” -Tony Furtado

SUMMARY:RUSTY BELLE/ HAYWARD WILLIAMS
DESCRIPTION:Teaming up with local Wisconsinite  HAYWARD WILLIAMS\, New England’s RUSTY BELLE makes its debut at the Carpe.  Drummer Zach made great contributions on Bill Camplin’s “Old Bones” record. \nRUSTY BELLE’S   “Common Courtesy” has received some great early press: \n“Rusty Belle’s songs include a magnificent fusion of genres from country to rock and blues to 80s pop\, creating a smoothie of liquid gold…”  (Culture Fly\, UK ) \n“A group like Rusty Belle is difficult to pigeonhole. The band’s “roots-rock/junk-folk”—equal parts homespun country\, wistful folk\, and sweaty garage punk—wastes no time stripping a song down to its bare-naked bones. For “Change My Heart\,” the result is a muted\, feverish rocker with country-ish phrasing and delicate\, soulful harmonies. Oh\, and the song’s video\, which opens with a painfully awkward date and ends with a costume/dance party\, is nothing short of delightful. ”  (UTNE Reader) \n“The mixing of genres\, the interplay between the band members\, and their versatile musicianship has given Rusty Belle a unique sound\, and with the even more unique tact of not worrying about fitting into a particular place musically for marketing purposes keeps each album fresh and keeps them evolving.” (The New York Examiner) \n“I can’t stop listening to it.  Each time through I say\, okay\, that’s my favorite song … and then next time I say it for a completely different-sounding song … and the next time for yet another.  Etc.  This is a very strong recording.”  (Vin Scelsa\, Sirius XM Radio) \n“Never judge a book by its cover appears to be the maxim of the day. He may look fresh but Hayward Williams sounds like a moody delta blues grunge sharpshooter with strong overtones of ‘Streets of Philadelphia’ era Springsteen mixed with classic Dire Straits. \n\nWith Haymaker\, Williams and producer/band member Daniel McMahon pay homage to the humid levies of the Deep South. It’s a remarkably atmospheric album\, spacial yet cloying\, full of joy and misery and all the other contradictions that go hand in hand with the mysteries of Dixieland. Having emerged from Wisconsin clutching his garage sale Gibson ’64 in the early noughties he has gone from strength to strength\, making one EP\, four albums and many more fans. He cut his teeth on the dive bars of the USA and Europe and is currently cracking Australia. This is an artful mix of acoustic and electric blues rock and you soon realise that it comes from the dark places in his soul.”-  Americana UK

SUMMARY:STRANGLED DARLINGS
DESCRIPTION:Thoughtful indie folk music (Americana doom pop) by people young\, hungry & in the area so why not come give them a listen? \nSTRANGLED DARLINGS brings a punk intensity to their live show. Taking a cello and making it a hip hop bass. Taking mandolin and slapping it like a stubborn mule. The Portland-based duo has been creating original tunes since 2009 and breaking the mold for what hipsters consider indie music. They bring a lyrical intelligence and political punch to songs that otherwise might have just been another break up song. Their song material focuses more on witchcraft in the Civil War\, the morality of Somali piracy and the curse of Anna Nicole Smith’s breast implants. The band has released three studio albums and a fourth is due out this fall. Their live show mixes technical mastery with deadpan humor and a little something to shake your rumpus. \nStrangled Darlings are on an extended US tour to support their upcoming 2014 release  of “Boom Stomp King”. The album focuses solely on the duo sound; the current touring set-up. Boom Stomp King is a record about objects\, shelter\, the ephemeral nature of your history. \nStrangled Darlings are George Veech on vocals\, mandolin\, harmonica and Jessica Anderly on vocals\, cello/bass. \n\n\nThe band’s name derives from a William Faulkner quote about editing your creative process without sentiment. \n[the] music can feel organic and untethered\, but these numbers\, perhaps appropriately\, have the handcrafted aspect of American quilts — colorful\, stitched-to-each-other artifacts pieced together using the fabrics of dozens of other\, older garments. This allows for a richness in texture\, a sense of history and a sort of comfortable resonance with the past. Staccato circus-carny rap songs follow sweeping gypsy waltzes with Tom Waits edginess and the gangling grace of a Decemberists narrative.  — Sleeping Hedgehog\, March 2011 \n Seemingly unrelated genres converge into a dark and twangy mix of twisted freak folk\, Romany melodies\, Cab Calloway saunter\, Tom Waits murder ballads and everything in between\, all hammered out on a mix of traditional and modern instruments.  —Williamette Week March 2011

SUMMARY:BILL STAINES
DESCRIPTION:Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. \nSinging mostly his own songs\, he has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today\, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65\,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances and one reviewer wrote\, “He has a sense of timing to match the best standup comic.” \nBill’s music is a slice of Americana\, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon\, the on-the-road truckers\, or the everyday workers that make up this land. \nMany of Bill’s songs have appeared in grade school music books\, church hymnals\, and scouting campfire songbooks; he is one of only a few songwriters to have eight songs published in the classic song collection\, Rise up Singing. Composer David Amram recently described Bill as “a modern day Stephen Foster…his songs will be around 100 years from now.” \nOver the decades\, you have heard Bill singing on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion\, HBO’s award winning series Deadwood\, and Public Radio’s Mountain Stage. Additionally\, his music has been used in a number of films including Off and Running\, with Cyndi Lauper\, and The Return of the Secaucus Seven\, John Sayles’ debut as a writer- director. \nIn 1975\, Bill won National Yodeling Championship in Kerrville Texas. Another important recognition was given to him in 2007. Presented by the Boston Area Coffeehouse Association\, The Jerry Christen Award recognized Bill’s contribution to New England folk music. \nCurrently\, Bill has recorded 26 albums; The Happy Wanderer and One More River were winners of the prestigious Parents’ Choice Award\, taking a gold medal and silver medal respectively. His songs have been recorded by many artists including Peter\, Paul\, and Mary\, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy\, The Highwaymen\, Mason Williams\, Grandpa Jones\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, Nanci Griffith\, Glen Yarborough and others. \n“Folk music is rich in the human spirit and experience. I’ve always wanted to bring something of value to people through my songs.” With these thoughts\, Bill continues to drive the highways and back roads of the country year after year\, bringing his music to listeners\, young and old. \n“Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody left off-carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.” – Nanci Griffith\n“Staines is one of the best songwriters in folk music today\, penning lyrics that evoke a sense of place and a generous spirit to go along with his pretty melodies. – Associated Press\n“Staines is one of folk music’s best songwriters and entertainers.” – Milwaukee Journal\n“There is no better writer of instantly memorable singalong choruses in this genre of music!” – The Boston Globe\n“His gentle lilting voice\, spacious melodies and common-chord lyrics give his songs a homespun grace that often belies his mastery of the folk form. He is such a pure pleasure too\, people forget to notice how damn good at the job of singer-songwritering he really is.” – New England Folk Almanac\n“Folk singer Bill Staines’ compositions recall the paintings of Grandma Moses – simple\, literal and evocative of a bucolic tranquility that modern times have almost erased.” – Hartford Courant
