SUMMARY:KIM RICHEY
DESCRIPTION:KIM RICHEY \n“[Kim Richey] would rule the charts in a land where Marshall Crenshaw was king\, Aimee Mann queen\, and the The Beatles never put out another record after Revolver.” Steve Horowitz\, popmatters.com \n“Richey entices you with sad and unembellished music that reveals an original spirit – and then she ensnares you for keeps by making you consider all the noiseless sensations that no songs can ever contain.” Timothy White\, Billboard Magazine \nThose artists who find themselves stuck in the deepest of ruts two decades into their careers could learn a thing or two from veteran singer-songwriter Kim Richey. She’s never been afraid to go where the inspiration is. \nTwo-time Grammy-nominated Kim is a storyteller; a weaver of emotions and a tugger of heartstrings. Tender\, poetic and aching with life’s truths\, Kim’s songs transport you to her world\, where words paint pictures and melodies touch the soul. And then there’s her voice. Pure\, arresting and honest\, it makes you take notice; Kim has the kind of voice where if emotions were ribbons\, they’d be streaming in rainbow colours from your iPod. \nEarly on\, the Zanesville\, Ohio native thrived on the progressive side of mainstream country\, her albums (1995’s Kim Richey\, 1997’s Bittersweet and 1999’s Glimmer\, all on Mercury) showcasing twang-pop sensibilities\, a rich\, rounded vocal tone and effortlessly sophisticated songwriting that other discerning performers – Radney Foster\, Trisha Yearwood and Pam Tillis to name a few – coveted for their own recordings. \nIn the years since\, Kim has made her subtly psychedelic album Rise (Lost Highway) in Los Angeles with producer Bill Bottrell\, flown to London to enlist the help of Giles Martin and emerging with the crisply orchestrated Chinese Boxes (Vanguard) and turned to her East Nashville-based bandleader and frequent co-writer Neilson Hubbard to conjure the earthy indie-pop feel of Wreck Your Wheels (Lojinx/Thirty Tigers) and to complete her latest masterpiece of smart\, sensual understatement Thorn In My Heart (Lojinx/Yep Roc). \nThe array of top-tier guests on the album include Jason Isbell\, Wilco’s Pat Sansone\, My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel\, Will Kimbrough and Yearwood\, who was\, for the first time\, returning the harmony-singing favor. And the dozen songs themselves show that Richey’s still dreaming up fetching melodies that arc and bend in unexpected ways\, and still discovering fresh angles from which to articulate matters of the heart. \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:PERRY BAIRD\, JEFF MASON\, and TOM COOK
DESCRIPTION:Fort Atkinson’s own Perry Baird\, Tom Cook (TC) and Jeff Mason will embark on their second performance together\, joined this time by Fort violinist Erica Flyte on a number of songs. Perry and Tom are officially retired from their former day jobs\, and Jeff is about half-way there. They are all getting a little long in the tooth and slow off the couch\, but their fingers are almost as nimble as ever. The boys will wind their way through traditional folk and fiddle tunes (this time with Erica actually providing fiddle) and whatever else they can remember. Perry and Jeff play guitar(s) and Perry does most of the singing. TC seems to be bringing a collection of (mostly) four and eight-stringed wooden instruments and will be making his second sojourn onto the Carpe stage\, with some tasty instrumentals promised. Quite honestly\, the whole thing is a work-in-progress and the old geezers are just as anxious as anyone else to hear what happens\, particularly with the addition of Erica’s sweet violin to the mix. \nThey’ll wind their way through a mix of contemporary and traditional folk\, pop\, and blues tunes\, plus a few novelties of highly suspect origin. \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:ANNE HILLS
DESCRIPTION:ANNE HILLS has become one of the better known voices of the contemporary folk music scene\, receiving awards and recognition for her live performances (2009 Bound for Glory live radio show favorite- Ithaca\, NY)\, her unique solo and collaborative recording projects (2001 WAMMIE for duet CD with Tom Paxton\, Under American Skies)\, and her overall artistry and benefit work (2002 Kate Wolf Award\, Carole Robertson Award & Kerrville Female Vocalist of the Year 1997). Her song “Follow That Road” was the title cut of the Martha’s Vineyard Songwriter Retreat and has enchanted audiences for over a decade. \nWhether she is singing her own song\, the words of 6 year old Opal Whiteley\, or the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley; accompanied with her guitar\, banjo\, or simply a Tibetan bell\, she puts her whole heart and soul into the moment. So\, even if you haven’t become familiar with her voice (featured often on XM/Sirius Folk Radio\, The Midnight Special & many other folk shows) you won’t want to miss a chance to witness in person her warm\, lively and humorous performance. \n“A stunning soprano tone has made Anne Hills one of contemporary music’s premiere vocalists … Her knack for writing heartfelt songs [has] brought her to the upper echelon of her craft.” -AllMusic Guide   \n“Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it’s understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me\, Anne’s writing\, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others\, is as direct\, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters.” -Tom Paxton   \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:COLIN O'BRIEN/ STELLANOVAS
DESCRIPTION:Colin is again sharing the evening with his talented friends the Stellanovas\,  Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines.  They pack a lot of music and fun into a performance. \nBanjo\, fiddle\, guitar\, footboard playin’ COLIN O’BRIEN‘s\, latest release\, “After a Song”\, was recorded in Nashville with some of music city’s best pickers: Larry Perkins\, Matt Combs\, Mark Howard and Dennis Crouch. Those boys were so enthralled with Colin they urged him to move there\, which he and his wife\, after a bit of consideration (1 or 2 minutes)\, did. \nIt was in the summer of 2011 that Nashville music legend Larry Perkins heard Colin’s set at the John Hartford Memorial Festival. Larry was side-struck. He immediately invited him down to Nashville make a record. The result\, After A Song\, features 12 of Colin’s originals and a band comprised of some of the late John Hartford’s band mates. \n“After A Song…Bottles the lighting that was John Hartford’s engagingly off-center songwriting” – Jon Weisberger\, The Nashville Scene. \nIn addition to his solo song and dance\, Mr. O’Brien performs withThe Nashville Stringy-Band\, an acoustic super-group featuring Matt Combs on fiddle\, Mike Compton on mandolin and Todd Phillips on bass. \nOriginally a jazz-guitar major at the University of WI-Stevens Point\, MARY GAINES truly found her musical voice studying jazz cello under the tutelage of the great Richard Davis (bass player with artists ranging from Sarah Vaughn to Van Morrison) at the UW-Madison. Mary is also known for her amazing voice–often compared to Bonnie Raitt but definitely her own. She (along with her husband\, Chris) has done extensive work as a session musician\, appearing on albums such as Smashing Pumpkin’s Gish\, several Freedy Johnston\, Willy Porter\, and Carrie Newcomer albums\, and scores of others. \nA founding member of Madison’s Harmonious Wail\, The Common Faces\, The Bob Westfall Quartet\, and The Moon Gypsies (the latter three co-founded with Mary Gaines)\, CHRIS WAGONER has had his foot in just about every musical circle in Madison. Classically trained as a violinist\, (he also plays ukulele\, hawaiian guitar\, accordion)\, he met Mary while attending the UW-Madison. Switching to an alternating diet of jazz and classical violin studies\, while playing in bands ranging from rock\, blues\, bluegrass\, and country\, to folk and jazz\, Chris has been an in-demand performer and session musician in the region for almost two decades. \nPlease call to reserve.

SUMMARY:ALBERT LEE BAND- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Show is SOLD OUT.   Click on Buy tickets if you want to put a note in the Discussion section there indicating that you would like some if anyone cannot use theirs.\n\n\n  \nKnown for his signature Ernie Ball guitar and lightning speed picking\, ALBERT LEE has not only worked with some of the biggest names in music but he has also maintained a solo career of his own.  Bill could not believe our good fortune (and yours) when he got the request for Albert to play our little room. Albert will be accompanied by his band\, J.T. Thomas on keyboards\, Will McGregor on bass\, and Jason Harrison Smith on drums. \n“ONE OF THE FINEST GUITAR PLAYERS WHO EVER WALKED THIS EARTH…”Vince Gill \nAlbert was born on December 21\, 1943 in Herefordshire\, England\, before moving and growing up in Blackheath\, London. He was first introduced to music with the piano\, taking lessons aged seven\, learning the classics and pop tunes before the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis inspired him to take up guitar. \nAlbert was treated one Christmas to a Hofner President acoustic arch-top\, and from there he never looked back. Spurred on by the recordings of Jimmy Bryant\, Buddy Holly and The Crickets\, Gene Vincent and The Everly Brothers\, Albert left school at sixteen and turned pro\, getting regular gigs at the 2 i’s Coffee Bar and The Flamingo Club in London – first with Bob Xavier’s band\, and then with The Jury. He replaced Jimmy Page in The Crusaders before joining Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds in ‘64. \n\n\n\n\n\nHe soon found his favoured guitar of choice\, the Fender Telecaster\, whilst everyone else was playing Gibson Les Pauls and Stratocasters. Albert admitted to feeling like the odd man out as his appreciation for American country artists grew\, and he formed the band Country Fever. He began working with Poet & The One Man Band\, who later turned into Heads\, Hands & Feet when Jerry Donahue and Pat Donaldson (of Country Fever) were replaced by Albert and Chas Hodges. Their self-titled debut album featured the original “Country Boy”\, now synonymous with Albert’s trademark picking style. \nThe U.S eventually beckoned\, and Albert began doing session work and briefly toured with The Crickets in 1973. He moved to Los Angeles\, where he met his idols Phil and Don Everly\, and Don invited Albert to play with him and pedal steel legend Buddy Emmons. After working on Don’s second album\, Albert left to join Joe Cocker’s band and was replaced by Lindsey Buckingham. \nAlbert’s reputation was growing as he moved to Encino\, and met his wife Karen whilst rehearsing up in Santa Barbara with Joe Cocker and his band before they went on the road. He contributed to Cocker’s “Sting Ray”\, and was then approached by A&M about putting together a solo album. \nAt a pivotal point in his career\, Albert was asked by Emmylou Harris to replace James Burton – one of his guitar heroes – who was leaving for Elvis Presley’s band. In 1976 he joined the Hot Band\, and his incredible guitar work came to the fore on the “Luxury Liner” LP. Albert released his first solo album “Hiding”\, produced by Brian Ahern\, which featured perhaps the definite version of “Country Boy” with Emmylou on backing vocals and Ricky Skaggs on fiddle. \nWhen he returned to London in 1978 for session recording\, Albert met Eric Clapton. He was invited to join his band and played on Clapton’s live album “Just One Night”\, which featured Albert on lead vocals for a cover of Mark Knopfler’s “Setting Me Up”. Albert would work with Eric for five years before he left and released his second solo album\, the self-titled “Albert Lee” in 1982. \nAlbert fulfilled his boyhood dream to play with the Everly Brothers in 1983 when he acted as guitarist and musical director for their reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Since then he would regularly tour with the Everlys on and off for 20 years. After two instrumental albums – “Speechless” (1986) and “Gagged But Not Bound” (1987) – steel player Gerry Hogan invited Albert to headline at a festival in Newbury\, England – fronting his own band for the very first time\, Hogan’s Heroes. \nAs Albert toured with Hogan’s Heroes through the late 80s\, he began his long association with Ernie Ball Music Man\, who would eventually (through many iterations) produce his signature guitar that he tours and records with today. In 2002 he would join Eric Clapton\, Tom Petty\, Paul McCartney and other music legends on stage at the Concert for George at the Royal Albert Hall. \nAlbert also received a Grammy Award in 2002 for his contribution to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” featured on “Earl Scruggs and Friends”. He appeared for the first time at Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2007\, now an annual appearance\, and has toured periodically for the last few years with ex-Stones bassist Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings\, performing with Georgie Fame. Joining his hero James Burton\, along with the likes of Vince Gill and John Jorgenson\, Albert won a Grammy for his performance on Brad Paisley’s instrumental “Cluster Pluck” in 2009. \nClick on Buy tickets to purchase tickets:

SUMMARY:LONESOME BILL CAMPLIN
DESCRIPTION:Bill was lonely\, so we added this show. \nComing off the high of a soldout show of the Occasional Quartet at the Stoughton Opera House\, he should be in good form. \nBill has been an integral part of the Wisconsin acoustic music scene for many years both as a performer and as co-owner of the legendary Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson\, where one can get legendary’s disease. Bill is a strong guitarist with a beautiful tenor voice and he is noted for intensely emotional performances of both his original songs and his interpretations of others such as Bob Dylan.

SUMMARY:JEFFREY FOUCAULT and KRIS DELMHORST- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:  This show has SOLD OUT.  Click on the Buy tickets link to Brown Paper Tickets and leave a note in the Discussion section at the bottom of the page to express your interest in obtaining or divesting yourself of tickets. \n  \n  \nLucky us and you. \nThese folk luminaries will brighten your January. \nHomegrown JEFFREY FOUCAULT grew up in Whitewater. A longtime disciple of the rich and strange music that sings behind the American veil\, Foucault has spent the last decade mining the darker seams of country and blues\, producing a string of spare and elemental albums of rare power while garnering accolades across the United States and overseas for a tersely elegant brand of songwriting set apart by its haunting imagery and weather-beaten cool. His latest record\, Salt as Wolves. \nHe lives in Western Massachusetts with \nKRIS DELMHORST \nwho has built a thriving career and a devoted following from the ground up\, and without major label hype. The same independence of spirit that led Delmhorst to spend some early years working on subsistence farms\, cooking on a schooner off the coast of Maine\, or hitch-hiking the back roads of Ireland with a fiddle on her back\, is evident in the arc of her musical evolution: a willingness to work on her own terms and her own time. Along the way she’s parlayed a decade of successful cross country and trans-Atlantic touring into one of the most distinct voices in American music.

SUMMARY:LAMPLIGHTER- PETER MULVEY/ HARMONIOUS WAIL/ JOSH HARTY/ DAVID GOODRICH- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:See here for Lamplighter enlightenment \n“PETER MULVEY is reaching for gold with his new record The Silver Ladder\, produced by Chuck Prophet. The eclectic range of Mulvey’s tireless past pays handsome dividends on this stylistically sweeping\, LA-recorded album. A crack specially convened band (including regular Dylan drummer David Kemper) adhere to his well-established live and direct recording approach and allow the performer’s deeply matured\, naturally wry and hard-edged Americana to attain full\, flowing life. From the raunchy melodic pop of “Sympathies” through suburban requiem “Remember the Milkman”\, the dizzying weirdness of “If You Shoot At A King” and even Led Zeppelin modal thunder on “Copenhagen Airport”\, Mulvey’s troubled visions attain striking clarity.” Gavin Martin\, Uncut \nDavis Enterprise:\n“The cream of the crop sings with a clarity reserved for the likes of legends.” \nBoston Globe:\n“Peter Mulvey is all substance\, which is his style.” \nSmoldering vocals laced among the jazzy mandolin and guitar; an infectious blend of continental jazz\, swing\, gypsy music and melodic vocals how DOES one describe the sound of HARMONIOUS WAIL? The Wail has caught numerous listeners by total surprise during its more than 20-year history. \nWhile DAVID GOODRICH “Goody” is known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, new-wave Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\, he continues to hone a sound all his own. Goody is a veteran touring and session musician\, producer\, composer\, and teacher living in Austin\, Texas. His music has been adapted for use in feature and documentary films\, museum exhibits\, and even video games. \nJOSH HARTY keeps alive the tradition of country\, blues and folk known collectively as Americana music. \n” … Singer-songwriter Josh Harty has everything to make it. A warm-sounding voice that refers to that of James Taylor or Gordon Lightfoot\, a guitar technique many artists can only dream of\, and narrative texts taken from life. . . The sincerity of the songs shines and the subtle and beautifully detailed instrumentation ensure that you always stay focused…” rootstime.be \n“The first thing that hits you is Harty’s world weary voice on Whiskey & Morphine as a song that talks of self-destruction and sets the tone for what is to come. . . Harty draws you into his songs and you are a part of his world.” -Stephen Rapid \n“I reckon this’ll be the third album for Wisconsin native Josh Harty. Coming from an intensely musical background\, he seems to have been playing and performing most of his 30-odd years and his fluency on the acoustic guitar is a testament to all those years of playing. As a songwriter\, I would say he’s striving to be as honest\, as true to an emotion\, as he can possibly get. . . there is a dignity to this music making that leaves us feeling enriched for the experience.” -John Davy No Depression

Whether touring as a duo (in this case) or with the full family band\, Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music. \nFor several years Russell and Nero’s respective bands\, Po’ Girl (Vancouver\, BC) and JT and the Clouds (Chicago\, IL)\, have collaborated extensively\, but on 2011’s Mountains/Forests\, released under the JT Nero banner\, they tapped into the true\, bewitching power of their voices together on an entire record. It also featured the full cast of characters that would round out the Birds of Chicago ensemble — the Clouds and Michelle McGrath\, the luminous singer and picker from the hidden hills of Southeast Ohio. \nNero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones\, is a fine thing. Not too perfect\, not at all saccharine\, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel\, street corner doo-wop\, and classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar\, it’s haunting. Fired by the band\, it’s a full tilt revival. \n“Everyone at Folk Alliance was talking about this band built around husband and wife Allison Russell and JT Nero. The acclaim was earned. Allison comes off  like  a demure young lady with a delightful Toronto accent when she speaks\, but when she sings\, she’s Aretha Franklin. They performed original music\, folk with a rock bend\, with a touch of gospel thrown in. By the end of the festival\, their shows were standing-room only\, if you could get into the room at all.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer – Mar. 2014) “The blend of the musicians’ voices is truly something to be celebrated at length. JT’s has been described as ‘fractured country-soul’ whereas Allison’s is just as soulful in its own bittersweet way; both have that slight touch of roughness too\, which makes it possible for them to draw on influences of anything from gospel to doo-wop and classic soul when singing.” (Folk and Roots; January\, 2013) \nWhile DAVID GOODRICH “Goody” is known to many as a producer and accompanist for the likes of roots legend Chris Smither\, Americana craftsmen Peter Mulvey and Jeffrey Foucault\, and folk sensation Redbird\, he continues to hone a sound all his own. Goody is a veteran touring and session musician\, producer\, composer\, and teacher living in Austin. DESCRIPTION:See here for Lamplighter enlightenment \n\n“PETER MULVEY is reaching for gold with his new record The Silver Ladder\, produced by Chuck Prophet.  ” \nThe eclectic range of Mulvey’s tireless past pays handsome dividends on this stylistically sweeping\, LA-recorded album. A crack specially convened band (including regular Dylan drummer David Kemper) adhere to his well-established live and direct recording approach and allow the performer’s deeply matured\, naturally wry and hard-edged Americana to attain full\, flowing life. From the raunchy melodic pop of “Sympathies” through suburban requiem “Remember the Milkman”\, the dizzying weirdness of “If You Shoot At A King” and even Led Zeppelin modal thunder on “Copenhagen Airport”\, Mulvey’s troubled visions attain striking clarity. – Gavin Martin\, Uncut \nDavis Enterprise:\n“The cream of the crop… sings with a clarity reserved for the likes of legends.” \nBoston Globe:\n“Peter Mulvey is all substance\, which is his style.” \nRaised among the ferns and the farmland of Northern Washington\, lyric-driven songwriter ANNA TIVEL loved words long before they became the backbone of her music. After moving to Oregon in 2007\, she slowly discovered the friendly music scene as a fiddle player\, and soon after picked up the guitar and began to write. Her latest album was released in June 2014 on Portland’s well-loved Fluff and Gravy Records. Anna is based in Portland\, OR and spends her time reading and writing and touring and fiddling and watching her dog try to catch flies by the window. \n“These are organic songs that freely reveal the poetry of the mind\, heart\, and soul\, the sharp imagery of the world translated into sound.” – No Depression \n“Anna’s strength is that of a lyricist. Her songs are filled with lines that intrigue and haunt.” – David Steinberg \nHailing from the song-rich soil of Minneapolis\, BRIANNA LANE  is the latest in a deluge of compelling songwriters flooding the region. Lane’s vocals are both confidant and fragile\, running parallels to Mindy Smith or Americana veteran Patty Griffin. Behind Lane’s beguiling smile lies a heart that has had its share of heartache where songs like “In My Bones” and “Company” draw their inspiration. Her stories oscillate between a sense of urgency and resolve while seeking a tranquil balance. \nCHRIS PORTERFIELD  says he is “midwestern to the core” and we find no fault with that kind of core. \n“The body remembers what the mind forgets\,” Chris Porterfield reminisces on his acclaimed band Field Report’s sophomore record\, Marigolden. The record is strewn with references to the inevitable tolls taken by the passage of time\, and prolonged distance from home and loved ones. \nThe past couple of years have flashed by for Porterfield\, who was thrust into the spotlight after years of musical reclusion. His Milwaukee-based band\, Field Report (an anagram of his surname)\, was culled together in the studio while recording their 2012 self-titled debut. They suddenly found themselves championed by their former idols: offered support tours by Counting Crows and Aimee Mann\, lauded by the likes of Mark Eitzel and Richard Thompson\, and covered by Blind Boys Of Alabama. \nThe band honed itself from a septet to a quartet in the year that followed\, focusing its sound and tightening the screws. With a heavy batch of songs under their arms\, they retreated to snowy Ontario in December 2013 to record their sophomore album\,Marigolden\, with the help of producer Robbie Lackritz (Feist). \nSpending two years roaming around the country playing tiny venues and sold-out amphitheaters alike\, Porterfield was uncertain whether he was leading the charge toward an artistic epiphany or headed down a misguided path of self-destruction. Marigolden reflects this\, as he ruminates across homesick tension and an un-grounded anxiety. But rather than wallow in melancholy\, Porterfield finds solace and inspiration through his songs\, which reveal themselves as uplifting and celebratory. The album is brighter than their 2012 debut\, but somehow remains just as elegantly ominous. \nMarigolden’s second track\, the surprisingly catchy radio single “Home\,” finds Porterfield on the road\, hoping the home\, wife\, dog\, and life he left behind in Milwaukee will still be there upon his return. “Leave the lights on\,” he asks\, “it might be nighttime when I get there\, but I’m on my way home.” While the song contemplates lonesomeness\, there is an undeniable sense of hope driving it. In “Summons\,” the penultimate track\, he recalls this thought\, repeating\, “I’ll be coming home to you” like a mantra. This sense of balance and symmetry across the album helps provide stability to the otherwise volatile themes. Case in point: the album starts with a sunrise in “Decision Day” and ends full circle with another in “Enchantment.” \nWhether reconsidering sobriety in “Pale Rider\,” sticking to tonic water in the bars of “Summons\,” or cashing in a 30-day chip for a kiss in “Enchantment\,” Porterfield’s relationship with alcohol runs through the current of nearly every song. Most notably in “Ambrosia\,” where he find himself face to face with the reality of where his drinking is destined to lead. \nThe album runs the musical gamut\, from the Traveling Wilburys-esque pop of “Home\,” to the Neil Young-inspired piano ballad “Ambrosia\,” to the electronic sonic landscape of “Wings.” While the compositions express a wide range in terms of genre\, they find unity in themselves within the limits of self-imposed minimalism. In the studio\, the songs were stripped down to the bones and built back up using only their essential elements.

A fan of Statz’s last album (2012’s Old Fashioned\, produced by Bo Ramsey)\, Foucault offered to produce his next record while the two were on tour together in Colorado. \nThe resulting Tulsa is beautiful blend of soft americana and smooth folk with echoes of The Jayhawks and Whiskeytown. “John writes songs you can’t shake\,” says Foucault. “They follow you around all day and run through your head at 3 a.m. Open hearted\, horizon-line songs.” \n“Jeff kicked my ass. He pushed me to crank out well-written songs\,” continues Statz. “He’s such a great songwriter himself and I felt like I had to step up my game. And then there is the absolutely amazing band…” The band John speaks of features Billy Conway (Morphine) on drums\, Mark Spencer (Son Volt) on electric guitars and pedal steel\, Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T) on bass\, Jeffrey Foucault on guitars and vocals\, Caitlin Canty singing harmonies and Matt Lorenz on fiddle. \n“Tulsa feels like how I was always supposed to make a record. Hunkered down for three days\, living and eating with the band\, tracking live\, all during the raging ‘Polar Vortex’.” \nBEN BEDFORD delivers intriguing sketches of America\, its individuals\, their victories and their struggles. Poignant\, but never sentimental\, Bedford’s portrait-like songs capture the vitality of his characters and draw the listener deep into the narratives. With three albums to his credit\, Bedford’s songs tackle scenarios including homelessness\, the plight of a Confederate soldier’s wife during the American Civil War\, the aerial triumphs of Amelia Earhart\, the life of Jack London\, the murder of Emmett Till in 1955\, John the Baptist\, the poet Vachel Lindsay and even the 1973 standoff between members of The American Indian Movement and federal agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Often drawing upon history\, Bedford’s songs have a strong sense of time and place. The songs are rich in sensory detail which allows the listener to hear\, see and feel each narrative. \nA true son of the heartland\, Bedford dips into the deep inkwell of classic American literature and writes with the ‘old soul’ quality of his literary idols\, such as John Steinbeck and Toni Morrison. All three of Bedford’s albums have charted highly on the Euro Americana charts and the Folk-DJ charts with What We Lost also charting highly on the Roots Music Report charts. IIn July of 2010\, Bedford was named one of the “50 most significant Folk singer-songwriters of the past 50 years” by Rich Warren of WFMT-Chicago. The list\, which included artists such as Bob Dylan\, Townes Van Zandt\, Judy Collins and John Prine subsequently appeared on the blog of journalist Eric Zorn on the Chicago Tribune website. \n“The Illinois songwriter is a masterful storyteller who can turn what seem like obscure historical references for engaging tales rife with vivid\, stark imagery.”\n–Erik Ernst\, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel \nLyric-driven songwriter ANNA TIVEL has loved words long before they became the backbone of her music. His music draws from a range of influences\, both musical and not. More than anything\, the style and storytelling are especially informed by the hills of southwestern Wisconsin that were his early home\, and by the people he’s met there and in travels around the country. An avid writer and reader\, Balto’s songs focus on narration: workers and lovers\, mothers and sons\, the dying and mourning\, the prideful and the abused.
