SUMMARY:HAYWARD WILLIAMS/ Mike Kuntz
DESCRIPTION:Hayward grew up with a guitar in his hands\, performing from an early age in cafés\, bars\, and eventually rock clubs throughout his home state of Wisconsin and around the Midwest. A high school ‘Battle of the Bands’ champion\, the textbook lonely college kid making dinner dates with his guitar\, Williams took the well-worn suburban route to musical accomplishment: he hit the ground running with a ’64 Gibson that his mother bought at a garage sale\, listened hard to everything from the Beatles to Buckley\, and somewhere along the way began to write the tunes that would become his own voice. \nRhythms Magazine. (Australia)\n“Looking at the bespectacled youth peering out from the album bio\, you would never expect the smoky authoritative voice that swells from Cotton Bell. But maybe Williams’ appearance belies his age\, this being the Milwaukee singer-songwriter’s third full length album. Williams’ is the voice of maturity and restraint\, and by voice I mean not only his deep\, resonant singing\, but his approach\, attitude\, songwriting – the whole deal. Full of gentle\, tender songs beautifully recorded\, Cotton Bell presents nothing groundbreaking or startling. But the deeper you listen\, the further you appreciate those sounds and songs. Dan McMahon’s guitar and pedal steel and dobro are consistently grace full and as a co-producer\, he’s clearly a crucial ingredient to the impact of Cotton Bell. Strings and harmonies flesh out the songs beautifully throughout – Third track in ‘Mockingbird’ is a great example\,just gorgeous to listen to\, a breathtaking guitar solo\, strings and harmonies swelling and subsiding\, and Williams’ vocal melody glowing throughout.”\nMike Kuntz opens.\nReservations and prompt arrivals urged.  Hayward’s shows have been known to sell out.

SUMMARY:ED HALL/ JIM OHLSCHMIDT
DESCRIPTION:Ed Hall is an instrumental fingerstyle guitarist and banjo player. His performances are lively and humorous as well as instrumentally astounding. Ed’s approach to fingerstyle guitar has always been to try to arrange pieces for guitar that are not typically played on one guitar\, difficult pieces\, arranged as accurately as possible by ear. Instrumentals like The William Tell Overture\, Hoedown from Rodeo by Copland\, The Hungarian Rhapsody II by Liszt\, and The Theme From Peter Gunn are now part of the classic arrangements in his repertoire.  Ed’s early guitar influences were the Beatles\, John Denver\, Doc Watson\, Chet Atkins\, Stefan Grossman\, and Ed’s guitar hero Gamble Rogers.  The pinnacle so far in Ed’s career came in September 1991 when he won the coveted National Fingerpicking Championships at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield\, Kansas. Ed’s banjo style covers bluegrass and folk standards for the 5 string. \n“Lost Jim” Ohlschmidt is one of today’s foremost performers of Mississippi John Hurt’s music. In a newly published biography of Hurt\, Stefan Grossman commented “Jim really captures the feel\, sound and atmosphere of John’s music. The guitar playing is spot-on and the vocals are great – very warm and evocative.” Jim has recorded three CDs of John Hurt’s music to date\, and has also produced various solo recordings of original acoustic fingerstyle instrumentals and songs. Currently living in Eden Prairie\, Jim performs in the Twin Cities with his trio\, Lost Jim & the Boxcar Scholars. He also is lead guitarist and singer with a Madison-based electric blues band called the Velveetatones. Jim wrote and produced several musical segments for The Rhythm of the River\, a film produced by Dave Erickson documenting efforts to preserve the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway which was recently aired on Wisconsin Public Television.

SUMMARY:TOM WASELCHUK & JAMI LAMPKINS
DESCRIPTION:Tom Waselchuk & Jami Lampkins are the front singers and song-writers for The Dang-Its\, their Madison-based quintet performing “Honky Tonk\, Western Swing & Americana.” Their duet show is an unplugged performance of material drawn from the band’s repertoire\, leaning on their original songs and including some favorite covers collected over many years in the biz. \nJami Lampkins hails from Las Vegas NV\, where she learned the ropes of the music business playing with her family bluegrass band. The Lampkins Family Band toured regionally and shared the stage with major country and bluegrass acts. Jami is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, and bass) as well as a seasoned singer with a clear\, powerful voice. While testing the career waters in Nashville Jami was a finalist in USA Network’s “Nashville Star” competition\, a process that taught her that particular career path came with too high a price. (Editor’s note: This is not a case of sour grapes. Spend 5 minutes with Jami and you’ll know she harbors not a shred of the cut-throat drive needed to fight one’s way through the Nashville shark tank.) While in Nashville she lent her talents to several bands and found a mentor in the great country artist Gail Davies. With Ms. Davies’ help\, Jami was able to realize a life long ambition to perform on the Grand Ole Opry Stage. \nTom Waselchuk has been a professional musician in Madison for three decades playing an amazingly diverse number of music styles: Bluegrass (Stone Oak Bluegrass Band)\, Mainstream jazz (Full Count Jazz Band)\, Irish and World (Katzenjammers\, Rubato Brothers)\, and Rock & Roll (Marcy & the Highlights) Tom recently completed a ten year association playing Gypsy swing music with the national and international touring quartet\, Harmonious Wail. As a side man and multi-instrumentalist (guitar\, pedal steel guitar\, bass) Tom has worked with many of Madison’s top players and bands: Cris Plata\, Jackie Allen\, Doug Brown\, Chris Wagoner and Mary Gaines to name a few. \nTom founded The Dang-Its in 1998. They are perennial honorees in Madison’s Isthmus Reader’s Choice Polls and Madison Magazine’s “Favorites.” The group has three independent CD releases: Don’t Mean Maybe (2000)\, Our Way (2006)\, and Daddy’s Cadillac (2010)\, and is working on its 4th recording. \n

SUMMARY:TOM FREUND/ JESS KLEIN
DESCRIPTION:Jess Klein   Tom Freund \nIt’s always a recipe for something special when two acclaimed songwriters share the road together. Having met for the first time in the Lower East Side of NYC nearly a decade ago\, the two soulful\, genre-bending troubadours have been eager to tour together since.  Klein explains\, “His music is comforting and inspiring to me… we both still play because music feeds our souls.  There’s a musical yin-yang and a personal kinship between Tom and I\, and those two things combined make for the best kinds of shows.” \nA troubadour whose talents have been lauded on the national and international scene for almost a decade\, Jess Klein writes songs that tell the story of the soul – from wrenching heartbreak to finding the strength to pick up and move on.  Weaving her own inimitable blend of folk\, soul and rock ‘n roll\, Klein’s music features spot-on\, speak-to-the-heart lyrics\, percussive guitar and a voice as sweet as it is strong. \nThe Rochester\, New York native picked up the acoustic guitar and started writing songs while living as a student abroad in Kingston\, Jamaica in her late teens. She returned to the US\, moved to Boston and released two albums on indie-giant Rykodisc:  2000’s Draw Them Near\,  [3.5 stars\, USA Today]\, launched Klein on a worldwide tour where her relaxed confidence and rootsy soulfulness wowed 70\,000 attendees at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.  Klein’s 2005 follow-up\, Strawberry Lover\, was given four stars by MOJO\, and the emotive and sensual title track was named one of the “Top Ten Sexiest Songs of the Moment” by the NY Daily News.  In 2006\, Klein released the blues and Motown influenced City Garden which was given an impressive five stars by MOJO Magazine and described by Roots Music UK as having “The best roots sound of any album heard this year.” \nKlein moved to her current home\, Austin\, TX in 2008\, inspiring her 2009 release\, Bound To Love.  Shining as Klein’s most confident work to date\, Bound to Love evoked the dusty roots of Texas songwriters and made her a household name in the Austin music world.  Bound to Love again took Klein across the globe\, including a tour of Ireland supporting folk legend Arlo Guthrie. \nHer newest album\, A Room of Your Own\, reflects a maturity and seize the day attitude influenced by her father’s inspiring battle with the disease ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease) which took his life in early 2011.  A Room of Your Own will be Jess’s first independent album in 14 years and will be released in April 2012. \nIt’s in the seemingly effortless ease with which he delivers his conversational lyrics and mellifluous melodies\, this natural magic that is at the heart of Tom Freund’s music. Though he’s well-schooled and widely-traveled in a variety of genres — from hearftelt folk to buoyant pop to boho jazz to straightforward rock ‘n’ roll\, and beyond — Freund ultimately comes across simply as a singer-songwriter with his own singularly distinctive and engaging voice. \nHis newest album\, The Edge of Venice is produced by John Alagia (John Mayer\, Jason Mraz\, Dave Matthews) and features of some of LA’s finest musicians joining him. The album comes in the wake of his latest EP “Fit To Screen” whose songs have been featured in this seasons “Parenthood” on NBC; and his latest full length “Collapsible Plans” which was produced by his musical cohort Ben Harper and hosted Jackson Browne as a special guest. The song “Collapsible Plans (Sugar) was seen performed live on “Last Call With Carson Daly” in January of 09: “I’ve always been a fan of Tom’s work\, and I thought that I had something to bring to Tom sonically that was maybe a place he hadn’t stepped into yet\,” Harper says. \nA sought-out standup bassist\, the talented\, versatile Freund plays most of the stringed instruments as well as piano on his albums. \nTom writes all his own material and his songs continue to be featured on such prime time TV shows as “Las Vegas” and “One Tree Hill” as well as such films as “Charlie Bartlett\,” and “12 Bucks.” Steven Spielberg’s SHOAH Foundation also used three of Tom’s compositions for their Giving Voice video. He also won a Telly Award for the music behind a National Public Service Announcement concerning child abuse. \n“Every year the mounting landfill of new releases that threatens to bury the working music journalists yields a few unexpected gems\, and Tom Freund is one of them.”\n– THE NEW YORK TIMES \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:KAREN SAVOCA & PETE HEITZMAN
DESCRIPTION:Acoustic soul music by Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman. \n“If she were a Native American\, her name would be Sings Like Two Birds.” -Greg Brown \nBorn in northern NJ\, the daughter of a big band singer\, Karen Savoca’s baby diary reads “20 months\, knows 6 songs.” She grew up singing\, dancing and harmonizing around a piano\, and by the age of five she was emceeing the school play. \nSavoca puts her heart into a song the way a great actor throws herself into a role\, charming audiences with a supple alto and a boundless range of expression. A gifted songwriter\, she draws you into her world of humor and compassion\, telling stories with grace and ease\, as though you’ve been invited to her table for supper. \nShe first met Pete Heitzman at a jam session and immediately recognized him as an ideal musical partner. Described by an Alaskan reviewer as “the aurora borealis of guitar\,” Heitzman’s transcendent playing is central to their sound. With a broad pallet of tones and textures\, he paints ideal landscapes for Savoca’s engaging songs. Years of leading an all-original\, dance-driven band imbued the duo with the power of a larger group. \n“Electrifying\, unique and always uplifting\, these improvisational performers have the fearlessness of a high wire act working without a net.” –Six String\, Columbus\, OH \nSavoca’s seventh solo release\, Promise\, was recorded in their 19th century church studio nestled deep in the hills of upstate NY. Promise is being lauded as her strongest collection of songs to date\, hitting #1 on Alberta’s CKUA chart and #25 on the Euro/Americana Chart. \n“There’s soul in the delicious grooves and phrasing\, and soul in the broader spiritual sense that floats out in her lyrical vision.”  –Edmonton Journal \n“Cleverly written and embracingly beautiful songs that have a beguiling way of changing and reconfiguring themselves like an aural kaleidoscope.” –Duluth News Tribune \n“Sparkling arrangements… joyous abandon .” –Dirty Linen \nWinners of seven SAMMY Awards. Notable appearances include The Today Show\, A Prairie Home Companion\, Mountain Stage\, Big Top Chautauqua\, The Vancouver\, Edmonton & Winnipeg Folk Festivals. They are also independent record producers who have scored several feature films and documentaries.

DESCRIPTION:What began as a casual musical get-together grew into a partnership of like musical minds: Susan Shore and Michael Cockram merged their solo careers when they met in early 2010. Both are versatile multi-instrumentalists\, songwriters and singers. Shore and Cockram have an appetite for striking and unusual songs\, and they’ve built an eclectic repertoire that ranges from high lonesome traditional ballads to swing and contemporary folk songs. \nMichael Cockram is an Arkansas native who became a banjo player in his teens; a quick study and a virtuoso player\, he promptly added fiddle\, guitar and mandolin to his stable of instruments. Michael’s checkerboard life as architect\, professor\, freelance writer and artist led him around the world\, music remaining a constant companion. He returned to Arkansas in 2008 and now calls Fayetteville home. \nSusan Shore is an east coast transplant whose childhood home was filled with music. Raised by a big-band musician dad and an adventure-loving mother\, Susan was encouraged to play music\, and became a professional musician in the 1980’s (as half of Bell & Shore). Based in Iowa and touring widely\, the duo recorded two acclaimed albums. She relocated to Fayetteville in 1999. The title song of Michael’s CD “House of Stone” earned him first place in the Willamette Valley Folk Festival new song contest. Susan’s two albums with Bell and Shore met with critical acclaim\, including a 3 ½ star review in Rolling Stone; her two solo albums were also enthusiastically received\, “Book of Days” cited as one of the best folk/bluegrass albums of the year by Option Magazine.

SUMMARY:DON HAYNIE & SHERYL SAMUEL
DESCRIPTION:Since the release of their first independent album\, Life in the Circus\, Don & Sheryl have been taking their music far & wide across America\, playing concerts in an amazing range of venues. Their instrumentation– Sheryl’s use of percussion interwoven with Don’s six- and twelve-string guitars– gives their music a rhythmic drive rarely found in contemporary acoustic music: sometimes working as a compelling rhythm section supporting the vocal melodies and harmonies\, sometimes lending a delicate accent\, and often touching their music with a world beat flavor\, through the use of percussion instruments from many cultures. \nDon and Sheryl have learned to combine upbeat\, sometimes drivingly energetic songs with wistful\, thoughtful ballads\, for performances with grit as well as grace. Don’s songs can make you laugh\, cry\, or dance. As innovative and refreshing as this duo’s instrumentation is\, it is there mostly to support the real heart of their music\, the songs themselves\, and Don and Sheryl’s unique\, powerful vocal harmonies. \n“Pristine guitar playing . . . Seamless harmony . . . A sure instinct for lovely melodies\, a brilliant sense of narrative and storytelling\, and at times a wry wit . . . A treasure trove of potential hits.”   The Woodstock Times

SUMMARY:DAYNA KURTZ/ BILL CAMPLIN
DESCRIPTION:These two evenings will feature Ms. Kurtz and her trance-inducing\, contralto tones.  Her depth is akin to the Nina Simone not only as a vocalist but as an interpreter and writer.  A real equal opportunity purveyor of human musical expression\, she defies categorization while giving a big-boned\, highly emotive concentration to all she interprets or originates.  “I’m not of the jazz\, blues\, folk\, R&B\, rock\, or pop worlds enough to belong to any of them\, but all of those things are in there\,” she says. \nKurtz began performing as a teenager\, and has had a solo touring career ever since. She opened for Richie Havens\, who became a fan and lent vocals to her debut studio album\, Postcards from Downtown. Dayna keeps winning over new fans in the music scene.  In the past two years she has been invited to open up for Rufus Wainwright\, Antony & the Johnsons\, and Keren Ann.  Additionally\, she has an admirer in fellow “Living Room” habitué Norah Jones\, who sings a duet with her on “I Got It Bad…” (From Beautiful Yesterday).  The legendary Richard Thompson invited her to open up for a coast-to-coast nationwide tour that found Dayna converting some of his faithful fans. \nAnd she’s not just a riveting singer. Her guitar playing is flexible enough to take her to the musical places she visits\, whether she’s plucking an open pattern with an oddly cabaret feel or strumming some attitude into the bluesy realm.  Her newest release “Another Black Feather” finds Dayna leaning more heavily on her roots and country influences than usual\, in particular making generous use of her new lap steel guitar\, and showcasing her prodigious slide work on other songs. \n“One of the things that I seem to encounter constantly is that I don’t really quite fit anywhere\,” observes Dayna Kurtz.  This observation is also accurate to the person assembling this descriptive\, Bill Camplin.  And as a feeling of “soul mate” has always been there whenever Dayna is at the Carpe\, this aging drama queen singer wants to enjoy the evening with her as a performer and listener.  A rare treat in an October life.  Rest assured that Dayna will be featured.  It is just the hope that an audience for either of these two might find the synergy that is expected to make for a fine and rewarding night of listening. \n“Every step I’ve taken has felt really organic\, and like they’ve been made at the right time\,” she states\, adding\, “The records I’ve made feel like honest expressions of where I’m at musically\, and the making of them has been joyful and interesting.”  —  Dayna Kurtz \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:“HAUNTING AND POIGNANT TRIUMPH FROM AMERICAN SINGER Jeffrey Foucault is an original\, beguiling songwriter with a marvelously expressive voice. He brings these talents together\, along with fine guitar playing\, to create a terrific album… John Updike once wrote of a character who was like an open window through which the rain poured. Foucault’s album captures that poignancy”. \nLongtime disciple of the rich and strange \nmusic that sings behind the American veil\, Jeffrey Foucault has spent the last decade mining the darker seams of country and blues\, producing a string of spare and elemental albums of rare power while garnering accolades across the United States and overseas (check the website\, he has an accolade record as long as an orangutan’s arm) for a tersely elegant brand of songwriting set apart by its haunting imagery and weather-beaten cool. \nHe lives in Western Massachusetts\, but he spent his earlier decades honing his life in southeastern Wisconsin. \n\nHayward Williams\, another proud Wisconsonian- \n“Given the plethora of American singer-songwriters\, to stand out they have to be something special. Wisconsin native Hayward Williams fits the bill to judge by this sparse\, concentrated slice of thoughtful\, folky Americana. Recorded “on the crest of the coldest winter in recent memory”\, the music has a huddled-down\, blanketed warmth in which you can almost hear the sparks of the fire as Dan McMahon’s electric guitar picks out notes against an acoustic guitar backdrop in the evocative title track and Mockingbird. There are splashes of violin\, viola\, mandolin and pedal steel\, and hushed\, tuneful voices to flesh out Williams’s rich\, resigned tone. The eight songs (plus an unnamed extra)\, with themes of recollection and reflection wrapped in simple\, timeless melodies\, are most impressive.”  Irish Times

SUMMARY:PAMELA MEANS/ BILL CAMPLIN
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Means\, “one of the fiercest guitar players and politically-rooted singer-songwriters in the music industry today\,” (Curve Magazine) is touring the world with her “mad guitar-and-vocal skills” (Time Out New York)\, “insanely brilliant” (Press Herald\, Portland ME) tunes\, and refreshing take on jazz standards. \nPamela Means’s new acoustic album\, “Precedent\,” is an acclaimed follow-up to both “Pamela Means Jazz Project M Vol. 1” (Top 10 Album of 2007 – Muruch.com)\, in which\, “Means takes her rightful place among contemporary\njazz vocalists such as Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones” (Curve Magazine); and the preceding politically-provocative Pamela Means release\, “Single Bullet Theory\,” named 2004 Outmusic Outstanding New Recording of the Year. \nPamela will be sharing the evening with less fierce but very capable Bill Camplin\, whom some of you know as “Bill”. \nCheck out Bill on Facebook as the Bill Camplin Band\, or look for performances on YouTube.

SUMMARY:CARMEL MIKOL
DESCRIPTION:Carmel comes to celebrate the release of her new album “Creature”. \nA triple nominee at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards\, Carmel has always been a songwriter. From her childhood on a family farm in rural Cape Breton Island\, Nova Scotia\, to her current “home” on the road\, Carmel has built her life around crafting songs\, collecting stories\, and carving poetry out of the human experience. After a year of touring extensively across Canada and the US with her celebrated debut album “In My Bones”\, Carmel recently returned home to Cape Breton to create her newest recording “Creature”. \nAn Americana-tinged confluence of acoustic and electric guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, and unaffected vocals\, “Creature” was recorded live off the floor with her band at Cape Breton’s award winning Lakewind Sound Studio (Gordie Sampson/Fred Lavery). From the overtly political Twenty Something Girl to the deeply personal I Miss The Moon\, “Creature” is a fresh take on traditional folk song fodder: wayward politics\, social change\, and poignant\, fictional “true” stories. “I’m not sure which takes more courage for me – singing honestly about my losses or taking on newspaper headlines\,” Carmel admits. Either way\, the album reveals her as a truly unique voice in the Canadian songwriter landscape. \nCarmel’s songwriting has garnered her international attention\, winning the folk category in the 2010 Great American Song Contest and International Singer Songwriter Awards Song Contest. \n“Mikol’s sure way with a melody\, straddling country and folk traditions\, is warm and organic… It announces her as a hardcore troubadour and a softcore cynic\, winning either way.”\nCarsten Knox\, The Coast \n
