The Briar Pickers are a violin/mandolin duet consisting of mandolinist Brian Ray and fiddler Paul Kienitz, melding traditional Appalachian folk melodies with classical chamber music sensibilities.

This conversational paradigm is the thread woven through the coupling of old-time ‘rustic’ properties with the intrinsic chamber music approach; being that of constructed or made in a plain and simple fashion and a small number of performers, with one performer to a part. Resulting is their self-dubbed “rustic chamber music”…a collage of sounds evoking imagery and emotions that take the players and audience on a journey together to different times and places.

The duet is enchanced to a quartet with the addition of special guest Starr Moss (guitar) who has recently wrapped up a three year tenure with Chicago’s Henhouse Prowlers and the superlative Jon Peik on bass and banjo.
